Style guidelines for disambiguation hatnotes
Hi there,
Thank you for expanding the Film Programme redirect into a full article in its own right.
I notice that you included a disambiguation ("dab") hatnote at the start, which was useful, but please note that- to the best of my knowledge- such dab lines should follow similar rules to the full disambiguation page style, i.e. only link variants of- or items likely to be confused with- the "The Film Programme" itself and not (e.g) Claudia Winkelman, since that name doesn't require disambiguation there.
Hope this explains things. All the best, Ubcule (talk) 17:40, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Unreferenced BLPs
Enough of this nonsense
|
---|
You have been here more than long enough to know not to create them (Csaba Sógor the latest), please can you add some sources? GiantSnowman 19:58, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
That's exactly my point - where is this information coming from? If you are so pushed for time that you cannot provide even a basic reference then do not create the article. If this continues then the matter will be raised elsewhere. GiantSnowman 17:04, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. GiantSnowman 17:18, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
My Two Cents: Andy, you need to either (a) hang a { { construction } } template on the top if you're coming back to source out the microstubs you are churning out; or (b) take another 30 seconds to add one source. That's really pretty much a mandatory minimum for BLP, is it not? Hell, it's a minimum for anything at WP these days. Don't get your backhair up, just do what we all know needs to be done for each and every new start. Carrite (talk) 05:27, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Template mergers
Hi Andy, I have noticed you have been nominating a ton of templates to be merged, and quite frankly, it makes many pages look rather unsightly, particularly when the template appears in the middle of the page (i.e. Andrew Jackson and the cabinet template). Do you know of a way to minimize this negative effect for our readers? It makes the pages look poor and sloppy. Is there a particular necessity in merging the templates (e.g., bandwidth/server space or something?); I am just concerned it is having a net negative effect for the readers – am more than open to discussion. Thanks in advance! Go Phightins! 20:56, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
- @Go Phightins!: Belated response, sorry. The need to merge or delete redundant templates is to reduce the maintenance overhead, and to reduce confusion for editors trying to choose which to use. The notification system is standard, and intended to ensure that all interested editors are aware of the proposed changes. If you object to how it appears, you should raise that on a central talk page for the TfD process. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:52, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

- Before reverting User:Lukeno94 again, I think it would be worth you examining his (and others') concerns at WT:FOOTY and Template talk:Infobox football biography. The changes made by User:Davykamanzi have dramatically altered the aesthetics of the infobox, and for no reason other than to apply embedding functionality to the infobox – a function that is not currently necessary. Hi there, it seems that you have added an incorrect redirect for Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary to Birmingham Union workhouse...this is a different institute that was around at least 75 years before. I have placed a delete proposal on the redirect page and tried to explain why along with a link to information about the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary on the University of Birmingham website. Thought I would keep you updated. All the best, Mountaincirque 16:11, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- The cited sources indicate that the name "Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary" was also used for the Birmingham Union workhouse. Since we only have an article on the latter, it's appropriate to redirect, When we have an article on the earlier institution, it can be a disambiguation page, or hatted. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:18, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, I'm happy to go with your decision, thanks. My concern arose from the fact that we with the advent of the redirect we have in-line links from the main University of Birmingham page to the Birmingham Union workhouse which state that that was where medical teaching originally began in the 1770s, this is factually incorrect as it actually began in a different workhouse in Birmingham around 70 years before and that facility didn't exist at the time. Could referenced information be added to the Birmingham Union workhouse to note that another workhouse existed beforehand of the same name to avoid confusion?
- FYI, there are some good resources on the original Birmingham Workhouse here: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Birmingham/ Mountaincirque 17:21, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- A better solution might be to create a stub (or longer article!) on the older facility, then treat it as I describe above. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:24, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks
Thanks for taking the time for the constructive edits and advice on the Schneps page. (Including fixing typos that I can't believe I missed after multiple proof reads - how does that happen?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by OttRider (talk • contribs) 16:34, 9 March 2014
- My pleasure. At least typos here can be fixed - it's worse when your work is in print. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:43, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
DYK QPQ needed
You nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Charity Bick has gone 2 weeks without a QPQ. Please do one soon so we don't have to close the nomination as rejected. --ThaddeusB (talk) 06:31, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
- Please see new note on DYK nomination page. Yoninah (talk) 22:30, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Help with COI issue and sourcing
Hi Andy,
I was wondering if you could help me out with the page I am trying to create. I'm new to Wikipedia so pretty unfamiliar with the backend of it. I've attempted to update my sources so that I now have 20 references and some related reading, which I hope to be enough on that end? But how do I resolve the COI issue?
Thanks! Lindsay Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/ColemanResearch — Preceding unsigned comment added by ColemanResearch (talk • contribs) 16:52, 13 March 2014
- Firstly, register a new account, in your own name (or use a pseudonym which is not linked to CR, and which does suggest that it may be a corporate or shared one). Then read WP:COI and drop a note here from your new account, once you've done so. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:56, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
AFCH rewrite
Hi Andy!
You can find more information about the rewrite at WP:AFCHRW -- and it really is a rewrite. We've just begun very limited testing of a very alpha version, so don't expect it to be become mainstream until at least a few months from now. Don't go around telling folks to switch yet, though -- tl;dr, things could explode at any minute. You're welcome to try it out, of course; any and all feedback (which you can give from within the tool) will be greatly appreciated and will help shape the development of the script.
Cheers,

New DYKs
Hi Andy, I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm looking to work on a few 'new' articles, maybe create with your help, on something outside of my usual areas of interest. I want to work on bringing them up to DYK status. Could you help me out? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:07, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
- What help do you need? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:13, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
- Well, if you could point me to an article that can be a potential DYK and doesn't exist/is a stub. It'd be great. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:20, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
- That depends on your area of interest, and what you would find it easy to research. for instance, if you want to write about places in India, see Category:India geography stubs. For actor biographies, see Category:Actor stubs. You can see lots of other stub categories, hierarchically, under Category:Stub categories. - Hey thanks a lot Andy! I discovered this today and created an article. If you could help me bring it up to DYK, it'd be great. It's Foldscope. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:53, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- Good work (and a nice topic). You should go ahead and make a "self nomination" at T:DYKT. As a new DYK contributor, you don't have to review another article, so skip that bit. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:41, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

I was gonna do that today. :) P.S: It'd be my 9th DYK. :D I've listed all my achievements on my user page. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 03:39, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
- Also, What do I use for the hook? It's construction, or price?-Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:03, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
- Both! Try "...that Foldscope is made from paper, costs under $US 1, but can help to detect 12 disease-causing organisms?" Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:20, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
