Split documentation out to /doc

I've already created the /doc page and improved the documentation. The sandbox code to fix the template itself is here. I also fixed a semantic markup error in the process. — SMcCandlish   Talk⇒ ɖ∘¿¤þ   Contribs. 11:34, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Add parameter to suppress noob instructions

The excessive amount of noob-oriented instruction clutter in this template make some editors not want to use it, especially on secondary sandboxes and sub-sandboxes no one will ever see but us. I've implemented a |plain= option to hide that stuff w/o interfering with |list=, which is what a lot of us want this template for. The sandbox code to add this (includes the above 2 fixes, and spacing cleanup) is here. The /doc page has already been updated with documentation for this parameter, but it is commented out until the feature is added. The changes have been thoroughly test-cased in Template:User sandbox/testcases. — SMcCandlish   Talk⇒ ɖ∘¿¤þ   Contribs. 11:34, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

There is not much point in adding {{my sandbox}} to your user page when it's linked from the top of every page, so this text can be removed:

you can also add {{My sandbox}} to your userpage for easy access.

thanks Gurch (talk) 10:03, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

is that true in all skins? Isn't it worth highlighting it anyway, seeing as users may not be aware of that link? Happy to sync if so: just ping me. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 14:17, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
This template is shown to you when you create a user sandbox, which you do by clicking on the "my sandbox" link. So... it would be hard not to be aware of it. The only other time you'd see it is if you added it yourself to a user subpage, in which case you probably already know how to access it.
It is there in all skins, because it's done by javascript in the common js file. It isn't there for people with javascript disabled, but nowadays so much of the interface is javascript-dependent that evidently nobody cares about them anyway. Gurch (talk) 13:29, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
If the matter is simple redundancy then I don't think making the link inaccessible to non-JS users is a good call here, no matter how few of them there may be. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 09:45, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Semi-Protection broken

For some reason, when I attempt to edit the Semi-Protected page, it acts like a Protected page that can be edited by adminstrators, not confirmed users or other users without adminstrator permissions. The edit button is called "Edit", like a unprotected page or a Semi-Protected page when using a confirmed account would, but the title of the page when editing the bugged Semi-Protected page includes "View source". --EleoTager (talk) 15:47, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

This page is protected in two ways: directly, and by cascading protection from Wikipedia:Cascade-protected items. It's the latter that is preventing you from editing it. For efficiency reasons, only direct protection is checked when rendering the standard page view, so cascading protection and Title blacklist protection do not affect the presence of an "edit" versus "view source" link. to new sentence:

Why? The current sentence uses a comma incorrectly between compound elements that are not independent clauses and incorrectly uses a colon, which must be preceded by an independent clause; comparatively, the new sentence is correct grammatically and more concise. Please examine Template:User sandbox/sandbox where a helpful editor has mocked up this proposed change: That the user sandbox temple should not display any message at all when an article that deploys it is in the Draft: namespace. If it acts in this manner, please implement the change.

The rationale is to avoid confusion to editors during the WP:AFC process when a draft is moved from a User: namespace to the Draft: namespace, and is comparable with that in {{Userspace draft}}.

I am not competent to check the syntax. Fiddle Faddle 22:31, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

I have been trying to add hlist as parameter to |list= without success when trying to add a horisontal list of my sandboxes. The list ends up in a new row. Anyone know a solution or is there some changes in code that might be done? User's Sandboxed Article Growing Farm

Have a look here: User:ManosHacker/sandbox and see how Template:User sand box works. New users can create, fast end errorless, their multi-article sandboxed workplace, fully organized as a(n always two clicks away) list, in which sandboxed articles are ready to be moved to main article space with simple clicks (mistakes were the rule for new users without these new buttons, when moving from user namespace to main). Experience has shown (Greek Wikipedia, used since February 2015) that there were zero bites from old users. We have been using it for several months at Wikipedia School as standard practice. Unhide functionality (click both "show" commands) to get view of funcionality. Follow sandboxed child articles to see the change of behavior of the template inside a sandboxed article. Hovering gives guidance. Moving a sandbox to an article removes it from the personal sandboxes view list.·· ManosHacker 23:33, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

What exactly are you proposing? Eman235/talk 10:29, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

@ManosHacker: Hi. :) This is an interesting idea. Is it supposed to replace Template:User sandbox? Because if so, you should make a proposal at Template talk:User sandbox so that editors there will be aware of your ideas. I also recommend advertising the discussion at WP:VPT, as technical people are more likely to be interested in this idea than others. If no-one responds even after that, then you can just assume that the lack of response counts as a consensus and start a protected edit request. (p.s. ManosHacker, just took a look at it and it looks really good. A note on the technical implementation: {{Move sandbox to article}}, {{Sandbox subpages}}, and {{Create sandbox subpage}}, as "sub-templates" of the main one, could probably be moved under the main template instead of hanging out in template space as separate templates.
Regarding getting people to look at it, it's weird that more people didn't weigh in at the technical village pump. It might be on-topic at WP:VPPR instead of the technical one, though. Generally, good luck with your template! APerson (talk!) 00:39, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Enhanced functionality

There is an enhancement of {{user sandbox}}, with advanced functionality: {{user sand box}}.

It supports:

  • multiple user sandboxes for developing article content,
  • pre-formed article templates,
  • custom article templates (user or coordinated, i.e. to support editathons),
  • easy and foolproof page creation and move to article space
  • translating to a sandbox
  • automatically handled & displayed user sandbox list
  • manually removal of sandboxes from the list, and
  • adaption of template behavior on place or action
    • during edit or view
    • outside user space
    • in user's main sandbox
    • in user's sub-sandboxes

Module sandbox

While working on the GCI 2017, I've been trying to encourage young aspiring programmers to edit Wikipedia. Many of them have coding skills far beyond their (often non-existent) Wikipedia skills.

As anyone coming to Wikipedia with that sort of background will be writing Lua in the Module: namespace, it would be useful if they had a link to Module:Sandbox/their_user_name that will be their sandbox for writing code. I expect it wouldn't be used very often, but would be at least as valuable as the Template sandbox link currently displayed. Rewording of "review request suggestion"

Currently, the wording of the sandbox AFC notice (what does "AFC" stand for anyway?) says:

Finished writing a draft article? Are you ready to request an experienced editor review it for possible inclusion in Wikipedia? [Submit your draft for review!]

I feel uncomfortable when I see this, and I think the wording could be improved.

Problem: It implies "experienced editors" are the authority on what is allowed to be on Wikipedia.

  1. Are they going to give me detailed feedback about what to fix?
Is it going to be a back-and-forth process of submit—return-submit-return endlessly finding mistakes and endlessly fixing them?
  2. Isn't this wording a violation of Wikipedia's "Be bold" policy?
This wording carries a heavy implicit message that "possible rejection" is equally likely, and that Wikipedia has a gated community that requires proof of worthiness before being included within its walls.

I know it seems like overreacting, but I think it's worth discussing how to make Wikipedia more welcoming and appear more accessible. Right now this message gives an illusion of red-tape, when actually it's really easy to create new articles on Wikipedia without going through any sort of process.

Here is one suggestion for replacing the wording in the AFC notice:

Finished drafting an article? Be bold and publish it on Wikipedia! Or request an experienced editor to review it: [Submit your draft for review!]

JKVeganAbroad (talk) 15:59, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Not done This request demonstrates a misunderstanding of Wikipedia practices: the claims that "experienced editors" are the authority on what is allowed to be on Wikipedia and that Wikipedia has a gated community that requires proof of worthiness before being included within its walls are in fact true, via processes like Wikipedia:New page patrol. It is, in fact, very difficult to create an article that will not be quickly deleted, and implementing this request would serve only to cause false hope. (And, for what it's worth, AFC stands for Wikipedia:Articles for creation). * Pppery * it has begun... 16:28, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Change Submit for Review

As we know, the Draft namespace exists for those submitting to WP:AFC, therefore it now seems silly that there is a big blue button on this template for submitting an sandbox for review. Rather than get rid of the button completely, maybe something that 'converts' the sandbox in to a Draft namespace article would be more useful, not only for new editors, but for AfC reviewers as well.

Either that or replace 'Finished writing a draft article? Are you ready to request an experienced editor review it for possible inclusion in Wikipedia?' with something like 'This sandbox is for testing edits, do you wish to create a draft article' with the blue button heading to WP:WIZARD - RichT|C|E-Mail 17:30, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Not done: As I understand it, Draftspace is the preferred location for AfC drafts, but that submitting from a user sandbox is perfectly acceptable. It also seems silly to move a page twice, once to Draftspace and then potentially again to mainspace. firefly ( t · c ) 19:13, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Mention of the noindex parameter

Hi. I'm a new editor. I found the handling of the noindex parameter on this page contradictory and confusing enough to lead newbies like me to using it improperly. At first, it says,

  • "noindex=no - indexing by search engines will be allowed (by default, noindex is "yes", i.e. pages with this template transcluded on them are not indexed by search engines). This parameter should almost always be omitted, because sandboxes should not be indexed as Wikipedia content. (My empasis.)

Then later in the page it says,

  • "Set to something other than 'yes' to make this page visible to search engines like Google."

Many ordinary readers won't pick up on the double negative in the first quote and happily set their sandboxes to something other than "yes" as the second quote seems to direct us to do. Perhaps fixing this would save effort and electricity? Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 23:05, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Honestly, I cannot think of a valid reason for search engines to index the contents of user sandboxes on Wikipedia, since it cannot lead to anything but confusion and mischief. The noindex property should be set permanently and not be changeable by a template parameter.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  04:32, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Possible typo in Sandbox banner

Resolved

On my Sandbox page, it has a banner. One sentence in the banner says, "Are you ready to request an experienced editor review it for possible inclusion in Wikipedia?" To me, it seems "editor review it" should be changed to "editor to review it". Or am I missing something. Is it really a typo? If so, should I report it to someone? Should I change it? How? Thanks. Sunandshade (talk) 05:17, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

It's not a true typo, because it's not literally an error, it's just a shorthand phrasing that is more common probably in British English. But a revision that would be clear to everyone regardless of dialect, so it better suits MOS:COMMONALITY, would be good.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  05:35, 24 December 2023 (UTC); revised 05:41, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Three possible fixes are:
  1. Are you ready to request an experienced editor to review it for possible inclusion in Wikipedia?
  2. Are you ready to request that an experienced editor review it for possible inclusion in Wikipedia?
  3. Are you ready to request review of it by an experienced editor for possible inclusion in Wikipedia?
The first is actually awkward, with a "to ... to ..." construction; the second is clearer but still could potentially confuse a non-native English speaker; so I went with the third. Marking this resolved, unless someone has a concern to raise.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  05:40, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Formatting adjustment

In the sandbox for this template, I tweaked the bolding/italics to better emphasize the main point of the notice (that the page is a sandbox) as the most prominent element. Feel free to let me know how it looks; I will plan to implement shortly if there are no concerns. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 17:01, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

Please add {{Sandbox heading/Tabs}} (and protect that template) to make navigating between the different sandboxes easier. We should get users to experiment and play around with different functions in the various sandboxes and their own sandbox. It also has a link to "test Wikipedia" for experimentation with user scripts, etc. Awesome Aasim 03:43, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
