Images for Banner and Userbox
I have one really hard question to deal with here. What images do all the members want to see on the userbox and the banner? I can't find any maps that are really visually striking, and I'm not sure whether we would want a photo of an island, or something like that, on the banner and box. So, I'm throwing the question out to the rest of you. Which images would you like to see on the banner and userbox(es)? Badbilltucker 22:18, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
- I have no idea :( Guettarda 23:40, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
- The ones you picked are fine with me. Guettarda 17:37, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- The best image would be something that is inclusive of all countries in the region and immediatly recognizable as "Caribbean". I don't know of any maps of the entire region that would still be recognizable at icon size, so I say stick with the generic beach scenes unless someone comes up with something better. - Jwillbur 04:54, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- Of course, while all of the images below say "Caribbean" they aren't uniquely Caribbean. Guettarda 20:35, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Bermuda
Right now, Bermuda does not fall within the scope of any local or regional projects. Would the members of this project think it an acceptable idea to add Bermuda to this project? Badbilltucker 18:43, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- I think it should, Bill. Though I believe it is not officially in the Caribbean, where else is it likely to fit in. --Zleitzen 19:32, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- Sure - it's up to us to define the scope as we see useful (this isn't an article-space project, so we aren't constrained by WP:V or anything like that). Guettarda 20:30, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- Aye, indeed. The more, the merrier. —Nightstallion (?) 22:46, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos are not geographicly in the Caribbean either, but they, like Bermuda, are ussually considered as within the same economic region as the antillies. I would suggest its inclusion. Russeasby 13:12, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Open tasks
I added an open tasks section to the project page. Feel free to add any tasks or requested articles there. Jwillbur 04:50, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Scope should be expanded..
the scope of the project should be expanded to include, Belize, Guyana and Surinam. Those three counties while not geographically a part of the Caribbean, are culturally and politically considered a part of the caribbean. they are all a part of the caribbean equavelent of the EU; CSME. it is possible that in 20 years the entire CSME will be one country.
- I have no objections to expanding the scope of the project to include those countries. Particularly as only one (Belize) is currently even being considered for inclusion in another project. On that basis, I am expanding the scope of the project to include them as per the above. If there are any objections, please feel free to voice them below. Badbilltucker 14:25, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed. What about the Florida Keys, Isla Margarita and San Andres and Providencia? Guettarda 14:36, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- It should also include the caribbean areas of the continental countries such as Mexico, Colombia (Caribbean Region), Venezuela, etc.--((F3rn4nd0 ))(BLA BLA BLA) 17:43, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think the Florida Keys, Isla Margarita (which is in Venezuela) and the continental Latin American regions fit the bill. This is a large project and to cover these areas, which should be well covered in other portals and projects related to the USA and Latin America, would add unneccessary work.--Zleitzen 19:04, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- Anything which lies in the Category:Caribbean (which seems to include many coastal areas) or its subcategories can be seen as being legitimately within the scope of this project. However, I don't suggest that any existing articles related to areas like the Florida Keys be added to one of those categories simply to fall under the scope of this project. Certainly, many of those areas would generally fall within the scope of other projects as well. Badbilltucker 19:50, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- I don't see the problem. It's probably better for an article to be within the scope of two or more wikiprojects... meaning more people helping to develop the article. Belize above is within the scope of the caribbean wikiproject it can also be under a Central America wikiproject... --((F3rn4nd0 ))(BLA BLA BLA) 15:48, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
Considering AfD for Aruba D. A.
Hello. I found Aruban Democratic Alliance while looking through the list of orphaned articles, i.e. those without incoming links. There are less than 200 nonwiki Google hits about the party, which casts doubt on its notability. The article itself says it basically lost the election. Montserrat article
This article should be made into a disambiguation page, due to the fact there is another Montserrat, in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, here.
Would anyone support/oppose this proposal?? --sunstar nettalk 11:11, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- Is there an article on Montserrat in Manchester? If not, then there is no need to disambiguate. If so, a line at the top of the article on the island indicating other uses would suffice.-- Zleitzen (Talk) 12:55, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

I tried to link to my own site which in the eyes of some I guess makes me a spammer, and the link was anyway removed. The site has lots of images from Haiti, recent, and of a decent quality, and some info as well. I find the link could be useful to people as it can be hard to find good visual impressions of the country. Would it be a problem if I try to link to it again?

Project scope
A quick question on project scope - should we include people who are of Caribbean descent but have never lived in the Caribbean, such as the people in Category:People of Puerto Rican descent? Jwillbur 00:47, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hello Jwillbur, although that sounds like a decent move, I actually feel the work involved would be too much. There are simply 100s of biographies out there that would meet that criteria, and there are perhaps numerous time sapping ambiguities involved (is someone whose mother is Jamaican and father Welsh included etc?) The scope of this project is already vast, for instance; there are 1300 articles on Cuban subjects alone.-- Zleitzen(talk) 00:54, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, but I figured I'd see what everyone else thought about it. Some such articles have already been tagged, if no one objects, then we should go through all the "People of X descent" categories and untag them. Jwillbur 01:41, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- Basically the point of tagging is saying "we see this as being within the scope of this project", not "we can justify describing them as being of the Caribbean". If the coverage is uneven, so be it.
- It's a judgement call. I don't see any advantage in a hard and fast rule. But I see no reason to un-tag. Guettarda 03:26, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, but I figured I'd see what everyone else thought about it. Some such articles have already been tagged, if no one objects, then we should go through all the "People of X descent" categories and untag them. Jwillbur 01:41, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Food and drink
I am wondering if caribbean specific food and drink articles should be in the scope of this project? Today I did a little fixing up to the Mauby article and thought perhaps articles like this should be within Project Caribbean. Russeasby 14:52, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

1833 0r 1834
The following message was left on my talk page (still there at top of page). It looks to me like it is correct about a consistent error but you are probably better qualified to track where it occurs--BozMo talk 18:35, 22 March 2007 (UTC):
Hello. Please pardon me if I'm in the wrong place to suggest needed edits (which I don't know how, nor feel qualified to make). The one needed is this: The link to the year 1834 includes a reference to the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. When you go to the Abolition Act link, you discover that slavery was abolished in the B.E. in 1833. (This coincides with the bio article on William Wilberforce.) Whenever there was a reference to this in country profiles of West Indies (Caribbean) nations, the date is wrong there too: they consistently use the year 1834, NOT the correct one: 1833. Thanks. CLC
- I saw something different. The Nation News paper in Barbados (Region marks end of slavery) stated the "Slave Trade Act" was enacted on March 25, 1807, but did not abolish slavery in British territories until 1833. CaribDigita 19:53, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Rumba and Rhumba
Whoever has written the article Rumba, an afro Cuban form of music based on drumming and chants, has got it confused with Rhumba a 1950s Cuban American form of jazz that is not the same thing, (Check this to confirm). The article Rumba therefore mixes the two in a way that is too difficult to extract on first glance. It needs to be rectified fast because its a major error on the part of wikipedia. Help would be welcomed.-- Zleitzen(talk) 19:27, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Help with images, licences, wikipedia requirements etc.
Hi there. I have some questions as it relates to images. Some people had posts "requesting images for article(s)" on a few articles of Barbados and I thought "ok". I should contribute some photos. However wikipedia has a very confusing licensing thing that they've got online now and I wonder if anyone has a understanding of the thing? E.g. what's the best license to use? Is it "GFDL?", "C.C.?", "GPL?". Is there anyway I can licence my photos just for noncommercial use? e.g. so they don't end up on so photoshop CD or something and then *that* company tells me-- that I'm infringing on their copyrighted image CD some day or something like that. I'd like to preserve the right where I can use the photos as well on my own website one day (hence why I took them) but I don't want to get shafted by some large company over my own photos. I don't care if other people use them or trade them but I think it's best if I keep large companies off them if at all possible. P.s. Wikipedia has an image upload tool. Should I use that? Or should I use WikiCommons for article based photos? What's the difference between uploading to either spot? CaribDigita 22:59, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hello CaribDigita. I recommend going onto the commons and uploading them under the creative commons sharealike license which you can read about here [2] . Take a look at the blurb attached to this image: Image:Ridley road market dalston 1.jpg. The option is on the drop down box of the upload page and will protect the image and yourself from any company attempting to do what you describe.-- Zleitzen(talk) 02:07, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Jamaica task force
I'm new to this project, but I've been editing on Wikipedia for about a year now, mostly with WP:AIR ariticles. I've done some editing on some Jamaica-related articles recently, and noticed that there wasn't a project to help co-ordinate such pages. It might be best to start out as a task force at first, especially if only a few members are interested in helping out. If the task force grows, we could expand to a full project at a later point. Hello everyone. The Cuban Portal has not been edited since early June, and has only received main contributions from one user, User:Zleitzen, who has stated that he/she is inactive for the foreseeable future (last edit on September 29, 2007, after no edits since July 23, 2007). The News section is completely outdated, although articles, pictures, and quotes are in a random quotation, so those aren't affected much. We need a dedicated user(s) who will take a little time of his/her week and update the page, by adding current news every few days and presenting articles, pictures, and quotes when good ones are found.
If the Portal isn't updated regularly, it may be automatically de-featured, since it may fail the FPO criteria #3(4): Featured portals that require maintenance and are not updated for three or more months are summarily demoted.
I'd offer myself for the job, but I'm already maintaining the Portal:Puerto Rico, and I'll be working on featuring other Portals soon. So, any volunteers? - Mtmelendez (Talk) 02:40, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Articles tagged for notability issues
WikiProject Notability has sorted articles with notability tags by their relevant WikiProjects here. These are the Caribbean-related articles and the date they were tagged. All these articles already appear on the project to-do list, but these few are more likely to be deleted than the rest.
- Northwest Haiti Christian Mission (August 2007)
- Anthony Ocaña (October 2007)
- Claude Dambreville (May 2007)
- Evan Parke (February 2008)
- Robin Bynoe (January 2008)
- Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (September 2007)
- Denise Belfon (December 2007)
- Kathleen Warner (June 2007)
- Ducana (June 2007)
They need to be expanded by using reliable sources or tagged for deletion if they really are non-notable. jwillbur 01:41, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Bynoe is a test cricketer, so he meets the standards of notability set by that WikiProject. "Aunty Kay" and Denise Belfon meet any standard of notability. As for the J'can Conference of Trade Unions...I can't figure out what's missing in terms of notability there. The rest probably need some refs. Guettarda (talk) 14:09, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Anthony Ocaña is bringing back 44,000 Yahoo! hits, there are some potential references in there wich should be enough to establish notability. - Caribbean~H.Q. 14:15, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Theatre and actors in Saint Domingue
When was the first theatre founded in Haiti? It would be interesting to read about the first theatres and some of the actors and actresses in 18th century Haiti. The articles about the History of Haiti on Wikipedia neclects pre-revolutionary history. Perhaps understandebly, yes, but it does not give a very complete view. It would be interesting to read about known people in 17th and 18th century Haiti; now, there is very little outside the political figures. --85.226.235.178 (talk) 11:20, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- You are right that there is not much on Wikipedia about pre-revolutionary Haiti, especially outside of politics and war. The closest thing we have on Wikipedia is Antoine Dupré, a playwright active during and immediately after the Revolution. I'm not an expert on the topic, but here's what I got from a few minutes of Google and JSTOR searching: This book talks about a theater in Cap-Français and says it was the oldest in Saint-Domingue, but doesn't give its name or when it was founded. There is an article in the Black Music Research Journal by David M. Powers which states that plays were performed in Saint Domingue as early as 1740, that there were at least eight theaters in Saint Domingue, and that the first one in Port au Prince was founded in 1762. As for theater people, two sisters named Lise and Minette were the most popular performers, according to the journal article. This book also mentions them. Both the book and the article also mention a producer and director named Labbé. If you can read French, Jean Fouchard wrote a couple books on the topic of early Haitian theater.
- I'm sure there is more information out there, but it is not very prevalent on the web, so you will probably have to go to a library to find more answers. jwillbur 05:26, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for answering! I hope someone will write about this sometime- Haiti, all countrys, was and is more than politics and war. The tips you gave was much interesting. I'll try and search some more. Thanks again!--85.226.235.178 (talk) 13:26, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Great Guana Cay page has map of the wrong island
I'm familiar with the Abaco Islands area of the Bahamas, and noticed that the map shown for Great Guana Cay, on the page of that name, shows a map of an island that is not the one with Kidd's cove, the 5.5 mile beach, the reefs, etc... There are other Guana Cays (Bitter Guana, for example), and I'm not sure if the one on the map is another Great Guana Cay, but it's definitely not the one discussed in the text.
The Great Guana Cay discussed in the text is a handful of miles north of Marsh Harbor, in the Abacos chain. The map pictured should be removed and ideally replaced with a correct one.
Alternatively, the page could be clarified to discuss multiple 'Great Guana Cay's if there are more than one.
216.41.24.3 (talk) 16:52, 26 June 2008 (UTC)djtaq
- I swapped out the map for one of the whole Bahamas. I wish we had a labeled close-up map of the Abaco Islands. It seems that there is a second "Great Guana Cay" in the Exumas (see this map, for example) between Bitter Guana and Little Farmer's Cays. No article on that one yet, but I've added a note to the top of Great Guana Cay. — jwillbur 20:25, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.
- The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
- The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
- A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.
Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! We used to anchor in what is now Half Moon Cay before the cruise line bought the Island. It was quiet, no one around except sailboats seeking a safe refuge/harbour. Pristine beach. Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Caribbean
Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.
We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.
A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.
We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:35, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
The 80-year anniversary of this storm is fast approaching, and the information on the storm in the Leeward Islands is badly lacking. The article is featured and has been considered for front-page inclusion but the shortage of information in certain areas, particularly Guadeloupe, is a major problem. WP:WPTC editors have been unable to find any good sources on the Guadeloupe effects, probably mostly because the country is French-speaking. Do you have anyone who can help? — jdorje (talk) 03:44, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Image needs replacement
Hello all...
An image used in the Callaloo article, specifically Image:Amaranthus spinosus c.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.
You have your mission, take your camera and start clicking.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 21:53, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group
Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.
All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. Panamá - Caribbean or Central American?
Maps show the Isthmus of Panamá as the land bridge between North and South American continents, but most Panamanians consider themselves to be part of the Caribbean. So maybe that's why Panamá is not listed as either one? On the Rivers of Central America and the Caribbean, there is not anything about Panamá! It has hundreds of rivers, the two most important ones are the Sixola which forms part of the western border between Panamá and Costa Rica on the Caribbean coast, and the Chagres -- the one that drove the French nuts when they tried to dig a canal across the isthmus but the American engineers tamed to feed the Panama Canal, which itself is more like a controlled river flowing between two oceans from a man-made lake, named Gatun. The rivers page needs the intelligent hand of a knowledgeable geographer not the father of a son whose homework led him to this page .. and its obvious missing information. GA Sweeps invitation
This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.
We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.
If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Haitian Americans
I don't know how much of a link a person should have to Haiti to make the list of Haitians. Since there is a list of Haitian Americans, shouldn't the Haitian Americans be taken off the list of Haitians if they weren't born in Haiti? Is there a precedence for this? Examples of people I believe should be taken off the list of Haitians are Elvis Dumervil, Pierre Thomas (American football), Pierre Garcon. These people were born in the U.S. and do not have Haitian citizenship that I could find evidence of. There are many others. It seems to me if these people are to be left on the list of Haitians then the list of Haitian Americans should be deleted entirely and those people should just be placed on the list of Haitians. Is it OK to do this myself? Also I took it upon myself to change Pierre Thomas to Pierre Thomas (American football) because the Pierre Thomas link is a France born author. On a side note I'm new to Wikipedia so if I violated any Wiki rules or etiquette please let me know. Kgromann (talk) 02:31, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons
The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.
Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Caribbean/Unreferenced BLPs. Currently you have approximately 160 articles to be referenced. Other project lists can be found at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates and User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects.
Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:14, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Problematic edits on Calypso
Hi
I am concerned that a user - Howie Bledsoe - is editing articles and not listening to advice. I tried to help him by copyediting one article for him, Lovey's String Band, put the refs in properly and left a note on his talk page User_talk:Howie_Bledsoe#Editing with advice on how to improve his edits.
I have told him that he needs to check his edits as there have been many cases of him incorrectly adding carriage returns and spaces. This is resulting in articles wiht 6 or 7 paragraphs ending up being one huge paragraph such as Calypso music(where the lead summary is now longer than the article itself) Wilmoth_Houdini, Blake Alphonso Higgs, Lionel Belasco, Harry Belafonte#Film career and Lionel Belasco.
You also now have a List of calypso musicians that is peppered with red links introduced mainly by him.
He is also refusing to add edit summaries, in the around 100 edits he has done there is NOT ONE summary
Can someone have a look at his work please before this gets out of hand.
He is a new user and I am trying to give him leeway before starting more vigourous methods of control
(I have also posted this on the Calypso portal and the WikiProject Musicians)

Trinidad and Caribbean / Latino Food
Please note when writing articles about the foods from these regions:
1. Although cassava is the same thing as yucca, we do not call the veggie cassava. Its is known as a yucca. 2. There is no such thing as a frying a green banana ... it is a fried plantain or as we call it a plantano. 3. Also a habanero is much weaker in strength than a scotch bonnet. 4. Northern Mexico's food is more in tune with the SW United States (Texas, etc - Not Latino). It is not similar to the rest of Latin America's food. The rest of us do not eat flat corn hard tacos, unless it is a Dorito or Taco Bell. We also do not use jalapeños much in cooking (they are a side dish), soft chorrizo, or a lot of cilantro in our food. 5. People in the Caribbean eat more fish & chicken than beef or pork. We also use more lime than lemon.
All I want is for those writing the various articles to stop basing them on Arizona, Texas, and Northern Mexico. That's not "Latino", its US "Anglo-American". Louisiana creole is much closer to what is eaten from Southern Mexico to Argentina.
Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sentrix (talk • contribs) 18:36, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
Caribbean articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Caribbean articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Jean Baptiste Riché
The article on Riché says he was born a slave of unknown parents in 1780. What source is there for this? I study free people of color in pre-revolutionary Haiti and I have seen numerous records related to a free family of color named Riché in the area of Cap Haitien. Jean-Baptiste was a name given to at least one member of this family. I always assumed that the revolutionary leader and short-time President was a member of this family. Any comments?
Bondservants in Jamaica
I've noticed that I haven't seen anything about bondservants in the history of Jamaica. There is information about the Tainos, the British, the Spanish, the Africans, as well as the indentured labourers who came from Asia; but absolutely no information on the people who came from Europe under contract work. Can this be addressed soon please?

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none
parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Even though many of our islands are called Cays this one was given the designation of a Quarters making Lubbers Quarters Cay a redundant statement kind of like saying Madison Avenue Boulevard. It is also written so on the original survey maps.
Thank you,

WikiProject cleanup listing
I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:23, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Popular pages
Would anyone be opposed to adding this project to the Popular pages project? This will cause a list of the most popular (based on pageview statistics) pages within the scope of the project to be created monthly. This is a useful tool to identify frequently-viewed pages that are not up to par, quality-wise. For a project like this one, it may also help to clarify its current scope and so assist in the refining of the scope. See for example Wikipedia:WikiProject Argentina/Popular pages. I propose a move of the Anglophone Caribbean page to Commonwealth Caribbean. The former term isn't in common use and appears to be effectively a Wikipedia construct. See Google book results:

Having perused through the pages entitled "English people of Jamaican Origin" I have to completetly disagree with your premise. None of these people are English! They may be British as may anyone from any country in the world who wishes to become a naturalised Briton. But English..never. There is a very big difference between English, Scottish, Irish & Welsh and British. You try telling any Scotsman, Irishman or Welshman that he is British and he will probably have you by the throat! The same applies to an Englishman. The sooner people accept that we are all different ethnic nationalities and learn to live with each other as that, the better. There is nothing wrong with being proud of who you are or where your ethnic origins lie. These people on your list should be proud of being of Jamaican and their heritage and stop trying to be someone they're not. In the USA it's almost compulsory to "fly the flag". Here it's a dirty word to call yourself English but it's Ok if you're Scottish, Irish or Welsh. Someone's got to stand up for the English and be counted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.109.123.86 (talk) 12:31, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Maritime borders
I don't know where else to post this, but I've started an effort to draw the maritime borders on a map of the Caribbean. WikiWomen's History Month
Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Caribbean will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Caribbean's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Proposed New Article Gender inequality in the Caribbean
Hey everyone. I am proposing a new article on Gender inequality in the Caribbean. The general aim is to extend knowledge on Wikipedia about gender relations in the Caribbean region. I will be using scholarly articles and other well recognized books and sources on gender disparities to complete this article. It will be an invaluable addition to the Wiki Project Caribbean. I will focus on gender disparities in education, healthcare, and the workforce. The Caribbean is under represented on Wikipedia as are the issues of gender inequalities around the world. I am working on this project with the guidance of skilled professors at Rice University and a banner about our project can be found one the talk page of the article. Any feedback and suggestions for improvement will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Bellechic (talk) 23:11, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Just a heads up, the aforementioned article is now at FAC. The hurricane caused serious damage across the eastern Caribbean, get this, in November. And, it struck from the west, which is unheard of. Some feedback would be interested, notably if the coverage is lacking for any islands. The storm was recent enough that people in the project might remember it. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:06, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean
I’m interested in substantially editing the existing article HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. The current entry is in need of improvement in many areas. As the second-most affected region in the world, the Caribbean needs an article that fully details its HIV/AIDS crisis. In comparison to the HIV/AIDS in Africa article, this article has very little information and no real references. I hope to add sections on the history of the disease in the region, some of the factors that have perpetuated its spread, groups that have been severely affected, examples of how the disease has affected Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Cuba, as well as some of the current responses for prevention and treatment being carried out by different countries. In these subsections, I hope to explore in detail the relation of HIV/AIDS to poverty, youth, gender, tourism, and homosexuality in the Caribbean. I plan on using sources such as the International Journal on STD & AIDS, The West Indian Medical Journal, Health Policy and Planning, the UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, and Science. I would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions that you all have, as I hope to make the HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean article as strong as possible. Twoods158 (talk) 05:46, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Education in Haiti
I am interested in revising the entry “Education in Haiti.” It is clearly evident that the “Education in Haiti” article exemplifies a poor quality article by the standards set out by Wikipedia. Many sections of the article make very few references and make many claims without supportive citations. I wish to add more content to the page. With an increase in the content on the page, the quality of the article will improve dramatically. I feel as if many aspects of the topic are missing such as the privatization of education, access and equity, funding, recent reforms and effects of the 2010 Earthquake on education, etc.
I will be exploring suitable references by exploring these journals: The Journal of Comparative Education, The Journal of Negro History, The Caribbean Quarterly, and Comparative Education Review. I will also explore articles from the World Bank, as well as official government documentation about education from the Haitian Government’s Ministry of Education.
I would appreciate any feedback that would help me on my quest to revise this entry. Any suggestions on possible difficulties or certain references to explore, or general comments about possible sections that should be included in the revised entry would be greatly appreciated.

Just lettin' y'all know
Proving once and for all that I'm a giant wikignome, I just wanted to bring to the attention of this WikiProject that I'm a Canadian who doesn't know Caribbean politics from a hole in my head, and depending on one's time zone it's currently December 1 — and yet I've ended up doing quite a bit of overdue cleanup work in the past 12 hours or so on both Turks and Caicos Islands general election, 2012 (which was three weeks ago) and Bahamian general election, 2012 (which was seven months ago.)
My guess is that the Bahamian one never really got dealt with because {{Bahamas general election, 2012 comprehensive}} was needlessly confusing, making extensive use of "timeline" coding to visualize the election percentages — accordingly, what I've done is to import a simplified version of the table that we use for Canadian election results, so that the coding was a lot less complex. That done, it ended up being quite easy to locate a proper source to complete the table with the appropriate numbers.
But just wanted y'all to be aware that some gaps are getting noticed and worked on. Bearcat (talk) 06:14, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

I have been looking at the page "Demographics of the Dominican Republic".
I am confused by the following which appears below CIA World Factbook statistics: "Population: 3,098 (November 2011 est)".
Surely the population of the Dominican Republic is about 9.5 million as shown near the top of the article, not 3,098.
3,098 happens to be the height (in meters) of the republic's highest mountain, Pico Duarte.

Google Maps and the "Explore a location through geographically based Wikipedia articles"
I posted this on the Arrondissements of Haiti talk page but also wanted to mention it here. I use Google Maps quite often to look up a place I am reading about. I especially like it because of the option it has to give me a snippet of a Wikipedia article related to a location and then if I wish to read the whole article I can easily open it from there. Anyway, I was looking up something in Mumbai, India and after I found what I was looking for, I began just browsing through some of the Wikipedia links. I am especially intrigued by the things that are shown as being in the middle of a large body of water, such as the Arabian Sea off the west coast of Indian. Imagine my surprise when I began reading about places with French names. Odd to me since I knew India has such a major British influence and well, Britain and France don't have the best of histories to say the least. So as I began reading more closely, I noticed the places were Haitian Arrondissements, which explained the French names. But what were they doing in the Arabian Sea was my next question. I didn't recall Haiti being near India from my various world geography lessons in school. So I started checking the articles and quickly found out why they were showing up in the Arabia Sea rather than the Caribbean. The ones appearing in the Arabian Sea had the longitude coordinate listed as x°y'z" EAST rather than the correct x°y'z" WEST. So below is a list of the places I changed. There are two non-arrondissements I changed as well; the coordinates for the Battle of Estrelleta and Rivière de l'Estère.

Leaflet For Wikiproject Caribbean At Wikimania 2014
Hi all,
My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:
• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

Mistake
In 1803, ships carrying Haitian refugees trying to escape the turmoil of the Revolution arrived on the Cuban shores. Though all the passengers onboard had been legally free in Haiti for years, upon their arrival they were considered slaves. The white people on the ship were allowed passage into Cuba, but those that were black or mulato were not – being held, at José Martí’s suggestion, on the ship in the harbor as a type of floating prison.
This is from the "Slavery in Cuba" entry. This must be an error, since José Marti was not even born in 1803. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.111.107.77 (talk) 16:09, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Caricom flag
The Caricom flag should not be used to represent the Greater Antilles, It is a bit misleading taking into account that the largest and most populous island of Cuba with 11 million people is not a member of Caricom neither is Dominican Republic with its nearly 10 million inhabitants, or Puerto Rico which is a us territory. Removing the flag would make this help to make this article better; no flag needs to be used to represent the whole of the Greater Antilles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.188.23.204 (talk) 00:58, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

I would like to call your attention to a proposal for splitting the Haitian Revolution article. We welcome your participation. Thanks. Caballero/Historiador ⎌ 23:41, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
- Splitting? How so? Savvyjack23 (talk) 00:36, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking. More than splitting, the proposal is to grow or engender another article from of it, one temporarily named "Haitian Revolutionary Wars," much in the image of the split that exists in the French and American Revolutions' articles. And move the bulk of the military material to this new article. Part of the disorder, contradiction, and misinformation that prevails in the HR article owns to the confusion between armed conflict and the revolutionary process. Look, for example, at the attempt to create an infobox about an armed conflict that would incorporate the entire HR. Where would you put Toussaint? He fought for the Spanish, for the French, but also against the Spanish, British and French. What about the casualties? Where are the numbers? Moreover, what would you call the Blacks who died in battle between the years 1793 and 1803? Slaves? Not even their enemies called them so (the colonists preferred to call them "negroes", but they knew well they were no slaves anymore). None of this is apparent in the current article. But most importantly, as I explained in the article's Talk Page, to keep the article as it is, is to give the impression that the Revolution was a war that lasted for more than 12 years, and to reduce it to a military conflict, or worse, to a simple slave revolt. I suggest the plural "Wars" at the end of the new title (differently from the American Revolutionary War) because they were several wars, not all fought with the same objective. In other words, they are not as neatly organized as the French and American military conflicts; there is more ambiguity in the HR. Would appreciate your thoughts in the article's Talk Page. Economy of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Page
Greetings,
I noticed this page had a reference to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines score in the 2010 Index of Economic Freedom. The company I work for, The Heritage Foundation, produces that report, and since 2010, their rank has gone from 49 to 40 (http://www.heritage.org/index/country/saintvincentgrenadines). If another editor could make that edit to avoid COI it would be much appreciated.

Medalist?
I was wondering which way the various Caribbean Englishes spells this word, "medalist" (1-L) or "medallist" (2-L's) ; I noticed that Category:Olympic medalists for Jamaica and other Caribbean nations uses one, while Category:Olympic medallists for Great Britain uses two. -- 65.94.171.217 (talk) 23:21, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Notice to participants at this page about adminship
Many participants here create a lot of content, have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are just some of the skills considered at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.
So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:

Media upload of historical photographs of the French West Indies and Netherlands Antilles
Dear editors,
I would like to draw your attention to a media upload that may be of relevance to this page:
The Temminck Groll Collection consists of 2,641 historical photographs taken by the Dutch architect and architectural historian Coen Temminck Groll (1925-2015). The photos were taken in regions with which the Dutch have had historical relations, including countries in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia (see the category description for a full listing). The photos were taken during Temminck Groll's travels and study of 'shared cultural heritage' (heritage of the Netherlands located outside the country’s borders) and mainly date to the 1960s and 1970s. The photographs were digitised by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and made available to Wikimedia Commons in the context of the project The Netherlands and the world. If you have any questions about this upload, or have other media requests regarding Dutch shared cultural heritage, don't hesitate to leave a message at the project page!

Popular pages report
We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Caribbean/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Caribbean.
We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:
- The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
- The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
- The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).
We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Caribbean, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Closed category loop
There appears to be at least one (possibly several) closed loops in the category tree that includes Category:British Leeward Islands, which is contrary to WP:SUBCAT. For example: Category:British Leeward Islands has a subcategory Category:History of the British Leeward Islands, which has a subcategory Category:History of Antigua and Barbuda, which has a subcategory Category:British Leeward Islands. Likewise via Category:History of Anguilla, Category:History of Montserrat etc. Could some more familiar with the subject please fix the closed loops. Mitch Ames (talk) 00:12, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject
Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.
A list of the relevant links on pages which fall within the remit of this wikiproject can be found at http://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/cgi-bin/topic_points.py?banner=WikiProject_Caribbean
Please take a few minutes to help make these more useful to our readers.— Rod talk 14:01, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:28, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Anguilla demonym
There is currently a mix of articles and categories in Category:Anguilla which use either "Anguillan" or "Anguillian". Mostly, the former dominates at the moment. A search reveals both are in use with about a 30/70 split in the volume of hits for the terms. Does anyone with more local knowledge know the implications of the difference? I suppose we should settle on using one term for consistency and ensure redirects are present for the other term. SFB 13:48, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? New bot to remove completed infobox requests
Hello! I have recently created a bot to remove completed infobox requests and am sending this message to WikiProject Caribbean since the project currently has a backlogged infobox request category. Details about the task can be found at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/PearBOT 2, but in short it removes all infobox requests from articles with an infobox, once a week. To sign up, reply with {{ping|Trialpears}} and tell me if any special considerations are required for the Wikiproject. For example: if only a specific infobox should be detected, such as {{infobox journal}} for WikiProject Academic Journals; or if an irregularly named infobox such as {{starbox begin}} should be detected. Thoughts on a Use Standard Caribbean English template for articles
As far as I can see, at present there are two templates for articles to define which form of English to use {{Use Jamaican English}}
and {{Use Trinidadian English}}
in the region (with Use British English or US English being inappropriate on numerous levels). There has been discussion over a number of years regarding creation of individual country templates, but consensus seems against this where English is used in the Caribbean, since we are categorising written, rather than spoken English (and we are not producing articles in the varieties of Caribbean Creole English on English Wikipedia). I wonder if what would be better is a template named "Use Standard Caribbean English" as this is generally the term used in academic literature on Caribbean English to discuss the use of English in the Caribbean for professional, legal, formal etc purposes.[1][2][3][4]

- Perhaps we should make sure there is indeed a standard Caribbean English that has a high degree of commonality before consolidating to a Caribbean English template. Also, {{EngvarB}} may be another possible template to indicate common British-based writing forms. There could be vocabulary differences to consider as well, as may be described at Jamaican English Trinidadian and Tobagonian English. Ohconfucius will likely have further insights into this. Dl2000 (talk) 02:47, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- Can you give some examples of code variations where the use of British or American codes/templates are inappropriate? The "Use XYZ English" templates were created to facilitate semi-automated editing and aligning of spellings of major codes of English recognised on en.WP, each with their distinctive spelling variants, namely American English, Commonwealth English, British English Oxford spelling, Canadian English. None of the templates are displaying and are used exclusively for maintenance and does not affect words that are unique to other variants such as Trinidad or Jamaican. I am not in favour of taking the code variants too far away from the 4 major codes nor do I favour proliferation of these additional templates, which are of no use to editors using the script and which cause unnecessary clutter IMHO (much better to have an explicit editnotice to draw editors' attention where it's desired. Note that "EngvarB" was named not as a general use template – it's not in plain English – but was named so as to be identificable for maintenance. I would advise editors of Commonwealth articles to stick to using the {{EngvarB}}. -- Ohc ¡digame! 10:26, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

- For what it's worth, if there's a "Commonwealth" English, it should include Commonwealth countries like Canada and the UK. Otherwise it's just "Commonwealth countries that aren't white (plus AUS and NZ). Guettarda (talk) 16:49, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

- I wonder how useful this will be for general run of editors. I have edited several articles related to the Bahamas, and I have some feeling for the differences between American and British English, but I have no feeling for what is distinctive about Bahamian English. If we want to warn users not to change spellings, etc. without having a good understanding about what is accepted by speakers in a particular country, then a fairly generic notice should suffice. - Donald Albury 22:29, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) I think it is very important to acknowledge that while this may mostly be a technical issue, it is not *solely* a technical issue. To my understanding of academic discussion, Commonwealth English is effectively Standard British English (which is why the expression is so inappropriate for most of the world, leaving aside that expression is confusing and conflates too much). There are multiple RS discussing Standard Caribbean English; there is no debate as to its existence. At present, the current templates force an editor working on issues related to the Caribbean to use politically and linguistically inappropriate categorisations (eg in an article on Grenada, there is actually no appropriate template at present). From what I am aware of given the sourcing, the use of English for formal, professional, legalistic *written* purposes is relatively homogeneous across the Caribbean (this was a deliberate policy of the newly independent states in the region following decolonisation, beginning with the Caribbean Lexicography Project at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill). My proposal was specifically in line with decreasing proliferation; ie that a template for Caribbean subject matter be created that would merge the existing Jamaican and Trinidadian templates into a regional Caribbean template (ie Use Standard Caribbean English). I'm not unsympathetic to the point of view about semi-automated editing, but this proposal would reduce categorisations, rather than increase. At the same time, I struggle to believe that facility of (semi-automated) editing is mutually exclusive from (or trumps) appropriate categorisations. The article St. Vincent Grammar School has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No reliable secondary sources in its 9.69-year history; no evidence of meeting the notability guideline
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Fourthords | =Λ= | 00:02, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Project-independent quality assessments
Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:55, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

Change Great Pond from requested article to name change request?
Hi! I started working on a draft for Great Pond (Saint Croix), which is listed as a requested article. However, I just discovered that the article "Great Pond, U.S. Virgin Islands" already exists. Should I request a name change for that article? Or should I just remove Great Pond (Saint Croix) from the requested articles list. Thanks - CareAhLine (talk) 21:57, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Natural features, which links to Wikipedia:WikiProject Lakes#Naming, the title of the article should be Great Pond (Saint Croix) or Great Pond (U.S. Virgin Islands), as the current title implies a populated place in the U.S. (including its territories). I will propose a page move for the article. Donald Albury 00:57, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
