How do you set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request? I don't see any parameter listings or buttons or way to do this.

How do you set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request? I don't see any parameter listings or buttons or way to do this. TheFairfaxian (talk) 00:11, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@TheFairfaxian: I assume you're talking about Talk:Jan_Karski#Extended-confirmed-protected_edit_request_on_8_August_2022. The general process to reactivate and edit request is to edit the section containing the request (there should be an edit link in the section header) and then replace {{edit extended-protected|(...)|answered=yes}} with {{edit extended-protected|(...)|answered=no}}, retaining the value I have marked with (...). Note that when copying the replacement from this page, you should copy it while viewing the page, as I have specifically inserted code which displays what should be replaced, rather than forcing you to edit this section to find out. See Help:Templates for more information about the curly bracket snytax in the Software behind Wikipedia.
As a related matter, there is a process to confirm that a particular text or image previously published elsewhere with a copyright notice can be made available under our two content licenses, as specified in the lead of Wikipedia:Copyrights and section 7 of the Wikimedia Foundation Terms of Use, however, I will warn you that Wikipedia's content licenses are deliberately very broad and this might not be what the university wants. That being said, if the university does want to make the text avialable under Wikipedia's content licenses, please see WP:DCM. Note that "permission for use in Wikipedia" or similar licensing shemes are not accepted. Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:21, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Safari Reader View - Wikipedia changed something and it is broken

[edit]

Hello,

I typically read wikipedia in Reader View on iOS Safari. In the last week or so, something was changed now the sections are no longer expanded.

Previously, all of the text of an article would be expanded, now the sections of an article are in bold, but tapping on them just creates a blue box and the text cannot be read.

This does not seem to affect Reader View on MacOS Safari.

Was this change discussed somewhere already?

Thanks

Iamagloworm (talk) 08:09, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I believe this is a general problem with the way these reader views work. I tried to reproduce it in Firefox by deliberately opening the mobile domain in an Incognito Window, and can confirm that sections which are not expanded before going into reader view will have their contents missing in reader mode. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victor Schmidt (talkcontribs) 08:43, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I had not tested Firefox previously, so I cannot say if there was a change there. For iOS Safari this is new behaviour.
Is there not a place on Wikipedia that discusses changes to how the site is rendered?
As noted the Reader View behaviour of desktop MacOS Safari still works the same way. Iamagloworm (talk) 11:13, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You could try asking at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), but this sounds like a Safari bug to me, not something to be fixed on Wikipedia's end. Rummskartoffel 11:50, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In the "Middleton connection" section at the end this article, please do a direct link to he section titled "Barbara Lupton (Lady Bullock)" on the Lupton family page where it says "Lady Bullock (nee Barbara May Lupton)". Can you do the same direct link to the "Olive Middleton (nee Lupton)" link to the Olive Middleton section which is also on the Lupton family page. Thanks - I cannot do this on this machine. Thanks 49.198.41.28 (talk) 08:45, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Done. DuncanHill (talk) 09:46, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article indexing

[edit]

I had created a content months ago and was waiting to index that in google but it's not yet showing google. Please do the needful soon as possible. Danijose (talk) 10:35, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Danijose You edited your user page, which is not article space and is not indexed by search engines. You should use Articles for Creation to submit a draft article- but your current text is unlikely to be accepted; please read Your First Article and use the new user tutorial before further attempts to create an article- which is the most difficult task to perform here. 331dot (talk) 10:38, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your user page is for telling about yourself as a Wikipedia editor or user only. 331dot (talk) 10:38, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Danijose. Please understand that Wikipedia is not for telling the world about something - that's called promotion, and is strictly forbidden. Wikipedia is only interested in subjects which the world has already been told about - and not by the subject or its associates.
If at some point there is an article about the Institute, the article will not belong to the Institute, will not be controlled by the Institute, and should be based almost entirely on what people unconnected with the Institute have published (bad as well as good).
Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.
If you have some connection with the Institute you also need to read about editing with a conflict of interest; and if you are in any way employed by the institute you must read and comply with the policy on Paid editing. ColinFine (talk) 11:04, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Does Wikipedia accept bitcoin for donation

[edit]

Do they or do I have to sell my bitcoin to donate I am wondering how their donation says credit cards PayPal Amazon or Apple 2600:8805:BC82:4D00:C9B9:D4C8:653E:BF70 (talk) 12:19, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can find information on ways to give at donate:Ways to Give. This does not mention Bitcoin, so I don't think so. ColinFine (talk) 12:27, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Backstory: the Wikimedia Foundation started accepting Bitcoin donations in 2014 [1] but stopped accepting them in 2022 [2] citing the instability of the crypto market and the large amount of electricity required to mine the coins.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:29, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That second citation is independent (good) but does not suppoort the statement that WF stopped accepting Bitcoin (bad) - it only says they were thinking about it. Is there a statement from WF that they have stopped? I can see that neither Bitcoint nor cryptopcurrency are mentioned on their Other ways to give page. -- Verbarson  talkedits 09:15, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Changing of old page titles name to new title name

[edit]

Hi,

I am writing in to ask for an assistant on how to change the current Chevron House Chevron House to 30 Raffles Place as the building owner have been changed. Newtontio (talk) 13:21, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Newtontio Wikipedia does not necessarily use official or legal names, but what the preponderance of reliable sources use as the name of a topic; see WP:COMMONNAME. However, if this is the most common name, you may propose a page move at Requested Moves. If you think this will be at all controversial, you should first discuss it on the article talk page. 331dot (talk) 13:28, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

False warnings

[edit]

I've been warned twice that I've done disruptive edits. But if you go to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Climatepedia, you can see that I've done no disruptive edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Climatepedia (talkcontribs) 13:43, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Climatepedia Your edits are disruptive as the article does not qualify for speedy deletion. Also see WP:FRINGE. You are also now on notice about the special rules regarding the climate change topic area. You will be blocked if your actions continue. 331dot (talk) 13:49, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The warnings were entirely appropriate. Wikipedia doesn't base content on random YouTube video rants. AndyTheGrump (talk) 13:53, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

LST Music producer article entry

[edit]

Hello, I would like to find a contributor to do an encyclopedia entry about me as a notable music producer. I'm not a real popular music producer at the present. But I may find myself popular among the music industry and fans soon. A wikipedia documentation would be a valuable resource for someone to research and discover more about me. I have a complete website that cover about 90% of my history and full explanation of my purpose in the music industry. Can you guide me on how to find a Wiki writer/contributor that would consider looking into doing an article on me? I feel some of the paid so-called professional services are not true writers that are passionate about building the Wiki encyclopedia with informative and notable content. 75.168.81.91 (talk) 19:49, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Help Desk! If someone is interested in writing an article about you, they will have done so, because they believe you are WP:Notable according to Wikipedia's standards. Having 1 billion views on Youtube/Soundcloud wouldn't count as notable by Wikipedia's internal definition, on other hand, receiving WP:SIGCOV in 2 secondary/independent news articles would (which a personal website isn't). See WP:NMUSICIAN for specific guidelines on notable musicians. Thank you for your question! ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 20:09, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why do I see so many user subpages created with only this sentence? Is this some part of a tutorial? The edit summary is always automatic post as part of sandbox guided tour, so it is probably a tutorial, but does anyone know which one? Weeklyd3 (talk) 21:40, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Add a language to a page

[edit]

Hello, I would like to add an English page to the following article: Ordynat – Wikipédia, a enciclopédia livre (wikipedia.org) It would consist of an simple translation from the article in Portuguese, a replication of its links (in English), and some typos I would like to correct. For the moment, the above article simply redirect to another, larger article, instead of proposing a concise, English version. What is the easiest way to proceed, please ? Thanks in advance. Kind regards Stan Lubomirski Stan Lubomirski (talk) 22:58, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We already have an article on Ordynat. PICKLEDICAE🥒 23:02, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, not exactly. The English page refers to a much wider topic. All I want is to copy-paste this page in Portuguese into English. Possible ? Stan Lubomirski (talk) 00:54, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, User:Stan Lubomirski, it's possible if you use the title Ordynat (Portugal). and proceed with caution per Wikipedia:Translation.--Quisqualis (talk) 01:16, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, you may not "copy/paste" an article written in Portuguese into the English Wikipedia. You must translate it into English, just as you propose to do. We have guidance for that. The most important rule: attribute the Portuguese source. See Wikipedia:Translation, as recommended by Quisqualis. -Arch dude (talk) 04:22, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to both, I meant 'copy/paste' my very English translation while respecting every detail of the Portuguese article, starting with its title. Stan Lubomirski (talk) 07:31, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Stan Lubomirski, do you want to create an article about the Polish–Lithuanian Ordynat and link it to articles about the subject in other Wikipedias? That could be quite complex for a new editor. If so, you should start by reading Help:Your first article to find out how to create an article which is suitable for en Wikipedia. The best way to create the article is to follow the Wikipedia:Splitting process. I would recommend starting a discussion first rather than omitting that stage. When you have an article I believe a bot will create a Wikidata item in a couple of days and you could ask for help again.
There is guidance on translating from other Wikipedia at Wikipedia:Translation, but the Portuguese article pt:Ordynat is not suitable for en Wikipedia as it stands because it has no citations to reliable sources. TSventon (talk) 08:59, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon's point is important, Stan Lubomirski. If an article in another language Wikipedia is referenced up to en-wiki's standard, then it can be just a matter of translating the text and attributing the source. But often articles are not sourced to that standard (equally true of thousands and thousands of old articles in en-wiki) and a straight translation will not be accepted. In most cases I advise treating a translation as little different from creating a new article (see your first article). ColinFine (talk) 09:46, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In any case, as mentioned previously, attribution is required; you can find out how to do this at Help:Translation, or at WP:Copying within Wikipedia#Translating from other language Wikimedia projects (WP:TFOLWP). Mathglot (talk) 01:03, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite a photo in a newspaper that went out before the internet

[edit]

I'm looking to add a reference involving a protest from 1966, but the problem I am having is that the only source I can find for it is an old newspaper, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and it is a photo with a longer caption. I'm not sure how of ir it can be cited, as it's also only available on the Internet Archive, not a URL of its own. https://archive.org/details/herald-examiner-1966-05-04/mode/1up MarvelAge91 (talk) 23:51, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MarvelAge91: Sources do not need to be online. Use {{Cite_news}} and fill in the info about the newspaper date etc that it appeared in. RudolfRed (talk) 00:20, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed thank you.MarvelAge91 (talk) 00:24, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
