Requested move 18 November 2024
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. This discussion was extremely messy, what with several comments being copied from RM/TR and a lot of confusion over the grammar/conjugation of the term "Kannada". It seems that the current title is grammatically incorrect, but participants did not agree on the best correct title. There was also considerable debate over which title is more CONSISTENT with no clear result. The only argument that actually looked at sources (the gold standard of all Wikipedia arguments) was in favor of the move. I see this as a weak consensus to move, but any editor may open a new requested move if they believe there is a better alternative, ideally listing several alternative titles and a more thorough nominating rationale. Flag of Kannada → Kannada flag – WP:CONSISTENT for ethnic flags like Ainu flag. — Hemant Dabral (📞 • ✒) 11:25, 17 November 2024 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). 2pou (talk) 18:17, 18 November 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. - This is an unofficial cultural flag of both Kannada language, ethnic Kannada people (Kannadigas), also Karanataka state, therefore common name for all three is Kannada not Kannadiga. — Hemant Dabral (📞 • ✒) 21:30, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

- "Flag of X" is, by far, the most common title format for flags of any type, including ethnic groups and indigenous peoples: Category:Ethnic flags, Category:Flags of indigenous peoples RachelTensions (talk) 11:45, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- People are called Kannadigas not Kannadas, Kannada is a term for the language spoken by the people. "Flag of Kannada" gives an ambiguous meaning, whether it is referred to the language or the people. Therefore I suggest it to be moved to "Kannada flag" or "Kannadiga flag". — Hemant Dabral (📞 • ✒) 13:03, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- In that case then "Flag of the Kannadigas" or "Flag of the Kannadiga people" may be a more appropriate title that follows established naming convention. RachelTensions (talk) 22:44, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

- Wasn't this at RMTR just a few weeks ago where it was also contested? Hemant Dabral; please open a full RM if you want to continue with the move proposal. You can do this by using the "discuss" button in your request. Sennecaster (Chat) 00:11, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

- @Hemant Dabral, Chaotic Enby, RachelTensions, and Sennecaster: Courtesy ping regarding opened discussion on queried technical request, noting the above appear to be more queries than full contestations. -2pou (talk) 18:20, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

- This is not a country or state flag, but an ethnic flag. Ethnic flags are usually named "X Flag" not the "Flag of X". — Hemant Dabral (📞 • ✒) 01:02, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
Ethnic flags are usually named "X Flag" not the "Flag of X".
According to what? Look through all the articles at Category:Ethnic flags and Category:Flags of indigenous peoples, you'll see that "Flag of X" is by far the most consistent naming convention used for ethnic flags. At Category:Ethnic flags, there are zero articles using the "X Flag" naming scheme, and Category:Flags of indigenous peoples has only nine articles that use "X Flag" out of the 113 articles in the category. RachelTensions (talk) 01:17, 8 December 2024 (UTC)- Take a look at Ainu flag, also that's not even an official flag of the state of Karnataka or Kannada people. Most unofficial flags are named in "X flag" manner. — Hemant Dabral (📞 • ✒) 13:59, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
Most unofficial flags are named in "X flag" manner.
again, according to what? At Category:Unofficial flags, less than half of articles use “X Flag”, far from “most”. RachelTensions (talk) 17:12, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

- Support. I don't really buy the consistency argument, but there's no getting around the fact that it's called the Kannada flag in sources (a quick ProQuest search gets 671 results for "Kannada flag" vs. 10 or fewer results for "flag of Kannada"). And "flag of Kannada" doesn't really even make sense grammatically—it would be like saying "flag of French". The other descriptors suggested here would also be an improvement, but I do think the proposed title is the common name. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 08:20, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
