@Doc James Pretty cool! Per Wikipedia:Gadget#Proposals this should be proposed at WP:VPT. I've no reservations, but I'm not sure given the narrow use-case that I would support this being a default-on gadget. MusikAnimal talk 17:34, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
Or actually, if Template:Imagestack (which is a redirect here, btw) puts the page in a unique category, the gadget can be default-on since we can set gadget definition to only load the gadget when viewing pages in that category. MusikAnimal talk 17:35, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
Yes that makes sense. We are looking at making some improvements and than will apply to VPT. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:17, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

MusikBot II doesn't use redirect protection templates

So, I noticed in this edit that instead of using {{R semi-protected}} et al., MusikBot II tags redirects with {{pp}}. I think that it's not ideal that the bot does this, since using the WP:rcat adds the page to the more specific category Category:Wikipedia semi-protected redirects which is a subcategory of Category:Wikipedia semi-protected pages. If it's not too difficult to implement, would you consider changing the bot so it uses rcats in that case? Nickps (talk) 01:22, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

@Nickps Any reason {{pp}} (more specifically Module:Protection banner) can't do this automatically? I was under the impression it handles some things automatically, like showing the "edit" vs "pending changes" padlock. Also, I would think the more appropriate fix is to categorize the redirect with one the R template index templates, as those handle categorization automatically and the bot knows to skip pages that use them. MusikAnimal talk 23:15, 26 May 2024 (UTC)
I'm don't know why Module:Protection banner doesn't handle redirects. Considering rcats already handle them, it was probably too niche of a situation to merit special casing.
As for your other point, the categorisation redirects from {{R template index}} can't handle protection automatically; only {{Rcat shell}} can. The only problem is that bots are not allowed to add that template to uncategorised redirects, so if the bot runs across such a redirect, the only choice it has is to use a protection rcat like {{R semi-protected}} directly. Who Wrote That? extension

Hello MusikAnimal!

Maybe you can help me. I am having issues with the Who Wrote That? browser extension. It hasn't been working for me for a number of days. I've asked on the WP:DISCORD and others report issues with using scripts, too. Renerpho (talk) 16:36, 7 July 2024 (UTC)

@Renerpho I'm going to need more information. I just did a quick test and everything seemed fine to me. Are there particular articles where WWT isn't working? Please provide links, as well as a description of exactly what is not working for you (i.e. what happens when you click on "Who Wrote That?"). Thanks! MusikAnimal talk 17:57, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal: Thank you. I just checked and it's working fine now. Earlier, no matter what article I tried it on, it would give an error message, asking me to try again later. This lasted for about a week, but I guess it's resolved now. Renerpho (talk) 23:42, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
I did discover the service that processes new revisions was in fact down. So when it wasn't working for you, you probably were checking articles that had new revisions, while the ones that did work were already processed by mw:WikiWho. Anyway I've got the service running again and added measures to prevent this from happening again. There are about 2 weeks worth of revisions that WikiWho missed, so it will take at least several days to fully catch up. In the meantime, you may see errors for some articles, but everything should be back to normal soon enough. MusikAnimal talk 18:43, 10 July 2024 (UTC)

MusikBot tagging articles for improvement

Hi! I can't help but notice that MusikBot isn't putting the template under disambiguation templates, leading to things like this. Is this intentional? Neo Purgatorio (talk) 05:18, 6 August 2024 (UTC)

It is not intentional. There are hundreds if not thousands of templates that are supposed to precede banner-style templates. Some bots may be programmed to know what to look for, but this one is not. Fortunately (I think) it's a relatively minor issue, and the {{AFI}} banner is only temporarily there, anyway. MusikAnimal talk 17:13, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

MusikBot II protecting DRN

Hello. MusikBot II has protected the Wikipedia:Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. Would you mind unprotecting it and excluding it? Thanks. Kovcszaln6 (talk) 18:11, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

It's also done WP:COIN and WP:BLPN - both of which probably shouldn't be autoprotected. Mdann52 (talk) 18:50, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
I've undone the protection at BLPN, COIN, and DRN. Evidently they're transcluded from all those pesky user dashboards, because they're mentioned on an admin board somewhere. We have the ability to exclude pages from the bot... I'm looking into it. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:57, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
I see now, DRN for example is currently transcluded into all 247 of its archives. I'll add these three exceptions, but if something has changed then this may not be the end of it. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:04, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

Sep 25: Wikimedia NYC Annual Election Meeting (plus Latin music event on Sep 21!)

September 25: Annual Election & Members Meeting

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our Annual Election & Members Meeting, with in-person at Prime Produce in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, as well as an online-based participation option.

The Members' Meeting is similar to other WikiWednesday meetups, except that its primary function is to elect a new Board of Directors. We will elect three board seats, half of the elected seats on the board. After being elected, those elected can potentially appoint more seats.

We will also focus on the Wikimedia NYC Strategic Plan, our Financial Report, and Annual and Monthly event teams for the coming year.

Election info:

  • To run for election or to vote, you must be a dues-paying member of Wikimedia New York City, having renewed in the past 12 months.
  • Voting will be both online, via emailed ballots from the ElectionBuddy service, and in-person.
  • The poll will be open for the 48 hours between 8pm EDT on September 23 and 8pm EDT on September 25.
  • For additional information, please consult the Election FAQ.

Meeting info:

All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct.

P.S. Also upcoming just before our annual meeting is the Latin music edit-a-thon, Wikicurious: Editing to the Beat (RSVP at Eventbrite), on Saturday September 21!

Sat Sep 21: Wikicurious - Editing to the Beat ♫ @ Lehman College

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for the "Editing to the Beat" event of the beginner-focused Wikicurious series at Lehman College. This is the second event of the series, following the inaugural event at Civic Hall in July. Led by a 9-person live band demonstrating Caribbean and Latin musical genres, we'll engage with efforts such as WikiProject Latin Music, and will encourage editing on both English and Spanish Wikipedia. All are welcome, and newcomers and aspiring editors are especially encouraged to attend. Registration via Eventbrite is required for building entry, and is also encouraged on the event page on Meta.

The Wikicurious series is supported by Craig Newmark Philanthropies. Wikimedia NYC is an official affiliate and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation. Also supporting this event are Equis, The Celia Cruz Foundation, and the International Museum of Salsa. In association with WikiCari and AfroCrowd.

Geonotices not updating

Hi, MusikBot II is running, but has not updated MediaWiki:Gadget-geonotice-list.js since 22 September, despite two edits to Wikipedia:Geonotice/list.json - are they incorrectly formatted? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:22, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

@Redrose64 This appears to be some sort of Toolforge hiccup. The job literally wasn't running, and the only thing Toolforge told me was "Error". Very helpful! Lol. I tried debugging by running a one-off job, and that worked fine. That tells me indeed, Toolforge was having issues firing the job for some reason. I've reloaded the jobs configuration, so hopefully things are okay now. However I can't say for certain until further changes are made to the Geonotice config.
While we're on the topic, maybe this is a good time to reevaluate this bot-powered system. It was only introduced because the advent of interface-admin meant most admins couldn't edit the JS page anymore, but they can still edit JSON. Since the bot was introduced, it's now possible for the Geonotice gadget itself to load the JSON page directly, eliminating the need for the bot altogether. The only downside here is validations the bot does (such as country codes, coordinates, among other things). We didn't have this validation prior to the bot, so maybe we don't care. Since the bot was introduced, I see only two instances where someone put in something invalid. Even then, I don't know if they actually utilized the bot report to fix their errors. TechnologyAdvice

Hello, I was searching for TechnologyAdvice, a Nashville-based technology marketing company that has acquired a number of prominent technology related publications in the past few years. However, I discovered that such a page had been deleted by you nine years ago ~ years before it acquired over 20 tech publications, such as: TechRepublic; eWeek; Datamation; and, Channel Insider (this page was also deleted 14 years ago). Evidently, this is not the company it was nine years ago. See:

*NB: In preparing this post, it also emerged that the TechnologyAdvice dot com domain has been blacklisted...
Anyway, maybe it is time to revisit this page and potentially resurrect it. If so, is it still possible to recover the page - at least before it was blanked-out - and update it?

PERMClerk job

It looks like MusikBot's PERMClerk job might be stuck. There are quite a few completed requests that should be archived, but for some reason, the bot isn't doing that. The last time it took any action on the relevant pages was back on 7 October. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:56, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

Fixed This was apparently yet another Toolforge hiccup. The job was stuck. I simply killed it and all seems to be fine now. Thanks for letting me know, MusikAnimal talk 19:51, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

Pinocchio (1940)

The phrase in the plot section of the article of Pinocchio (1940) is incorrect. It's "In search FOR Pinocchio", not "of Pinocchio". They kept reverting the same error for no reason. 151.46.70.7 (talk) 10:00, 13 October 2024 (UTC)

Suggestion/feature request/whatever

@JJMC89: It would be cool if the CopyPatrolBot could ignore sections with a title like "selected works/selected articles/publications/whatever". Such sections often contain the titles of published works and the copyvio detector detects that those have also been listed elsewhere which leads to a false positive. Here is an example. Thanks, Polygnotus (talk) 13:40, 13 October 2024 (UTC)

Geonotices not syncing (Musikbot II)

We made some changes,
Your bot
Did not

Please kindly make
It do
Thank you!

And I just found the discussion in the archives, making it load the JSON directly sounds like a great idea if that's possible. I don't think the validation would be a huge loss, especially since we now have Wikipedia:Geonotice/Map for checking locations. the wub "?!" 23:00, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

Grr, seems like it got "stuck" again without any hint as to what went wrong. I've restarted the job and it seems to be running fine now. I really shouldn't have to add an auto-killer… but I will if this happens again.
It should be possible to have the gadget load the JSON directly, using the package option. I don't have time to help with that right now, I'm afraid. If the bot keeps failing though, I may be pressured to do something.
Apologies for the inconvenience, MusikAnimal talk 07:04, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, don't worry about it! the wub "?!" 09:53, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

MusikBot II FixPP task

Hi. The Prayut Chan-o-cha page was semi-protected for one year from 16 August and had the Pp-blp template added, but this was (presumably inadvertently) removed by an editor the following day. Since then, the bot still hasn't restored the template. Is this expected behaviour? --Paul_012 (talk) 05:01, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

No. My guess is there was some hiccup, either with Toolforge (which seems to be happening a lot lately) or the bot itself, and it simply missed this one. The bot combs the protection log to keep track of where it left off, so if for whatever reason things failed after the cached log ID was written, it will never revisit older log entries. I hope this issue isn't widespread! For now, I've just manually re-added the template. MusikAnimal talk 18:20, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to watch this page. If the bot goes through the protection log only once in near-real time, I think it was functioning normally then. The protecting admin had already added the template; it was removed some 16 hours after the page was protected. But thanks for explaining, I wasn't aware of how the bot worked. --Paul_012 (talk) 23:46, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Concern involving User:MusikBot II/TemplateProtector

I recently created {{RM created}}, and it was quickly semi-protected by MusikBot II for having over 400 transclusions, which I thought was odd, because it had only ever been used by me. I then saw the problem: I had added it to {{Done/See also}}, which itself has over 400 transclusions. This led me to a concern—does this mean that any autoconfirmed editor can semi-protect any template (or worse, any page) by transcluding it onto that documentation page? If not, please explain the measures the bot has taken to prevent this. JJPMaster (she/they) 19:49, 23 November 2024 (UTC)

You should ask the bot op who will actually know the answer instead. Izno (talk) 20:02, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
I have moved the discussion appropriately. JJPMaster (she/they) 20:12, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
I think this might be a little too WP:BEANS-y to discuss here. If people insist I elaborate publicly, I will, but I think I'd prefer an oath of silence – especially here on this talk page which I believe is still frequented by long-term abusers. MusikAnimal talk 00:54, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

permclerk

Your bot reported 7 errors relating to PermClerk, please review the errors. ToadetteEdit (talk) 07:19, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

Something is definitely awry alright. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be causing any actual problems. I will look into this more when I get a chance. Thanks for letting me know, MusikAnimal talk 00:48, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
There are some processed requests that meet the archive criteria, but the bot is not archiving them. Maybe it needs a restart. – DreamRimmer (talk) 00:59, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
The PermClerk task is still down. I wrote a Python script to fetch processed requests from PERM pages that meet the archive criteria. This script outputs the archivable entries in the same format that the bot uses, allowing users to manually add them to the archive pages and remove them from the PERM pages. Manually formatting archive entries is a challenging task, so I hope this script will save users time whenever the bot is down. – DreamRimmer (talk) 12:50, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
