Style guidelines for disambiguation hatnotes

Hi there,

Thank you for expanding the Film Programme redirect into a full article in its own right.

I notice that you included a disambiguation ("dab") hatnote at the start, which was useful, but please note that- to the best of my knowledge- such dab lines should follow similar rules to the full disambiguation page style, i.e. only link variants of- or items likely to be confused with- the "The Film Programme" itself and not (e.g) Claudia Winkelman, since that name doesn't require disambiguation there.

Hope this explains things. All the best, Ubcule (talk) 17:40, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Enough of this nonsense

You have been here more than long enough to know not to create them (Csaba Sógor the latest), please can you add some sources? GiantSnowman 19:58, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

(watching) So you say? I added one to the one already there. Don't you think you confused source and inline citation? For all members of the European Parliament, there's an entry. - Please, if you catch an article I wrote with edit summary "start", - give me some time for sourcing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:46, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) See also WP:DONOTDEMOLISH. Montanabw(talk) 21:21, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Again, creating unreferenced articles about living people is not on - Franck Proust and María Muñiz de Urquiza the latest. If I see it again I will have to block you for violating WP:BLP. It's not hard to add one quick reference while you build an article, is it? There's really no excuse. GiantSnowman 19:32, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
You won't have to do anything of the kind. Your alternative is to not be a dick, read the sensible replies given to you above, and wait for work on those short stubs to progress (as indeed it has in each of those you cite). Meanwhile, do please feel free to point out any defamatory or otherwise harmful (to the subject or the project) content in those stubs. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 08:04, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
BLP clearly says "Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion" - the fact the content is not "defamatory or otherwise harmful" is irrelevant. "John Smith has a massive penis" is not necessarily defamatory or harmful, would you allow that to remain? Sourcing new articles is both very important and very easy, and the fact you fail to recognise or accept either of those two facts is highly concerning. GiantSnowman 13:15, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
(still watching) The key word in what you quote is "contentious". Your failure to see that is discerning, so is your choice of example. Wikipedia has problems. A stub being without a reference for a short while is not one of the serious ones, if you ask me. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:20, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
Because I actually care about BLP I view all unsourced material as contentious. I wonder how many seconds it took to make this edit, and I again question why that could not be done before clicking 'save' for the first time. GiantSnowman 13:23, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
I have no time to answer because I left a new article without inline citations. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:40, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
C'mon, Gerda, Giant Snowman isn't confusing inline citations with sources. The articles he pointed out had zero sources, not even a bare url external link, and remained so for hours after creation, e.g. [1], [2], [3], and no doubt many more. His initial request was entirely reasonable. Voceditenore (talk) 15:19, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
I didn't say he was confusing anything. I said that my priority was sourcing. I have almost no time today, please understand, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:45, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes you did. When Giant Snowman first mentioned this here, your reply was "So you say? I added one to the one already there. Don't you think you confused source and inline citation?". In fact, when he posted here, that article had zero sources despite the fact that it asserted that the subject was a pastor in the Reformed Church in Romania (information pulled out of nowhere?) and remained so until another editor finally added one. The same applies to the other examples. I repeat, Giant Snowman's request was perfectly reasonable. I too consider rapidly creating a series of unsourced stubs about living people with zero sources and expecting someone else to provide them to be not only bad practice, but also a completely unnecessary violation of our policy on BLPs. Voceditenore (talk) 16:36, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
The assertion about the reformed church was not added by me. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:30, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Such irrelevant discussion of pudenda is not welcome here. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:30, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
That's exactly my point - where is this information coming from? If you are so pushed for time that you cannot provide even a basic reference then do not create the article. If this continues then the matter will be raised elsewhere. GiantSnowman 17:04, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
Actually, I've just seen that Salvatore Caronna was created this morning. The sole reference is so poor that it constitutes no-sourcing at all. I will be taking this matter to ANI. GiantSnowman 17:07, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

My Two Cents: Andy, you need to either (a) hang a { { construction } } template on the top if you're coming back to source out the microstubs you are churning out; or (b) take another 30 seconds to add one source. That's really pretty much a mandatory minimum for BLP, is it not? Hell, it's a minimum for anything at WP these days. Don't get your backhair up, just do what we all know needs to be done for each and every new start. Carrite (talk) 05:27, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Such a template would discourage collaborative editing, which is what neither I nor Wikipedia are about. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:30, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Any ideas...

Andy, I've noticed that, fairly recently, the infoboxes at articles such as Warwick Castle and Berkhamsted Castle aren't displaying their maps. This seems to be fairly widespread across similar articles, but I can't see what might be causing it... Any ideas? Hchc2009 (talk) 17:54, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Template mergers

Hi Andy, I have noticed you have been nominating a ton of templates to be merged, and quite frankly, it makes many pages look rather unsightly, particularly when the template appears in the middle of the page (i.e. Andrew Jackson and the cabinet template). Do you know of a way to minimize this negative effect for our readers? It makes the pages look poor and sloppy. Is there a particular necessity in merging the templates (e.g., bandwidth/server space or something?); I am just concerned it is having a net negative effect for the readers – am more than open to discussion. Thanks in advance! Go Phightins! 20:56, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

@Go Phightins!: Belated response, sorry. The need to merge or delete redundant templates is to reduce the maintenance overhead, and to reduce confusion for editors trying to choose which to use. The notification system is standard, and intended to ensure that all interested editors are aware of the proposed changes. If you object to how it appears, you should raise that on a central talk page for the TfD process. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:52, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Before reverting User:Lukeno94 again, I think it would be worth you examining his (and others') concerns at WT:FOOTY and Template talk:Infobox football biography. The changes made by User:Davykamanzi have dramatically altered the aesthetics of the infobox, and for no reason other than to apply embedding functionality to the infobox – a function that is not currently necessary. Once Davykamanzi has worked out how to solve the aesthetic issue, then the changes should be applied, but not before. – PeeJay 23:04, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
I would't have reverted him the first time, had he made his concerns clear, instead of using an edit summary to the effect "revert undiscussed changes". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:23, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, it seems that you have added an incorrect redirect for Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary to Birmingham Union workhouse...this is a different institute that was around at least 75 years before. I have placed a delete proposal on the redirect page and tried to explain why along with a link to information about the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary on the University of Birmingham website. Thought I would keep you updated. All the best, Mountaincirque 16:11, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

The cited sources indicate that the name "Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary" was also used for the Birmingham Union workhouse. Since we only have an article on the latter, it's appropriate to redirect, When we have an article on the earlier institution, it can be a disambiguation page, or hatted. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:18, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
Ok, I'm happy to go with your decision, thanks. My concern arose from the fact that we with the advent of the redirect we have in-line links from the main University of Birmingham page to the Birmingham Union workhouse which state that that was where medical teaching originally began in the 1770s, this is factually incorrect as it actually began in a different workhouse in Birmingham around 70 years before and that facility didn't exist at the time. Could referenced information be added to the Birmingham Union workhouse to note that another workhouse existed beforehand of the same name to avoid confusion?
FYI, there are some good resources on the original Birmingham Workhouse here: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Birmingham/ Mountaincirque 17:21, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
A better solution might be to create a stub (or longer article!) on the older facility, then treat it as I describe above. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:24, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Help with COI issue and sourcing

Hi Andy,

I was wondering if you could help me out with the page I am trying to create. I'm new to Wikipedia so pretty unfamiliar with the backend of it. I've attempted to update my sources so that I now have 20 references and some related reading, which I hope to be enough on that end? But how do I resolve the COI issue?

Thanks! Lindsay Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/ColemanResearch — Preceding unsigned comment added by ColemanResearch (talkcontribs) 16:52, 13 March 2014‎

Firstly, register a new account, in your own name (or use a pseudonym which is not linked to CR, and which does suggest that it may be a corporate or shared one). Then read WP:COI and drop a note here from your new account, once you've done so. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:56, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

AFCH rewrite

Hi Andy!

You can find more information about the rewrite at WP:AFCHRW -- and it really is a rewrite. We've just begun very limited testing of a very alpha version, so don't expect it to be become mainstream until at least a few months from now. Don't go around telling folks to switch yet, though -- tl;dr, things could explode at any minute. You're welcome to try it out, of course; any and all feedback (which you can give from within the tool) will be greatly appreciated and will help shape the development of the script.

Cheers,

New DYKs

Hi Andy, I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm looking to work on a few 'new' articles, maybe create with your help, on something outside of my usual areas of interest. I want to work on bringing them up to DYK status. Could you help me out? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:07, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

What help do you need? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:13, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
Well, if you could point me to an article that can be a potential DYK and doesn't exist/is a stub. It'd be great. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:20, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
That depends on your area of interest, and what you would find it easy to research. for instance, if you want to write about places in India, see Category:India geography stubs. For actor biographies, see Category:Actor stubs. You can see lots of other stub categories, hierarchically, under Category:Stub categories. Hey thanks a lot Andy! I discovered this today and created an article. If you could help me bring it up to DYK, it'd be great. It's Foldscope. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:53, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Good work (and a nice topic). You should go ahead and make a "self nomination" at T:DYKT. As a new DYK contributor, you don't have to review another article, so skip that bit. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:41, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

I was gonna do that today. :) P.S: It'd be my 9th DYK. :D I've listed all my achievements on my user page. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 03:39, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Also, What do I use for the hook? It's construction, or price?-Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:03, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
Both! Try "...that Foldscope is made from paper, costs under $US 1, but can help to detect 12 disease-causing organisms?" Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:20, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
