Question regarding your page creation
[edit]Hello! You have made a significant number of stubs using a single source (an Excel spreadsheet). I have concerns regarding whether this should continue. Let me know if you've already received approbation for this; I have moved one article to the draft space just based off new-page policy. ~ Pbritti (talk) 16:38, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, and thanks for the question.
- The justification for creating stubs for rural districts (dehestans) previously unaccounted for in Iran is that there are already hundreds of them produced with the identical format around a decade ago. The creation of every stub article was dependent upon one sole source of information: the set of spreadsheets (in Persian) that were released after the results of the 2006 census. (I have the complete set and have become quite the expert on the administrative structure of Iran.)
- Since those stubs have been in existence for a decade now and none of them have been removed, it seemed to me that I was merely "completing the collection" based on the exact same information. Just about the only way one can learn of the population distribution of the country is by going to this granular level, as meager as it is. The fact that coordinates were missing from 90% of the stubs made them rather useless. It may be noted that I have been adding coordinates for these rural districts over the last couple of months and will continue to do so, because they make these stubs much more useful.
- I gave a great deal of thought to this before plunging ahead, but it seems that if my articles meet with disapproval, it probably throws the previous stubs into the exact same scenario. That's worrisome because although stubs, there is nowhere else but English Wikipedia to get these figures and I wanted to fill them out.
- I'd like to hear your thoughts about this, and I appreciate your getting in touch. Brightkingdom (talk) 18:24, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Brightkingdom: I'm not going to impede you on this because this is far outside my wheelhouse. I only happened upon that page creation by chance and wanted to double-check. My concern was largely because you're a fairly recent contributor and you seemed to be translating the names independent of English-language sources; these are not an issue in of themselves, just gave me the impression there was a bad pattern. Perhaps ask someone at the Teahouse before continuing, but you won't hear any other concerns raised by me! Thanks for your prompt response and clear answer! ~ Pbritti (talk) 03:11, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- PS: Consider this my approval of you taking the page I draftified (Draft:Kuhak Esfandak Rural District) and moving it back to the main space. That move was mostly out of an overabundance of caution that does not seem warranted (from me specifically) in this case. ~ Pbritti (talk) 03:14, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back to me. There is nothing wrong with "an overabundance of caution." This is a collaborative effort and we're all wise to consider issues that arise, even if discovered by accident. It is balanced by the "boldness" encouragement in the documentation for users, so there is no doubt it gets tricky sometimes. I have come across a particularly large amount of badly written material, glaring omissions, and some pages almost devoid of information. I have to be ready to receive bad news for myself but good news for Wikipedia, otherwise I should not be here. My best bet in this case might be to join the Iran Project and let them know my plans up front. Thanks again for your valuable insight! Brightkingdom (talk) 14:13, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- Just to let you know, the creation of stubs like this is extremely controversial. Large deletions of stubs like Seh Chahan have occurred, for example Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mazraeh-ye Tahqiqati Tutun. If I were you, I would seek more input (from besides Pbritti and myself) before continuing. Ovinus (talk) 19:48, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- I get it.
- Finishing whatever collection someone else started years ago seemed like a good idea at the time. The fact is I sadly agree on the one hand that the proliferation of stubs is frustrating. (In this particular case, it's somewhat hilarious that an ordinary series of spreadsheets was turned into literally thousands of pages of text that added nothing to the content of the original.) On the other hand, it was a useful exercise for people who cannot read Persian. The best solution at the time would have been to translate the spreadsheet to English offline and then distill the relevant information into a Wiki table; and add geocodes for context, call it a day. Personally I would eliminate around 3,000 Iran stubs and go back to a table.
- I'm going to stop this right now.
- I appreciate your input, Ovinus. No kidding. Brightkingdom (talk) 20:13, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- And I appreciate your ability to self-reflect; not everyone can do that. If you're fluent in Persian you can try expanding some of the less-trivial stubs. Or, expand on stubs in your local area. Ovinus (talk) 20:18, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- I'm going to talk with someone at the Iran Portal and see whether I can get a sense of whether they should be paying more attention to their domain of concern. The articles on population, administrative divisions and geography are so terrible, you have no idea. I really can help, and so I'll try that side. Thanks, Ovinus; rock on. Brightkingdom (talk) 20:49, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

@Ovinus: I appreciate you throwing your insight in here. Glad for both of your patience and careful consideration. If you (Brightkingdom) need any legwork done by someone using Google Translate, I'll gladly try and help expanding these stubs. [edit]An article you recently created, Rask County, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Mass creation of stubs on Iranian Villages
[edit]Hi,
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. You currently appear to be engaged in the mass creation of articles on Turkish villages. Such mass creation can be disruptive, and if you wish to continue creating large quantities of short, similar articles on this topic (or any topic) you should first see if there is a consensus to do so at WP:BRFA, or if the community would prefer this content be provided in a different manner.

Linking to disambiguation pages
[edit]Hi! I wanted to bring your attention to the guideline regarding intentional links to dab pages. When you intentionally create a link to a disambiguation page, as you have done in many hatnotes, you should always use the link that includes the (disambiguation) qualifier, even when it is a redirect. Using the (disambiguation) link informs other editors that the link is not a mistake and doesn't need to be fixed, that is, disambiguated so it points to a particular article. This is a housekeeping practice nearly invisible to most users that saves a lot of editorial time. Happy editing! —ShelfSkewed Talk 15:41, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- Would it be good practice for me to move those pages not currently labeled with (disambiguation) to those that are? For example: a page named Bala Velayat Rural District with several entries ought to be at Bala Velayat Rural District (disambiguation) and then tagged with the geodis template? Brightkingdom (talk) 16:33, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- No. The disambiguation page should be at the (disambiguation) title only in cases where there is a primary topic—see, for example Paris and Paris (disambiguation). In most cases the disambiguation page should be at the plain title, and a (disambiguation) redirect should point to it. —ShelfSkewed Talk 16:56, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- Many thanks for the alert and advice. Please forgive me for the extra work you've had to do in my misguided efforts to prevent it. Better editing is happier editing! Brightkingdom (talk) 17:19, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

- I apologizing for revisiting this issue, but you seem to have misunderstood how disambiguation pages should be linked to, or perhaps how piped links work. For example, in this edit to the article Rivand Rural District, you added the hatnote {{for|other places with a similar name|Rivand{{!}}Rivand (disambiguation)}}.
- The text to the left of the pipe, "Rivand", is the actual link; the text to the right, "Rivand (disambiguation)", is what is displayed. The correct structure is the other way around—that is, the link used should be Rivand (disambiguation), and the display should show "Rivand", the name of the page a user will land on. Therefore: {{for|other places with a similar name|Rivand (disambiguation){{!}}Rivand}} is the correct format. And, of course, the piping is unnecessary when the actual title of the disambiguation page includes the (disambiguation) qualifier. —ShelfSkewed Talk 07:09, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- No apologies necessary. Here's what I think is happening. Immediately after our last communication, I did indeed take what you said to heart. Lo, and behold, the approach worked as intended...except in perhaps 1 out of 6 cases, I would enter "x (disambiguation)|x" and a red-linked "x" would appear in the preview.
- So, I figured, I don't see any way around either 1) flipping the terms, or 2) violating the rule by doing it the way I had previously done it. There's obviously no problem in a case where a page is already called "x (disambiguation)." And it seems oddly unintuitive that some pages not explicitly labeled (disambiguation) are called out and rendered correctly in the hatnote, and some are not.
- Yikes. I hope you know I'm determined to do this right. I'm really sorry you have to revisit this. Is there an explanation as to why this doesn't always work? Brightkingdom (talk) 13:03, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- Ah, that explains the example I gave above. The red-linked "x" appears when the (disambiguation) redirect has not yet been created. I created Rivand (disambiguation) when it appeared red in the preview. When you encounter a case where the (disambiguation) redirect doesn't yet exist, you should create it. —ShelfSkewed Talk 13:47, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- Bingo. That's genius. It had occurred to me that that was the case, but I was unsure whether I should start making redirects. The only ones I've "created" are those left behind by page moves, by default. Brightkingdom (talk) 13:54, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Autopatrolled
[edit]Hi Brightkingdom, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.
Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.
Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! – Joe (talk) 12:47, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the consideration; it means a lot to me. I do believe there is some room for improvement before I could be considered a decent page reviewer. I have a huge appreciation for what those with your responsibilities do; I'm certain it's a never-ending task to ensure non-encyclopedic content is filtered out before it gets a lot of traction.
- I've learned some valuable lessons along the way from editors like yourself, and I have every expectation I have more to learn. I'm about 35% through my self-appointed task of touching every article concerned with the political geography of Iran. Well, except for the mass-created articles on villages that are pretty much orphaned out! I have a life.
- I can't think of a better way to spend my twilight years than improving a small corner of the resource I didn't know I was looking for in 1967.
- Thanks again. Brightkingdom (talk) 13:49, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Same?
[edit]Is Rezvanshahr, Yazd the same as Majumard? 115.188.140.167 (talk) 09:50, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- The Rezvanshahr article appears to cover the same topic. There is no sourced information in the arctice, rendering it pointless; it would nowadays not be accepted. The solution would be to self-delete my own article, replace the information on the Rezvanshahr page with my own, and then move the page to the new name Majumard.
- Rezvanshahr, Yazd was a neighborhood of Ashkezar and, therefore, doesn't appear in the census as a separately enumerated "village." Elevating a neighborhood to a city (municipality) is extremely rare in Iran, whereas it is much more common to convert villages to cities. Brightkingdom (talk) 12:25, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Question regarding adding citation of census data.
[edit]Hi, I am new to Wikipedia and have a question regarding how you add citations of official census data. Specifically, I found 2016 census data for Koreyt-e Borumi using the page on Persian wikipedia. I would like to add the citation but I am having a bit of confusion about how to do so. I would appreciate any clarification you could provide. Achmed122 (talk) 18:01, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
- I have updated the Koreyt-e Borumi article with the current information for 2016 (and made other revisions that are common to pages of this type). There are a total of 91 spreadsheets used as references throughout the Iran pages, and you may copy them from appropriate places. There is a spreadsheet for each of 31 provinces for three censuses, but please be careful to use the correct spreadsheet reference for the article being revised. Be sure to change the access-date parameter within the text of the reference to correspond to the date you consulted the source. Good luck with your editing! Pa Sefid

- In 2020, the villages of Abbasabad-e Hur (عباس آباد هور), Hajazi (Hassan Jahazi) (حسن جهازی), Hur-e Dekan (هور دکان), Hur-e Zanjiri (هور زنجیری), Pa Sefid, and Tolombeh-ye Javadani (تلمبه جاودانی) were merged to form the new city of Hur-e Pa Sefid.[1] Arman.Farsi57 (talk) 18:46, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- What is the problem? Do you need more resources? Arman.Farsi57 (talk) 19:36, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- I added the source of the news, which is the official newspaper of the Islamic Republic of Iran to announce all kinds of laws and about the merger of several villages and the formation of this city, as a source. However, I live here and accept my words on English Wikipedia or not by you. There is no change in reality. Arman.Farsi57 (talk) 19:47, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- I will try to rectify the situation by checking the source you found. In any case, the source, if it is explicit, must be archived. Please be patient as I create the correct pages to reflect the changes involved. These changes are usually (but not always) available from qavanin.ir, rc.majlis.ir, lamtakam.com, dotic.ir, dolat.ir, solh.ir, etc. IRNA sometimes cannot be archived; same for IRIB, Farsnews, Mehrnews, etc. Brightkingdom (talk) 20:23, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, so I figured out the error. The evidence was already available in my original citation for the formation of Hur District, wherein Hur-e Pa Sefid is mentioned as a village (not yet a city) by its full name. Your RRK reference is useful (it supports the formation of the district), but it does not mention the formation of the city, which was after the 2016 census. I will repair and keep your reference as additional support for the district and it will be moved upward to a different spot.
- I can't find anywhere a government document that supports the formation of the city. This is not common, but it happens. I was able to find a better reference from Khabar Farsi that refers to the actual villages that merged to form the city of Hur-e Pa Sefid. The original source I used was not good enough, on second thought, but the new reference states explicitly the villages involved in the merger.
- I will rectify the pages soon. I appreciate you attention to this, but please allow me to repair this area of Faryab County. Thank you. Brightkingdom (talk) 21:59, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, now I see the mention of the formation of the city in the RRK document. It does not mention the villages merged to form the city, but this is not a problem because it is supported by the Khabar Farsi document. Thank you. Brightkingdom (talk) 22:08, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Please decapitalize "romanized"
[edit]Hi Brightkingdom, I noticed you recently made an edit to the Yekkeh Soud-e Sofla article in which you moved alternative names to a footnote [1]. Thank you—that's a good improvement. But I also noticed that in doing so you recapitalized the word romanized which I had just decapitalized [2]. The word romanized, meaning 'to write in Latin letters', should not be capitalized: see the romanization article, Merriam-Webster, and MOS:ANGLO-: "Romanize, Latinize, and related words are often lowercased in a linguistic context in particular ..." I have been gradually working to decapitalize the word romanized in articles about Iranian places for years. I see that you are also working in this area, so it would be helpful to have your support here, rather than us working against each other. —Bkell (talk) 15:11, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
- I'm actually very glad you brought this up. I was in favor of decapitalization from the beginning, but since I began working on this seemingly endless but nonetheless fascinating project, the amount of capitalization of "romanized" far exceeded the otherwise. So I stuck with that for no other reason than being sort of on autopilot as I continually crawl through the 9,500 pages I've improved.
- Tell you what: how about I remedy on my next round and you can spend your valuable time on something a bit more worthy. I'll be making one last intense pass through everything I've worked on the last two years and will take care of the decapitalization as part of the iterative process of taming this beast as a whole.
- Thoughts? Brightkingdom (talk) 15:36, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
- Happy to hear we're in agreement here. A common editing pattern for me, when I have a few minutes, is just to click the "Random article" link and see if I can find some little things to improve in the article that pops up. I am aware of the capitalization of romanized in articles about Iranian places only because there are so many of them! I'll probably continue to do what I've been doing, but I'd be happy to start seeing Iranian articles in which I don't have to fix the word romanized. Thanks for your help, and keep up the good work! —Bkell (talk) 20:42, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back to me so soon. The articles I've worked on will all eventually contain lowercase "romanization", so by the end of summer (theoretically!) there will be 9,500 of these pages that won't require your input in that regard. Be warned there are probably another 20 to 30K articles that have the problem we're discussing. But honestly, there is a heck of a lot wrong with those articles (virtually all villages) that are way beyond any self-respecting Wikipedian to remedy. I mean, I have a life! Cheers. [edit]Please do not move a page to a title that is harder to follow, or move it unilaterally against naming conventions or consensus, as you did to Biabanak Rural District. This includes making page moves while a discussion remains underway. We have some guidelines to help with deciding what title is best for a subject. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Thank you. Dl2000 (talk) 02:23, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
- My work with the administrative divisions of Iran has revealed a large number of inconsistencies in regard to the transliteration of Persian toponyms, both in page titles and in the text. One of the primary reasons that this has happened is because the transliteration of Persian into English (and most other languages) has several solutions, none of which has been globally agreed upon as the correct method.
- I discovered over the course of time that there has been no consensus in Wikipedia for local transliteration either, particularly because the many editors on the pages I've worked on come from diverse backgrounds. Perhaps this is a wider subject for another day and something in which I would like to participate.
- That being said, I've tried wherever possible to hew as closely as I can to certain patterns and taught myself over the last two years to read Persian script, both for identifying necessary information in Persian government sources and articles and to try to understand how it is that Wikipedia in general approaches some of the thorny properties of transliteration based on previous use.
- I've been bold or cautious when I thought either approach would be warranted, and had been thinking that I was on the right track; but I get the sense I've inadvertently ruffled feathers for perhaps good reasons, and it's not my intention to do so. I can state with near certainty that the 900 articles I have produced are consistent with the majority of transliterations that exist, and maybe the moving of existing articles will require more thought than I had realized.
- So, I will ask this question: being that I am more confident about some moves more than others, should I move an indeterminate number of articles back to their most recent names, and allow the moves about which I am close to 100% confident to stand?
- I'm content if I don't make as many moves as I have, since I have plenty of work remaining that doesn't involve moving anything. I've been trying to herd cats a lot of the time; perhaps I've been too aggressive, and that was not my intention. I'm devoted to making around 10,000 pages concerning this fascinating area the best place to go on the planet for English-speakers on Iran's administrative divisions. I certainly don't want to rock the boat since I spend around 60 hours a week editing here and have made a considerable difference.
- Thanks for the heads up, and please advise. Brightkingdom (talk) 12:23, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
- Took a bit of time, but now have a chance to follow this up. The key issue is "no consensus in Wikipedia for local transliteration", therefore article titles should not be changed without some clear support or consensus for an English naming. You could first review these - Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Iran/Archive 2#Geographical names in Iran; Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Persian has a transliteration table and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Iran contains some general guidance. But before changing names around, you may want to start discussions at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names) and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Iran as there probably needs a clearer consensus of what common names or transliterations should apply for places in Iran. Dl2000 (talk) 18:43, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply, and I really do appreciate your input. The issue has been one of the biggest stumbling blocks to the work I'm trying to do, and the reason I taught myself to read Persian well enough to verify toponyms in the first place. The effort has paid off in finding references online, and I've been gratified that that part works very well for the hundreds I've been able to locate.
- I've looked extensively at the links you provided and unfortunately, they are not definitive either; and it's not because people aren't trying to make some sense of the transliteration ambiguities. Part of the problem is related to the way English-speakers spell a wide variety of vowel sounds, whose omission in Persian script is knowable only to Persian speakers.
- The vast majority of the pages that I've been editing were produced by a single user whose history is interesting in its own right; however, the user relied upon a source for transliteration whose template is now slated for removal, and hundreds of them in retrospect should have had different titles from inception.
- Your advice is sound. Perhaps the wider issue, after my experience, is involvement somehow in starting a discussion about the possibility of developing a sort of "Wiki Persian Transliteration Standard," at least for place names.
- I've done the best I can do for now. Moving forward, I won't move anything without a 100% solid reason. There are so many more pages that need to be moved, that maybe the best idea is to make a running list as I go and present them in a batch request without doing anything unless there is consensus. There is enough to do without moving pages
- I've been too bold; my apologies. Brightkingdom (talk) 19:01, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
