Sweetandproper History of Mauritius Mauritius was an uninhabitated island. Therefore it was owned by it's occupiers, ie there was no indigenous people who were it's original occupiers. Therefore, once becoming an independent republic, it became the owner and self governing of it's own island. NB It did not own any other island that was owned by it's previous owners... it got Independence for itself only. The Chagos (or any other pre-owned island by the British) has absolutely nothing to do with Mauritius. Despite anything the UN may say (it must be challenged) Mauritian Independence applies to Mauritius only.
