Recent edit to US 491

Please add some context to your recent edit to U.S. Route 491. I'm scratching my head going, what does a highway in New Mexico, Colorado and Utah have to do with a ski jump in Lake Placid, New York. If I had to guess it has something to do with the fact that Devils Highway redirects to this page. Weather it does or doesn't the connection between these two articles needs to be made clear, or the addition needs to be reverted. Davemeistermoab (talk) 01:48, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

From the initial evidence I'd say the bobsled course does not merit inclusion on a dab or redirect page. Devils highway is only mentioned once in the bobsledding article, in a table. It is never referred to by this name even once in prose. Applying the "google standard" I've skimmed the first 5 pages of results for a search for "Devils Highway". Not a single hit that I see refers to a bobsled course in New York. How would it fare in the locals or enthusiasts tests? I.E. If I walk up to a group of bobsledders in California (far from NY) or a local in upstate New York and say "have you done the Devil's highway?" Will they instantly know I'm asking about bobsled course in Lake Placid?
Apply those same standards to US 491: Google standard: About a third of the hits on the first 5 pages are clearly referring to a highway in the Four Corners, including 4 hits on the first page. However, A significant number refer to a 2006 novel (first 4 hits) and a different highway on the Mexican border near Ajo, Arizona. Doing the locals/enthusiast test: If you ask anybody from the Four Corners about the Devils highway they WILL direct you to US491/666/191, guaranteed. If you ask roadgeeks, I'm guessing you'd get directed to US 491 from most US based roadgeeks, but not always. So based on that thoroughly authoritative and unquestionable research =-) Having wikipedia redirect Devils highway exclusively to US491 is ok for now, but inappropriate once the Ajo road and novel have wikipedia entries. At that point is should be in the top 3 links on the dab page.

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Aoife Hoey (bobsleigh), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. AfD nomination of Aoife Hoey (bobsleigh)

An editor has nominated Aoife Hoey (bobsleigh), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Aoife Hoey (bobsleigh) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 18:29, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Articles tagged with {{prod}} where the deletion is contested should go to AfD. That has now happened, so from a procedural point of view all is now correct, and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Aoife Hoey (bobsleigh) is the appropriate place for discussion - if information has since been removed the article, you can point this out there. Articles can be nominated for deletion more than once, but if the previous nomination resulted in a keep they tend to result in a keep again unless there is a compelling argument which was missed the first time. Oldelpaso (talk) 19:52, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
An abuse report seems rather drastic, this is a content dispute, which hopefully an AfD will go a long way to resolving. Oldelpaso (talk) 23:22, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Abuse report

Thank you for making a report at Wikipedia:Abuse reports. Unfortunately, this IP has not been blocked enough times, and therefore does not merit an abuse report. Next time, please make sure that the IP in question has been blocked at least five times in recent history.Thank you. Nburden (T) 17:20, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I suggest that if you feel that way, you let some admins know at WP:AN/I. Nburden (T) 21:05, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Re: Siobhán Hoey

Hmmm, I'm not entirely sure what happened there, but the AfD template was added by an IP who improperly nominated it, so it wasn't up for deletion at all. The discussion that was linked was from last April, and was already closed with keep. (?!) I didn't actually realise that when I removed the AfD notice, but that was a good reason to remove it anyway. • Anakin (talk) 22:42, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

--Archtransit (talk) 17:55, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome. Could you check the official name of the track? Does it have slashes " / " in the name? If not, a rename may be good. At Wikipedia, it's best if we can be as precise and accurate as possible, even down to punctuation. Archtransit (talk) 21:55, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Chris, I'm sorry it wasn't meant to be looking like that, I will change the wordings I use there. Iameddie (talk) 14:04, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Aoife Hoey

No problem at all; the precedent if it gets deleted really worries me. I do most of my editing in sport related articles, and once you start deleting stuff like this that clearly meets the requirements, they get more and more restricted...and I certainly don't want that! matt91486 (talk) 18:32, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

This whole situation is very suspicious. The only people voting delete are all Dublin based IPs. matt91486 (talk) 22:35, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, it's annoying, mainly because the IP insists on nominating a variety of Ireland athletics articles instead of just one. It seems pretty logical that they'll all be kept, though, at least. I have to imagine the closing admins in each scenario are going to look at it and go with keep. If not, we can (and should) request a deletion review. But I'm pretty confident the admins will close it sensibly. matt91486 (talk) 23:54, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
That's a really motivated vandal, though. I wonder why he is so; does he just he just really hate the Irish athletics association for some personal reason or something? It's definitely the hardest working POV problem I've seen. matt91486 (talk) 16:13, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Glad to help Miller17CU94. Unfortunately there are lots of logged-out users (and logged in) with strong points-of-view to push. Luckily they get bored after a while and get back to real life. Be patient and they'll probably give up. Happy editing- Peripitus (Talk) 05:27, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you (re: medal template)

Chris:

You can tell I'm a really green wikipedian and a net idiot. Thanks for rescuing the WTC template from my inept hands. LOL. I created one specifically for "World Gymnastics Championships" as well as ones for "European Gymnastics Championships" and "World Gymnastics Cup". Although all are hyperlinked, only the former has an existing page, although when/if the latter two are created, they should then link to the pages I've made and will made and will edit so everthing is nice and hyperlinked and cross-referential.

Thank you so much for keeping the standards up, both technically and civilly.

Hi Chris, many thanks for that message re the anonymous and persistent Dublin IP address! I was starting to wonder if I was paranoid or was doing sth wrong. I think it's time to report those range of IP addresses to a Wiki administrator and request action. You seem a wee bit more clued in about it than me, so do you want to go ahead and add my support as a long-time editor of articles in the snooker category?
