The Tea Leaf - Issue Two
Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!
- Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.
- First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
- Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
- Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
- Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!
- Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.

Geonotices
Hi. I guess you're possibly away over Easter. In connection with #Geonotice for Wikimania UK 2013, I've just left a note at User talk:Deryck Chan#Geonotices querying how to proceed. Cheers. -- Trevj (talk) 10:17, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- Not sure there is much point proceeding. Thanks for pursuing it with Deryck. —Tom Morris (talk) 10:19, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- Ah. You mean not proceeding with the Wikimania stuff? -- Trevj (talk) 14:58, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- No, it's more that at this point, adding a Geonotice isn't going to really change anything about the London bid. —Tom Morris (talk) 15:04, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Request for adminship
Hello,
I've seen all the opposition to my nomination and have decided to withdraw. I guess I'm not ready yet. Then I would like to ask you a question, when do you think that I would be ready for something like this? I do have a lot of knowledge on railroads and believe that I could contribute in a good way. Anyway thank you for your advice! Cheers! (Central Data Bank (talk))
- Hi there, Centra Data Bank, I'm sorry your RfA didn't go so well. It is probably worth mentioning that, as great as your contributions to railroads have been, they are not the most important thing if you are considering being an administrator. Although administrators need to be good content contributors and understand our policies surrounding content, they also need sufficient experience in the other areas of Wikipedia (the admin areas). It is wonderful that you enjoy contributing to railroad articles - you don't need administrator rights to do this. If you are still interesting in being an administrator, I suggest you look at admin areas - that would include WP:AFD, WP:DRV, WP:PERM, WP:RPP, WP:AIV, WP:CSD, WP:NPP and others. If, after a few months of heling out around there, you are still interested you could consider applying again. If you do not really enjoy those kinds of tasks, adminship may not be for you (it is not for everyone; some of our best content contributors are not admins). If you do plan to reapply, I would suggest a 6 month wait as a minimum, maybe even 8-12. That will give you a real feel of what kind of work being an administrator would entail and give you enough experience to work in those areas effectively. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck. ItsZippy (talk • contributions) 17:39, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- I also added a heading to this section to differentiate it from the section above. Hope you don't mind.
- I haven't got much to add beyond what ItsZippy has said. I hope you don't the rapid rejection at RfA personally: if you think you can help as an admin, don't be put off. We always need help on WP:AFD: just pick a topic, and see if you can find sources for it. If you have a high tolerance for drama, consider commenting on threads on WP:ANI and WP:AN. You don't need to worry if the dramaboards aren't your cup of tea though. Just keep at it, do more maintenance work and try again in six months. You'll be fine! —Tom Morris (talk) 19:18, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

ConfirmAccount extension
Hey :). You're being contacted because you are involved in the ACC process, or participated in the original discussion in '08 about the ConfirmAccount extension. This is a note to let you know that we are seeking opinions on switching this extension on, effectively making the ACC process via the Toolserver redundant. You can read all the details here; I would be very grateful if people would indicate how they feel about the idea :). Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 13:18, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
My overall contributions so far (Important)
Hello Tom Morris, hope you are doing good :). I need to ask about a frank view/opinion on my contributions so far from all experienced users (all other users are also most welcome to comment). As i want to improve more and more day by day and help the project become more successful which i am proudly a part of. I am always truthful, i also intend to become an administrator in the future to help and serve the project better than ever and for that i need more help and support from all other users on every aspect. I had started my Wikipedia editor review Wikipedia:Editor review/TheGeneralUser almost a month ago, but only one user till now have given me feedback about my contributions. Looking forward to hearing for suggestions from you and all members of the community :). Happy Editing! TheGeneralUser (talk) 18:53, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
Your HighBeam account is ready!
Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:
- Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
- Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in Special:Preferences).
- If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
- The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
- To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
- If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to WP:HighBeam/Support, or ask User:Ocaasi. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
- A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
- HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
- Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
- When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.
Thanks for helping make Wikipedia better. Enjoy your research! Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 21:04, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

DYK for Ford's Hospital, Coventry
On 14 April 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Ford's Hospital, Coventry, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Shakespeare scholars used Ford's Hospital, Coventry (pictured) to understand Elizabethan doorways while planning the reconstruction of the Globe Theatre? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ford's Hospital, Coventry. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. Re: My Article
Dear Tom Morris
Thank you for your reply to my message to Ron Ritzman. With regard to 'sources' for the deleted article, a quick google search under my name 'Ali Paya' provides ample evidence concerning scholarly articles and books written by me in academic journals and/or published by well-known Iranian or international publishers. As suggested in my message to Ron a copy of my CV could also be provided to whoever is going to referee the case.
With regards,

Re Article in Wikipedia on Ali Paya
Dear Tom Morris
In an earlier message which I am not sure whether you have read, I thanked you for your proposal for resolving the case of the deleted entry in my name in Wikipedia. In that message I had explained that all the sources which you or any other editor who wants to restore the deleted article on me in Wikipedia is easily available by a simple Google search. I would appreciate it if you could look into this matter and let me know if any other piece of information is required which cannot be obtained through such a search. TargetProcess page deletion
Hi Tom,
I am willing to know more information about TargetProcess (software) page deletion. This product is quite popular and well known on ALM market, so I wonder why pages like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LiquidPlanner exists, but TargetProcess page was deleted.
Thank you for clarification. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mdubakov (talk • contribs) 09:00, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
- I nominated it for speedy deletion as "Unambiguous advertising or promotion." back on January 2. Another admin, User:Malik Shabazz agreed with my nomination and deleted the article. The article was created back in 2007 by a user called "Targetprocess", you have an obvious conflict of interest writing about software you've created. In addition, software requires sources to establish notability. I'm not sure the Jolt Awards count on that front, but I'm not necessarily that knowledgable about what the current standards are for inclusion in software. —Tom Morris (talk) 10:41, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
OK, I got it. What can be done to restore the article, change wordings, etc? Product is in active development actually. Again, it is easier to me to use real examples. Here is the tool http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mingle that has quite few sources, TargetProcess have even more of them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mdubakov (talk • contribs) 11:44, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
- May I refer you to Wikipedia:WikiProject Cooperation/Paid Editor Help#TargetProcess. They can probably help you better than I can. —Tom Morris (talk) 12:16, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Could you explain an edit of yours for Vlad Ţepeș (disambiguation)?
Hi there!
I would like to revert the edit made by a sockpuppet of the banned User:Iaaasi to the article. Have you any objection to it [1]?--Nmate (talk) 11:07, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- Tom, Vlad Țepeș is the precise name (with diacritics), not Vlad Tepes. Please don't listen to this guyBzg1920 (talk) 11:14, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
All I was doing yesterday with the disambiguation thing was responding to Bzg1920's page move issues at the request of another user who spotted them and asked me to handle them. I have no interest in the issue of diacritics: life is far, far too short for me to give a shit about diacritic usage on disambiguation pages. If Bzg1920 is supposed to be a sock of Iaaasi, I'd suggest taking it to WP:SPI. —Tom Morris (talk) 11:21, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- Who was that user you are referring to by "Bzg1920's page move issues at the request of another user who spotted them and asked me to handle them"?--::Nmate (talk) 11:27, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- An experienced user I trust made a request to me informally. Exactly who is of no relevance to this discussion. —Tom Morris (talk) 11:38, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, But if I would like to discuss with said experienced user, I can't ask him/her about the reasons why the disambiguation page had to be moved under a new name.--Nmate (talk) 12:00, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- No, that's still irrelevant. Bzg1920 made the decision to move the page to the version with diacritics. In the process, they were making mistakes to try and get around the fact that they were trying to move the dab page over a redirect. The user who asked me to sort it out will have nothing to add to this discussion: I simply made sure that the move was executed cleanly. Bzg1920 was going all over the place. Neither me nor the user who brought it to my attention have any view on the appropriateness of the move, I just made sure the move was done cleanly. If you wish to revert the move, I'm happy to do that too. But the issue you've raised is apparently the claim that Bzg1920 is a sock of Iaaasi. That's a much bigger concern: if it's true, we ought to block Bzg1920. But you seem to be more interested in my utterly run-of-the-mill admin housekeeping than the socking claim here. —Tom Morris (talk) 12:05, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Facebook, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page BitTorrent (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Info
Hello Tom, just out of interest - you protected the visibility level of a number of edits here which were mostly mine. Why was this? What exactly is RD3? To my knowledge these things only happen when there is offensive material and I certainly didn't think I submitted anything like that. Evlekis (Евлекис) (argue) 18:41, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
- No, you didn't do anything wrong at all. Another user posted some inflammatory material just before your comments, and because of the way MediaWiki works, admins can't surgically remove just those edits, but also have to hide edits after those. RD3 refers to the revision deletion criteria. You've done nothing wrong, just a minor bug in The Matrix: all will be straightened out shortly. —Tom Morris (talk) 18:46, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
- Oh I see the picture now, the IP made an inappropriate edit and my comment appeared when his was still visible so you had to effectively return to the earlier version. Not a problem, thanks Tom. Evlekis (Евлекис) (argue) 19:12, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
User:216.166.10.195
I received a rather bizarre, rambling message from this user on my talk page and noticed he had posted it to several others. He's been blocked by you for block evasion and is apparently a banned user, so I reverted his edits, but do you know what that message was all about? Calabe1992 17:19, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
- Probably needs a rangeblock, you blocked .161 after an edit to Soviet King's talkpage and now .163 has posted contents of a private email to the same page. (Prolly also needs revdeleting, that...) —Strange Passerby (talk • cont) 17:43, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
- For that matter, could I suggest you semiprotect his talk page to prevent similar future attacks from this IP range (or other ranges). —Strange Passerby (talk • cont) 17:44, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
Rangeblock and semi-protection both done. Now to go clean up the mess. —Tom Morris (talk) 17:48, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
- No, no, no Tom. That's not a mess, that's a breakdown. There's a boy out there in trouble (I mean troubled in his soul) and you're not helping. You're just sweeping it under the carpet (but it's all there to be peeked at if need be Tom). I don't know if you've been involved with this boy before in Wikipedia, or know who has, but you should be doing something more positive for him if you were. I have done all I'm prepared to do for him. I am truly sorry but his problems began long before he chose to involve himself with me and I can do nothing for him. 206.222.178.217 (talk) 22:12, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

I saw that you made 3 revisions hidden from my talk page and userpage. I m confused and little scared because I don't think that I posted any kind of disruptive material. Can you please tell me in brief that what was the problem actually? Regards, Yasht101 04:25, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- Don't worry Yasht101. I was dealing with a user who has been evading a block who posts a long comment about an underage editor on the talk pages of a variety of users. Said long comment includes personally identifiable information about the user: this is both disruptive and infringes on this user's privacy. You got one of these messages on your user page and quite naturally wanted to move it to your user talk page: I deleted the revisions on both your user and user talk page. Feel free to discuss; the discussion is located at the bottom of the talk page. --George Ho (talk) 08:39, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why you are asking me: I have never edited the article or commented on this issue before, nor have any interest in songs from Chinese movies from the 1930s. —Tom Morris (talk) 08:41, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
Retirement note
Even though I've retired, I just wanted to let you know that I am under an Interaction Ban against Dave1185, and he has violated it by referring to me on this : ([2]) in Chinese and I find it insulting. Soviet King : Talk or Yell 09:02, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- Is your name mentioned anywhere in that conversation, whether in English or Chinese? That's a rather absurd claim when you're not even mentioned. —Strange Passerby (talk • cont) 10:52, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- Even relying on Google Translate, it's fairly self-evident what you and Dave1185 are talking about. Even if you doubt the sincerity of Soviet King's retirement, I'd still hope Dave1185 could keep to his end of the interaction ban. —Tom Morris (talk) 10:55, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- How is it "self-evident" when he's not even mentioned at any point? Don't you think it'd be stupid of Dave to violate his interaction ban when he knows the power of Google Translate as you point out? So what makes you think it's anything to do with Soviet King? —Strange Passerby (talk • cont) 12:24, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- You don't have to mention someone by name to refer to them. When a particularly annoying person that you know in real life decides to up sticks and move abroad, you might say "Our long national nightmare is over!" And, no, you aren't naming them or mentioning them. Pragmatic linguistics aside, I asked someone who can actually read Chinese to take a look, and they tell me it's pretty damn vague. I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions on shaky evidence. Enjoy your indecipherable conversations! —Tom Morris (talk) 12:54, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

- I've seen nothing to suggest that you were, and I also haven't seen any suggestion from anyone else, that you were. However, he certainly has been harassing you, and in a very unpleasant and cowardly way. Either way, he's banned, so that's that. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:56, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Astronomy
Hello Tom. If you tag any more non-notable minor planet articles with the {{WikiProject Astronomy}} template, please could you add "|class=stub|importance=low"? That way I won't have to come through afterwards and clean up the ratings. (I.e. the noise [minor planets] is hiding the signal [new articles].) Thank you. Most of these articles are going to be converted into redirects in the near future. Regards, RJH (talk) 20:24, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Tower Block of Commons, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Stratford (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Confused
See Wikipedia:Requests_for_permissions/Rollback#User:Simeondahl. --Tomtomn00 (talk • contributions) 16:58, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- Easy. I didn't grant it when Simeondahl applied on WP:RFPERM. He subsequently asked me off-wiki and I granted it when he demonstrated that he was capable of doing anti-vandalism competently.
- Also, just a note on your non-admin observations on WP:RFPERM. The basic stuff like number of edits, history of anti-vandalism etc. are things admins are going to look up (no offence to those doing the non-admin observations, but if we blindly trust what NAOs say about this stuff, our necks are on the chopping block). The way to help at RFPERM as a non-admin is to make non-admin observations when you have something useful and new to say. If there is a legitimate concern about a user that the admin ought to be aware of, that's a really good reason to provide an non-admin observation. —Tom Morris (talk) 17:06, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

The Flying Carpet Troll
The person you locked out of 1001 nights immediately moved his attention to Magic Carpet. He (or maybe she?) operates from multiple IPs - and STILL won't engage in talk page exchange (only argument is personal abuse of me and a rack of websites - the result of googling "ARABIAN NIGHTS" and "FLYING CARPET"! I have actually examined these - some are not relevant at all (as you'd expect from a raw google - none "prove" what the troll keeps bleating. I would dearly love to ignore this obvious game player and get on with my life - but I don't see why they should get away with this sort of thing.
Appreciate your advice on where to go from here - any way I can get out without leaving these two articles (and probably a succession of others) repeatedly disrupted, if not permanently scarred?? --Soundofmusicals (talk) 14:12, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- I have added a further reference (a direct lift from an on-line edition of Burton's translation of the "Nights". Hopefully this finally silences the troll?? --Soundofmusicals (talk) 02:49, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Re- Wikipedia article on Ali Paya
Dear Tom Morris
Further to our last correspondence on 17 April, wonder whether you have had a chance to look at the issue of deletion of the entry in Wikipedia entitled 'Ali Paya'.
Kind regards,

Shiatsushi
Dear Mr Morris, thank you for posting your impressions on 10:54, 30 April 2012 (UTC) on my talk page (shiatsushi), but either you haven't understood me or I haven't explained myself very well. I don't know what you have read or assumed. WHAT I am saying is not that IRWolfie had me blocked for edit warring or that it was an unfair decision. WHAT I am saying is that he TRIED to block me (not the first time I was blocked) when I opened Cabal Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/11 April 2012/Template:Shiatsu because I disagreed with him. I believe you only need to look at the cabal I have just mentioned to see that I am telling the truth. He mentions my previous blocking as if that had anything to do with the disagreement in that PARTICULAR cabal. In fact, as anyone can see, he REFUSES to give REASONS for undoing my edits, and writes to Blade of the Northern Lights (09:39, 17 April 2012 (UTC)) trying to get me blocked when this time I am NOT edit warring. So I am problematic because I refuse to edit war this time, and ask for reasons? Or because I ask for mediation because he doesn't allow any editing that doesn't agree with him? Hi! I've unblocked User:Irelan12. It seems almost trivial to point out that, to block someone as a block evading sock puppet should require that the original account have been blocked, which it wasn't. --jpgordon::==( o ) 23:43, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Can we please get them both blocked again, then? As a quick perusal of the Talk:Dave_Winer page will confirm -- or as anyone will confirm who has worked on Dave Winer's biography, Nirelan's sole purpose on Wikipedia for the past five years has been to force his deeply prejudiced point of view on that biography. Moreover, this person has been through countless accounts and blocks, and his behaviour remains the same it has ever been. Having Nirelan out and about with two accounts in good standing is an insult to anyone who would like to get on with their lives rather than being forced to respond to his relentless antics. MarkBernstein (talk) 18:22, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
- Nirelan, Irelan12, and any of the user's other sock puppets needs to be blocked indefinitely. The administrator who blocked Nirelan in early 2007 said that the ban was indefinite for edit warring on Dave Winer under a variety of usernames: User_talk:Nirelan#Block. It turned out that the original ban was not indefinite, however, and Irelan12 got his recent block removed on this technicality. Yet Nirelan went through a whole raft of sock puppets after the original 2007 block, and Nirelan2 was blocked indefinitely, as was NickIre, which should be sufficient cause to block user:Irelan12 indefinitely. Here's a discussion from the archives that should settle the issue. ARK (talk) 21:48, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
