Hey, Lectonar I'm very new to Wikipedia and just made 3 edits from which none of them is removed. How many approved edits do I need to make a positive impression on Wikipedia? My purpose in editing on Wikipedia is to give a link to my website but before I want to make a positive impression on Wikipedia with great edits. Can you tell me how much time it will take? --Tech Buy (talk) 05:28, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
- That's difficult to answer...essentially, it's not about the number of edits, but their quality. Please have a read of Wikipedia:About to learn what Wikipedia is, and WP:NOT to learn what it is not. Start editing slowly, and you will learn if Wikipedia is the correct vehicle to post a link to your website. If your (ultimate) intention is just to advertise your website, Wikipedia might not be for you. Lectonar (talk) 09:49, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
Semi-protection request
[edit]Thank you for the semi-protection of Wikipedia:WikiProject Jehovah's Witnesses/Practices of Jehovah's Witnesses. For completeness, can you do the same for Wikipedia:WikiProject Jehovah's Witnesses/Doctrines of Jehovah's Witnesses? That is the other article that was archived when those two articles were merged. It has been considerably less subject to alteration than the other archived article, though that could change. (The two articles were merged in 2007, and the merged article was subsequently split again in 2010.)--Jeffro77 Talk 02:55, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Slowisfastwithcoffee (17:59, 16 December 2023)
[edit]Thank you Lectonar; I'm new to Wikipedia as an editor. I am Canadian and I started my first entry on biographees. I went through all the great Canadian non-fiction books I read this year (I am a big reader) and found that some of the authors who had contributed a lot less or in insignificant ways to Canadian society had entries in Wikipedia, and the reverse was true, too. So I did an entry on an author "Neil Seeman" and that was simple and seemed to go well. (We'll see; it has to be formally approved). One editor properly pointed out that I'd put in too many "promotional" sounding references, which were easy to remove. I have about 10 other Canadian authors I'd like to do bios on. A question for you: for authors, I've found that "notability" is not as simple as for an academic. I think that Wikipedia promotes academics as notable who really aren't. I am a (non-notable) academic and I do not have a Wikipedia profile. I basically feel that Wikipedia puts way to much stock into things like an h-score or an academic title but that's really unfair, especially to authors. There are authors who have made such a huge contribution to Canadian life and letters but they seem to only have a Wikipedia profile if they're academics, too! I'm generalizing but am I seeing things properly? Is there an article I can review on this? Sorry to drone on about this, but I feel that as an academic I have a good insight into this. There's nothing scientific about an h-score; it can be manipulated really easily. Anyway, thank you! I want to keep things balanced, so will also try to write up drafts of Canadian authors from each province and territory. I find eastern-Canadian authors are underrepresented. --Slowisfastwithcoffee (talk) 17:59, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late reply....well, we have WP:AUTHOR...you will have found it. As for the different criteria: Wikipedia has a bias slightly tilted towards science, so academics have an easier time of it. But still, these rules have grown over the years, formed by countless discussion for forming consensus. Wikipedia has a definition of notable that isn't the same as the one used in everyday context; the basic problem for most biographies is the existence (or non-existence) of reliable sources. If it can't be sourced properly, there is no article. As for deep questions like yours: try bringing this up at the village pump, or on the talk-page of Wikipedia:Notability (people). [edit]Hello! I've been working on my sandbox page and recently I've come across an issue where when I use the same citation and different parts of the article, it will list them separately in the references list, even though they are the exact same citation. Hello Lectonar. Thank you for extending your assistance to a new wiki hopefuls like me. I am deeply thankful as I would need all the help for Wikipedia. I would like to start an article for The Kanoo Group. I work in the communication department for this organization and would like to claim this page according to rules by Wikipedia. This page encountered a lot of concerns since it was due to lack of judgement on our part on how to edit a page - and got blocked. Kindly advise on next first steps. --TKG290 (talk) 11:17, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- @TKG290: Would it be about this Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo Group? And you working in the communication department gives a strong conflict of interest. Lectonar (talk) 08:08, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Lectonar, I would like to disclose that I do work for the organization and would like to create the page. It is not Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo Group but only The Kanoo Group. I have read this and would like to be guided - The Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use require that all editors disclose their "employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which they receive, or expect to receive, compensation":

- Editors must disclose their employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any paid contribution to Wikipedia.
- Employer: the person or organization that pays, either directly or through intermediaries, a user to contribute to Wikipedia. Request From Justinbenji (9:12, 27 January 2024)
[edit]Please Lectonar
Kourage Beatz NSI was deleted under G12 and you protected the page for being repeatedly created. I am a wikipedia novice and did not know what to do and I thought using my friends accounts publishing it back and adding these informations would solve the issue. I most say this here, I am not connected to the person, I am his big fan and he is someone that is well respected in the Nigerian music industry and seeing these celebrities talking about him, so I decided to add him to wikipedia without properly knowing how to, so I humbly request for another chance to correct my mistakes. I did my research and found out that Kourage Beatz NSI Who is also known as Skopy Lonky won award at TNMA where the likes of Mr Eazi, Kizz Daniel, Falz, Adekunle Gold etc.[1] have too and the article that was deleted didn't have theses informations. Kourage Beatz NSI have two studio albums Playboy and NEVER CHANGED, JUST GREW UP which featured international producers and artists.[2] [3].
Please I humbly request for unprotection of the page and be given the opportunity to rewrite this article from a neutral point of view and be summited for review. Thank you.

Appeal
[edit]Greetings Lectonar, I write to you to extern my concern in regards to the resolution that you gave to my request for page protection earlier this day [4] suggesting that there may be edit warring taking place. I indeed think edit warring is taking place on the article, alongside what very likely is serious sockpuppetry by an editor that has been proven, uses VPNs[5][6] (compare edits such as [7] and [8], and summaries such as [9] and [10]), which is why I think it is necessary to protect the page (and others may need protection aswell, as per the diffs I've linked above the editor does not show signs of wanting to stop or discuss at all, as you can see in the talk page Im talking to myself[11][12]), I would like that you reconsidered your ruling as this is a very atypical situation. Pob3qu3 (talk) 20:57, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- Not as unusual as you think; there's disagreement on sources, if they are reliable, on how they are read, each side thinks they are in the right. Pages for protection is not the place to decide who exactly is in the right. What the article needs are more eyes; the edit warring noticeboard will provide these. You could also try WP:3O. Regards. Lectonar (talk) 07:00, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply Lectonar, and yeah its not that unusual, nonetheless I think we all agree that it would be better if sockpuppeters and users who do wikilawyering in outright bad faith were more unusual. Pob3qu3 (talk) 21:03, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

Dear Lectonar
I would like to get your assistance and advice after an editor has made overzealous deletion edits, particularly targeted at edits I have made.
On 10 July 2023, Anwegmann wrote on my talk page "Please stop using the conditional tense when writing about footballers. Using "would" instead of the simple past tense of a verb is incorrect in most situations in English. "He would transfer to second-tier side..." is not correct. Rather, it should read "He transferred to second-tier side..."
After thanking him for his advice I corrected some of my grammatical errors and thought nothing of it. After some time has passed it seems some of my grammatical errors have creeped up. This seems to have triggered him and he is currently on a warpath in deleting everything I have touched under the banner of "Improper tense usage". This includes edits that are grammatically correct, properly referenced or even stats that do not have any grammar in them.
There has been no cooperation, civility or good faith shown by him to improve any of the articles I have edited. I am shocked by the sheer callousness and venom Anwegmann has inflicted on me and certainly feel he has a vendetta against me as he is intentionally targeting edits I have made.
I would like to get your advice on what to do.
Regards Kai Lau (talk) 12:58, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- This editor's grammatical issues have been mentioned now by two separate editors, and the inappropriate use of conditional tense has been shown in dozens of articles, along with paragraphs that are awash in severe grammatical errors. I am happy to lay off correcting these edits, if it is a policy-based issue, as I don't want to run counter to the rules and standards of Wikipedia. But the overarching issue I am having is the assumption here that it is seemingly the jobs of other editors to correct grammatical mistakes of this editor, which is not appropriate or representative of good faith. And to paint me as "callous" and "venomous" is unnecessary. The warnings were nearly a year apart, and I have no ill will toward Kai Lau. I just want Wikipedia articles to have proper grammar. That is not callous or vindictive. Needless to say, as well, to describe my edits as "a warpath in deleting everything I have touched" is absurd. This editor has made more than 10,000 edits, and I have reverted five of them because they contained too many grammatical errors for me to fix. I took my own time to fix quietly the issues on six articles, bringing my total interaction with this editor's edits this year to eleven. I am happy to ignore this user in full, if necessary for the peace of the community. But that doesn't change the need for this editor to use proper grammar in their edits. Anwegmann (talk) 15:17, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Kai Lau: please assume good faith towards other editors...it's one of the pillars of Wikipedia. Just having other people correcting grammar mistakes is not a show of bad faith, or an indication of you being followed around. I correct mistakes if I happen to see them while looking at articles, and so does everybody else. And everyone is different: some, like me, tend to gnome around in articles, some like to write articles, some like to find sources for things etc., etc. (see our wikifauna). So relax, try to learn (getting knowledgeable around Wikipedia is a long term process (I have been around for almost 20 years and still learn something new almost daily). But, and that's something to keep in mind, we are all volunteers, and have usually only a limited amount of time. So my advice is: do not take things too personally, always assume good faith and even assume the assumption of good faith. Try to be friendly in giving and receiving advice. @Anwegmann: no, there is no policy forbbding you to correct grammar mistakes, but, keeping in mind our collaborative environemnt here, try to be a bit more friendly in your messages...your last ones to Kai Lau could have been framed a bit less...let's say agressively, and threatening someone to revert each of his edits without even looking at it is no the wikiway. We are in this together, you know, each according to his gifts and possibilities. Lectonar (talk) 07:59, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Dear Lectonar: Thank you for your assistance in being a third party mediator and calming influence. It was due to your intervention that Anwegmann restored some of the edits that I have made. As a well as accepting good faith towards me. Kai Lau (talk) 16:42, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello,
I am an academic in marketing, organisation, and consumer research. When speaking to my students about the potential for independent learning they suggested that I'd investigate the Wikipedia pages of my own domain interests and contribute with what I know.
What I wonder is, is there a robust review process in place for claims I might make, and is it acceptable to make reference to my own work or that of my colleagues? I am new to Wikipedia and am hoping to adhere to what is considered good practice on the website.
All the best /Mikael --Mickifer (talk) 12:35, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Mickifer: Hmm...Essentially, all that Wikipedia is is summarised at our Wikipedia:Five pillars, and what it is not is summarised here. There is not a peer review as such, and all work is done by volunteers. As for referencing your or the works of other experts: these must be or stem from reliable sources. I for one tend to stay away from articles that are of interest to me, or in which I am an expert, as it is often difficult to have the neutral point of view in things we are passionate about. [edit]Hi. I am new on wikipedia. I need to write profile for 3 companies and a biography for a business man. How can I start. Whether I can add a real estate company and skin care company. And what all should be eliminated from the wikipedia content not to get rejected --All About Brands (talk) 22:21, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- That's difficult to answer withiut knowing the subject(s). Article writig is explained here: Help:Your first article, and as you say you have to write said articles, my guess is you will need this too: Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Regards. Lectonar (talk) 09:11, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

- Still, I don't know why there is so much bias by media like New York Post against him. Yes, his action of pulling the fire alarm was indeed stupid mistake, but that doesn't mean you should be harsh on him. We should begin to make sure there is no bias in politics page. (ex. politician, political party) . 174.135.36.220 (talk) 22:43, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Alas, there's not much Wikipedia can do about. Bias is inherent to being human it seems, as the linked article explains amongst other things. Lectonar (talk) 06:03, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Should we ban New York Post as cited sources? 174.135.36.220 (talk) 07:21, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Ultimately, you would have to bring that up at the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. I havent't checked if it has been brought up before, though. But try to get some opininions on the article talk-page first. Lectonar (talk) 07:41, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

[edit]when my Id is capable of creating new page? --David Wright Brown (talk) 01:09, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
- You need to be autoconfirmed to do that, but I would refrain from writing an article....you will need a lot of Wiki-experience to get it right. Try the process laid out at WP:AFC instead. Lectonar (talk) 07:11, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Revision deletion request: uncontroversial RD6. Non-contentious housekeeping
[edit]I have royally messed up the revision history on an article with a accidentally made edits (then reverted) on a dodgy input device. Would appreciate cleanup if that's possible/not too much trouble.
history page: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hans-Hermann_Hoppe&action=history
The intended edit is Special:Diff/1229814752, these ones are all mistakes that add nothing other than clutter (and perhaps embarassment 😅):
(2 cases of accidental edits followed by an undo)
Special:Diff/1229813029
Special:Diff/1229814419
Special:Diff/1229823072
Special:Diff/1229823270
All the best,

- Hmmm...I don't really see a need for a revision-deletion here; we have normal editing activity, and you have mostly undone the edits you made. The only question that remains imho is if it is libertarian or capitalist critique (capitalist, if that was your intention), and that can be hashed out on the talk-page. Alternatively you can simply make a null-edit on the last version before your edits. Lectonar (talk) 07:15, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- >Alternatively you can simply make a null-edit on the last version before your edits
- could you clarify what you meant by this? Sorry, maybe it's obvious to a more seasoned wikipedian what would be achieved by doing this. Tomatoswoop (talk) 20:11, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Just go into the history of a page, find the last "good version" of the page, click on edit, and then save. This will put the page back to a version without (in your case) accidental edits. Lectonar (talk) 07:22, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- To clarify, I meant to edit the page, I just didn't meant to do the 4 back and fourth edits (one of which was an accidental hit of twinkle's "vandalism" button for my own edits, which I then reverted. Or... un-reverted, I suppose? 😅 Tomatoswoop (talk) 20:14, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- It's no problem...even after almost 20 years editing here, I make plenty of mistakes of any kind. Lectonar (talk) 07:24, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Full protection
[edit]Since you fully protected Cunty, you gave no rationale. Why? Plus it was at RFD a week or fortnight ago. No vandalism in there, so either unprotect it or delete it as I see no use in keeping it. Intrisit (talk) 09:54, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- It was a request at RfP, and I gave a rationale: no need to change this (and there really isn't). I won't uniterally delete it either, as it is a probable term for a redirect. Lectonar (talk) 07:04, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

I am Native American Indigenous woman and I come with an open mind. Our Universe is Beautiful and at the same time a mystery, but can be a dangerous place if we don't get our Spiritual Knowledge back that we've lost as human beings. Here is my number if someone can reach out to me and let me know if this group is what I'm loooing for? Hi, Lecto. I believe you may have forgotten to put the semi-protection icon on the article for Rachael Lillis. Or does the lock not go there if it's not an indefinite protection? Sorry for bothering you if it's the latter. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 17:11, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, normally a bot puts it there automagically...why this didn't work here I do not know...my guess is because the page was edited before the bot did his run. You can put the lock in if you like...it will be removed automatically once the the protection has expired. Lectonar (talk) 06:59, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Urmommmmmmm (20:45, 14 October 2024)
[edit]How do I get good at editing? --Urmommmmmmm (talk) 20:45, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Urmommmmmmm:. You could try looking at the Help pages, beginning here WP:NEWBIE or the education material provided for students here. If you intend to stay and edit, you might like to consider changing your username. "Ur Mom", and variants of it, are often associated with vandalism, and the long list of "m's" makes it difficult for people to type your username which can be unhelpful when you collaborate with other editors. Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.
