Citizenship

[edit]

Why is he referred to only as french ? He is born algerian and still holds that citizenship. He might have asked for french citizenship when he was 18, which might have been granted the same year. Having french paper for the last 6 years does not remove that he has been and remain algerian his entire life. That is not even going to consideration over what culture he adheres to the most.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.48.188.74 (talk) 18:41, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pronouncing

[edit]

Benze-ma or Ben-zema? Xkingoftheworldx (talk) 15:53, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think his name is pronounced Benz-eh-ma Matt G (talk) 22:16, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ben-Zema (Ben meaning 'son of' in Algeria, so Son of Zema)TonyStarks (talk) 00:56, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe he needs one of those IPA things. Ben-ZEE-ma is correct. Spiderone (talk) 09:56, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, Spiderone, that would be incorrect. It's pronounced ben-ZAY-ma. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Marc-Olivier Pagé (talkcontribs) 18:57, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've never heard anyone use that pronunciation. I added an IPA anyway. Spiderone (talk) 15:43, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably because most of the times you've heard his name was from a British commentator... I'm just speculating. But trust me, I'm a francophone like him, and in France they pronounce it ben-zay-ma. That's also the way my Arab friends pronounce it. If you like, I can try to post here the link to a French video where Domenech pronounces his name.--Marc-Olivier Pagé (talk) 05:25, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No it's cool I'm just glad we've got an IPA as it needs one really Spiderone (talk) 17:21, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I know you said a video was unnecessary, but I had to find one to justify removing the "benzima" IPA. I was unable to find a video where Domonech pronounces "Benzema", but here is a 30-second video where you hear 2 French commentators pronouncing it repeatedly : http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/benzema/video/x2s92f_benzema-lorient-lyon-11_events--Marc-Olivier Pagé (talk) 19:14, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was stated in wikipedia that Benzema has become a Manchester City player. There is no what so ever confirmation, news or any rumours in fact regarding this news. And the link that the person used as proof is just another tabloid site in Spanish stating that Benzema wishing to play for Real Madrid (whether this site is truthful or not is unsure). Please end all pranks. Lets keep wikipedia to its true purpose: Free Facts. No Pranks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jinius (talkcontribs) 04:25, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OL official website has confirmed Real Madrid deal [2].--83.39.183.4 (talk) 16:38, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that this doesn't mean Benzema is a Real player. Far from it. The club and the player still have to negotiate personal terms, and then he has to pass the physical, and then, only then, can he officially join Real Madrid. You may think this is all formalities, but the fact remains, he is a Lyon player until you see him being unveiled at Bernabeu with a white shirt. --Mosmof (talk) 16:47, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think we need to add a bit of text that states that Benzema and Lyonnais had agreed that the transfer to Real Madrid be completed, as stated by on their official website (French, Translated version) Chrisportelli (talk) 16:57, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do what you like, very soon you will have to change it back to Real Madrid. How do you know that he won't fail a medical or something? Saying he's a Real player is quite misleading. Spiderone (talk) 07:37, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:Karim Benzema/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

This article is in decent shape, but it needs more work before it becomes a Good Article.

  1. Is it well written?
    A. The prose is clear and concise, and the spelling and grammar are correct:
In the Early career section, "Benzema is a product of the Olympique Lyonnais Academy", what do you mean with "product"? Same section, "Benzema quickly ascending up the ranks", do you mean "ascend"? In the Breakout season, "...switched to the number 10 shirt and was given control of the attack", what do you mean with "attack"? Same section, 2008-09 season, and Real Madrid, "In the Champions League, Benzema scored an important brace against Rangers at Ibrox Park", "Karim got off to a good start for the 2008–09 season scoring a brace in Lyon's opening league match", "He was among the top scorers in the UEFA Champions League group stage, scoring five goals,[37] a brace against Steaua Bucureşti", "...and winning only two with Benzema scoring only two goals in that stretch, a brace against Le Mans in a 3–1 victory", and "On 24 August, Benzema netted a brace in Real Madrid's 4–0 victory", what do you mean with "brace"? In the International career section, the beginning of this sentence ---> "He featured with the under-18 team", reads odd. Same section, "...and after a muted performance", what do you mean with "muted"?
Man, you stole my strike thing. :) Anyways, check. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 18:42, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    B. It complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation:
In the lead, link "Real Madrid" once. In the Breakout season, link "out of bounds" and "brace" to their correspondence articles. Linking "" might help. In the Real Madrid section, it would be best to add Raúl's last name. In the International career section, "He has now adopted the number ten for France" ---> "He has now adopted the number 10 for France".
    Check.
  2. Is it verifiable with no original research, as shown by a source spot-check?
    A. It contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline:
Reference 6, "lepoint.fr" ---> "Le Point". Reference 20 is missing Publisher info. There's a dead link.
    Done, ref 20 was a Youtube link Spiderone 17:20, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Are YouTube videos even reliable sources? What makes that particular video reliable? Is it infringement on copyright etc? --Jimbo[online] 21:07, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Brace (sports) article, which detailed what a brace in sports is was removed. I think the majority of readers of his page certainly know what a brace in football is. Joao10Siamun (talk) 23:28, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    I replaced the YouTube video Spiderone 08:14, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Majority of your readers might know what "brace" means. I am not one of those people. But, I'm glad that this was sorted out. Another, check.
    B. Reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose):
Is there a source for this ---> "The bad form resulted in Lyon losing their grip on 1st place position and eventually falling out of the title race, thus ending their streak of seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles. Benzema was a part of four of those title runs"?
    Check.
    C. It contains no original research:
    D. It contains no copyright violations nor plagiarism:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. It addresses the main aspects of the topic:
    B. It stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style):
  4. Is it neutral?
It represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each:
In the Breakout season, "Benzema continued through to goal and capped the run by blasting a right-footed shot past the shocked Croat Vedran Runje", "blasting" seems like POV. Same section, this ---> "Benzema continued his great form scoring" sounds like POV. In the 2008–09 season, "Due to his great start", POV.
    Check.
  5. Is it stable?
It does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute:
  6. Is it illustrated, if possible, by images?
    A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content:
    B. Images are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
If the statements above can be answered, I will pass the article. Good luck with improving this article!

--  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 16:45, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you to everyone who got the stuff I left at the talk page, because I have gone off and placed the article as GA. Congrats. ;) --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 18:42, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move to Manchester?

[edit]

The article claims Benzema moved to Manchester United on the eve of the transfer deadline i.e. 31st Aug 2010. This is in no way true as he is still a Real Madrid player and appeared in a recent La Liga game on August 29 against Real Mallorca in which he featured as a second half substitute. This article should be better protected as vandalism on his profile are frequent.

The alleged case included in his bio is out of place. It should not be part of his introduction - since his claim to fame is based on his soccer skills and not alleged personal legal history. If true and found to be relevant - it should be in a separate section. UPDATE

Frenchman Karim Benzema was named the best of the year(2010-2011) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.55.238.248 (talk) 00:21, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Height: 1.87 m (6 ft 2 in) or 1.84m?

[edit]

I am French and I am surprised by the height of Karim Benzema. The height of 1.87 m comes from the site of the Real Madrid. But, almost every else, he is said to have a height of 1.84 or even 1.83.--Rene1596 (talk) 10:06, 12 June 2012 (UTC) Now, I see that the site of Real Madrid gives the size of 1.84 m on another page http://www.realmadrid.com/cs/Satellite/en/1193041476158/1202775163178/jugador/Jugador/Benzema.htm . Obviously 1.87 was a typo. So, I shall edit the infobox. --Rene1596 (talk) 10:14, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He is about 183cm which is the same while he played for Lyon...some men lie about their height to appear more masculine and more of a real man...it is very common.

Do you have a WP:RS for his height, as opposed to conjecture about "masculinity"? Mattythewhite (talk) 19:39, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

He was never replaced and remained in the squad per FIFA. Kante4 (talk) 16:43, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish Super Cup

[edit]

He also won the 2019-20 Spanish Super Cup with Real Madrid. Please, add this to the article in "Honours".

He was not in the squad. Kante4 (talk) 11:35, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

25 or 24 titles?

[edit]

Real Madrid's official website considers Benzema to have won 25 titles, including the 2019-20 Spanish Super Cup. In Isco's article, the 2021-22 Champions League title was counted in the list of honours despite not playing an one minute in the tournament. There is controversy about this. In this case we must follow the official websites. -- Mishary94 (talk) 13:40, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Change line "On 30 June 2023, Benzema was reported to be on the brink of leaving Real Madrid to join" to "On 30 May 2023, Benzema was reported to be on the brink of leaving Real Madrid to join", date incorrect. 1compal (talk) 08:02, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the section and explained it to EndzoneEnthusiast (talk · contribs) why i feel this way. We don't add rumours and stuff or else some articles would be huge. We can discuss if you want of course. That info is more suited fore a blog or news site. Kante4 (talk) 11:02, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you think this is appropriate then it's fine for me. I trust your process. Thanks! Sartaj267 12:30, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Until 30 June, he is a player of Madrid. Kante4 (talk) 11:46, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Benzema's departure from Real Madrid CF

[edit]

Numerous articles support that Karim Benzema, the famous French footballer, who won the 2022 Ballon D'or, is leaving his team of 14 years. It has been confirmed by Carlo Ancelotti, the team, and teammates. Please fix this as it is true, and we all want Wikipedia to be correct. JacobWikia (talk) 21:50, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's all in the article but he stays a Madrid player until 30 June 2022. Kante4 (talk) 21:52, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I totaly agree, and I want this to be fixed and information to be renewed as soon as possible Erosssaaaa (talk) 08:13, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Benzema isn't playing for Real Madrid anymore.

[edit]

Please fix this, he is not in Real Madrid anymore and there's written that he is currently in Real Madrid! Erosssaaaa (talk) 08:12, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

He is, until 30 June 2023. Kante4 (talk) 14:51, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
so why don't you delete the new entry about his club? he is in real till the 30.06 5.12.255.108 (talk) 11:53, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Add new parameter?

[edit]

We should add new parameter in infobox named "Future club" or something (I don't know if it's a correct phrase, feel free to suggest a more correct phrase) to {{Infobox football biography}}. Edit requests above clearly shows the need for this parameter, because only put sentence in lead paragraph is not enough. Hddty (talk) 06:03, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Benzema didn’t play for france in the world cup.

[edit]

In the “representing france” section, it shows him as runner up during the 2022 world cup, yet he was injured throughout the entire world cup and didn’t play in the final. Can someone change this? Somedev123Gtg (talk) 12:06, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Somedev123Gtg: He was never replaced or removed from the FIFA list. Here was a discussion but without a consensus it seems. Kante4 (talk) 12:17, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. I didn’t know about that. Somedev123Gtg (talk) 13:32, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Explain his motivation for moving to Saudi Arabia?

[edit]

It's not clear from the article why one of the best players in the world has moved to a league with third-rate talent, leaving him unable to compete at the highest level of the game (i.e. Champions league). 2600:1700:5B2C:A090:E9FC:90B:A0B:F0C7 (talk) 03:44, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

the last sentence of the intro: "At 34 years and 302 days old, he is the second-oldest winner of the award, after Stanley Matthews."
