GAN backlog elimination drive - 1 week to go
First off, on behalf of myself and my co-coordinator Wizardman, I would like to thank you for the efforts that you have made so far in this GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a success, and that is thanks to you. See this Signpost article about what this drive has achieved so far.
We're currently heading into the final week of the drive. At this time, if you have any GANs on review or on hold, you should be finishing off those reviews. Right now, we have more GANs on review or on hold than we do unreviewed. If you're going to start a GA review, please do so now so you can complete it by the end of the month and so that the nominator has a full 7-day window to address any concerns. See you at the finish! |

I am not aware of how that happened; I was editing another section on that page and did not get an edit conflict message. Sorry. Duke53 | Talk 23:16, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- I would love to know how that happened. Are you sure you didn't get an edit conflict notice? Were you editing a section because it doesn't show up in your edit summary? It was a bloody nightmare to fix, but I've put all the comments back where they were. Thankfully someone spotted what happened before too many more edits were made. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:22, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- I am SURE that I didn't get an edit conflict message ... I hit the 'save page' button and my comment [1] was saved. Duke53 | Talk 23:27, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
It's not a one-off - it does have to do with the inability of Wikipedia software to cope with edit conflicts. Sometimes it thinks it's coped (so you don't get the edit-conflict message), but has actually screwed the page up. Unless/until the foundation invests in software capable of doing the job properly there's not a lot we can do, except be vigilant and do our best to fix it when it happens. DuncanHill (talk) 23:29, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, Duncan. Duke, you got the wrong diff above- this is the one that caused the mess. Your next comment was fine (though it gave me an edit conflict trying to fix the damn edit conflict!). HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:33, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

'Bout time you decided to run again, count on my support.--SKATER Speak. 13:41, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- Well thank you, it would be an honour to have your support. It'll probably be ready in a day or 2. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:49, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- I see you've got your first support already. - JuneGloom07 Talk? 20:59, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- That's odd, it's not even live yet! Did you give any thought to a 3rd co-nom or are you happy? If you want to be high up, I suggest you keep a close eye on it, though I don't know exactly when it'll go up. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:14, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- And another support now, lol. I think I'll leave the noms to Fastily and Brad, they'll do a good job and I don't know how much 'HJ is awesome' will help. :P - JuneGloom07 Talk? 21:32, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- At this rate, the nominator won't make the top ten supports! I'm sure they will, and just make sure you say that on the RfA ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:50, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm in a bind here- I've got lots of thoughts- and a couple drafts- of how to word a co-nom, but so much of what I need to say depends on what Fastily covers. I'm afraid I'm in a holding pattern until I see what points he discusses. Bradjamesbrown (talk) 00:20, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I'll look forward to reading it. Strangely enough, I already have two supports and the RfA isn't even half-complete! What do you think to my answers- anything I've missed, anything I should add/remove etc? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:37, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Well, Q1 is very strong- acknowledge your weaknesses regarding CSD and tackle them head-on. Q2: this is personal preference, but I'd only mention things you had a significant hand in as your content contributions; leave out those things where your main involvement was nominating (I don't know what that would do to your ITN count, though.) Q3; Nothing wrong there, for anyone who really want sto go back to December and read the ANEW report, it's linked in RFA #1. Is not mentioning MisterWiki anywhere in these answers intentional or not- you know there will be questions about that situation. Bradjamesbrown (talk) 01:10, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- It's not intentional, but I'm not sure it really fits with the questions- I wouldn't call an acrimonious ANI thread (even one where I kept my cool in the face of assumptions of bad faith and insults) one of my "proudest" contributions, though I wouldn't call it a "conflict" because that has negative connotations and I'm not planning to use admin tools in the area, with possible exception of suppressing redirects when moving his drafts into mainspace. In one sense, it's probably best to tackle it head on, but in another, I'm tempted to wait because someone is bound to bring it up and I'd rather answer a specific question than leave myself open. What do you think? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:25, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- It's up to you, but by bringing it up, you can frame the discussion, waiting allows someone else to cast the situation in whatever light they see it in. But, you almost have brought it up- the last sentence of Q2 is viewable as a reference to that ongoing situation. Bradjamesbrown (talk) 01:42, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- OK, so how do you think I should work it in? I agree on the "first mover advantage", but I;m not show how I should bring it up. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:11, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm finished with the nomination statement. Feel free to transclude whenever you're ready. I'm confident, and hopeful that you will pass this RfA with flying colors. Best of luck to you, FASTILY (TALK) 03:25, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

I have to query this; bit bitey, for this first edit? Or maybe there is some 'back-story' I don't know about? I'm all for defending BLPs and zapping derog. stuff ASAP, but I think 'only warning' for that is a bit sharp, no? I wouldn't normally question it, but I was checking the RfA, and...well, thought I'd ask here. Chzz ► 14:32, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- I think the 4im was justified for the "avid masturbator" comment- that's not something one would write if they were trying to improve the encyclopaedia. The rest of it is just petty vandalism, and would be worthy of a level1 or 2 at most, but, imo, calling someone an "avid masturbator" could be considered libel. Of course, I welcome healthy disagreement and I'm happy to discuss it with you, but I think the 4im was justified in the circumstances. Thanks for stopping by, 14:40, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Agree. The reason we have WP:BITE is so we don't scare off constructive editors. That was not a constructive editor, that was a vandal. I think anyone messing with BLPs like that should be blocked on sight. Warnings are a privilege, not a right. Aiken ♫ 14:46, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, Aiken! I don't necessarily agree with blocking on sight, but I think a one and only warning is justified for a BLP violation like that. Thanks for your support, btw, I meant to stop by your talk page earlier. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:50, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- I think we are too lenient with blatant vandals, such as the one in this case. They were already vandalizing another article before moving onto the BLP. Testing is fine, but vandalizing is not. I think four warnings is far too many as well, I think two is plenty for testing. If someone ignores a warning more than twice, they are clearly not here to be constructive. Vandals spoil this encyclopedia, and in some cases, spoil people's lives. They deserve nothing less than a block, least of all a warning. Aiken ♫ 14:56, 24 April 2010 (UTC)Of course, I will almost always go up to the four warnings when vandal-fighting, otherwise admins refuse to block... Aiken ♫ 15:00, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Everyone deserves a second chance, but not a third chance to defame somebody like that. Maybe I'm just an optimist? That's not necessarily the case- WP:GAIV#When to report is (I think) deliberately ambiguous on the point, saying that vandals should receive "enough" warnings, but it doesn't say "must receive 4 warnings". Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:07, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- I think it means "at least one". With the nature of "anyone can edit" though, we have no idea if someone's account or IP is their first. Aiken ♫ 15:26, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

- Yep, a good, reasonable, considered answer (HJ), thanks; as you've maybe gathered, my intent in asking wasn't so much to complain, as to help decide my !vote. Thanks again, Chzz ► 14:54, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

- My head's spinning! It's only been up a few hours and I have 33 supports from a bunch of editors, including you, that I hold in very high esteem! The only thing that's really worrying me is CSD, but I'm hoping that I can head off opposition based on that by just being open and honest (hence the answer to Q4). Evidently you're happy, though, since, as I recall, CSD was part of your neutral rationale last time :). I can't quite believe it, I have almost as many supports now as I did at the close of RfA #1 and I only transcluded it a few hours ago! Measurement system of the 2010 London Marathon
Hello HJ Mitchell,
First of all, contracts on your article about the 2010 London Marathon. It is good and complete. Secondly, as you realized quite rapidly, I added the metric system in the article. I saw you switched to put the imperial system first, mentioning the UK uses miles as primary measurement. In practice you are right: the UK in fact uses miles for distances and miles per hour for speed. However, officially, the UK does use the metric system. In addition, the rest of the world (US, Liberia and Myanmar excluded) uses the metric system. Hence, could you reconsider your modification and put the metric system first.
Thank you in advance, have a good day. Xionbox (talk) 00:27, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- Hello :). Thanks for your note, and thanks for the compliments, I enjoyed writing it. In my experience, the imperial measurements tend to be more commonly used in the UK, however, since the main article- London Marathon- puts the metric measures before the imperial, I'll defer to that for consistency. AfD
Hi HJ Mitchell,
If you looked at the article for deletion discussion page for List of ice hockey players of Semitic descent, you can see that no consensus was reached and the article is no longer up for deletion. (It's listed under List_of_ice_hockey_players_of_Asian_descent, as the nominator grouped three related articles together.
So if it's okay with you, I'm going to remove that AfD tag again :D

Clegg's Religious Belief
From how he has described his religious beliefs, he sounds to me more of an agnostic than an atheist. He seems open to some kind of spiritual reality. I would be curious to hear your take on it. By the way, your edit in the "Beliefs" section reads much more cleanly than mine - good job! I am really interested to see if the Lib Dems can take out Labour and maybe even the Tories. I have a sneaking suspicion that there are a lot of voters that have never voted Lib Dem in the past for fear of wasting their vote. With the Lib Dems on 31% I am betting a lot of those same voters will vote yellow because it might count this time. I can't help but thinking that the polls are very soft on Lib Dem support. Is it actually possible that there could be a Prime Minister Clegg? Hmmm.... With this election as strange as it is, anything is possible! It will be an interesting 9 more days. Cheers mate - Take care! DaysOfFuturePassed (talk) 00:59, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting. The problem with that, especially with Clegg being a living person is that either agnostic or atheist would require sourcing beyond shadow of a doubt- ie something along the lines of him giving an interview and pronouncing "I believe in god/I'm an agnostic/I'm an atheist" etc, rather like we handle sexuality. The main reason I reverted it though was the tone. I'm sure it wasn't supposed to sound like that, but we must avoid any appearance of judging him based on his religious beliefs (or lack thereof) which means we have to be very careful with our words.
- I'd love to see him become PM, but it's sadly unlikely, though we can hope for a hung parliament! Anyway, I hope that helps and feel free to raise any queries here or on Talk:Nick Clegg. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:12, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Give me a moment...
and I'll have some content for you at User talk:HJ Mitchell/gaffe transwiki... When you're done, let me know and I'll re-delete. — Scientizzle 17:28, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- Much obliged, thank you :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:29, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

- I just checked out [2]...I guess the transwiki is more complicated than either of us thought? — Scientizzle 17:46, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- Follow-up: Wikipedia:Wikinews states
I guess I'll go ahead and delete the userified content now... Thanks for trying! — Scientizzle 17:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)As noted at Wikipedia:Template messages/Sister projects#Wikinews, "Moving pages to Wikinews is not possible, for legal reasons. Copying material to Wikinews would relicense it under the CC-By license, which is incompatible with CC-By-SA and GFDL. However Wikinews articles can be moved to Wikipedia."
- That was the conclusion I came to on WN. It was worth a shot. Thanks for your help. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:51, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

- puts on best Monty Burns impression* Eeeeexcellent! I shall check it in a moment, I'm just prettifying my userpage (I think it lacks colour atm). I have a bot that archive it now- this page just gets too long too quickly to archive manually, but it fucked up my Roman numeral archiving system. :( Thanks for the congrats. It was a hard slog, but I'm glad it's done. I might have a look at her discogrpahy with a view to getting it up to FL- it's not too bad atm, but it's almost completely unsourced and it'll need a serious copyedit. - Well it would be nice if you could find some material from cast/crew etc about the end of the series, but I just feel that the article as it is seems to mention that it's the last ever as an afterthought- for example, the lead says it's the last in the current series, but doesn't make it clear that it's the last ever episode. Any help? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:09, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- I haven't forgotten about Hello Goodbye, just had a few distractions today. Made my first trips to both AN and ANI today, AN wasn't for anything interesting, just requesting some help with the AIV backlog. ANI was to see if there is anything to be done about a serial sockpuppeteer. Anything interesting happen to you today? - JuneGloom07 Talk? 21:54, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- Nothing "interesting", I've just been loitering. I spent a bit of time on the new account log earlier (I was bored and there was nothing interesting on my watchlist!) and I've been working on 2010 London Marathon- some gent has uploaded a load of photos to Flickr and freely licensed them all so I'm having a field day uploading them to Commons, trouble is there's about 20,000 of them! I also stumbled across a vandal creating a page with nothing but "4 and 6" copied and pasted a few hundred times and had to get a checkuser after he did it with three different accounts! I've been to AIV a few times today (the joy of having a watchlist like mine!) and it seemed busy- I saw your AN note and left another one. I think Xeno cleared it. Did you manage to find any stuff on the end of the series? It would go quite nicely in the article. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:04, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm still having trouble finding anymore info about the episode, to be honest I don't think many people care about it. Like one of the critics said "Ugly Betty attempted to earn a place in TV history, but I fear their last episode will be quickly forgotten by the fans". It was no where near to getting as much press (or viewers) as the Friends finale. - JuneGloom07 Talk? 23:17, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- Sling that in then unless you think it's too negative-a-note on which to end it. I'll probably pass it in the morning anyway. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:22, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Oliver O'Grady
Hi. I was the one who updated the Oliver O'Grady page to include his current whereabouts. I didn't know it was a violation of the BLP policy to do that. Sorry. It most certainly wasn't vandalism - he is definitely in Dublin, and definitely did leave after the airing of the documentary (to assume coincidence, when evidence to the contrary exists, is a bit silly, but I understand that BLPs are a different breed). I thought the page could do with that information, as currently it is clearly incorrect. 217.91.140.27 (talk) 16:18, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- Well as you've probably seen your edit was tagged with "possible BLP issue or vandalism". I don't think the edit was vandalism but it could be considered a BLP violation and we need to be especially careful with information on living people. I hope that helps :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:28, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- I did see that, but I don't know how it could violate the BLP, as it's not accusing him of anything, other than simply clearing up his location. The linked article has photos of him where they say he is. Again, sorry if I did anything wrong :) 217.91.140.27 (talk) 10:53, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

BBC News GAN
Hi HJ Mitchell - I was just dropping you a message about the GA review you are conducting of BBC News. It has been over a month since there was a comment by either you or the nominator, and a ping by Wizardman has gone unanswered for over a week. As this article has been under review for over a month and a half, it's probably time to make a decision on this one :) Thanks for all of your work reviewing GAs, it's great to have dedicated reviewers! Re: Hey
I'm good how 'bout you? What you been up to? Of course, if I abandon it, and people add whatever the hell they want, the article will lose it's beautiful star, which will not happen, cause that's not how I roll. I want my work to continue being excellent and I will not allow its status to be demoted. Ooh, nice. I'll drop by later. Oh, okay ["I don't want to get into anything too heavy while my RfAs on"] I was just wondering. Nice work on the 2010 London Marathon article. Yeah, I hear that working on discographies are hard, that's why I've never attempted to work on them. Yeah, I hate the fact that people come here and do that sort of stuff. All the hard work one does and some idiot comes and just wants to trash it. Do these idiots not have anything better to do? -- ThinkBlue (Hit BLUE) 19:04, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- I was just wondering if you could review one of my nominations at GAN, but if you're busy, then forget it. Yeah, working on discographies are hard work, cause there's a lot of research to do, like finding out when the song/album charted or was released, etc. It's a shame they log in and just start vandalizing, giving us more problems. The fact that he "lost" weight eating Subway sandwiches and getting the pounds back, and people criticizing him for it. I just don't understand how people can come here, do their vandalism crap, and be proud of themselves. -- ThinkBlue (Hit BLUE) 20:10, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- "Jackie Jormp-Jomp" should be short and easy to do, and it'd be good for the elimination drive. "Floyd" is pretty long, so I wouldn't recommend doing that one. Yeah, we should block them so that they stop coming back, that's how I see it. Sure, some IPs do good, but they're really the ones who start the problem. -- ThinkBlue (Hit BLUE) 20:34, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your participation in the April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive
On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, I'd like to especially thank you for your efforts over this past month's GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a complete success, which hopefully results in more expedient good article reviews, increasing users' confidence in the good article nomination processes. Even if you made just a small contribution, it still helped contribute to the success of this drive. Here is what we have accomplished this last month in this drive.
For those who have accomplished certain objectives in the drive, awards will be coming shortly. Again, thank you for your help in the drive, and I hope you continue to help review GA nominations and overall improve the quality of articles here on Wikipedia. |

Vandalism or not ?
The suspect of vandalism is busy deleting whole paragraphs of existing articles. He actually did nothing else since his official arrival on wikipedia two months ago, and I strongly suspect he's a sockpuppet. When I restore the paragraphs, he deletes them 5 minutes afterwards. His ideological motivations are clearly exposed on his own user and talk page, he is a monomaniac "anti-assyrianist" contributor, I created and contributed to a lot of articles on many themes. Suppressing content is vandalism, or not ? That sort of people should not be allowed to stay on wikipedia, and I don't think of just a 1 or 2 days block, rather of a permanent one, given his record. --Pylambert (talk) 18:29, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- It's vandalism if it's done in bad faith. It doesn't help when the two of you take your dispute to AIV. If you must raise it somewhere, ANI would be the place to do so- AIV doesn't deal with sockpuppets, content disputes or anything else that isn't blatant vandalism. While you're here, I had a look at your contribs- no matter what the other editor has done, please be civil in your editing and your edit summaries. Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:36, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

I noticed this report on AIV when I reported an IP you just blocked. Clearly not a suitable case for AIV, but perhaps you can save us all a hassle and block anyway as an obvious sock of User:CarolineWH, per WP:DUCK. Btw, congrats on getting the mop. I see you waste no time in putting it to good use. :-) --Atlan (talk) 22:54, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but I've only had the mop for a few hours and I'm not familiar enough with the history here to be comfortable in making a block. I suggest you contact User:Tanthalas39, who blocked the original account or try ANI. Sorry, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:59, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Block of 70.77.52.188
I'm struggling to see why you have blocked User:70.77.52.188 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). I can only see this edit which certainly warrants a warning but not does amount to persistent harassment. It is only a one off, was a response to vandalism, and the IPs other recent edits are good faith. Am I missing something else. SpinningSpark 23:06, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- you confused me with the wrong IP! As for the right one, I blocked after an AIV report (this one to be precise) but if you think it's unwarranted or excessive- feel free to unblock. I'm not going to get territorial over my admin actions. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:13, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Oh yes, just did not go back far enough in that ones history, sorry to trouble you. And congrats on the mop by the way. SpinningSpark 23:19, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you and no trouble :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:20, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Ah ha, great. Thank you for the protection on Shawn White. (take it easy) Off2riorob (talk) 00:03, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- You're welcome. As I said there, do let me know if it resumes after the protection expires and I'll protect it again. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:06, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- Oh, look at you... adding stuff to ITN by yourself... -- tariqabjotu 02:21, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- I wrote the admin instructions before I got the bit. The only thing that's different is I can do it myself rather than mollycoddle another admin! Oh, and the screen's pink! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:23, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- So as not to hijack your blurb, may I suggest that you add "In thoroughbred racing," at the beginning of the sentence, and possibly lob off the "2010" in "Kentucky Derby" (while, of course, maintaining the link to the same article). -- tariqabjotu 02:31, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- Done. Can you check I haven;t screwed anything up with the image please! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:41, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- Other than misidentifying him as Omar al-Bashir, it looks okay. Maybe someone will crop it though. -- tariqabjotu 02:50, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- Schoolboy error! It's easy to know it in theory! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:51, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

It's hard to say what duration to protect this article. The current vandalism seems recent (1.5 - 2months) so I first thought of protecting for 3 months. But then I noticed several IP edits with staying power, so I figured reducing it to one month was worth a shot (hopefully, this particular batch of vandals will move on fast enough). But you got there first so it's entirely your call from here! --RegentsPark (talk) 03:17, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- I left a note for the editor who requested protection in which I said I'd review it in about a month (after all, indefinite doesn't have to mean infinite) so I'll stick to that. If you hadn't reverted yourself, I would have been quite happy with a month and wouldn't have complained. I went for indef because the vandalism was violating BLP and the article had been protected before, but (for future reference) do you think I was a little over-zealous? After all, I only got the mop a few hours ago! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:23, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- No worries. Different ways of doing things is what makes this a better encyclopedia! Congrats on becoming an admin. --RegentsPark (talk) 12:16, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks! Congrats on becoming an admin!!! I see you are putting the tools to good use right off the bat :). I don't think indef was overzealous, as it can always be changed and because it is a BLP. I like your style - notifying people on their talk page when the article the requested protection for is protected/not protected. Every other admin has just left a note on RPP without notifying the nominating user. I dunno... it just feels more... friendly? (Can't find the word for it). Keep up the good work :).
