Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Team trees, Progress section

[edit]

Hey Melofors,

I want to discuss your recent removal of the progress section on Team Trees. As per the talk page I said that I would like to see if there are methods to save the sections before they are deleted. I think I had already gone through the process of saving the section as I had added 9 additional, secondary sources to verify different daily counts. I was actually in the process of adding an additional one when you removed the section! Is there no hope for this section, were my additional sources not enough or is there another reason for deleting the section. Thanks, Pabsoluterince (talk) 23:22, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Pabsoluterince! There hasn't been any word on the topic since December 14, so I decided to just remove it. I'm actually really sorry for reverting your edits. I hadn't been checking up with the article's recent changes, and I didn't see those secondary sources when removing the section. Thanks for being cool about it. Looking at the table before I removed it, it seems to need some fixing up with the numbers. Could you tell me about the additional table you wanted to add? Perhaps we can work on it together in your sandbox? —Melofors 02:06, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I am happy to work through any of the table's problems on either of our sandboxes. I will put up the table as I would have on my sandbox and we can edit it from that point. I actually wasn't planning on adding an additional table, just an additional source to verify Team Trees hitting 20 mil. In regards to the fixing of numbers, I wasn't aware of there being any issue. Pabsoluterince (talk) 03:40, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I am going to add back the section soon, unless you want to change content on my sandbox Pabsoluterince (talk) 14:35, 21 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds great. —Melofors 20:41, 21 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing as the top donations table was removed, I don't think the progress section would do too well in the article either. —Melofors 22:32, 21 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Waifu Labs for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Waifu Labs is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Waifu Labs until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Celestina007 (talk) 02:27, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy neighbor (I'm just south of B'more), wanted to give you a courtesy heads-up that I PRODed the Prity Banerjee article you moved from main space from AfC. I was doing NPP and it jumped out at me that the gender shifted twice in the first paragraph, and then the names of the people and organizations involved changed entirely in the second. The whole article was a copy-paste of another existing article with only 2 unsourced sentences about Pritty added at very beginning. Don't know if you want to work with the page creator to try & salvage it, but as is there's no space for it. JamesG5 (talk) 07:45, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, hey there, I live west of Baltimore. Anyways, I don't know who created the article, I was just fixing the capitalization of the title. The creator's userpage shows he's editing on behalf of his organization, so I'm not too surprised that his edit quality isn't the best. I have no interest in salvaging it. Anyways, happy editing! —  Melofors  TC  07:51, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Several comments on this edit. First, the items you keep removing from the lead section really do belong there. Second, I sourced the name with "AQUACHIGGER - Trademark Details". Justicia. 2018-01-23., and you removed it. Finally, at one point I added the template {{Use mdy dates}}, which makes the numeric dates placed into the article converted automatically.

Finally, the Biography Section as written will never pass review. You need to write about who he is. --evrik (talk) 04:51, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I must admit I am in the wrong, and I apologize for being careless about it. I didn't see that source you added, and I also removed some other things you've fixed. I added it back. However, I can't find any reliable sources for Ouimette's spouse, nor his birth year. —  Melofors  TC  06:45, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

citation formatting inquiry

[edit]

At the article Philoteris, you broke apart the list-defined references saying, "fixed refs". I first wanted to pass along that list-defined references aren't 'broken'; they're just another way of formatting the references within the code for editors. Secondly (and don't take this as anything but a genuine inquiry), what benefit do you get or see from unconsolidated references in the code? — Fourthords | =Λ= | 17:14, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've never seen an article using list-defined references, and I decided to include them in the text as that's what I and likely most other editors are used to. However, I do admit that I shouldn't have implied in my edit summary that the references were broken. —  Melofors  TC  17:39, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, no worries. When I'm editing, I consolidate the references because it allows others to see which sources have been exhausted and which have not, and it affords far-faster updating of sources in the future. It also precludes needing to hunt around in larger articles in case the citation template needs to be changed. I'm partial to LDR formatting, but if you strongly object, I won't use them in further edits of Philoteris. — Fourthords | =Λ= | 19:37, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Islamic organizations established in 1929 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Big Nate: Goes for Broke. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. signed, Rosguill talk 02:00, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

2b2t Copy-edited notice

[edit]

@SpurriousCorrelation: Thank you soooo much!!! I'm really thankful the article's finally gotten a full and much-needed copyedit from an outsider. One objection I have is a part of this edit. If you scroll down to the bottom, you removed "Minecraft is inherently an open-ended sandbox game." I think that sentence is necessary to understand the quote right before it. The quote states that 2b2t is the "ultimate expression of the core mechanic of the game", the "core mechanic" being Minecraft's nature as a sandbox game (no rules). What do you think? Also, are you familiar to Minecraft servers or was this completely new to you? How easy/hard was it to understand for you? Do you have any general suggestions for improvement? Thanks! —  Melofors  TC  07:17, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Melofors: Haha, I am quite familiar with both Minecraft and 2b2t; I run a server and follow SalC1. I picked this article as my first attempt at a copyedit for that reason! As to your point about the removed sentence; I see what you're getting at, I initially removed it because the sentence felt out-of-place. I will re-add it in a form that more explicitly ties it to clarifying the quote. SpurriousCorrelation 07:21, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SpurriousCorrelation: We talked a bit about this at Talk:2b2t#Nature_as_a_sandbox_game, the concern there is WP:SYNTH. New ideas on how to approach this are welcome though! Leijurv (talk) 07:32, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Leijurv: My interpretation would be this is paraphrasing, not synthesis, under WP:QUOTE. SpurriousCorrelation 07:39, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SpurriousCorrelation: I hope so. It obviously makes the article better, I just worried it was WP:SYNTH since we're putting words in the author's mouth. Who knows what "core mechanic" really means, it could be more or less precise than what we think. I don't know. Leijurv (talk) 07:42, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Leijurv: Given that its important for context and grammatically is terrible otherwise, I say keep it. This is not a controversial point if people do complain of synthesis, and I would point to WP:IGNORE after a point. SpurriousCorrelation 07:56, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of 2b2t

[edit]

The article 2b2t you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:2b2t for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

DYK for 2b2t

[edit]

On 12 November 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 2b2t, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that 2b2t, a no-rules Minecraft multiplayer server running since 2010, has seen more than 510,000 distinct Minecraft players join and explore its eight-terabyte map (pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/2b2t. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, 2b2t), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Information icon Hello. Your recent edit to Chi-Chi appears to have added the name of a non-notable entity to a list that normally includes only notable entries. In general, a person, organization or product added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. Notice

The article Hasan, Florida has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Place is not notable, does not meet the criteria of WP:GEOLAND, no reliable sources available other than GNIS

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. - Donald Albury 20:44, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Additionally you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
