Page Quality
Hi Ingenuity!
How are the "Page Quality" numbers calculated on the "Ingenuity/Articles_needing_improvement" page? Are they automatically updated? I appreciate your help and thanks for all your contributions to Wikipedia! GaelicSiren (talk) 02:47, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hey @GaelicSiren! The page quality is calculated using three factors: page length, number of references, and average reference size. It isn't automatically updated, unfortunately - I have to download and process the data every time I want to update it, which can take hours. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 01:33, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – November 2023
News and updates for administrators from the past month (October 2023).
Interface administrator changes
- The WMF is working on making it possible for administrators to edit MediaWiki configuration directly. This is similar to previous work on Special:EditGrowthConfig. A technical RfC is running until November 08, where you can provide feedback.
- There is a proposed plan for re-enabling the Graph Extension. Feedback on this proposal is requested.
- Eligible editors are invited to self-nominate themselves from 12 November 2023 until 21 November 2023 to stand in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections.
- Xaosflux, RoySmith and Cyberpower678 have been appointed to the Electoral Commission for the 2023 Arbitration Committee Elections. BusterD is the reserve commissioner.
- Following a motion, the contentious topic designation of Prem Rawat has been struck. Actions previously taken using this contentious topic designation are still in force.
- Following several motions, multiple topic areas are no longer designated as a contentious topic. These contentious topic designations were from the Editor conduct in e-cigs articles, Liancourt Rocks, Longevity, Medicine, September 11 conspiracy theories, and Shakespeare authorship question cases.
- Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
- Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
- An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.
- The Articles for Creation backlog drive is happening in November 2023, with 700+ drafts pending reviews for in the last 4 months or so. In addition to the AfC participants, all administrators and New Page Patrollers can conduct reviews using the helper script, Yet Another AFC Helper Script, which can be enabled in the Gadgets settings. AfC backlog bot
Two questions for you: is this bot set to run at specific times, and if so, when? Also, if we reply to each other's re-reviews, does this screw up the bot in any way or is that fine? If someone wants to retract a re-review, should they remove it entirely or will striking it out work? -- asilvering (talk) 19:20, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hey @Asilvering. Right now the bot just runs when I run the script - every couple hours when I'm awake. I'll set up a cronjob soon to run it automatically. I don't think replying to another person's re-review will affect the bot. To retract a re-review, you can just unbold the pass/fail/invalid. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 15:54, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- Great, thanks! -- asilvering (talk) 18:12, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- By the way, would it be possible to get the bot to count "invalid" re-reviews alongside the failed ones in the leaderboard table? Personally I'm a bit more concerned about those ones than the fails, since anyone can be wrong sometimes but the invalid declines are always a concern. -- asilvering (talk) 16:38, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- I've done that now, along with passed re-reviews. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 21:58, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Unblock Request
I recently made updates to Lancaster Bible College's Wikipedia page and I was told I need to do an employee disclosure. I did so, and when I tried making the published changes, I got partially blocked. All this information is accurate and citations are provided for. 67longfellow (talk) 22:16, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
- As a paid editor, you should not be edit warring to restore promotional content to an article you have a conflict of interest with. Instead, you should submit an edit request on the article's talk page, stating the changes you want made and your explanation, and an uninvolved editor will review your changes. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 12:51, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

Wayback Machine
I've just noticed an edit of yours from earlier this year, where you have added archive links to every single reference on an article, even though none of them are dead.
I've just had a look through your talk archives, and I'm surprised to see that no-one seems to have mentioned it yet but, archive links from places the Wayback Machine and Archive Today, should only be added to references when the original reference is dead. Danstarr69 (talk) 02:01, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hey @Danstarr69. I'm not aware of any policies against archiving live links - it's a common practice to add archive URLs even if the websites aren't dead. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 13:07, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ingenuity it's not common practice, as it makes it look as though they're dead when they have an archive link added. I was told this years ago.
- Most people will automatically click the archive link, and decide to replace it possibly with an inferior reference, or delete it altogether, if the archive link hasn't saved properly, and haven't checked to see if the original link is still working.
- I save every link I add to IMDB and Wikipedia on the Wayback Machine and Archive Today, and even most of the links I correct, just in case they go dead in the future, but I don't add the archive links to IMDB and Wikipedia unless the original has gone dead.
- It's very likely certain websites/web pages will go dead in future, as some of them change every few years, like one link (a mainstream website dedicated to filmographies) I added to IMDB last night which I noticed has changed its URL for a third time at least in less than ten years.
- However most of the ones you added archive links to, were from some local newspapers by a company which owns 100s across the UK, which I've noticed have changed their website layout a couple of times (most recently sometime this year), but haven't changed their URL's for around 10-15 years. Danstarr69 (talk) 16:21, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Danstarr69, this is definitely not correct. A lot of the time when I use IAbot to add these archive links, it is creating the archive as it does so. Adding the archive links is actually protecting these pages from becoming truly dead (ie, dead links with no archive anywhere). It's extremely helpful both for wikipedia and for IA. -- asilvering (talk) 18:46, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
re-review counts in AfC backlog bot
Hi there, can you take another look at how your bot is counting completed re-reviews? The count seems very low for some users (has Vanderwaalforces really only done one re-review?), and for others it's showing 0 when that's definitely incorrect. (Me, for example, but at a quick glance down the list I can say I know for sure that Significa liberdade has done at least one, and I feel pretty sure that several others are in the same boat even if I can't immediately find a re-review they've done.) -- asilvering (talk) 18:50, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thought I fixed it, but apparently you're now at -202 re-reviews and Significa liberdade has gained 2000 points. Turns out I'm just really bad at writing code. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 19:04, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Finally fixed it. Hopefully. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 19:17, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- "really bad at writing code"[citation needed] -- asilvering (talk) 19:39, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- I've seen Vanderwaalforces do about 10 to 15 I think. Also, asilvering has done quite of bit of re-reviews so a lot more than 0. I think a few of mine are missing as well. I think I have a bit over 200. No issue though, just noting. Thank you for your bot work! ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:16, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- "a bit" over 200 lmfao, try nearly double -- asilvering (talk) 19:38, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- I actually didn't remember having that many but I'll take the bot's word for it, lol. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:40, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

AFC Review Backlog Drive
Hi Ingenuity.
I am not able to figure out why IngenuityBot is not counting some of my reviews. There is a substantial difference between my AFC log and bot count. Your help in this regard will be appreciated. Maliner (talk) 19:02, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Ingenuity. Have you fixed the issue? Maliner (talk) 16:14, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hey @Maliner, sorry for not responding sooner. It looks like you have a lot of deleted drafts in your log, and the bot can't see deleted reviews. You are welcome to add any missing reviews to your backlog log manually, though - you just have to add "# Accepted Page Name", for example, and the bot will add that to your score. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 17:20, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Life is not fair
Hey, Ingenuity, I'm kind of disappointed that you blocked Edelweiss109 so that I didn't get to. After I reverted this edit of theirs today, I checked out their contribs, which all seemed to have a certain common denominator, and regretted that they'd so far been too cautious to be blocked. And as soon as I took my eye off the ball, they threw caution to the wind and created that userbox, and you blocked them. Not fair! I'll send User:Bishzilla after you! (And congratulations, also.) The revy devy truck
A humble hello to you! :-) I noticed that you redacted the revisions listed here. The edit summaries of course are eligible for the revy devy - there's no question about that. However, the revisions themselves are not. Because of this, I've restored the revision changes to be public. As you likely know, I hold and have nothing against you of course; I audit admin actions regularly and I make sure all of them are with compliance of policy. If you object to the changes I undid, please let me know as soon as possible. I'm happy to talk about it and work with you. Thanks Ingenuity, it's been awhile since we've talked and I hope you're doing well! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:32, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hey @Oshwah! Thanks for undeleting those - I must have accidentally selected the "delete revision text" when mass-revdeling. I'm so used to this particular LTA posting things like this that it's habit to check that button now. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 22:19, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2023
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2023).
- Following a talk page discussion, the Administrators' accountability policy has been updated to note that while it is considered best practice for administrators to have notifications (pings) enabled, this is not mandatory. Administrators who do not use notifications are now strongly encouraged to indicate this on their user page.
- Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
- The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

Filter 614
Hi Ingenuity, I've seen Filter 614 (hist · log) disallow good edits that add links to Slayyyter or Slayyyter (mixtape) a few times now after your change on 3 January. Are those links the intended target? Nobody (talk) 06:35, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- I've added a space in that filter condition so it shouldn't match those links anymore - thanks for the report. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 12:05, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

An.. Interesting Award
To you, Ingenuity, I bestow upon you a strange and probably unique award. One many can attempt just by being diligent, but which requires stupendous luck. Some would not consider this an award, but I choose to give you this award because of the sheer absurdity of the situation.
Above the Law of the Land (ALL) Award*
On February 6th, 2024, you blocked anonymous users from a certain IP address for a week due to block evasion. Said IP address just so happened to belong to the Department of Justice. Someone somewhere used that IP to not only declare that you were a "power-tripping weenie", but also compared Wikipedia to the "Freisler's People's Court". This coming from someone most likely belonging to someone from the United States Department of Justice.
So congratulations, a member of the Department of Justice called you a "power-tripping weenie" for protecting Wikipedia. Some would consider it an insult, but if I were you, I'd personally wear it like a badge of honor.
*Probably not a good name. Can't exactly come up with a good one. I'm willing to let you come up with a better one. LegitSi 05:55, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
