Dear Zanhe, I noticed that IATA just added a new airport, namely Chifeng Ar Horqin Airport (IATA: AEQ) (see https://www.iata.org/publications/Pages/code-search.aspx), but I cannot find any reference on Wikipedia about it. You could maybe help me to find some reference on the Chinese net, so that we can then create the corresponding Wikipedia page? The coordinates should be around 43°52′14″N 120°09′34″E / 43.87042°N 120.15958°E / 43.87042; 120.15958, but I cannot find any visible hint of an airport around there (both on Bing Maps and Google Maps). I have created an entry in Geonames, but I have no clue where that airport may be located. Any help would be welcome! -- Denis.arnaud (talk) 09:50, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Denis.arnaud: It's a new airport scheduled to be opening soon, mainly for general aviation at least initially. I'll create a stub shortly. -Zanhe (talk) 09:39, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! -- Denis.arnaud (talk) 09:44, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Denis.arnaud: I've created the article. While researching the airport, I found out there's another recently opened airport that I missed: Xinbarag Youqi Baogede Airport (IATA: XRQ). -Zanhe (talk) 19:59, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! At the time, I already created an entry in Geonames for that airport, but the location of that latter may be wrong as well -- Denis.arnaud (talk) 18:20, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Adamdaley: You're right, you didn't remove "Royalty", just moved its position. However, you did change military and politician priority to "low", which is ridiculous given that he was the person who united and ruled China for the first time in history, and he achieved it using military force. I've now fixed it. -Zanhe (talk) 00:15, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Qilu culture

[edit]

I noticed, when reviewing your article for DYK, that An Zuozhang was an expert on Qilu (Shangdong) culture. Google tells me that Shangdong is promoting Qilu culture, but the only place I found information about it in English was the website of a metal products company. If you feel like a new topic for a Wikipedia article..... HouseOfChange (talk) 03:51, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@HouseOfChange: Yeah, Qilu is a literary name for Shandong, originating from the ancient states of Qi and Lu. There are a ton of historical and cultural topics that need to be written about China. I've been to Shandong twice and seen many archaeological and historic sites there, most of which do not have English articles. Currently I'm focused on writing biographies of prominent modern people, but I do plan to eventually return to writing more about history and archaeology, which are my true interests. -Zanhe (talk) 05:06, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yu Baofa - primary sources & COI

[edit]

Hi Zanhe, I'm the editor of Dr Yu Wikipedia page, I would like to discuss with you on how to make improve the page so that I can improve myself in Wikipedia. I read primary sources wiki page and I think most of the references sources from Dr Yu are online & offline journals. I believe those journals are considered as reliable sources?

How to improve the article so that the article is COI? I'm not a paid editor and I just helping to create this page when I reading articles about oncology cancer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Williamsyee (talkcontribs) 02:28, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Williamsyee: Thanks for creating Yu Baofa, but many of the sources are authored by himself or by companies connected to him. Please replace them with reliable third-party sources if possible. I'm not saying you're a paid author, but you do seem to have a close connection with Yu Baofa. -Zanhe (talk) 06:51, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanhe: Thank you for clarification, I will continue to look for reliable third-party sources and update whenever possible. I don't have a close connection with Dr Yu :) Williamsyee (talk) 11:51, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"A link to a non-existent article (a "red link") should only be included on a disambiguation page" And that page is a disambiguation page. So YOU STOP — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThainaYu (talkcontribs) 16:58, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You should do just that from the start instead of deleting everything. You can let other people try to contribute by leaving the correct information as is

Instead of trying to help each other contributing knowledge by kept adding more data. You reject other people's contributing just because it not perfect. These kind of useless behaviour you have done is making wikipedia an annoying place for contribution and it make wikipedia become toxic place. Please stop. When you see a data that just not complete you should just try to add more of it instead of remove it — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThainaYu (talkcontribs) 17:56, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@ThainaYu: Do you realize how many people try to abuse Wikipedia for self-promotion or spamming purposes, and how much time experienced editors have to spend fighting them? If you want to add something to Wikipedia, it's your responsibility to prove it's notable. See WP:BURDEN. -Zanhe (talk) 18:10, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And your behaviour on this is counterproductive. With your policy now you don't fight spamming or selfpromoting. You fight people who just want to start contributing bit by bits. And if you can't distinguish then it was a problem of your policy that it don't work. On the other hand there could be spamming or selfpromoting if they just write it carefully and follow your policy. Tech startup and hoax could insert their misinformation in any related page. While I am putting a real artist that could be search from google but missing in wikipedia are being rejected

I don't have much ability to write things. But I know many things and want to keep relation of knowledges so I try to make an little edit where it should. But your policy ruin it all. And while it might trivial, it's real and should be there. And it should not be your responsible to delete it if you don't know what it really is and you don't try to know about it

Seriously, you can google "Fugu music" from youtube and I'm sure he will come up. If there is anyone should have a page "Fugu_(musician)" it should be him — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThainaYu (talkcontribs) 19:16, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

But YouTube is not a reliable source and YouTube videos do not establish notability. Look, I've spent enough of my precious time trying to educate you about Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and am not going to respond further. You've been around since 2012; it's about time you start reading the helpful documents. -Zanhe (talk) 19:30, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You could just look at the history and upload date and comment and other statistics for reliability. I said this not just because it exist a link in youtube. And people interaction is real. It is the actual history. A song from a musician that has been on youtube for 12 years with 100k view is real and should be accounted

What I say here is, if you don't really know what it is. It never be productive to delete it. You could just ask for citation or marking, it must be a reason that wikipedia create a "too short" banner, so you just put it when you see something too short, not delete it

Look, I've spent enough of my precious time trying to educate you about Wikipedia feature

If you really would not respond further you better keep your words. I have seen too much people never keep their words and always try to "educate" other people. In short stop messing with my editing and take your precious time contribute on wikipedia, not destroy the knowledge. Stop being wiki Nazi — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThainaYu (talkcontribs) 06:38, 9 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Odd inconsistencies

[edit]

As I can't really ask in the help desk or the village pump I thought you might know these things, I noticed that the article "Vietnamese people" is exclusively about us Kinh people and excludes other ethnic groups while I can't find a WP:COMMONNAME rationale for this. While the articles "Han Chinese" and "Chinese people" are different. Also both articles include numbers for the Netherlands and while the Han article uses numbers by the Taiwanese government which tracks Han numbers overseas the Vietnamese people (Kinh) article uses the CBS (and as I can read Dutch I know that) it doesn't use ethnic groups but nationalities, a Gin from China would be "Chinese" while a Hoa from Vietnam from be "Vietnamese". So how can such major inconsistencies come about across articles about similar topics? (a major ethnic group contrasted with minorities within the same state). --Donald Trung (talk) 08:24, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Donald Trung: Inconsistency is common on Wikipedia, especially for non-Western topics that do not attract many experienced editors. What content each article covers is largely determined by its main author(s). A word like "Vietnamese" can have different definitions in different contexts. It could be narrowly defined on an ethnic basis as the Kinh people, wherever they live; or it could be broadly defined on a citizenship basis, which includes the dozens of non-Kinh peoples native to modern Vietnam. One option is to have two articles like Han Chinese and Chinese people, with the current Vietnamese people renamed to Kinh people; another is to expand Vietnamese people to include coverage of minority groups native to Vietnam. -Zanhe (talk) 20:12, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"张雨"?

[edit]

Hi Zanhe.
I've just deleted a draftspace article of this name:

"09:12, May 1, 2019 Shirt58 (talk | contribs | block) deleted page Draft:张雨 (There was a Chinese poet of this name (张雨 1277-1348) but that's not what this draft is about. Multiple reasons: speedy deletion criteria G1, G13. To retrieve this draft article, see WP:REFUND/G13)". I can see there has been no English language article Zhang Yu (poet).

There is a zh.wikipedia article about this person, but my Chinese is very limited and I can't find anything in English in reliable sources.
For people watching: there is a disambiguation page Zhang Yu - the "Yu" may be a number of hanzi, each with different tones in Mandarin aka Standard Chinese.
Your thoughts about this? Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 09:56, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Shirt58: The zh-wiki article is about the Yuan dynasty poet. I googled the Chinese name "张雨" but couldn't find any notable figure with that name other than the poet. If the draft is about someone else, then he's probably not notable (although I cant be completely certain without seeing the draft). -Zanhe (talk) 18:52, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have emailed you the content of the deleted draft. Certainly wasn't about the poet. Before I got the admin buttons (spoiler alert: ain't any buttons, you just get extra drop-down menus) and was re-creating deleted articles there was a pop-up message that said "this page has previously been deleted, please contact the deleting administrator" or something along those lines. So yeah, go ahead and create the article Zhang Yu (poet) (traditional 張雨) (simplified 张雨). I would swoop on creating this article like the seagulls on St Kilda Beach eating the hot chips left behind by picnickers if I could find references in English. Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 10:24, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Shirt58: Thanks for the email. The draft is just gibberish in Chinese, probably created by some bored kid with the same name. Unfortunately there aren't too many online Chinese sources about the poet either. His Baidu article cites a number of books and journal articles, but none of them are available online. -Zanhe (talk) 18:20, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Zhang Yiming

[edit]

On 2 May 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Zhang Yiming, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that six years after Zhang Yiming founded ByteDance, it surpassed Uber to become the most valuable startup company in the world? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Zhang Yiming. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Zhang Yiming), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

— Maile (talk) 00:02, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Zanhe! I saw that you'd added the Chinese name to this article, thank you! I am trying to figure out how to refer to her -- many of the articles I am reading refer to her as Zhang, is that correct? --valereee (talk) 11:30, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Valereee: Thanks for creating the article! Yes, her surname is Zhang, and the article should probably be named as Zhang Dongju using the native name order per WP:ZHNAME. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 18:08, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Zanhe, may not actually matter as it's been tagged for notability, but if it survives: so move to Zhang Dongju, with a redirect from Dongju Zhang...aieee, just the kind of thing that I'm liable to break, lol...thanks so much! --valereee (talk) 18:13, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, you've done great work on this article, it looks so much better! Thanks for your interest in it. This is my favorite part of Wikipedia. --valereee (talk) 09:15, 3 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Valereee: Archaeology and history are my favourite areas too, although I also spend a lot of time writing about other sciences and politics. Last time something so exciting happened was Shangchen from last year. Let's hope discoveries like these will keep coming! -Zanhe (talk) 09:25, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Zanhe, I love archeology and history, but the "part" of Wikipedia I meant was the collaboration. :D I love it when another editor helps with an article I started, or I find an article that interests me that I can help with! --valereee (talk) 10:23, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Valereee: Yeah, it's truly awesome to collaborate with someone like you who's both competent and pleasant to work with. Occasionally I run into people who're protective of "their" articles and resentful of even clear improvements. By the way, I'm working on an article for the other main researcher Chen Fahu, and plan to nominate them together for DYK. Just to keep you posted. -Zanhe (talk) 22:26, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm so glad! I was feeling kind of bad for poor Chen; he was her advisor, and she's getting all the coverage. :) Maybe he is being generous. --valereee (talk) 01:12, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Valereee: Lol, but he's got plenty of accolades already. I think she deserves the glory as she led the excavation and probably spent months in the dark cave while he was sitting in his plush office in Beijing :) -Zanhe (talk) 00:39, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

[edit]

Not to distract WT:PROF, which is already too busy, but the original versions of Donna Strickland were deleted because they were plagiarized and copyright violations.[4] WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:03, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@WhatamIdoing: Yes, the 2014 version was deleted for copyvio, but the March 2018 draft was rejected for lacking independent sources, even though multiple sources from affiliated academic institutions were included. And this is what I'm arguing against at WT:PROF, the inane policy of rejecting highly reputable academic sources on the grounds of professional affiliation. -Zanhe (talk) 21:45, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Have you read User:Bradv/Strickland incident? WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:31, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just read it, and I think it's ridiculous to consider her OSA bio an unreliable source for her notability as an OSA fellow and former president. The OSA is a highly prestigious academic organization with 20,000 scientist members from all over the world. It they published false credentials about a former president, it would immediately become a huge scandal. This goes back to my original point about relaxing the independence requirement for academic sources, at least for basic facts such as academic appointments. -Zanhe (talk) 23:03, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
...but not everyone knows that OSA is "highly prestigious" (or even agrees with your opinion – some people might reserve that for even more rarefied societies), and furthermore, the notability concern isn't that we're concerned that they might tell lies, but rather that their attention might not constitute "attention from the world at large" (which is the idea of naming the thing 'notability': the world at large took notice, and not just people in your company/industry/group/religion/whatever). Nobody said that they thought the source was unreliable; they said that they didn't see evidence of notability. WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:26, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OSA presidents and fellows are considered notable per WP:NACADEMIC (#3 and #6), and her OSA bio clearly confirmed both. So the only logic behind the rejection was that the source was not independent or reliable. "Not everyone knows that OSA is highly prestigious" - an OSA recognition is considered a great honor even for a Nobel Prize winner, see NASA news. The problem is that most Wikipedians are focused on pop culture/sports/politics, which get constant coverage from commercial media trying to gain eyeballs, and have so little knowledge about academia and learned societies. Oftentimes it feels like arguing with a tree. -Zanhe (talk) 04:00, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
NACADEMIC doesn't actually say "For example, this includes OSA." To say that it's logical that it was declined for non-independent sources, we would have to assume that this editor, unlike >99% of people on Earth, somehow already knew that OSA is considered prestigious, according to whatever standard is used for that criterion. I don't think that it's logical to assume that. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:15, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
NACADEMIC does not mention Nobel Prize either, and I don't think a person who does not know what OSA is should be in the position to decide the OSA president is not notable, just as a person who's never heard of NHL should not deny the notability of a pro hockey player. Scientists have far less public visibility than athletes and entertainers, but Wikipedia recognizes that they have long-term significance to humanity, which is why we have NACADEMIC in the first place. Honestly, I don't see the point of continuing this conversation on my talk page. There is an RFC at WT:PROF, and the consensus is overwhelming. -Zanhe (talk) 04:31, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Would you be able to look at the April 3rd & March 31 contributions by Special:Contributions/108.35.217.152 to the above article? This IP has been adding huge numbers of items to lists. Today they added many fine-dining restaurants to List of casual dining restaurant chains so I took a look at their contributions history and discovered they have added a ton of stuff to various lists. I saw one of the lists was restaurants in China and thought maybe you could do a reality check to see if their additions appear helpful or not? I don't want to report for vandalism if they're just overenthusiastic, but the restaurants added to the casual dining list are definitely unhelpful. --valereee (talk) 00:51, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Valereee: The IP's edits at List of restaurants in China are mostly ok, although it was ridiculous to call the list complete. This is just one of the thousands of crappy lists we have on Wikipedia, and the IP's edits at least didn't make it even worse. -Zanhe (talk) 04:45, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
hahaha thanks, so probably well-intentioned. I'll just query on their talk, see if maybe there was some method to the madness. --valereee (talk) 10:07, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the article 'Anissa Chan'

[edit]
@Good afternoon: Secondary school principals are not generally considered notable. Is she known for anything else? -Zanhe (talk) 19:14, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Good afternoon: I did a bit more research and found that she received the Lui Che Woo Prize [5]. It appears that she is a well known educator. If you can add this and preferably other information about her contributions to the draft and I think it will be ready for publishing. -Zanhe (talk) 19:31, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for the information. --Good afternoon (talk) 02:13, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Good afternoon: Sorry, just realized I was mistaken. Her page on the Lui Che Woo Prize website actually describes her as a member of the prize selection panel, not as a recipient, see here. She does seem like a prominent educator, but I'm not sure if she's notable enough for Wikipedia. Can you add more substantial media coverage of her career and contributions? -Zanhe (talk) 05:23, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I will see what I can find. There has been news coverage on her recent post in the government about changes to the education curriculum. Does that suffice? --Good afternoon (talk) 08:52, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
She is the chairperson of the Task Force on Review of School Curriculum in Hong Kong, and she is quite vocal in these kind of matters. SCMP article --Good afternoon (talk) 09:01, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Good afternoon: The positions she's held do not by themselves meet WP:GNG. So you need to find in-depth coverage from mainstream media about her career, influence, and contributions, and add the details to the article. A stub merely listing her positions is unlikely to be sufficient. -Zanhe (talk) 19:43, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I added some details, would you mind checking? Thanks a lot. --Good afternoon (talk) 03:15, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Good afternoon: I've expanded the draft a bit and accepted it for mainspace. This is a borderline case but I think it has a decent chance of surviving AFD if someone nominates it for deletion. Happy editing! -Zanhe (talk) 06:32, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. Happy editing to you too. --Good afternoon (talk) 00:49, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Zanhe, please proceed with this at your next opportunity. It has waited long enough. Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:49, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I recently submitted the article "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Aqua_Data_Studio". Before I submitted this article, I read carefully the various online documents that describe the submission process for Wikipedia.

The article submission was rejected. I can certainly accept that in itself. You left the reason "This topic is not sufficiently notable for inclusion in Wikipedia.". Again, I can certainly accept that in itself, although I was hoping that this article would overcome the threshold. However, you left the comment "Article was previously deleted as not notable, see "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Aqua_Data_Studio".

Does this mean that you rejected this article because a different article with the same name but different content was rejected in 2010? The article that I submitted is completely different from the article that was rejected in 2010. There is no connection between the two articles except for the fact that they share the same name and refer to the same software.

If you actually made their decision based on the content of the article that I submitted rather than what happened to the other article in 2010, then I can certainly accept your decision. However, from the comment that you left, I wonder whether this may not be the case.

I am very much impressed by your contributions to Wikipedia, and I am humbled that you took the time to review my submission, regardless of the outcome.

Thanks!

Dbexpert (talk) 19:30, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dbexpert: I rejected the draft because the topic was previously determined as non-notable after an AFD discussion. The draft does not include in-depth third-party coverage to demonstrate its notability, and most of the included sources are published by the company itself and not independent. I did not base my decision on the deleted article itself, which I have no access to. If you can find reliable third-party sources that discuss the significance of the software in some depth, please add them to the draft and resubmit it. I'll be happy to reverse my judgment if there's sufficient evidence of its notability. -Zanhe (talk) 05:25, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Conjecture about a hook

[edit]

Hi, the DYK hook for the articles Xiuxiong Chen and Song Sun mentions "Yau's conjecture". Am I correct in assuming that that's the same as Yau's conjecture? Neither article links to it. Pinging Dennui, the articles' co-creator. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 06:10, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mandarax: I'm not a mathematician and don't know for sure, but it doesn't seem to be the same conjecture. Yau's conjecture is about the Riemannian manifold, not the Fano manifold, and there's also Yau's conjecture on the first eigenvalue, which is another different conjecture by Yau. -Zanhe (talk) 06:24, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad I was cautious and didn't just link it without asking. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:39, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There are many conjectures referred as "Yau's conjecture", and many of them deserve their own articles (there are very few math editors, so many important concepts don't have articles yet, not only that: the existing articles are mostly lacking content). You were right about being cautious, as these are not the same! Thanks! Dennui (talk) 13:18, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please let me know your feedback on the rejection

Thank you Raj2828 (talk) 10:01, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Raj2828: The submission was declined because it's not supported by enough independent reliable sources, not because the existing sources are unreliable (although some are non-independent). Also, the article reads like a directory listing and is poorly formatted. -Zanhe (talk) 19:24, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zanhe,

Thank you for your feedback. can you suggest me some article formats that I can base on ? so if i rewrite the article with better format, the article can be approved? as you said some of the sources are independent. Will that be good enough

Please advise

Thank you Raj2828 (talk) 04:17, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Raj2828: Just look at any major university article to see how it should be structured and what kind of content to include. Once enough reliable sources exist to prove its notability and the content is encyclopedic, the draft will be accepted. -Zanhe (talk) 23:40, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zanhe, I noticed you just moved Wu Jihan as per Chinese naming convention. Of course, the article is now in its correct order, however I believe that in En Wikipedia, WP:COMMONNAME breaks Chinese order as per WP:ZHNAME. He uses "Jihan Wu" as his name in Twitter, the company he is associated with used "Jihan Wu" in their English press releases. Search results show both. "Jihan Wu" has over 10x as many results - of course there is no telling if that is all in relation to the same person. I'd say, though, there is evidence western naming convention is more common for this person. pseudonym Jake Brockman talk 09:14, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jake Brockman: You're right, "Jihan Wu" is much more common per google results. We usually follow the naming convention when the difference is not big, but this is an order of magnitude. I've reverted my move. -Zanhe (talk) 09:45, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I see that recently, these female kpop artists individual pages have been resurfaced, does Momo Hirai of Twice make the cut?

[edit]

In the past few days, I noticed that, Jisoo, Lisa, Nayeon, Rose and Jeongyeon's pages have been resurrected. On the basis of Gallup Korea's popularity ranking like Jisoo of Blackpink, Momo was ranked 20th. Does she make the cut for WP:N Singer to warrant her own article? Thanks, a newbie here, sorry for asking dumb questions. T.T FakeMaknae (talk) 09:06, 2 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@FakeMaknae: Not a dumb question at all. The creation of Blackpink member pages is the result of discussions on Talk:Lisa (Thai singer) and Talk:Blackpink, and the great work by DanielleTH and others. It's my opinion that all artists in Gallup poll's top 20 idols list satisfy WP:ENTERTAINER #2, as Gallup is indisputably reliable and quantitative evidence. Momo probably does not yet meet WP:NSINGER but that's not required (see the deletion review for Harry Styles from 2013). If you're planning to write articles for Momo and others, it's important to use multiple strong sources from the very beginning (e.g. no YouTube or K-pop sites), otherwise they may still be challenged. -Zanhe (talk) 18:52, 2 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@FakeMaknae: Oh I just realized that Momo Hirai had an extensive article in 2016, but was turned into a redirect after discussions. That was before the publication of the Gallup poll, however. -Zanhe (talk) 21:46, 2 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
thank you sir for detailed explanation. So, the proper way would be to begin a split proposal to override previous decision?FakeMaknae (talk) 02:52, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@FakeMaknae: That's not necessary as it's been almost three years since the previous discussion. As long as enough new sources and info are added to establish notability (such as the Gallup poll) it should be fine. I found some in-depth coverage of Momo in English ([6] [7]), and plan to work on restoring the article (also Sana's) in the next few days, after finishing a couple other articles I've been working on. It would be great if you could search for mainstream Korean-language sources to add to them, as I don't speak Korean. -Zanhe (talk) 22:34, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
noted, thanks.FakeMaknae (talk) 08:27, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@FakeMaknae: As promised, I've restored the articles for Momo Hirai and Sana Minatozaki, and added some recent coverage from English-language media. Please expand them with Korean and/or Japanese sources. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 01:00, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

unable to submit the article

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Stringed_music(china) this is my page and I provide the references, but this an error

I would like to know what is missing and what the exact problem is. Thank you.

Lwsswlp (talk) 05:57, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Lwsswlp: Thanks for your work! I declined the submission because it lacked inline sources. I see that you've now improved the draft, but it is still not entirely sourced. Also, why do you include the flute in an article about string instruments? -Zanhe (talk) 20:05, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanhe: I just wonder which part of it should be added more sources? And Is there any way that I can change the title of my article? Cause I may miss the part 'bamboo' in my article title.(this is why I did include the flute) thanks.
@Lwsswlp: Ah, I just realized that the topic you're trying to cover is Jiangnan sizhu. As the article already exists (and is in terrible shape), you can simply overwrite most the of content with what you've written. AFC is for new articles only, and you don't need to go through the review process for improving an existing topic. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 21:12, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Lwsswlp: I just saw that DGG has approved the draft (as Stringed music in China), obviously unaware of our discussion here. @DGG:, the article should be merged into Jiangnan sizhu, which is a genre of traditional Chinese music that uses both stringed and wind instruments. -Zanhe (talk) 21:22, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanhe: No, the Jiangnan suzhu is a part of the string and wind music in China, I just did the whole things about Chinese string music in my article, therefore I think this two topics are different. And the Jiangnan sizhu is a special name just for the style of string and wind music in Jiangnan in China. Also, Jiangnan is just one of place which have better development of string music in China so I did some introductions of Jiangnan sizhu in my article, but I still think this two articles did two different introductions to two different identifications.
  • No, I do not think it should be merged. There are two altogether separate topics: a specific genre of music , that is not played exclusively on string instruments, and a type of instrument used for many genres (at least, that's the case if I do understand the subject--I'm not an expert.) DGG ( talk ) 06:06, 10 June 2019 (UTC)`[reply]
@DGG: I have no problem with having an article about Chinese stringed music, but I was really confused by Lwsswlp's shifting explanation of the draft's topic, and the reason why the flute was included in an article supposedly about stringed music. Jiangnan sizhu literally means silk/string and bamboo instruments (and music) of Jiangnan, which matches the lead sentence of the draft. Lwsswlp has now removed the flute from the article, but it is still quite confusing and lacks cohesion. -Zanhe (talk) 22:32, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mexican people of Chinese descent

[edit]

Hi Zanhe. Hope all is well! I recently wrote an article about a Mexican drug lord of Chinese descent. I figured you might be interested in it based on your update here. I don't know when, but I plan to write an article in the future about the Chinese immigrants who came to Mexico in the 1800s and kick-started Mexico's drug history by introducing opium near western Mexico. There's a lot to it, but I wonder if there's anything written in Chinese that you could help me with. Regards, MX () 23:41, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@MX: Thanks for writing the interesting article! Zhenli Ye Gon got quite a bit of attention in Chinese media, but I've never read about Alfonso Lam Liu. It's probably because the former was born in China and moved to Mexico, while the latter is Mexican-born. I may be able to help if I can find the Chinese names of those people, otherwise it's really hard to search Chinese-language sources. Interestingly, Lam Liu has a Chinese-sounding paternal surname despite having a Lebanese father. Cheers! -Zanhe (talk) 23:54, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just overhauled Wuxi. Clean and basic, if you feel like adding more to it go for it, if not no worries. Some of the major cities could really use a restart! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:27, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wade-Giles question

[edit]

Hello! Hope you are doing well. I wanted to ask you what the standard is for Wade-Giles on Wikipedia. Is/was there a historical document (like the Hanyu Pinyin Fang'an for Hanyu Pinyin) that is/was followed for passport names in Taiwan and etc other purposes to generate Wade-Giles forms? The reason I'm asking is that my edit which gave 'tih⁴' as the Wade-Giles for '棣' ([9]) was rooted in Wiktionary's choice to give 'tih⁴' as the Wade-Giles for '棣' (click 'Expand' on the drop-down box under Pronunciation on the page). Geographyinitiative (talk) 08:28, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that I am having trouble finding "Chu Tih" in google searches for the Ming Emperor of that name, while "Chu Ti" has a lot of results. Geographyinitiative (talk) 08:38, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Geographyinitiative: In Wade-Giles, [i] is represented as "i", not "ih". "ih" is only used to represent syllabic consonants, e.g., pinyin zhi would be WG chih, ri would be jih, and so on. So WG for pinyin di should be ti, not tih. Unfortunately, Wiktionary is full of errors, just like Wikipedia. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 08:39, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that sounds much more correct. Thanks. Geographyinitiative (talk) 08:40, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Moving pages for disambiguation

[edit]

Hi there! I noticed you recently moved the Liu Shiying to disambiguate the athlete from the architect. There were quite a lot of links to that target that needed changing to the new athlete title. I've fixed all the links now, but in future can you fix the links for any articles you move from a main title? There is no benefit to the reader if a page move breaks dozens of links across many articles, so if there are a bothersome number of incoming links to fix its better to leave the original article as it is and place a hatnote for the new article with the same base name. (I suppose I saw some benefit in learning a little about 20th century architecture in China, though!) Thanks! SFB 21:29, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Sillyfolkboy: Thanks for fixing the dab links! I fixed them in the navboxes I could see from the page, but didn't check other incoming links. I need to remind myself to get into the habit of using a tool like dab fix. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 22:01, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again- I'm sorry to bother you, but I wanted to let you know that local language information had been deleted from the Fuzhou page in a way that I felt was inappropriate. I have restored the information, but I want you to know about this if you are interested so that stronger measures can be taken to defend the place of the native language of the Fuzhou area as it is represented on English Wikipedia. (You may be 100% uninterested in the issue, but I wanted to bring it up just in case you were.) If you are willing, I ask you to keep an eye on the Fuzhou page for deprecation in the future. The Girona Manifesto on Linguistic Rights states: "1. Linguistic diversity is a world heritage that must be valued and protected." Geographyinitiative (talk) 19:11, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Geographyinitiative: I agree with you that linguistic heritage should be protected. Unfortunately, the problem with most Chinese varieties/dialects is that there's no widely accepted standard romanization scheme. Even Cantonese has multiple competing schemes, each with its pros and cons, and none of them ends up being the standard. Please also read WP:RIGHT WRONGS and WP:ADVOCACY. Could you take a look at Sofmap and see if you see any indications it may be notable? If you reply here, please ping me. TIA. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:32, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Piotrus: Yes, definitely notable: lots of results from Google books, including Japan Telecom Newsletter which calls it one of Japan's largest consumer electronics and online retailers, and an Economist article from 1996 (no preview) describing it as Japan's largest PC retailer with annual sales of $1 billion. BTW, sorry for the sometimes harsh language I used in the AFDs. I was just frustrated that you'd so casually nominate them for deletion and I had to spend time expanding articles that I had little interest in just to save them from deletion. -Zanhe (talk) 04:52, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We all had worse days, I am glad we can agree we both are trying to help. I used to be an inclusionist, before I realized the scope of the paid-for spam problem (see my essay WP:CORPSPAM, and long story short, many marketing companies and a horde of freelancers make it their goal to convert Wikipedia into an advertising platform). It is, of course, time consuming, to see if an entry on a company meets NCORP or not, particularly when majority of sources are in languages one does not speak, particularly when dealing with scripts that one does not recognize. I try my best with WP:BEFORE, but there's always a possibility I miss something. You mention, for example, said GBooks hits, a lot of them are travel guides, some self-published, some reliable. I'll note that we do have Wikivoyage, which can contain tourist-useful entries on otherwise non-notable business entities. The Economist is certainly a reliable source, sadly their online database is only for 1997+, and the site they claim has their older works (https://www.cengage.com) doesn't seem to let me find TE articles (well, at least in the ~2 minutes I was prepared to spend on this particular search there). The snippet view we get is not sufficient that THE covered Sofmap except of mention in passing. Google Scholar, likewise, shows quite a few hits, but they all appear to be mentions in passing. Now, in all honestly, I spend close to 10 minutes researching this, more than sufficient for WP:BEFORE, and I don't see any in-depth coverage of it. Many mentions in passing, plus TE calling it 'the biggest retailer', makes it borderline. As such, I am not going to nominate it right now, but I feel a notability tag is justified, until someone finds better sources, justifying its removal. If this tag is removed I feel there would be no other choice by an AfD trial by fire. PS. The odds are good there's some in-depth coverage in Japanese, but that is beyond my ability to confirm (and this is why deletions discussions are sorted by language, so Wikipedians with relevant skills can step in, like I do for Polish topics for example). Hope this helps you understand where I come from and my modus operandi. Also, do note I am happy to withdraw my noms when I feel my concerns have been addressed, and I don't think spending time saving such articles is a waste of time. This has to be done, sooner than later, because if we let such substub entries stay, they only encourage real spam, suggesting that you don't need references or assertions of notability to get a Wikipedia page. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:14, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Piotrus: Your definition of SIGCOV seems to be limited to "English-language sources that are available online", which is quite problematic for East Asian topics. From my experience with Chinese topics, even a passing mention in a major English publication is frequently an indication of significant coverage in Chinese-language publications, most of which are not accessible online (including almost all books and most magazines and newspapers). I'm less familiar with Japanese topics as I don't know the language, but I suspect the situation to be similar. For example, the ja-wiki article for Sofmap (ja:ソフマップ) is 15 years old and contains tons of info with dozens of sources (although some are primary). I know CORPSPAM is a huge issue and I've rejected numerous spam articles at WP:AFC, but from my experience (I've been watching User:AlexNewArtBot/ChinaSearchResult for years), it's almost non-existent for Chinese companies (although there are exceptions such as this). It's probably because their target audience does not generally read English and Wikipedia is blocked by the Chinese firewall. In fact, the main issue is the exact opposite, that people here know so little about Asia that they're unable to recognize extremely notable topics. For example, even after Pinduoduo, a Chinese e-commerce giant, went public on NASDAQ in one of the largest IPOs of 2018 (market cap $30+ billion), its draft article was rejected on AFC as unnotable, and I had to rescue the draft. -Zanhe (talk) 01:03, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly acknowledge the relevance of non-English sources, I just think that after close to ~15 years, we have to do something about those one line substubs, as their presence sends the wrong message to the readers. However, AfD is less preferable than other venues, and I will try ping you for your opinion about Chinese topics, as I gather you can read that language? (You may want to add WP:BABEL to your userpage). Feel free to ping me regarding any Polish-topics. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:13, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Piotrus: Seriously!? Do you make a habit of doing this every time an AFD doesn't go your way? AFDs aren't wars or legal trials where the winner can demand reparations, but that doesn't mean the loser can demand reparations instead. If you think a particular article is too short to merit a standalone page, just redirect it; this "I don't think it's notable because no one on en.wiki has written an article about it yet, and I'm going to hassle multiple users on their talk pages until they expand it" schtick is really inappropriate. Guizhou problem

[edit]

Hello- sorry to bother you again. The image (File:China administrative claimed included.svg) that appears on the China page has an incorrect Hanyu Pinyin form (Gùizhōu should be Guìzhōu). I don't know how to edit .svg files- do you have any idea how I can do this? Geographyinitiative (talk) 11:03, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Geographyinitiative: I'm clueless with image editing. According to file history, the pinyin diacritics were added by Thucydides411 a few years ago. I'm sure they can fix the problem. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 20:17, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New article

[edit]

Thanks for starting so many biographies. I recently started one for a Chinese-born scientist, Mian Chin. Could you take a look and possibly add a note about native names/western naming order? You have more experience writing on Chinese subjects than I do :) Thank you! Thsmi002 (talk) 11:30, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Thsmi002: Thanks for creating the article! I've searched Google and Baidu, but have been unable to find any information about her in Chinese sources. Her surname Chin is not a standard pinyin spelling, and it could be any of a number of common Chinese names, including Jin, Qin, and Chen; and it may also be her married name, which is a Western, not Chinese, custom. Without Chinese sources, it's impossible to tell what her original name is. Sorry. -Zanhe (talk) 23:36, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The sole official language of China

[edit]

I don't believe that Mandarin is the sole official language of China and am demanding proof (in as friendly a manner as I can) [10]. I invite your comments (maybe I am wrong!). Thanks Geographyinitiative (talk) 12:06, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Geographyinitiative: I'm no expert in legal matters, but this document does seem to list Putonghua as the sole official language of China (although I'm not sure if 通用语言 is the same as official language). Many minority languages are also mentioned, but they're not considered 通用. (Interestingly, I just realized the Chinese government considers both Kra–Dai and Miao–Yao as part of the Sino-Tibetan family, which is quite different from what I've learned from Western linguistics books.) -Zanhe (talk) 06:36, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The USA doesn't have a dejure official language (at the national level). [11] There should be precise, clear and authoritative English language materials translated and published by the organs of the PRC government saying something like, "Putonghua (or whatever word they use) is the official language of the entire PRC" or whatever they might say. They would probably tell us what their official language is in English language documents if they wanted us to understand things in that way. In the absence of those official documents, we are left with a nation-state that is definitely promoting Putonghua but that also uses other languages in some official business and on its currency. In my ideal world, I want Wikipedia to tell people exactly what the facts are. When there is a "blank" or lack of specific and clear facts, or if China doesn't quite conform to Western legal and political concepts, it's just silly to make suppositions and try to cram the 'square' China peg into a 'round' Western hole as it were. Geographyinitiative (talk) 06:54, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There shouldn't even be an assumption that the USA or PRC would even need to have an 'official language' or that there is something that these governments should have that is missing. Geographyinitiative (talk) 06:58, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jihyo

[edit]

Hello, I have been away from wiki for sometime but I just saw the recent deletion discussion about Jihyo. I noticed there was some talk about making a draft instead and that you tried to revamp the page, however the outcome was still delete. There has actually been a draft at Draft:Park Ji-hyo for a long time which I had to decline due to really major sourcing issues. Maybe you can continue your work there?. Regardless of the discussion about notability at this moment it would not be bad to have a good draft ready for when it is noted that she is notable enough right now or events that happen that make here notable enough according to other in the future. --Redalert2fan (talk) 08:35, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Redalert2fan: I've added the stuff I wrote to the draft. Unfortunately AFDs are often dominated by people who know little about Asian topics. Three of the delete votes are actually from people who had nominated Lu Han, Chou Tzu-yu, and Kang Daniel for deletion. They couldn't even recognize the notability of people who're household names in their respective countries! This is why Jihyo has pages on a dozen Wikipedias but not English. I'm usually pretty successful with rescuing Chinese topics from AFD as I can dig up lots of Chinese sources. This is the first time I tried to rescue a Korean article, but was hampered by my lack of language skills. I wish DanielleTH had been around: she did a great job rescuing Rosé with dozens of Korean sources. -Zanhe (talk) 05:53, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Redalert2fan: Another draft was just created (by AdmirableHyo) at Draft:Park Jihyo. As I said in the AfD, she is so popular that people will keep writing articles/drafts about her, which is a huge waste of effort. There's no way she doesn't meet WP:ENT. -Zanhe (talk) 04:22, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You know, I thought about if for quite some time and I think I can agree wit that. At first I was against every article for persons without any solo work (songs / acting etc.), and most of the time those pages had really poor references. Then you pointed out that for example black pink has a huge social media following making them notable enough, while at first I thought that alone wouldn't pass it seems that it worked out and definitely changed my opinion to not look at idols as only part of their groups, but as entertainers and socially recognized people. Then for some twice members Gallup poll was provided for notability, this alone might be a bit weak as a source for why someone needs a page, just like that everyone with a large(r) following on Instagram or YouTube doesn't need a page. However, since these girls are also part of twice, one of the most populair groups right now it did seem appropriate to me for including them. While I would generally still stray away from making a page for every idol just because they are celebrities/have some fans I do think that twice has become so populair that the last reaming 3 members can be included on Wikipedia. They are after all the only 3 members of the big 3 groups that don't have a page yet, though WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS still applies. They don't need a page because all the other members have a page, they need a page because like the other members they are notable enough. As long as as reliable sources are used (supported by WP:KO/RS) I can see that at least Jihyo is notable enough. It still might be hard to get this over since so many people seem to disagree with this, whether this is by people not understanding, being ignorant, holding a higher value or maybe they are right and we are wrong I do not feel like accepting it myself at the moment. Yes I think all the twice members can have a page, but it probably is not worth the effort until they have released solo work. I probably could write another thousand words about why why should/could accept it now or do nothing, but I'll leave it at this for now. --Redalert2fan (talk) 12:40, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Redalert2fan: Hi. Sorry to butt in but I saw you reviewed Draft:Park Jihyo. I understand that just because a group is popular, we should not create a page for each of the members. For Jihyo's case, I believe the information provided already proves her notability. The song collaboration she did for Inkigayo Music Crush is an original song that she recorded with 2 other artists, and it charted on Gaon Music Chart. This can already be counted as an activity outside of her group. She might not be on Gallup Korea, but for the monthly individual girl group ranking she is there. I put it there because I saw that it is also specificed on BP's Rose wiki page. Jihyo haven't made it to Gallup poll yet since her debut, yes. But she is already known internationally. I believe the wiki page I drafted for her has more relevant information that other member's wiki page. I have replaced my references to Soompi and AllKpop and replaced it with articles from Korean sites. As you said, she is notable enough given these information. Should we really wait for an official solo activity before we publish her page along with Mina and Chaeyoung? TWICE is known as a group who works together as 9 members and solo activities will not come in the near future for them except solo photoshoots. --AdmirableHyo (talk) 14:14, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Redalert2fan: Thanks for the thoughtful response. I went through a similar thought process as you have. I cared little about pop culture and rejected multiple drafts of K-pop stars at WP:AFC, but soon noticed that they get re-created over and over again by many different editors, which is very unusual for Asian topics. After doing some research (including consulting my own kids), I've got to realize how wildly popular these top K-pop stars are, even here in North America. Calling them not notable solely because of WP:SINGER feels like denying the notability of John Lennon in 1969, before the Beatles disbanded. This is why I tried hard to rescue the Park Ji-hyo article, which unfortunately was unsuccessful. -Zanhe (talk) 06:33, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can you consider my draft instead of the existing one? I think mine has more information. I will add more information to it such as her brand reputation rankings and her collab with Ben and En-ji and a find a source that proves it debuted on melon at #53 and in Gaon at #97. AdmirableHyo (talk) 07:07, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@AdmirableHyo: Thanks for adding the source for the Gaon chart! This is solid evidence for WP:SINGER #2. Your draft is definitely better, but we do need to keep all information on a single page. Would you mind merging the new info into the older draft at Draft:Park Ji-hyo? Also pinging JGHowes, the closing admin for the AFD, for the new evidence of Jihyo's notability. -Zanhe (talk) 06:42, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanhe: I have made the changes to Draft:Park Ji-hyo! Thank you so much for considering and helping to get things moving for this article. I hope the contents and sources I put is enough to get the article out there. Let me know if there's anything else I should add or edit. AdmirableHyo (talk) 09:05, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Zanhe, Greeting

I'm Max, I really want to know about of Chinese folk singer Liu Keyi (刘珂矣). Her songs are very amazing!! Is she famous in mainland China?... Why does not have Wikipedia article? Thanks 117.18.230.36 (talk) 16:18, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gatoclass (talk) 00:02, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of months ago I thought I would write this article (linked above) which is vital to both the military and economic history of the Qing but I don't think that I can "do it justice" at the moment, as I know that you're also very passionate about Chinese culture and Chinese history I could show you the two "main sources" I was planning on using, and you could pick it up if you'd ever be interested:

Note that this is not a uniquely Chinese thing as the French also did it until 1776 when they were defeated by the Prussians, but the way it was implemented in the Qing dynasty is rather unique and certainly worth writing about. --Donald Trung (talk) 18:01, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You can also suggest it at the WikiPtoject China, something which I would have rather done if I was allowed, because I am not sure if this topic falls within "your usual scope" and other users might find it more interesting, but Wikipedia is different from TV Tropes because it doesn't really have an "up for graps" function to invite others to improve or work on article concepts. --Donald Trung (talk) 18:06, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Donald Trung: This is an interesting and notable topic, but economic history is not an area I'm too familiar with. Why don't you just go ahead and start the article yourself? I honestly don't think there's any other regular editor who's more competent than you in economic history of Asia! -Zanhe (talk) 06:02, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Because this is mostly military history and I am not that familiar with how to find the best military sources on Chinese history, furthermore it's a combination of economics, the military, and politics, it would probably be best to propose it at the WikiProject or the portal. --Donald Trung (talk) 08:37, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Moving a Sandbox

[edit]

Is there a reason why you moved User:Ibtonline/sandbox without a redirect? Robert McClenon (talk) 21:14, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert McClenon: I moved the userspace draft submission to the draft name space, which is standard practice, and didn't leave a redirect because cross-namespace redirects are discouraged. If a redirect is indeed necessary, it can be easily created. -Zanhe (talk) 21:21, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest asking for a third opinion at the Articles for Creation talk page. I think that you have misunderstood the rule about cross-namespace redirects. Cross-namespace redirects from article namespace are discouraged. I have been moving sandboxes to draft space, which is standard practice, for years, and have only suppressed the redirect when the conditions for redirect suppression are met. Because sandboxes are sometimes reviewed in user space before being moved into draft space, redirects are normally kept. If you have any questions, please ask at the Articles for Creation talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:41, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. This is really not something I feel strongly about, and I'll leave redirects behind in the future (saves me an extra click :-). Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 21:54, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Central committee age sorts

[edit]

I think it's quite useful to be able to sort the CPC Central committee by age...spotting up-and-comers on the bottom and mandatory-2022-retirees at the top. Why call it "clutter"? 12.144.5.2 (talk) 22:11, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it's useful to have a birth year column, but the death year column is useless and occupies valuable space in an already crowded table, as all members are living except for one. Also all the years were bolded, which adds to the visual clutter. -Zanhe (talk) 22:47, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The death year column will get steadily more useful over time as the people die...as for the bolding it seemed to happen by default and I'd have to write a note in every case to reverse it,I think. To have the birth years unsortable is vexing.12.144.5.2 (talk) 23:50, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Considering that most of them are in their 50s and 60s, it will be decades before they begin to die in large numbers. And the usefulness of their eventual deaths decades after their terms are over is dubious at best. Again, I do agree with you that the birth year is useful, if the bolding can be removed. -Zanhe (talk) 01:40, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced Claims about the Voynich manuscript and Chinese

[edit]

Sorry for contacting you so frequently, but I have just now deleted a large section of material on the Voynich manuscript page which was comprised of three paragraphs and an image which were nothing but unsourced claims about alleged connections between Asiatic languages and the Voynich manuscript. Claims about Media Influence in Taiwan

[edit]

Hey, I agree with your undo, but I'd like to ask- is there a page about claims concerning Chinese media influence in Taiwan on the Mandarin Chinese or English Wikipedia? Even if it's just a page about rumors and conspiracies, I have seen a LOT of claims by the DPP about Chinese influence in Taiwanese media (and you saw the quote from Professor Yu), and I'm thinking it should be covered on English Wikipedia. Geographyinitiative (talk) 05:09, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Geographyinitiative: It'd be shocking if China (and the US) did NOT try to influence Taiwanese media. Feel free to start an article, although making it neutral would be a tall order, as so much media coverage is driven by partisan agenda. -Zanhe (talk) 05:26, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would do this, but there's no "mold" or template to build from- I guess what I'm claiming is, we might need a Chinese interference in the 2020 Taiwan elections page at some point. Tsai's LINE account sends me claims about 'jiaxinwen' on a noticeably frequent basis. Geographyinitiative (talk) 05:34, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Apples&Manzanas: Thanks for your work restoring the article! Wish you had been around during the AFD, would've saved me tons of time collecting all the evidence of her notability, which was nevertheless ignored by the majority. I've added my two cents for the SBS discussion. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 06:16, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. For whatever it's worth, I recently submitted Draft:Mina_(Japanese_singer) for publication, I saw you refused someone else's draft a long time ago. Apples&Manzanas (talk) 07:04, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Apples&Manzanas: That's great improvement from the draft I rejected, thanks! I personally think it's ready for publication, but to avoid getting potentially mired in another time-wasting AFD, pinging Redalert2fan for a second opinion. -Zanhe (talk) 09:00, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I thought about it for some time and the draft has been improved greatly with some good solid references. I think you know my personal opinion that these should have been accepted before, but I am worried about people yet again questioning the notability outside of the group. I can't give you a clear answer for now, its on the edge for me. I will say that I have seen the submission (before the ping) and purposely am avoiding accepting this one because of that, if I saw no problems I would have accepted it right away. I accepted Jihyo's page because there was a consensus on the talk that the page was ready including some of the more "generally opposed" users. Redalert2fan (talk) 19:20, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In fairness, i'd argue that Draft: Mina (Japanese singer) is at a much much higher level of quality than the old Jihyo article which got deleted. And even at that time, you both had wise words here: User_talk:Zanhe/2019#Jihyo. The criteria from Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Entertainers only requires that she "Has a large fan base or a significant "cult" following." Surely being named in the headlines of the BBC, South China Morning Post, Metro, and The Korea Times is evidence of having a large fan base or significant cult following. If you don't wish to publish, could i please request that you post the comments you just made here: Draft_talk:Mina_(Japanese_singer)#Can_we_publish?, as at least that will get the consensus ball rolling with a couple of opinions in favour of publishing and allow people to object to your opinions if they so desire. Thanks. Apples&Manzanas (talk) 20:37, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Apples&Manzanas: I posted my opinion on the talk page. Thanks again for your hard work! -Zanhe (talk) 05:11, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It's funny, im not even like a huge twice fan or anything, i just thought it was weird that they didn't all have their own articles so i thought it was worth pursuing. It just strikes me as odd that Twice members with hundreds of millions of fans don't have wikipedia articles whilst unknown musicians with tiny followings do have articles. It's hard to know why this is, but i think it's because an unknown rapper can get an interview with an english-language music magazine fairly easily -- whereas kpop artists don't/can't. I guess that Wikipedia needs more Korean language speakers to hunt for sources. Apples&Manzanas (talk) 01:51, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I almost never listen to K-pop, or any pop at all, but still know Twice quite well because they're just so big. The problem is WP:AFD is dominated by people who know virtually nothing about Asia. The people who voted to delete Jihyo were the same who had tried to delete such household names as Lu Han, Tzuyu, and Kang Daniel. -Zanhe (talk) 05:55, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Since when is Russia and the Aleutian Islands in China?

[edit]

I don't understand your additions of Aeroflot Flight 12 and China Eastern Airlines Flight 583 to the template Aviation accidents and incidents in China....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 00:37, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@WilliamJE: "In" is not always interpreted as "geographically in". Events that substantially affect a country (in these cases, flights that originate in China but crash after leaving its airspace) are often broadly considered as to be "in" that country. -Zanhe (talk) 00:47, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • THe template says in China. There are other templates all over the Aviation accidents WP for other localities. (Like that Aeroflot flight) It goes in the right locality. Long time consensus for Airport articles is crash doesn't get listed at Foo Airport just because it took off there but crashed at Fooville Airport. It goes at Fooville only....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 00:52, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@WilliamJE: Please excuse my ignorance, but can you point me to a discussion with consensus that aviation accident templates for countries are not allowed to include flights that originate in a country but crash outside its borders? -Zanhe (talk) 01:00, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I just summoned editors here. Including the template creator....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 01:02, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@WilliamJE: BTW, Air France Flight 447 is included in both "2009 in Brazil" and "2009 in France" categories even though it crashed in international waters. Same situation with Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, and many other articles involving international flights. -Zanhe (talk) 01:12, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I intended for the template to only cover crashes in Mainland China only. AF447 is a bit of an exception since it happened near but not in Brazil. As for the Aleutia n crash that clearly happened in US territory WhisperToMe (talk) 01:18, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What about Malaysia Airlines Flight 17? It was shot down over Ukraine but is included in "2014 in Malaysia" and "2014 in the Netherlands". I've seen numerous other examples; these are merely the most high-profile incidents that I recall off the top of my mind. -Zanhe (talk) 01:26, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Great question! This crash caused political events to occur in Malaysia and the Netherlands (hence "XXXX in a given country"), but the crash itself was in Ukrainian territory (the Dutch investigated it because the Ukrainians delegated it to them). Hence it would only fit "crashes in Ukraine" but it was still an event affecting people in other countries. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:47, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@WhisperToMe: I don't think a political event is required for a crash to be considered to have occurred in a country. Air France Flight 447 crashed far from France, was not a political event, but is still included in "2009 in France". This makes sense, as a plane crash normally affects the origin and destination countries far more than whatever place where it happens to go down. -Zanhe (talk) 03:25, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@WilliamJE and WhisperToMe: As this issue involves so many articles, I've started a thread at WT:AVIATION. Please feel free to join the discussion there. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 04:06, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

For your contributions to Chinese topics, particularly biographies, on DYK. I actually look forward to each article that you nominate. epicgenius (talk) 22:24, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Epicgenius: Thanks so much, and I really enjoy reviewing your articles that are of unfailingly high quality. Ironically my main interests are history and archaeology, but it pains me to see so many missing articles of notable people in the news (especially scholars and scientists). -Zanhe (talk) 23:56, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Stance on Geographic Landscape Images in Infoboxes in Chinese provinces

[edit]

Recently, I have been starting to see editors putting geographic landscape images in the infoboxes of Chinese provinces, and I have disagreed with the use of them as an image alone does not represent the province at best. In addition, many articles on provinces or states (as in U.S. states), do not have these images in their infoboxes. All I believe is that these infobox images create a mess in the article. However, people started putting these images in a few months ago, and before that, there were no geographic images in the infobox, so it is probable that it is a trend. Is this a Wikipedia guideline that I have not heard about, or is this a decision on the individual editors themselves? I am not going to WikiProject China on this issue, because I am convinced that nobody in that project is active, and that I basically see you as the main representative of China's articles in Wikipedia. (On another note, are you Shanghainese? Za(a)nhe is Shanghainese for Shanghai. Just curious.) - 祝好,Josephua(聊天) 16:17, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm travelling and only have my phone with me, so I won't be able to look into this for a while. I have family connections in multiple provinces, but Shanghai is my favourite city in China. -Zanhe (talk) 14:44, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's alright. Take the time and enjoy the winter break, you deserve it. - 祝好,Josephua(聊天) 22:55, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you are off break, what do you think about the use of images in the infoboxes of Chinese provinces? - 祝好,Josephua(聊天) 04:59, 20 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanhe:? - 祝好,Josephua(聊天) 17:40, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Josephua: Sorry about the late reply. There's been a lot of catching up to do after the end of the holidays. I'm not aware of any guidelines about this issue, but I agree with you that it's not possible to represent an entire province with a single picture (or even a collage of images), and it's better to leave photos out of infoboxes. Also, WikiProject China is not as inactive as you think. If you start an RFC, I believe a lot of people will respond. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 19:15, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Plotkinl

[edit]

Hi, in this edit you added a final "l" to Gordon Plotkin's birth name. I cannot tell: was this intentional?  — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2620:0:1003:512:162C:8BF1:5667:FE97 (talk) 19:51, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No it was caused by my fat finger. Thanks for noticing my mistake. I've now fixed it.  -Zanhe (talk) 14:49, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Articles about Chinese people

[edit]

I noticed that User:CaradhrasAiguo was deleting birth place "China" in articles about Chinese people, I don't agree with that. Articles about American people use "birthplace 'U.S.'", articles about Japanese people use "birthplace 'China'", why articles about Chinese people can only show district, city or county, province at "birthplace"? Except for Beijing and Shanghai, most foreigners don't know that Hubei or Gansu is a province of China.--Huangdan2060 (talk) 01:15, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Huangdan2060: I agree it's standard practice to mention a person's country of birth in biographical articles. @CaradhrasAiguo: could you explain why you keep removing the country of birth from biographies of Chinese people? -Zanhe (talk) 14:10, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
