Talk:List of books about video games
Some links that might be useful
[edit]- Google books is useful too. Jacoplane 17:34, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I put the list in alphabetical order (i guess that is how it should be listed). Also, I couldn't think of a more specific category for now, but it needed something. Thunderbrand 14:19, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Descriptions
[edit]I've added descriptions of the books to the list. Though I'm not sure we should have these in the list. What do others think? This kind of thing has been done on lists before, see eg. List of major commercial failures in computer and video gaming. Also, should there be sections besides "Design" and "History"? Jacoplane 18:19, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
- I was considering adding some more sections. How about Making of/artwork (for things such as Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar and 1000 Game Heroes) and Tips, cheats and guides (strategy guides). There would also need to be a section for books based on specific game franchises - not only novels, like those based on Halo, but also other spin-offs: in the early 90s, a huge number of Sonic the Hedgehog books were available. Where do we draw the line about what to include? --Nick R 11:43, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- I dunno. But I was also thinking of putting in the HL2 book also. Thunderbrand 20:34, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- I think that's fine, but it should be only official novels related to the series, not fan work. Jacoplane 12:46, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- 2nded. No Sonic / Midnight slash fiction. :) --Syrthiss 14:21, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- I personally think that game-based works of fiction should stay in anarticle of their own - htey're not so much about games as they are about their stories and specific characters. there's plenty that could be added to such a list if it was made separately, like the Doom novels, Street Fighter comics and the Sonic stuff already mentioned, just to give a few examples. I'm wondering if the "theory" heading should be moved to "history" rather than keeping it with design? Books like Trigger Happy and a few others seems like they belong more with history books, and some books listed under history include theoretical musings as well...So "design" as one heading and "history and theory" as another. Any thoughts? 162.83.182.218 22:44, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Sonic Books
[edit]I really don't think that the list of sonic books belongs to this article. I envisgaed this article to be about books on videogame history, culture, analysis and inside views.
I think the "books based on computer games" section really isn't relevent. Books based on computer games, and Books on computer games are different. They really should be split off into their own article, and join the Halo and Doom "novels". - Hahnchen 01:45, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree. I only added it in the interests of completism, but I could see that I was opening a pretty big can of worms. A separate article for game-based books, then? (Splinter Cell might be another one to include, notable since it was written by a former James Bond author... but probably not much else. :) And isn't there a Perfect Dark Zero tie-in due soon?) --Nick R 10:54, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- So what do you think? List of books based on computer and video games? Sounds alright to me. - Hahnchen 17:44, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, I added the Halo books without reading this. Books on and books based on are two rather different things so I think they should be seperate. I've been trying to rack my brains to think of more... I know there's something really obvious that I can't think of. But I digress. --Sum0 21:54, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Fine with me. --Syrthiss 22:03, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- I think this is a good idea. I've added the split template, but as far as I'm concerned this section can be split off. Jacoplane 22:04, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Edge article on game books
[edit]The new issue of Edge (Christmas 2005) includes a massive list of books on videogames (featuring titles in our three categories "design", "history" and "making of"). It would definitely be a good source of reference for this article. --Nick R 10:54, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Maybe you could scan the article, and then mail a copy to some people who are working on the article. Don't post it online, that would be a copyright violation i think. Or I could just buy the magazine. Is this magazine the same in Europe/US? Jacoplane 19:27, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Even simply scanning it and emailing it around would be a copyright violation, and I wouldn't do it... well, not for something that's still on sale anyway. :) I can't copy it up myself at the moment because I'm using university PCs and don't have the issue with me, but when I go home in a couple of weeks I'll try and get most of the list added then.--Nick R 19:46, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Article up for deletion
[edit]An article I created as part of this list, Andrew Rollings and Ernest Adams on Game Design, is up for deletion. Please vote for whether you'd like to see it kept or deleted. Jacoplane 21:38, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
New Sections
[edit]Would it be ok or appropriate to add a new section titled something like Effects on People and Society? I thought Seymour Papert's book The Connected Family could be added to such a category. Thoughts? --Masks One 22:46, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Bad ISBN
[edit]Because it is causing a Checkwiki error #72: "ISBN-10 with wrong checksum", I removed the ISBN from the entry:
The Art of Gaming and Cloning
(ISBN 1-69999-353-2 Parameter error in {{ISBN}}: checksum) by Brandy Manda. This book is part of the Skills to Go Series.
I have tried unsuccessfully to locate the correct ISBN on the Internet. No relevant google hits on the title or author except for this article. Knife-in-the-drawer (talk) 11:36, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
