Administrator Elections: Discussion phase

Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

The discussion phase of the October 2024 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • November 1–? - Scrutineering phase

During October 22–24, we will be in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages will open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Discussion phase.

On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Copied from Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous) § 'Wikidata item' link is moving, finally. because this page is listed on Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)/Subscribe.

Hello everyone, I previously wrote on the 27th September to advise that the Wikidata item sitelink will change places in the sidebar menu, moving from the General section into the In Other Projects section. The scheduled rollout date of 04.10.2024 was delayed due to a necessary request for Mobile/MinervaNeue skin. I am happy to inform that the global rollout can now proceed and will occur later today, 22.10.2024 at 15:00 UTC-2. Please let us know if you notice any problems or bugs after this change. There should be no need for null-edits or purging cache for the changes to occur. Kind regards, -Danny Benjafield (WMDE) 11:29, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

Important: Please update user script installation

Hi there, you currently have a user script installed from Anne drew Andrew and Drew. Several weeks ago, I changed my username to Anne drew, and unfortunately, due to an issue with script redirects, the scripts you have installed under my old username no longer function.

To fix this, please update your JavaScript pages (Special:MyPage/common.js or Special:MyPage/skin.js) by replacing all instances of Anne drew Andrew and Drew with Anne drew.

If any of this is unclear, please ping Anne drew for help. I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding!

Thanks – Anne drew

Question from Scriptscrap (16:50, 23 October 2024)

Can I create a personal list of articles about a subject as somewhat of a checklist. Sort of like you would check off birds in a bird book? I see the watch list which is similar to what I am thinking but what if I want different lists for different things? Like check off a list of all math articles that I have read or all scientists that I have added books about to my book collection. --Scriptscrap (talk) 16:50, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

Scriptscrap, the only thing I am aware of is the mobile app which allows you to create lists. Apologies for the late response. — Qwerfjkltalk 11:41, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi can you help me create these pages? Mycrushrajveer (talk) 03:51, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

Mycrushrajveer, what exactly would youi like help with? I can see the three drafts are about actresses, so please make sure they pass the notability guideline before writing the articles - they will be declined if they're not notable. You'll also need to find some sources for the articles. — Qwerfjkltalk 11:44, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing seven million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read WP:Your first article. If you haven't already also check out WP:TUTORIAL; it's a lot of fun!
That said, when you want to have a go at writing an article, try Wikipedia:Requested articles/Arts and entertainment/Literature#Authors (poets, novelists and fiction writers) if you need a subject to write about; if you already have a subject in mind, just make sure they pass the general notability guidelines, so you don't waste your time. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:41, 7 November 2024 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on HH16 (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:33, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

The Lockman Hole

I'm considering making an edit to the Lockman Hole article (Lockman Hole), after a brief mid-video interview with Jay Lockman himself where he voiced a preference for the name "Lockman Window".

I thought it might be a good courteous gesture of this community to change the beginning of the Lockman Hole article to read something more like "The Lockman Hole, or Lockman Window, is an area of the sky in which..."

Do you think this would be appropriate? Necessary Addition (talk) 20:00, 8 November 2024 (UTC)

I should add the source, timestamped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWJBAGrG0ms&t=1474s Necessary Addition (talk) 22:06, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
Necessary Addition, it would at least be worth creating a redirect at Lockman Window (which I've just done). I'm not familiar with the subject, so I don't not how common the term is - if it's unlikely to be known to most people who know the topic, it's probably not worth including - but feel free to be bold and edit it yourself — Qwerfjkltalk 15:42, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

Category:Incest in Greek mythology

Hi Qwerfjkl, earlier this year you closed the deletion discussion for Category:Incest in Greek mythology. [20] While I was the only editor in that discussion in favour of keeping the category, I don't think others really addressed my argument meaningfully, and I disagree with the category's deletion. I'm not really suggesting that you interpreted consensus incorrectly (I don't think you did), but rather that I don't think there was good reason for deletion. I was unsure whether WP:DELREV was the correct venue for this (as that seems to be for arguing that the closer misinterpreted consensus), so contacting you directly seemed logical. – Michael Aurel (talk) 01:28, 11 November 2024 (UTC)

Michael Aurel, I think the best thing to do would be to start a discussion at WT:CFD and ping the participants to that discussion to see if you can work something out. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:54, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
Ah ok, thanks, so there isn't an official process for this then. I might consult with the editor who created the category first, as since I left my initial comment here I've noticed that in the last month or two they created a similar but distinct category, Category:Mythological people involved in incest, but assuming they think it's necessary, I'll start a discussion at WT:CFD as you've recommended. – Michael Aurel (talk) 10:24, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Task 31 oddities

This was an odd one. No lint errors at all on the page when it edited, but the bot still changed X to Y, and created an unclosed italics issue due to the closing italics being after the date/time and not matching the sig pattern. Thought it was worth noting that it created an issue in case that's something that can be prevented. If it's just a odd fluke, no big deal.

And I also see that the bot is only fixing half of Timbouctou's signature. It didn't fix the missing closer italics on the Timbouctou userpage link portion: (example 1 and example 2). If that's intentional and it'll fix the other part later, ok. Just found it surprising. Zinnober9 (talk) 00:41, 15 November 2024 (UTC)

The first issue is due to the user putting tags after the timestamp. I've just modified their other signatures that do this. The second problem is simply because I don't have that replacement listed; I've added it now. Qwerfjkltalk 11:56, 16 November 2024 (UTC)

New Linter patterns

If you have time to run Task 31 against more patterns, I have a new batch collected from the signature submissions page in my sandbox. If you run a test edit against each of the patterns, I'll be happy to check the edits. I have moderate confidence that I got them right, but something could definitely have gone wrong with one or more patterns during the copy-paste-find-replace-concatenate process. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:57, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Nice catch. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:06, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
@Jonesey95, I checked over the rest and they looked good. When I ran the bot, I noticed Talk:Meal, Ready-to-Eat/Archive 1 (Diff ~1257216016) where the replacement actually introduced an error. Any idea how best to handle this? I suppose adding a space at the end of the find & replacement strings would work, though there might be other cases that have similar problems. — Qwerfjkltalk 21:02, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
Yes, include a trailing space in the "find" and the "replace" string for the Bahamut signature. I do that all the time in my regexes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:12, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
@Jonesey95, okay, I'll add the trailing whitespace for that and any other replacements that look like they could be vulnerable to this kind of problem. — Qwerfjkltalk 21:15, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
I scanned through the rest of the entries for similar problems. It looks like the string for "DCI2026" needs a trailing space in both strings also. The rest appear to be fine, at least with respect to this potential error. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:16, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
I've made the changes. I think I'll run the batch tomorrow, I just need to do a bit more error checking. Also, one of the replacements uses the search insource:/\[\[User:Yellow Dingo\|\<b style\=\"color:\#FFCC33\">Yellow\<\/b> \<b style\=\"color:brown\">Dingo]]'''/ which returns no results. The total number of unique titles found is 24,437. Qwerfjkltalk 21:36, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
It appears that the Yellow Dingo signatures have been fixed; they were in a previous batch and it looks like I neglected to remove them from the table after that run. No worries! Thanks in advance for running the task; I look forward to tens of thousands of fixes, and I'll have another batch once that has run. There were so many this time that I didn't go digging for more patterns that weren't already listed on the table. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:06, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
@Jonesey95, I've started the batch. The code needed a little modification because it was stripping the replacements. Qwerfjkltalk 17:24, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
If you let me know what adjustments you needed to make, I can try to fix my process for generating the strings for you. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:20, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
@Jonesey95, it wasn't a problem on your end, the bug was in the code. Qwerfjkltalk 18:22, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Great job with this bot run! I have updated the signature submissions page with some results and will work on a new batch of patterns. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:16, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I may need help finding some usable sources for my wiki page, considering there aren't many secondary sources out on the internet. There are mainly just primary sources and my page keeps getting denied. --JustNason (talk) 03:08, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

@JustNason, if you can't find sources then the subject might not be notable under Wikipedia's guidelines. Qwerfjkltalk 17:28, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
Alright, thank you. I will wait till I have more sources :) JustNason (talk) 22:53, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
