Recent changes

  • On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word __EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__ to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [1]
  • If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [2]
  • Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the alt= attribute. This is identical in usage to the alt= attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [3]
  • The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [4]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [5][6]
  • The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [7]

Future changes

  • In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [8]
  • Two columns of the pagelinks database table (pl_namespace and pl_title) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the new linktarget table instead (lt_namespace and lt_title). In your existing SQL queries:
    1. Replace JOIN pagelinks with JOIN linktarget and pl_ with lt_ in the ON statement
    2. Below that add JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id

Hello, I have today been amending false/unreliable information on a page and my edit was removed with the reason "take it to the talk page". Is this sufficient reason to remove an edit which had sources to back it up? --Seelers (talk) 00:33, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

@Seelers If prior discussion has occured around the subject, or if the subject is controversial, then I think that's a pretty acceptable response (see the policy page on edit-revert-discuss which is a core pillar of Wikipedia). Coming to the sources, sportskeeda, instagram and facebook are generally (read: always) avoided as sources because of their tendency to be outright wrong or unverifiable in most aspects. I think the editor is justified in reverting you and asking you to discuss the subject on a talk page where you might be able to show more reliable sources to support your edit. On CSD

In general "no longer needed" is not a WP:CSD except in your own userspace, and even then with some exceptions see WP:U1, so you should avoid using it. That does not preclude deletion by listing at XFD, it is merely a reflection of the fact that all CSD are specific and narrow, WP:!G6 is also good reading. In that one specific case WP:RDRAFT means it won't be deleted even at WP:RFD, however in general uselessness is one factor that can be considered when evaluating pages at RFD, WP:TFD, and WP:MFD, thank you. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:A165:7AFC:68F9:104D (talk) 18:22, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Namespaces are central to how CSD is organized, hence only articles can be deleted under WP:ACSD and only files under WP:FCSD etc. In this specific case the community has decided to retain draft to main redirects as a result of an WP:RFC that resulted in WP:RDRAFT, but has not chosen to do so for user to main redirects. There are also some projecttalkspace to main redirects that are retained as a legacy from when that was an allowed staging area for drafts. Recent changes

  • The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, will now correctly delete pages which were moved to another title. [11]
  • New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description.   • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 May. It will be on all wikis from 23 May (calendar). [14][15]
  • The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It will change on 22 May in some skins (Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in all other skins. The developers are also considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.

Recent changes

  • Several bugs related to the latest updates to the UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons have been fixed. For more information, see T365107 and T365119.
  • In March 2024 a new addPortlet API was added to allow gadgets to create new portlets (menus) in the skin. In certain skins this can be used to create dropdowns. Gadget developers are invited to try it and give feedback.
  • Some CSS in the Minerva skin has been removed to enable easier community configuration. Interface editors should check the rendering on mobile devices for aspects related to the classes: .collapsible, .multicol, .reflist, .coordinates, .topicon. Further details are available on replacement CSS if it is needed.

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 May. It will be on all wikis from 30 May (calendar). [17][18]
  • When you visit a wiki where you don't yet have a local account, local rules such as edit filters can sometimes prevent your account from being created. Starting this week, MediaWiki takes your global rights into account when evaluating whether you can override such local rules. [19]

@Snappyboi54 Wikipedia has some pretty strict guidelines on how non-free images like logos can be uploaded. If you don't follow them while uploading, your upload can (and will get removed). Given that you are relatively new, I would just try to get the Draft:CMF by Nothing article right. You can upload the logo later. Sohom (talk) 03:01, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Formatmatters (23:30, 25 May 2024)

Hi Sohom, I have some questions about formatting numbers. The manual of style seems adamant on using the dot as a decimal separator and comma for thousands, though the international standard says to use spaces for thousands and either of the two options for decimal separators. Is it unacceptable to write 12 345 instead of 12,345? The majority of the world uses the comma as a decimal separator and using it to separate thousands can cause confusion and tends to be less readable. And one other thing: I've seen articles using currency symbols placed before the numeric value. I am aware that this is quite common in the case of the US dollar and the sterling, as these are associated with countries that use this format. This, however, is not the case for the euro, which is always placed after the number (e.g. 2.35 €). The manual of style is fine with symbols being placed after the number in other foreign currencies, but treats the euro as in the case of dollars or pounds. Not to mention that it is simply more logical and readable for the symbol to follow after the amount. Why does Wikipedia have a problem with this or the use of space as a thousands separator? Shouldn't we adhere to international standards rather than country-specific formats, especially in the case of a de facto international language?

@Formatmatters Short answer, take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers. There are some pretty detailed guidelines surrounding how to format these numerical values that have been decided after being discussed for eons by multiple editors. I believe 12 345 is fine, I will ask you to find a citation for The majority of the world uses the comma as a decimal separator In my experience, the opposite is true (I recognize that if you've lived in european countries the format we use might seem confusing, but the rest of the world (the Americas, Asia and Oceania) uses the comma to separate digits.) The same goes for using the currency at the end of the numbers. While it might be more readable to you, having lived most of my life outside of european countries, I find the use of currency symbols at the end of numbers positively unsettling :) Sohom (talk) 03:14, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes

  • The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [25]
  • The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
  • The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the mw-reference-text class, Parsoid now also adds the reference-text class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [26]

Problems

  • There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [27]

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [28][29]
  • The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a <span class="mw-cite-backlink"> wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [30]
  • On multilingual wikis that use the <translate> system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [31]

Recent changes

  • People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [32]
  • The new Community Configuration extension is available on Test Wikipedia. This extension allows communities to customize specific features to meet their local needs. Currently only Growth features are configurable, but the extension will support other Community Configuration use cases in the future. [33][34]
  • The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [35]

Problems

  • Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [36]
  • Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [37]

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [38][39]
  • Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. Yeah that makes sense, I've gone ahead and made some modifications which should allow for the dates to be parsed correctly, you'll probably need to figure out how unsuccessful and successful RFAs are marked and also translate the rest of the UI, but overall it should work now. When and how should I decide whether to remove the issues tags on those pages? @Healthcare dot goof Your contributions look great, I've gone ahead and removed the tags (you could have done them as well when you think the problem has been adequately addressed). Two points of feedback, make sure to add links to terms that a person might not be familiar with and keep our biography of living people policy in mind when editing anything controversial (unless proven, always mention that the action was alleged etc). Recent changes

  • Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility.   • The text colors that are used for visited-links, hovered-links, and active-links, were also slightly changed last week to improve their accessibility in both light mode and dark mode. [43]

  • Starting 26 June, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link at English Wikipedia, making this feature available for you to use at all wikis. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they were linked to, even if this comment has since been moved elsewhere. WikiCup 2024 July newsletter

The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.

The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:

So far this year, competitors have gotten 28 featured articles, 38 featured lists, 240 good articles, 92 in the news credits, and at least 285 did you know credits. They have conducted 279 featured article reviews, as well as 492 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 22 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed during Round 4, which starts on 1 July at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Recent changes

  • Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [48]
  • Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [49]
  • If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [50][51]
  • Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [52]
  • Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
  • One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Mandailing (w:btm:) [53]

Hello my mentor, I wanted to ask which is the best way to access a draft in wikipedia? from my understanding I think the only way to access a previously written draft is to just go on my watchlist and click on the raw pages, then just follow the link on my previously written drafts. @Trbhmn I think that is a valid way of navigating to a draft, I personally often just type the name of the article/draft in the top search bar as well. I find that to be quicker since I have a lot of watchlisted pages. Sohom (talk) 18:12, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
