Article content and scope
[edit]There are some issues with content and scope for this article that need addressing. While the topic of pre-Columbian funereal & burial practices in lower Central America/Intermediate Area (or mesoamerica for that matter) would make a notable and worthwhile overview article, the present content of this article does not really fit in with that aim.
Garifuna is not a precolumbian (or 'ancient central american') culture, and the dugu ceremony described here is not really or mainly a funereal rite. While the Maya practices described here are precolumbian, they are associated with the Mesoamerican culture area, and the describing the aspect of human sacrifice is not the same thing as a description of funerary rites and practices. It's also redundant, as other articles already exist (eg Sacrifice in Maya culture) covering this.
Thus practically none of the content here really belongs in an article about precolumbian funerary practices.
I propose/intend: to move this article to Dugu to turn it in to an article on that ceremony specifically, as the content on dugu is not covered elsewhere (whereas the rest of it, esp. on Maya sacrifice, already is). If at some future point someone has the inclination to commence an article on precolumbian funerary practices—either in mesoamerica, Isthmo-Colombian/Intermediate Area, or combined—then well and so much the better. However as the information that's here does not really relate to that topic then I don't think we should keep this one as-is, waiting until some more directly relevant material is sourced and added.
ps. I realise this was done as one of the KU assigments, but I guess those assessments have been completed and so we can make whatever amendments are necessary to blend in with the overall wikipedia content structure w/out impacting that assignment.--cjllw ʘ TALK 01:23, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
Article rename
[edit]Update: ok, I have moved this from Funeral Ceremonies of Ancient Central America to Dugu, and edited the content so it concentrates only on the Garifuna ceremony. The other material on Maya sacrifice has not been moved or copied elsewhere, as its content is already covered in our other relevant articles.
The article still in need of some further tidying/corrections.--cjllw ʘ TALK 03:52, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
- I've completed a first-pass copyedit. Clarifications are needed, as noted.--Simon the Likable (talk) 16:07, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
