Hoàng Xuân Sính

I created a new article yesterday Hoàng Xuân Sính on a famous Vietnamese mathematician. But some of the sources I found were in Vietnamese, a language I don't read. Would it be possible for someone who does read Vietnamese to check the sources linked from the article and make sure they're not being misrepresented? Thanks. Also, of course, any other improvements to the article would be welcome. I note that the school she founded, Thang Long University, also doesn't have an article, and might be worth writing one. —David Eppstein (talk) 06:24, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

I'd like to know what his userpage says. I'm not expecting anything terrible because his talk page shows that he is liked and a good editor.

Also, there are a bunch of audio files here that he uploaded. I'd like to know what they are and which Hainan-related category they should go into. Culture of Hainan? Geography of Hainan?

This is a list of all such files from his uploads at enwp and the ones referred to above from commons:

Maybe somebody could add a description. Many thanks, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:28, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

It's a presumably satirical warning not to contact with the "reactionary monkey", by order of the communist party and the Wikipedia "public security" forces. The audio files that he uploaded sound like Vietnamese pronunciation of those words, so they seem to have been miscategorized in the Hainan categories. DHN (talk) 01:28, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I'll remove them from the commons cat. Cheers, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:20, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Date problem on end of Au Lac and rise of Nam Viet

I was reading through Keith Weller Taylor's The Birth of Vietnam, which is probably the most cited reference for our articles on ancient Vietnam. He mentioned that Trieu Da (Zhao Tuo) did not conquer Au Lac until 179 BC. And yet a bunch of templates and articles say that Au Lac's final year was 207 BC. I couldn't find a reputable reference to support the 207 BC year; the citations that exist for that year (as I was auditing them) are self-published web pages or books that aren't dedicated to Vietnamese archaeology (like travel guides). Even Thich Nhat Hanh's Master Tang Hôi: First Zen Teacher in Vietnam and China supports the 179 BC year. Twenty-eight years is not an insignificant difference. I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing an important reference that supports the 207 BC year. I will give this topic some time to simmer before I begin a massive correction. yellowtailshark (talk) 03:07, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:28, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

How to cite UBND addresses, and how to get rid of statoid?

Hey, not sure where to ask.

I decided to improve articles about Vietnam on Wikipedia.

I have noticed there are lots of weird information about Vietnam districts from statoids.com website.

I am now editing Kiên Hải District, and I see there is this tidbit: The district capital lies at Bai Nha.[1], and that leads to http://www.statoids.com/yvn.html.

The thing is, there is no such thing. There is no such thing as "Bai Nha" and it's not a capital of Kiên Hải District.

You can look at UBND page of Kiên Hải District that's linked, there is address there. But that doesn't really "disprove" the link. (I know it's not true since I have been there, and you can use Google Maps to see there is no such thing as "Bai Nha", but that's "original research".) What to do? --- Running 10:30, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Oh, he means vi:Lại Sơn main beach, where there is center of the island, but not the center of the whole district. So it's actually wrong. I will use the UBND website as a citation I guess???? --- Running 10:36, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Han tu names

Is there any discussion to refer to? I know it's accepted that it is inappropriate but Model Seeder (talk · contribs) keeps adding this to 21st century celebrities Bumbubookworm (talk) 11:29, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

Hantu is not used in usual writing but it’s still used in temples, relics,... Most of Vietnamese name their children by hanviet, and the writing system which indicates those names is hantu, you know? A word written in chuquocngu may have a lot of way of writing in hantu. Adding hantus helps us to realise the meaning of each word and avoid confusion between words. For examples, my name is Minh (明) which means bright, not Minh (冥) which means dark, my sister’s name is Quỳnh (瓊) which actually means a jade or something beautiful, not Quỳnh (惸) which means solitary, do you understand, @Bumbubookworm:? Although chuquocngu is de facto written by most of Vietnamese people, IT HAS NEVER BEEN OFFICIAL OBLIGATORY WRITING SYSTEM IN VIETNAM. Read this article in Vietnamese version of Wikipedia: https://vi.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%E1%BB%AF_vi%E1%BA%BFt_ti%E1%BA%BFng_Vi%E1%BB%87t It says: “ Có ba loại văn tự chính thức được dùng để ghi chép tiếng Việt là chữ Hán, chữ Nôm và chữ Quốc ngữ.” Translation: “There are three official writing system of Vietnamese language, they are chữ Hán, chữ Nôm and chữ Quốc ngữ.” You know nothing about Vietnamese writing system! Our names are actually từ Hán Việt and we can use hantus to make names’ meaning not confusing and ambiguous whether we want. Model Seeder (talk) 14:43, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

Need notability assessment and attention

Page possibly written by someone with a WP:COI: Sai Gon Joint Stock Commercial Bank.

Please put a note on the talk page indicating if this is really a notable topic. If it is, consider translating text from the Vietnamese-language Wikipedia's version or improving it in other ways. The page was moved to Draft:Sai Gon Joint Stock Commercial Bank in early December by MrsSnoozyTurtle but multiple editors who appear to have conflicts of interest are still "pushing" for its acceptance. Some help from someone with no ties to this bank would be useful.
Whether you can help or not right now, please put these pages on your watchlist, as I expect they will become "spam-magnets" once one of them is created: Sai Gon Joint Stock Commercial Bank and Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:39, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

I might be able to pitch in. All 73 of them, huh? dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 11:55, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Unless someone sees a reason to skip some. I've done a bunch, and collected a bunch and asked via WP:RMTR. Move of the work is in the editing, not the moving, since you have to pretty much look at every instance of "Province" for likely downcasing. Dicklyon (talk) 17:42, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
I've done most in Category:Former provinces of Vietnam, including case fix edits with help from JWB. Just noticed more at Category:Provinces of South Vietnam, and working at Category:Provinces of Vietnam where there's a long way to go. All help welcome; I'll re-focus on the old South Vietnam ones for now. Dicklyon (talk) 22:54, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
OK, I pretty much did all the editting (not all the templates, but basic article and cat fixes), and moved the ones without redirects in the way. Still need to collect the long list to ask for at WP:RMTR, the ones still capped in Category:Provinces of Vietnam. Want to help with that? Or help with moving cats and templates, editing templates (in Category:Vietnam subdivision templates), etc. I've done about 500 edits today, getting tired. Dicklyon (talk) 03:33, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
Huh, I thought I had permission to move categories but apparently I don't. I'll have to look through the workload and see what I can do, then. :/ dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 02:32, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

I just sumitted the WP:RMTR request for the rest of the articles in Category:Provinces of Vietnam; fixing cats is out of my scope. Templates in Category:Vietnam subdivision templates I edited but mostly didn't move/rename, since the names don't show up in articles; that's a job that could use help, but isn't critical. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

That probably was cryptic... why do we care about that? This RM involves about 50 state funeral articles, including at least one that is related to this WP. - UtherSRG (talk) 12:14, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Requested move at Talk:The Buddha

The page which had been Gautama Buddha was unsuccessfully proposed for a change to Siddhartha Gautama, then successfully changed to The Buddha, and is now being proposed for a change to Buddha. Proposed for deletion: Hue people

This article has been proposed for deletion with the following explanation:

  • "Inability to verify: while Hué exists as a city, I cannot find the people referred to as the Hue."

If you agree with this, you can add a prod2 template along with any comments.

If you disagree, just remove the prod along with an edit summary or comment at Talk:Hue people and let the proposer, C.Fred know.

People by province in Vietnam

There's a significant consistency problem in Category:People by province in Vietnam, which I need to bring to this project's attention: namely, about half of them are named as capital-P Province, while the other half are named as lowercase-p province. This, further, has now had the side-effect of causing the redundant creation of duplicate categories at one format for provinces that already had a category at the other format, which is obviously not productive or desirable.

I don't have the knowledge of Vietnamese project conventions to know which format should be preferred, but one way or the other, these need to all follow the same format, with the word "province" either capitalized or not capitalized across the board, and we absolutely can't leave some at one format and some at the other. I should note that there does seem to have been some scattershot speedying of some of these categories from capital-P to lowercase-p in the past, but there was a clear failure to be consistent about it.

So somebody associated with this project needs to clean up whichever set of those categories is incorrectly named according to your preferred convention, so that the creation of duplicate categories doesn't happen again. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 19:54, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Vietnam:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.

Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and proceed to further rounds. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.

Vietnam is listed as a developing country for the purposes of this contest, so articles related to it are eligible to be submitted to the contest. I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!

Append your name to the DCWC signup page today!
