Correct details

The new sequal OVA of "Higurashi no naku koro ni" is titled "Higurashi no naku koro ni Rei" NOT "Higurashi no naku koro ni Chikai" the official site states it is titled "Rei", it is mentioned nowhere that it is called "Chikai". Also the OVA has now been released and in the Opening credits, the title song, sung by "Eiko Shimamiya" is listed as "Super scription of data" NOT "Chikai". The problem is that there is a source from the National Institutes of Health that says it is, which you removed. If you have reliable sources that say it's non-toxic it should be added to show that there is a difference in opinion on the issue. Please do not remove the sourced claim of toxicity. Re: edit to SRI International

My edit was constructive. You should put it back, or act on it. Or do something else, if that's the officially preferred way to handle a case like this. Nothing in the rest of the paragraph says anything about the subject of the heading which is correctly defined in the first sentence; it's all about clairvoyance and telepathy, nothing about psychokinesis. I for one prefer having some notation inline with the text I'm reading to point out that there's a problem with it.

As you can see, I'm not in the mood to be diplomatic, but I'm not argumentative or aggressive either. I am getting a little tired of the bureaucracy on Wikipedia, and the really bad grammar on most of the article pages. I guess that's one of the places where a professionally reviewed encyclopedia like Britannica has an advantage. On the upside, I like that if I find something wrong I can correct it. . . or at least tag it. Right?? OK, so I guess I am a little annoyed. I wonder if you're annoyed by some of the human-but-not-productive entanglements around here, too. Like, say, vandalism, which it appears is what you were going after; and that's good. Hi! I think you misunderstood my edit as vandalism, I was checking out Special:LongPages, and this article drew my attention, as it was surprisingly on 2nd place with more than 400kb content. The I saw that article was vandalized, filled with the same paragraph "over 9000" times, so I cut it off. I wasn't going to mention it, but you continue systematically not to cite me as the creator of articles you nominate for DKYs. While I may not expand the articles as much as you do, I spend time writing stubs, adding nicely formatted references, and frequently putting the germ of the sense of the person (when I don't actually write a full article, which I sometimes do). So, since there is a place for the creator, not just the expander, of an article in the DYK template, it would be appreciated if you would put my username there when you nominate an article I created, even if the creation has just slipped out of the five day window (I don't think the window applies to who is listed in the nomination, anyway).

Capitalization

Hi Alansohn. I noticed you uncapitalized the "The"s from "The Associated Press" and "The New York Herald Tribune" in the article on William Jorden. Wikipedia's own manual of style is silent on this (I think), and this article (which uses a reasonable style guide itself—The New York Time's own) uses capital "The"s mid-sentence for both organizations. Under the career section of the Judy Blume page, the controversial issues listed for Deenie/Then Again Maybe I Won't and Forever were listed as "ion" and, well, nothing respectively. Unless there were issues concerning the portrayal of ions in two of Blume's works, fixing that seems plenty constructive. I left a clear edit summary as to why I made that edit. It was POV-pushing for Linux, and contained innacurate information. I noticed you have some anti-anonymous propaganda on your user page. Please don't allow your prejudism towards anonymous editors to drive your edit decisions. Odd vandalism/reversion/vandalism/ editing pattern?

There have been a few odd revisions to Christian Dior today all from one user - I've reversed them all, but looking in the edit history, they were bizarre. The page was vandalised, reverted, then vandalised again and left for someone to deal with. Anyway it seemed like it should be drawn to someone more in charge's attention and I didn't want to assume a role that probably wasn't mine, I'd likely have done the wrong thing anyway. But maybe a friendly heads-up about correct editing from a mod/mod-type on the disruptive editor's Me Page would be in order? Alansohn protection for the SDA cult

Mark Beers

Hi Alansohn

As you can see from the history of the Mark Beers page and the history of the Mark H. Beers page, you elected to create a new article rather than expand a stub (a stub which, in fact, had a talk page with additional resources and a number of key biographical details to be added to the articles) that was clearly in existence. Even if you believe (in this case, I don't see any support for the idea) that per Wikipedia naming convention, "Mark H. Beers" is the appropriate name, a page move and/or redirect is a better way to address such a view than to duplicate an entry.

I should have also listed Crib & Bib (I did on some but forgot on others).. So it should be infant, crib, bib, baby monitor & SIDS. 2 are very important when it comes to SIDS, and well SIDS is important all on its own as so many people aren't even aware of it.. baby sling is an accessory (also a safty thing) & so are bibs. Everything goes with Baby Showers, as the people who are buying something for a gift should be informed on the best/safest product. As a bad buy can cause harm or possibly SIDS (baby crib mattress for example)...

I'm not trying to cause harm. Just trying to make it easier to find things (more so the important one that are related)... When I was finished with Babies (saftey for the most part), I was going to start on Security Cameras as they need updating & then onto pets.

I have a list of all the pages I did change so I could go back & tweek them as needed. If you want me to undo what I did, I will, or tweek them so its a better fit (maybe I should just use infant, baby shower, & SIDS), I can do that too.

Really, just because you don't like an edit, you're going to call it vandalism? Because I very much doubt you can prove, from an objective point of view, that the change I made had made that page any worse. Sure, maybe to your point of view, but I don't think it had that much more merit before my edit, than after.

In that case, wouldn't you just call it another pointless edit, to an already pointless page?

Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News Hello everyone, and welcome to the February 2017 GOCE newsletter. The Guild has been busy since the last time your coordinators sent out a newsletter! >>> Sign up for the March Drive! <<< December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all who took part. January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words). February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining March 2016 backlog and January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive. Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated! Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Jonesey95 on their well-deserved induction into the Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone." Meters, constructive editors add content and provide sources for articles; disruptive editors template the regulars, add useless tags and blindly revert. Look at my edit history and take a gander at what you have done to this and other articles. I am constructive. I check for missing sources, and often I then I attempt to find the missing sources. As I said in my first edit summary, I was checking the sourcing in this section. Since you jumped in in the middle of my work you don't know what I was going to do with this section. I don't always add sources, I don't always do it immediately when I do add them, and sometimes I cannot find sources at all, so the tags I leave but don't fix are still constructive. You, in this case, blindly went in and removed perfectly valid tags without adding sources. How is that constructive? I've been able to find these with trivial effort, and if you'd devote as much time to adding sources, rather than tags and templates, this would be a far better article. Meters, all I have available is the edits actually made to the article. I added or updated about a dozen sources; you added about a dozen tags and not one sources. On the other hand, during this same time period you've edited articles for Bill Britton, Michael Cusick, Kevin O'Connor, Louis Tobacco and John Wolyniec, where you added a whole bunch of tags, while the number of sources added stands at zero. Please recognize that you are free to demonstrate a genuine effort to improvement by adding sources to the articles for these and other alumni of Monsignor Farrell High School. You're obviously quicker at finding refs than I am, and I'm purposely staying away from these while you work. When you're done I'll check if the refs still need to be copied to the individuals' articles. We each work our own way. I work my way through a section checking all the refs, tagging as I go. The tags on the subjects' articles were part of my process. I check the school article, tagging tentries in bunches so I don't have dozens of edits to the school article. The subjects' articles get tagged if necessary while I have the school article open in another edit window. When I'm done checking the school article, if I'm going to look for and add refs I then do so, updating any subjects' articles I can at the same time. Meters (talk) 19:48, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Meters, in terms of Bill Britton, a source from the school probably meets the terms of WP:SELFPUB in this context. I didn't use any self-published sources in my edits to the article for the school. March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

• Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
• Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
• 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
• Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Hello, Alansohn. I see that you are the main editor of this article. I'm writing to let you know that there has been content removal, re Sarah Dawson, by someone who seems to believe that she should be the subject of the article about a neighbouring township. In my opinion, the item should have been tagged or, better still, a question raised on the talk page so that someone who knows about the subject can resolve it. I reverted his edit but he has reinstated it because I apparently don't know what I'm doing. I don't wish to get involved in an edit war with someone like that so could you please take a look at the content and decide which article Sarah Dawson should be in (possibly both, as I have tried to point out). New Jersey county population estimates

Hi Alansohn, I think we went through a similar discussion but on a slightly different citation issue a couple of years ago. First of all, sorry I left the stray "ref" after the "PopEst" name tag - that caused a brief bit of confusion on the Bergen County article, I see. But the bigger picture is that it's less helpful to keep citing just two successive years' population estimates for counties because of the grossly high amount of statistical variation that occurs between two years, amplified by the fact that the Census Bureau keeps re-updating (and therefore changing) these cumulative estimates for each of the years following the decennial census figures. It also makes for a bit harder work for year-to-year changes, and leaves out the big picture, namely the estimates trend over multiple years, which carries a smaller statistical error. I understand your concern about WP:CITEVAR, so I am going to change the definition of PopEst for all 21 New Jersey counties. Best, Castncoot (talk) 15:04, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

• Castncoot, there are three links from the Census Bureau that are relevant here; 1) Quick Facts (see link 1), 2) PEPANNRES (see link 2) and 3) PEPANNCHG (see link 3). 1) We already have Quick Facts in the articles, the QF link is self-updating on an annual basis and the percentage change from 2010 to the latest estimate is shown. 2) PEPANNRES shows the 2010 base data and estimates as of July 1 for each census year through the current year; the link is year specific and needs to be updated annually. 3) PEPANNCHG shows the estimates as of July 1 for the latest year and for the previous year, along with the change from the previous year in number and percent, along with rankings of all counties for current year and previous year plus rankings of the change in both number and percentage; the link is year specific and needs to be updated annually.
  The QF link needs no fixing and has been left unchanged. I had replaced the PEPANNRES link with the PEPANNCHG, I just screwed up on using the correct link. You changed all of my (improperly formatted) PEPANNCHG references to point to (correctly formatted) PEPANNRES links. My position here is that the only meaningful data in PEPANNRES is the current year estimate, already available in QF, while adding the estimates for previous years that aren't needed; PEPANNCHG includes the same current / prior year estimates, but also includes data on rankings and changes that isn't available in either QF or PEPANNRES.
  As an example, I changed the Warren County, New Jersey article to use PEPANNCHG (instead of PEPANNRES). I look forward to your feedback as to the better option, but as I see it PEPANNCHG is a genuine improvement while PEPANNRES adds nothing to the article. Alansohn (talk) 17:40, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

Alansohn, the position I'm taking is that PEPANNRES adds more information per the multiple-year trend (and it does include the current year's data as well), but more importantly, greater statistical integrity, because the Census Bureau keeps annually retroactively updating all of the past years' post-Census estimates. Quoting only two years' figures introduces great volatility and statistical error into the mix and could mislead a reader into thinking that a county is on a growing trend when in fact this may be just a statistical quirk between two years (that might be reverted anyway when the Bureau readjusts its figures the following year). I do see the rankings in PEPANNCHG, but I believe that this is a secondary fact which a reader could verify if they didn't believe the statement in the text simply by looking at the PEPANNRES table. My greater concern is not misleading the reader by virtue of statistical issues. If displaying the rankings explicitly is that important to you, perhaps we can add on PEPANNCHG as well? West Essex High School

I removed Will Wosilius from the notable faculty section. The IC says he played college football at Syracuse in 66 and 67 and then 3 years for the St Louis Cardinals in the NFL.

The first claim is half wrong and the second totally wrong. Wosilius was selected[3] in the 1967 NFL draft in April of that year. So he was definitely not at Syracuse in 67.

Secondly NFL.com profile at NFL.com has Wosilius not playing any seasons in the NFL on his player page.

Thirdly this article[4]] of which just enough can be made out of it, that Wosilius was cut by the Cardinals before the 1968 season and that he had suffered a season ending knee injury in the first game of the 1967 NFL preseason.

WP:NGRIDIRON says an American football player is notable if they played one regular season NFL game. The things I cite above say he didn't.

If I wanted to pile on, I could not his lack of a WP article or that his Linkedin profile (Not a RS for establishing notability) says two NFL seasons not three. Cs california, again, kudos for your efforts to improve these articles and to tolerate the bullshit from BMK. He is the king of the edit warriors and the article owner par excellence, and loves to claim that others are committing sins he regularly violates, often on a daily basis. He is an editor who is a multi-time loser for edit warring, including in the very recent past, and who constantly gets caught with his pants down. Sadly, he has spent so much time at ANI and has brown-nosed admins so thoroughly into the deepest nooks and crannies, that his routinely blatant violations of policy are written off with "warnings" or simply ignored.

May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

• Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
• 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
• Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
• Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Tagging "comprised of" in quotations

OK, it's time to do something about our difference of opinion about having a hidden sic tag on "comprised of" in quotations. For a while, I was content just to let you have your way on the many articles you watch, while I tagged other articles, but now that you seem to be stalking me and effectively neutralizing my work to add these tags, it's time to get others involved.

My thought is to put an RfC about this specific issue on the talk page for the sic template, in the Style and Naming RfC category. The question would be does having a hidden sic tag on the phrase "comprised of" in quotations help or hurt the encyclopedia?

• My preference would be to do nothing in terms of quotations, though I can't stop you from starting an RfC. There are thousands of sources across Wikipedia that use the term "comprised of" in a quotation taken straight from a source or from the title of a source. You are the only person who benefits from the use of the sic tag in these quotations. We could ask the community about whether or not nothing needs to be done, but the simpler solution would be to leave the text unchanged in the first place. While I fervently disagree about the need to fix a non-problem that is a commonly accepted and widely used feature of the English language, I have no objection to your removing, rewording or recasting uses of "comprised of" in the text of articles, any more than I would object to the senseless fixing of split infinitives or sentences ending a preposition with. There's just no need to "fix" quotations simply as part of your self-imposed Sisyphean task, as they literally ain't broke. Alansohn (talk) 03:24, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Question on bus route changes

Have a question that I'm not sure of how to handle. Yesterday, MTA Maryland started their BaltimoreLink program, which drastically changed routes in the Baltimore area. From this, ALL of the buses have been renumbered, and a vast majority were re-routed, or shortened, etc. As a result the current articles on the MTA bus routes are no longer valid. I'm going to work on creating new articles for these new routes (as I can), in the meantime what should be done to the now historical and no longer used routes? Oh boy. Considering that about 95% of the bus routes changed, and almost all changed routes #'s, except one it's a mish-mash. Here is the MTA Maryland site, and here is the info on each individual route. Some routes have been split in 3 or 4 different routes completely. WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

Does DemocraticLuntz sound like he's going to revert his edits for densities in infoboxes on city pages? He messed up TONS of them. It's always been my preference and understanding from others that the infobox is for official population and area measurements at each Census for American cities, and that if you want to include annexations and Census Bureau population estimates that that can be done in "geography" and "demographic" sections within the page. I honestly don't know why he'd erase existing info that people worked to calculate for a far less accurate "auto" template. Is there a way to make the template more precise? How are we going to remedy this if he doesn't revert his unnecessary edits? --Criticalthinker (talk) 10:13, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

• Criticalthinker, I agree and that's exactly what I've done, which is to use data (and calculations) direct from the United States Census Bureau. LuckyLouie, the article is a fascinating one, but I'm not sure that the expansion is adequate to meet the 5x standard to meet DYK eligibility. The article is now 10,286 characters, just more than double the 4,982 when you started the expansion or only double. List of People from Newark, New Jersey aka Michael Brown

I'm not trying to sound snarky but HIS Wikipedia article clearly states he's from Newark and yes I know that cannot be used as a valid reference but since there is no citation in that article that confirms he was born in Newark would that part of the article be subject to deletion/removal too? YborCityJohn, his article claims that he's from Newark, without any reliable and verifiable sources to support the claim; yes, there were two references on the sentence in his article, but neither link mentioned Newark. The absence of a reference to support the claim led me to spend a lot of time doing Google searches, none of which ended up finding a source to support his being from Newark. It may be true, but I (and anyone reading his article or the people from Newark article) would have no way to confirm that. As such, the connection between Brown and Newark should either be removed or, at a minimum, be tagged as requiring a citation.

Re Beaches vs. shore communities

You know what? I noticed both categories on the Margate City, NJ page, so I figured to make them all consistent by adding it, since Ventnor lies on the beach. However, those two categories are basically the same. The only entry I noticed that wasn't an actual municipality in the Beaches of Atlantic County, NJ category is Chicken Bone Beach which is just a section of AC. I support merging these two together, as well as with the other counties that lie on the ocean. User:Hmains created the beaches one, as he is known to create so many sub categories, some necessary and some unnecessary. Hope your summer is going well and thanks for reaching out! Tinton5, though I think that there is a difference. Margate City is a shore community and a beach, and for all such places it seems unnecessary to include both categories. On the other hand, Chicken Bone Beach is a named beach within a shore community. Are there shore communities that have no beaches? Al Di Meola 1: Preliminary discussion

I know that you're eager to discuss my mistakes. I look forward to learning from your many years of experience. Now that the emotion of the moment is over, we can get to work. After reverting my edits, your accusations were:

• "extreme concerns demonstrated here"
• "pattern of removing sourced content and categories"
• "pattern of butchery"
• "obvious failure to understand basic policy"

On that last point, you claim I lack the ability to sign a Talk Page and that this is indicative of my extreme incompetence, "the tip of the iceberg". I do have that ability. Proof can be found on my Talk page and the Talk Pages of others where I have signed my posts properly. Although you have only my word for it, when I edit I use macros that are triggered by groups of key presses, but I didn't have that program with me at the time I wrote to you. I was away from my usual computer and workspace. I had recently finished extensive editing on another article that was written in a slapdash manner in broken English. I was about to go to bed when an email about your revert popped up on my laptop. It was 2 am. I couldn't remember how to sign a post because for so long I had been using a macro. Maybe when you're my age, you'll understand how details and trivialities can be forgotten at a moment like that.

Per the rules and procedures of Wikipedia, I want to discuss individual edits rather than resort to barely explained, massive reverts. We can discuss the rest of that iceberg you mentioned.

You were right that there is a conflict with birthplace. That's something we'll have to resolve given that our sources disagree.

Your edit summary reads, "rv extensive removal of sourced content and unjustified removal of categories." I've already discussed the categories, and that is connected to the matter of birthplace. When that is resolved, the categories can be resolved.

Your other point is removal of sourced content. That comes later in the article, but there are preliminary but important points to make. After I changed the content that was sourced to All About Jazz, I explained my edits in the edit summary and on the Talk Page. The gist is that AAJ profiles are often, if not always, copied and pasted from the musician's web site, so that web site should be sourced, not AAJ. The AAJ profiles, of course, have no author or date attached, which is true of information on many musicians' web sites. That information is often promotional. I replaced the AAJ material with reliable, sourced material. If you want to address this subject now before moving on to others, that's OK. Is there other sourced content that I deleted unjustifiably?

Al Di Meola 2: Lede, first graph

My understanding is that the article should begin with the full, formal name of the subject, then the birth date in parentheses. The birthplace either shouldn't come next or doesn't have to, esp. given that it's already in the infobox. I'm not sure if this use is de jure or de facto. In the infobox and text, big cities are piped as are states and popular countries.

There's some question about whether Latin jazz is an appropriate genre for Di Meola. For example, AllMusic doesn't use that classification. It uses as genres jazz, pop/rock, and international. I don't know what "international" means in this context. AM then lists styles: "fusion, guitar virtuoso, jazz rock, world fusion, contemporary jazz, guitar jazz, jazz instrument, South American traditions, and tango". I don't know who at AM assigns these categories. Greg Prato's biography at AllMusic, the first source in the first graph, uses the terms "acoustic Latin music", "jazz fusion", "acoustic-based world music", and "Latin infused", but he doesn't use Latin jazz, which I associate with other kinds of musicians. I believe that is one change I made. Maybe you can give me reasons why you think he is a Latin jazz guitarist. The popular album he made with Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin has elements of flamenco. Wikipedia, in an article that someone considers Good, calls de Lucia flamenco, classical, and jazz.

The second source in the first graph is Music Feeds. I'm not sure that's the best, most impartial source that exists, given, for example, that Di Meola is called "a bona fide guitar hero, perennial poll winner, and virtuoso of the highest order." Sounds more like a love letter than an encyclopedia entry. I'm not even sure what "guitar hero is", bona fide or not. I'm not clear on the difference between a virtuoso and one of the highest order.

I'm not fond of the term "fanbase" because it's the sort of slang one finds on TV, in newspapers, Rolling Stone, and Downbeat. Per Wikipedia documentation regarding formal tone, I prefer something like "fans around the world". Regardless, it isn't the sort of sentence I would write because it sounds like cheerleading, and encyclopedias don't make good cheerleaders. Many people have fans all over the world. It's a cliché that says almost nothing. It isn't something I would say in an article, let alone in the lede. I suspect "fanbase" should be two words and that "solid" fanbase is redundant. We can talk about the use of slang versus formal tone, or we can talk about the use of slang as a sign of weak, lazy prose, or both.

I have doubts, too, about the accuracy of "earned him success." I wonder if that could be better phrased. Earned? A problematic word if there ever was one. The album referred to, Friday Night in San Francisco, came out in 1980, so it isn't a good summary. It's simply mentioning one album. His career is much more than that.

I can't find anywhere in the Prato source that says Di Meola is an Italian with roots in Cerreto Sannita. What source was used for that?

Cheap shot. I didn't sign properly because I'm away from my computer and didn't have my usual tools. What started as a simple edit here and there (not the Al Di Meola article, another) turned out to be a mess by someone who could barely write English. As I was going to bed, an email popped up. It's very late where I am.

Let's start with your massive revert. If every one of my edits is wrong, I want to see arguments for every one. Undoing all those edits at once is bad form. Although I made many changes, I submitted them piecemeal. Any of them could have been analyzed via the history and changed individually with explanations. If my changes are unsound, I'll hear the arguments. It's a chance for me to learn. So let's stop the quick judgments and the melodrama.

I have a book in front of me, the Great Jazz Guitarists by Scott Yanow, which I cited. It says Bergenfield. AllMusic says Jersey City. How do I resolve that? I trust Scott Yanow, but I know he's made mistakes. He writes for AllMusic, which makes many mistakes. I don't consider Bergenfield versus Jersey City a subject that warrants the accusation of butchery. I'm OK with mistakes. Maybe this is a subject for debate where sources disagree. I need to know that. Naturally I would remove the categories that referred to Jersey City. I find many categories that are wrong, many that overlap, and many that are pointless. Of what practical use is "Living people"? What reader is going to consult that? Categories can be subjective. "20th century musicians" is another category so large that it serves no purpose. It's just one big info-dump. How can person be from two places? When categories overlap, I use the more specific one (jazz guitarist versus jazz musician). Sometimes categories exist without being cited or even mentioned in the text. Sometimes categories raise problems that can't be resolved. Often the list of categories is too long and done in a slapdash manner. Sometimes reducing them seems like it can only be a benefit.

I don't believe I have been reckless, but if I have, I'm willing to correct it. My purpose is always to improve Wikipedia, not to shore up my ego or any other kind of self-aggrandizement. I'm certainly not going to vandalize anyone's work. Contrary to this post, I don't have strong feelings about the jazz articles I've been working on. In fact, subjects I care most about I avoid because I want to remain impartial. Nothing here is life or death to me. My biggest complaints are about drive-by edits and the poor quality of the music articles, which don't seem to be done by regular editors but by anonymous readers. I know that's how WP works. But the laziness, the refusal to cite, or to cite properly, the unwillingness to learn even the basics about Wikipedia documentation, and then to engage in irrational debate based on nothing more than "I want it this way." I learned to document sources a v. long time ago when I was thirteen. What's with these readers?

I don't consider any Wikipedia entry mine. Every article is everyone else's. There's no private property here. It's a bad idea for editors to list articles on their user pages as if they owned them. I have created a small group of entries. I consider none of them mine. I try to build a good foundation. I want to learn from my mistakes. I don't mind making them because that's often how I learn best. What annoys me, besides what I've stated, is the frequent thoughtless edits. When someone makes an edit without explaining it to me, that's annoying, especially when their change makes the article worse, because then my hard efforts are erased. I would much rather see a change with an explanation than a massive wipe. It's late here. I regret any impropriety real or perceived. But it can't be that all my edits were wrong. They were certainly well-intended.

As stated at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, "Editors must take particular care when adding information about living persons to any Wikipedia page.[a] Such material requires a high degree of sensitivity, and must adhere strictly to all applicable laws in the United States, to this policy, and to Wikipedia's three core content policies: Neutral point of view (NPOV), Verifiability (V), No original research (NOR). We must get the article right." As

There's nothing there that I disagree with. Nor have I violated those principles, as far as I know, as least not intentionally. I've been more careful with BLPs that many of the people who contribute to Wikipedia. I'll go out on a limb and say that every article I've worked on I've improved. My goal isn't to finish them. My goal is to move them forward. I know that as time goes by, other people will edit the articles and change what I've done. Wikipedia belongs to everyone and therefore no one.

stated at Category:Living people, which you feel to be "pointless", the category is intended to aid in monitoring WP:BLP and that "This category exists to help Wikipedia editors improve the quality of biographies of living persons by ensuring that the articles maintain a neutral point of view, maintain factual accuracy, and are properly sourced."

While you deride the category system, it is a fundamental mechanism for editors and readers to navigate across articles with common shared characteristics.

My suggestion is that you edit the content of articles, where there appears to be some level of competency, but to leave categories alone, where it seems that your lack of understanding and appreciation of the system leads to needless butchery. I will restore a version of the article that includes all of your edits to the content of the article along with all of the categories that existed before your recent edits. I didn't deride the system. Please read more carefully. Look at the text. I said, "many categories that are wrong, many that overlap, and many that are pointless." I find entries that are overrun with categories. You know what I'm talking about. I'm sure you have the same complaints that I do. I don't dislike every category. If someone wants a list of American jazz guitarists, they can find that. That's useful. I understand how entries and categories intertwine. I didn't say all categories are pointless. I didn't even say that Living Persons is pointless, though I may have implied it through a rhetorical question. I did ask about its usefulness. Now, if there are technical reasons for Living Persons as a category, which you seem to imply, I didn't know that. "This category exists to help Wikipedia editors". How? Editors are always trying to improve BLPs. Most of the articles I work on have maintenance templates. If it has a BLP template, then I know that person is alive. If there is no death date, then of course that is another way. Or if I'm familiar with the name. Or if I have used sources that tell me the person is alive. There are many ways for me to tell, not simply the bracketed category at the bottom. But, as I said, if there are technical reasons, having to do with programming, then that's another subject. In your mind criticism of certain categories equals dismissal of all of them, "the system". In your mind, the deletion of one edit equals butchery. In your mind, a mistake in signing one post equals "tip of the iceberg" incompetence. I find that kind of hyperbole and accusation irresponsible, even if it is unintentional. You gave me advice. I have advice for you, but I'm keeping it to myself. Thank you for responding. I appreciate all the work you've done, but like the rest of us, you make mistakes.

Pros and cons of 2010 and 2000 census

Living in MA but reached in to NJ for a bit of light editing. I noticed that in NJ, all of the towns and cities I looked at had 2010 and 2000 census demographics. In most MA articles, only 2010. What is your opinion of having information from both censuses (censi?). Just curious. I have no intention of looking up 2000 census information for hundreds of MA towns (nor deleting same from hundreds of NJ towns). David notMD (talk) 15:51, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

Providing the data for both 2010 and 2000 allows the ability for readers to see changes over the decade, not just in terms of population, but in the makeup and characteristics of the municipality. I support the use, which is mixed across articles for places in the United States; some have both, some have only 2010 and there are plenty that only have 2000 details. Williamsburg

Hi, Im Kirias Joel.

I have changed the article about Williamsburg, Brooklyn with the information about satmar rabbi's request to his followers to move out from williamsburg.

The website I cited is "ivelt" but I don't rely on ivelt's accuracy. In the attached link you see a photo of a page in the "Book of speaches" from Rabbi Aron Teitelbaum last month, written by himself. There you see his words to his community to move out to upstate.

These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. Hi Alan, I saw that. He is accurate about his address. I found the family living there in the 1940 census. But he simply got the section of Brooklyn wrong where his old house is located. 698 St. Marks Ave is clearly not in Bedford-Stuyvesant but within the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. See the second paragraph of the Crown Heights webpage: "Crown Heights is bounded by Washington Avenue to the west, Atlantic Avenue to the north, Ralph Avenue to the east, and Empire Boulevard/East New York Avenue to the south." Thank you for the editing job, However their is information that i can give you to make this more accurate. #1 The name of my high school is Monmouth Regional High School in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, #2 After Foot note #4 you deleted that I was named a starter you can refer to New York Times dated August 10th 1977 by writer Michael Katz where you see I made the roster, so if you can right after footnote 4 add He made the roster but then suffered a ruptured appendix... or what ever you fell is appropriate #3 We had two pictures in addition to the one that is up currently that you took down because you wanted to know who the photographer was so we had the photographer email you requesting for them to be put back up because you said we could. I was attempting to edit the page myself but the page was blocked from editing and if you can place the picture of me running out of the tunnel in Tampa which belongs in the "Professional Career section right before in 1983. The other picture is a picture of me in the water where the photographer emailed you letting you that She took the picture which goes right before 'Life after Football". This would be greatly appreciated and is very accurate you also might want to put that I was actually with the Giants from 1977-1978. Another article dated from Michael Katz from The New York Time titled "Kahl-Winter May Walk Into The Giants Starting Spot" Let us know if we can be of any help putting those picture back up and editing the way you see fit would be greatly appreciated. The RfC in question explicitly cites both WP:CITESTYLE -- "While citations should aim to provide the information listed above, Wikipedia does not have a single house style, though citations within any given article should follow a consistent style. A number of citation styles exist including those described in the Wikipedia articles for Citation, APA style, ASA style, MLA style, The Chicago Manual of Style, Author-date referencing, the Vancouver system and Bluebook." -- and WP:CITEVAR -- "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change.". Both of these guidelines explicitly contradict your claims. If your contribution to this encyclopedia is to violate policy and change citation formats, please help us all.
