DYK for Grace Ho

[edit]

On 12 April 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Grace Ho, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Hong Kong native Grace Ho gave birth to her fourth child, Bruce Lee, while on a one-year tour through the United States with the Mandarin Theatre? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Grace Ho. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Grace Ho), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hello, Johnson524

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Meena, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I've proposed an article that you started, List of years in Transnistria, for deletion because it meets one or more of our deletion criteria, and I don't think that it is suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. The particular issue can be found in the notice that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you wish to contest the deletion:

MOS:CAPS

[edit]

Hi,

At Attempted assassination of Imran Khan, could you please take care not to add capitalizations in the middle of sentences, like you did here? Each sentence starts with the name of the country. I'm resorting to the talk page because I have had to remove capitalizations in two separate instances. The relevant guideline is MOS:CAPS. Thanks. Pilaz (talk) 23:56, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Pilaz, I am sorry for the mistake, but where was the miscapitalization? Johnson524 (Talk!) 00:00, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There were a few instances, but for example, I corrected  Egypt: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attempted assassination to  Egypt: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attempted assassination. Pilaz (talk) 00:11, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry! I have not had a chance to edit often in bulleted lists, so I was unaware of the issue. Just with a glance at the page I couldn't see where the problem was as it was pretty minor, but see now. Thanks! Johnson524 (Talk!) 00:17, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The {{Wikinews}} template should not be used in the body of an article. See Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 152#Restrict Wikinews links in articles.-gadfium 04:48, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Gadfium, thank you for informing me! I didn't know about this discussion, so thank you for linking it. I do have one question though if you have the answer. As discussed in the linked proposal, while Wikinews publishes far less news than it did pre-2012, I feel that is in part because of better and more strict criteria to meet for an article to be published, with quite a few recent articles going stale before the appropriate changes could be made. For this reason, I would argue that directly-relating Wikinews made recently should not be blocked from being included in directly-relating article sections. Do you know if this discussion has been had more recently for modern Wikinews, or is this the latest one? I'm just curious, but either way I will not be linking in the article body unless things change from now on. Thanks again! Johnson524 (Talk!) 04:33, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I only know about that discussion because it was linked from the Wikinews template. I assume from that there hasn't been any subsequent re-evaluation.-gadfium 04:40, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I appreciate it 😁 Johnson524 (Talk!) 04:49, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Mandera Prison

The article Mandera Prison you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Mandera Prison for comments about the article, and Talk:Mandera Prison/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Articles

[edit]

I was kinda provoked only for Mikasa's sake, but if there is another character who could easily get another article based on what I read is Levi. When I kept reading the awards the Attack on Titan anime got in the article, I noticed there were several about Levi. However, I never got the chance to read his own series so I have no knowledge about it. If you are interested, I could at least leave some sources in the talk page. Tintor2 (talk) 23:30, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Tintor2: Sure yeah, I would appreciate it 🙂 I will say though, I jump around a lot on the project, so the article might not be made immediately if that's alright with you. Johnson524 (Talk!) 23:33, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. By the way, I haven't checked but the trivia sections from the Attack on Titan wiki helped me a lot to expand the creation of both Eren and Mikasa since they cited commentary from Isayama. Not sure if Levi's article is also filled with commentary from Isayama though.Tintor2 (talk) 23:36, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tintor2: I'll have to check, but thanks for the head's up! Johnson524 (Talk!) 23:37, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I don't plan to nominate the articles (I'm currently busy with Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (film)) but in the case you are interested I recommend you copyediting it first since I'm not a native English speaker.Tintor2 (talk) 23:45, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Tintor2: Ok, I may do that. Also, good luck on the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 article! (Oh and P.S., The Guild of Copy Editors are doing a backlog drive on articles in need of copy editing this month. You probably knew that, so the reason mentioning it is because I'm not the best at copy editing, but as long as you tag the top of the page with the 'in need of copy editing' tag, any issues should be fixed by them. Also, sorry for the later response 😅) Johnson524 (Talk!) 02:41, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I already requested two copyedits from them so I can't really asked them anything more.Tintor2 (talk) 03:46, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I got carried away by the spinoff that basically proves Levi is a breakout character and made an article for him. Feel free to edit any article.Tintor2 (talk) 01:16, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Mandera Prison

On 26 March 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mandera Prison, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Mandera Prison

[edit]

I corrected the coordinates you gave for Mandera Prison, which pointed a spot outside the grounds. I'm always curious to learn how users make errors when putting coordinates on Wikipedia; how did you obtain your coordinates? Abductive (reasoning) 16:40, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Abductive: In this case, I used Google Maps 😅 I personally thought the coordinates looked correct, but I guess they were not, so thank you for your edit! While you're here, what do you use or do to find accurate coordinates? Cheers! Johnson524 (Talk!) 17:35, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In general, I use OSM and Wikimapia. For example, Hearst Castle is being nominated for DYK. The coordinates currently in the article point to some sagebrush near the property. This is typical of the sloppy government work by the National Register of Historic Places. In Wikimapia, one can switch between Google, Google Terrain, Bing and OSM; and line up the crosshairs to see the coordinates displayed in the lower left corner. Abductive (reasoning) 21:28, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Abductive: I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the info! Johnson524 (Talk!) 21:29, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:Denys Davydov channel logo.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Denys Davydov channel logo.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 12:27, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Denys Davydov moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Denys Davydov, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 10:50, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ukraine war bloggers

[edit]

Hello. Some weeks ago you created a page for Denys Davydov. I was surprised by its quality as it was well-written, well-formated and it really looked like you had researched and used everything you could find. But he does not seem like a notable individual for having a Wikipedia article to me, so I was not surprised when the article was draftified.

I think Artur Rehi is the war blogger on the invasion of Ukraine that has the most to offer, at least on the pro-Ukrainian side. He has been an actor in some movies, and I believe he graduated from a notable arts academy in the United States, which gave him some media attention. He has also done some benefic projects for getting Ukraine some trucks which also put his name on some headlines. The majority of sources are in Estonian though, as he's from there.

I don't even know if you would be interested in doing it, so take this message as a simple idea for a potential article in the future. Hopefully it will catch your attention, no problem if it doesn't. Regards, Super Ψ Dro 16:41, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Super Dromaeosaurus, and thank you for reaching out! I was thinking about contacting you earlier to thank you for the thank notifications you have given me on some other articles I've recently created. I just want to say I'm really appreciative 🙂
As for the Artur Rehi article, I'm all for the idea! I am personally a little discouraged by the failure of the similar article at the immediate moment, but will definitely research him within June and reply back- if you don't beat me to it lol. Thank you again for reaching out ~ Johnson524 (Talk!) 20:09, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(That's where my reply ends, but if you want to hear more about the Denys Davydov article, I talked about it a little more here if you're interested): I only created the article after I found out that he was the most viewed individual covering the war in Ukraine, and after I was able to find three independent citations about him, primarily because Wikipedia appeared to have a general lack in coverage of Ukrainian war bloggers, which I figured would be a good article to make since this is how many I know here in the US stay informed about the war. I thought I had established notability and coverage, but when one of my citations got marked as unreliable, which I had not known about previously as it didn't look unprofessional, and the fact that my other two citations were more mentions than complete reports about him, I fully agree the article needed taken down at that point. I do plan to hopefully bring it back into the mainspace at some point when there is more coverage though. Johnson524 (Talk!) 20:09, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, thank you for your hard work. I don't think there will be a problem with Artur Rehi as he at least gives off some WP:NOTABILITY due to having several outlets talking about him. In all honesty Davydov never looked notable to me. I'd recommend to research first on Rehi and to make sure there are enough independent sources talking about him and only if you're sure there are then you could start writing. Someone with only three such sources like Davydov is for sure not notable.
It is true that there's very few war bloggers with articles in Wikipedia but I am not that surprised. They're after all just normal people who talk about the war on camera, no qualification needed. Davydov for example was just a pilot before starting his videos. I follow a total of four war bloggers: Artur Rehi, Denys Davydov, Reporting from Ukraine (we don't even know his real name) and Jake Broe. I also know some several others that I don't regularly get updates from. I would doubt if any of these apart of Rehi could have enough sources talking about them as to make them pages, it is definitively an obscure world for Wikipedia, and the number of articles we will have on these will probably remain low.
Message me if you need any help in the future with this project. Regards and thank you for your interest! Super Ψ Dro 22:51, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Super Dromaeosaurus for your thorough response, and I'll be sure to comment back here when I start on Artur Rehi or if I get anymore word on the Denys article (but you may be right that he just isn't notable enough for Wikipedia). I also follow Reporting from Ukraine, and it is kind of crazy to think we know literally nothing about the guy who runs it. He really stays strictly true to his name! ~ Johnson524 (Talk!) 03:28, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Signature of Elaine M. O'Neal, Mayor, City of Durham, NC

[edit]

Hello, Johnson524. I am the City Attorney for the City of Durham, North Carolina. Mayor Elaine O'Neal's City staff recently noticed that an image of her signature had been added to her Wikipedia page, which raised concern about the presence of the unauthorized signature on the page increasing the likelihood of signature fraud. In looking at the pages for Mayor O'Neal's two immediate predecessors in office (Steve Schewel preceded by Bill Bell), it is notable that neither of their pages has an image of the official's signature. The Mayor's Office requested that the City Attorney's Office investigate how her signature was added to the page and for what purpose. The Mayor further requested that the City Attorney's Office reach out to legal counsel at Wikimedia Foundation to ask that they disclose the identity of the party who uploaded the signature image and also that they permanently remove the signature image from her page and prohibit its public display on the page in the future. Before reaching out to Wikimedia's general counsel, however, I thought I would first try to resolve this amicably through user channels. I have edited the page today to remove the signature image. If on your end you can permanently delete the .jpeg that you uploaded, I ask that you do so immediately. Thank you for your prompt attention to this request.

Please feel free to contact me if you need to discuss this matter (Redacted)

Regards, Kimberly M. Rehberg Durham City Attorney Kimlynn69 (talk) 20:11, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Kimlynn69, and thank you for contacting me and not the Wikimedia foundation, as that would be the wrong place to go to in this case. To explain how I got the signature, I obtained it from a letter by the Mayor in a pamphlet given out at a DPAC performance I went to. I had only once before this time had the opportunity to go to DPAC, so I was very excited, and not so much thinking about the privacy side of the letter. After reading the mayors (very kind) message and seeing her signature, I thought it could also make a good addition to the encyclopedia- as seen on bigger articles such as those of Joe Biden, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Roy Cooper, etc. I realize now that the threat of signature fraud is a real one, and I am terribly ashamed those actions. I assure you I meant no harm with edit, and I thank you for already reverting my edit on the mayor's page. Please contact me back here or on my cell phone, which I left you a message on, if you have anymore questions. Wikipedia and Wikimedia take copyright and privacy very seriously, and only allow free content and information on their website(s), in which this was a violation of. While signatures are included on those bigger articles which I previously mentioned and wanted to replicate, that is also because those signatures are far more publicly displayed than that of the mayor's, which is purposely not. The .jpeg signature file should be down approximately within a day. Thank you again for reaching out. Humbly, Johnson524 (Talk!) 00:42, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On 10 July 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Japan–Korea Joint Development Zone, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Hi Johnson524, thank you for creating high-quality articles like this one, and for the great work you do elsewhere on Wikipedia! I was sorry to learn of the signature drama above. I'm not sure how it will ultimately turn out but I think you've handled it admirably – and there are a lot of folks here who will back you up – and I wanted to drop a quick note of thanks for your excellent contributions. I hope the DPAC show was enjoyable. DanCherek (talk) 02:05, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from The Signpost

[edit]

Hello. I am writing a piece in The Signpost about the recent attempts by the City of Durham to intimidate and discover the real identities of Wikipedia editors who made edits to articles about several prominent politicians. I have a few questions for you, if you don't mind replying:

  1. The Wikimedia Foundaion issued a statement to Indy Week saying that "strongly committed to protecting the privacy of editors and users on Wikimedia projects". How does this statement make you feel?
  2. What has this incident taught you about local government and/or corruption?
  3. Is there anything that has not been publicly reported thus far that you feel is an important component of this story? If so, would you be willing to provide your thoughts on what that is?

If you do not wish to provide a reply, no big deal, just please let me know.

Red-tailed hawk (nest) 20:31, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Red-tailed hawk: Thank you for reaching out, and I'd love to be able to comment for a signpost article!
1: As soon as this incident made it to the Admins Noticeboard, I was so happy to see an outpouring of support from the Wikipedia community from editors who have been around longer than I have who backed me up and reassured me that I had broken no laws to warrant my real identity to be revealed to Durham authorities. I have always valued that Wikimedia has also never succumbed to external powers- and has continued to fight for a world of free information: whether that be not to take down/severely censor their project in Russia, to campaign for those jailed editors in Saudi Arabia, or even just go against unjust decisions by local governments here in the US.
2: I have no strong opinions on this question. I feel it would be an injustice to label the city of Durham as corrupt even after all of this, since for a city so big and with so many moving parts, there is undoubtably good going on in other places, I believe in being optimistic. I would have even put it past the mayor Elaine O'Neal if she went back on her statement after I explained how I got the signature publicly, but since she doubled down on her attempt to try to "unmask" me and two other editors after without really any prior contact, I am glad she will not be running for mayor again, because I don't think how this situation was handled was right at all.
3: I don't think there is anything that I haven't said yet to the Indy Week or on the Admins Noticeboard that I wanted to. I think the closest personal information the mayor is going to get from me is my last name lol.
Thank you again for doing this, and I look forward to reading your report! I'll be here if you have anymore questions 🙂 Cheers! Johnson524 (Talk!) 21:02, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed you reverted my edit which fixed the date format in Gibson's date of birth. It had the summary "Subcat already included". Did you intend to revert this edit instead?

Clipping newspapers while using newspapers.com

Hello, @Johnson524. I have noticed a few of your articles that use WP:Newspapers.com and you should use clippings to help with the verifiability of your sources and for non-WP:TWL users to access Newspapers.com articles. Thank you, Cowboygilbert - (talk) ♥ 04:06, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cowboygilbert: Thank you for reaching out. Since I started editing Wikipedia about two years ago I've worked entirely off of a school-issued Chromebook, which had a lot of odd restrictions which prevented me from using clippings, InternetArchive, and other useful things entirely: giving me a error message saying these were unavailable if I tried to do so. I recently purchased my own laptop, so this should no longer be an issue going forward. Cheers! Johnson524 11:44, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An IP learning about tone

[edit]

Hey, I'm genuinely curious how long does it take to learn about what tone to use in talkspace? I've received similar criticism elsewhere where I failed to identify problematic tone before saving, so as you can see, I'm still learning. Me following WP:NPA at AfD evidently wasn't sufficient.

Tbh, I read NSONG 10 mins before commenting at AfD. I think I only understand 10% of P&G and Google the rest, but at least that's written down. Seems I tried too much for a succinct message at AfD that it became 3LA. I saw essays about removing fluff, but can I get some explanatory essays or something about tone in talkspace please? 142.113.140.146 (talk) 18:38, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man, you're all good now 🙂 The fact you're reaching out is awesome, and makes me wish I had some better advice 😅 Umm, if I had to say one thing it'd be that when you're in a conversation with editors who've been on the encyclopedia for awhile, mentioning policy is fine, but I wouldn't link it, especially not well known policy like WP:N, since it can come of condescending, kinda like linking one of the ten amendments to a judge (not the best example just the only one I could come up with lol). Other than that, any overly negative/condensing tone you used you've either completely reworded or striked, and imo reads perfectly now. Its something all editors have struggled with, myself included, but actively trying to learn from those mistakes and improve is the best one can strive to do. Wishing you the best from North Carolina, and cheers! Johnson524 04:41, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and one more thing, your knowledge of so much of Wikipedia's policies already is actually super impressive. In the example I listed above, I want to stress I do not consider myself to be one of the senior "editors who've been on the encyclopedia for awhile", and some of the policy you linked in the AfD I actually didn't know about! (being my first political article) It was just the tone you said it in that was off-putting at the time, which again reads 100x better now 🙂 Cheers! Johnson524 04:47, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Johannes Maximilian, I hope you are well 🙂 If you have the time, I would really appreciate it if you could explain why you denied this article? There are 15 non-YouTube/non-primary citations about the subject: 3 of which are entirely about Davydov, which should be more than enough to establish notability? I've been trying to help this article get to the main space for over a year now, and today cut half YouTube citations and other clean-up to try to get this article up to standard. Is there is way you could give me something more descriptive to work with? I've gotten the same standard 'citing sources' message three times in a row now, and I don't know what else I can do, but still really want to help this page. Cheers! Hello Johnson524! The problem with the article is that it is mostly based on unreliable sources. The subject's YouTube channel is not deemed a reliable source, neither are Daily Kos or Independent Australia. Please cite proper reliable sources. Best, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 18:25, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the quick response @Johannes Maximilian! If I could ask one more question: if I removed the remaining YouTube, four Daily Kos, and both Independent Australia citations, could you potentially take a second look at the article? There would still be eleven reliable and non-problematic citations remaining, two of which by the Kyiv Post are specifically about Davydov and his work as the most followed English-language channel on the war in Ukraine. Again, I would really appreciate it, and than you for taking the time to respond. Cheers! Johnson524 18:32, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Johannes Maximilian: Corrections have been made! I would appreciate it greatly if you could take one more look at the page if you get a chance, cheers! Johnson524 18:51, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers mate, I appreciate the work! It hurts me to say this but the draft still cites the subject's YouTube channel, which it ought not to. Best, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 22:17, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Johannes Maximilian, sorry for the delay. I was pretty conflicted about removing the last YouTube citations which I believe were uncontroversial, but have done so nonetheless. If you have a spare moment, I would appreciate it if you could give one last look at the page. It would be amazing to finally get it in the main space after one year in the draft space. Cheers! DYK for MrBeast Lab

[edit]

On 1 December 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article MrBeast Lab, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the MrBeast Lab toy line first debuted in a pop-up store in the shape of an overturned tanker truck carrying toxic waste? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/MrBeast Lab. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, MrBeast Lab), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
