[edit]How do I link to a Wikipedia article in another Wikipedia article? (sounds dumb, but I've run into weird case where this isn't clear)
[edit]Hi,
In the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_presidents_of_the_National_Research_Council_of_Canada, I'm puzzled why some of the people listed link to articles about them in Wikipedia, while others don't. Specifically, I feel the name "John R. McDougall", second from the bottom in the table, should link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_R._McDougall, in the same way that (e.g.) the first name in the table, Henry Marshall Tory, links to the Wikipedia article for that person. When I go into "edit" mode for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_presidents_of_the_National_Research_Council_of_Canada, there's no difference in the format for these two names. How do I get the name "John R. McDougall" in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_presidents_of_the_National_Research_Council_of_Canada to become a clickable link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_R._McDougall? Thanks - 174.116.84.40 (talk) 00:14, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- All you do is type the name of the article to link to (make sure the spelling and capitalization are exact), then add two brackets ([[ ]]) on each side of the title. For example, [[Microsoft Windows]] would crate this: Microsoft Windows. If the resulting link you create is in red text, that means that the Wikipedia article you entered doesn't exist. Happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:16, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
Ayotte Custom Drums .Canada
[edit]It is a pretty safe assumption that this company is no longer in business . For many months now the telephone number shown on their contact page has been disconnected. They do not respond to emails and talking to a large percentage of the retailers they list ,these confirm that they can no longer contact the business. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.180.27.19 (talk) 00:26, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- Is this about a Wikipedia article? Which one? RudolfRed (talk) 00:39, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- The Ayotte Drums article entirely uses the present tense when speaking of the company. The whole article has bigger problems, however: it's written from the tone that you'd expect in a customer's blog, e.g. In recent months, reaching Ayotte Drums has been very easy compared to earlier years with the new staff, which promises a potentially great growth in resolving these issues. Nyttend (talk) 02:32, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- I've removed that sentence as just publicity spin. The domain name registration was renewed a couple of years ago and doesn't expire until 2021,
but the website hasn't been maintained. Later note: I see that the website is back up again, so I assume that the company is still trading. Dbfirs 09:39, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Clearing with no explanation
[edit]In the primary school article, everything after the introduction appears below the {{sidebar}}-based {{childcare}}. Why? Using preview, I've tried using {{clear left}} (does nothing), {{clear right}} (forces down the TOC), and {{clear}} (same as clear right), and I can't imagine what could cause the text to appear left of the sidebar, as it normally does. It's not something fundamentally related to {{sidebar}}, since other pages using sidebar-based templates, e.g. Recapitulation theory of atonement, have text next to the template. Removing the top image fixes the problem, but I don't believe that's the underlying reason — if I put the school image in the recapitulation article and preview, the text appears as normal. Nyttend (talk) 02:24, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
PS, it appears to be an interaction between my skin (Monobook) and my browser (IE). I've checked it when logged out, checked it when logged into my account in Chrome, and checked it when logged out in Chrome, and everything's normal in all cases. So why should it have this issue when using a specific browser-skin combination? Nyttend (talk) 02:30, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
PPS, I've enabled the gadget that puts the [edit] link at the right side of the section heading line, but disabling the gadget didn't change anything. Nyttend (talk) 02:41, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Dealing with an unresponsive IP
[edit]Greetings, does someone know how to handle an IP making seemingly pointless edits and not explaining why? The problem is about 72.177.30.42 (talk · contribs) in 1257 Samalas eruption. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 06:49, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- Like the IP is doing, Citation bot now inserts spaces in the wikitext between the parameters of citation templates. This makes it easier to see the breaks between parameters, and makes the line breaks occur more logically. Other edits are also minorly beneficial like delinking country and continent names, and inserting
{{convert}}
templates. Provided there are no further formatting breakages I wouldn't worry about it: Bhunacat10 (talk), 09:43, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Page edited, redirection of a page renewed
[edit]I have have obtained information about an Artist whose page initially had no information and was simply redirected to the TV program the artist was famed for. I removed the redirection and started to update the page when I found that the information I took so much time to list, was removed without warning or even registering in the deleted log.
Could someone tell me how I dispute this please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JudyBM (talk • contribs) 13:05, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- You had no references, so it was absolutely correct for it to be reverted to the redirect. If you believe that you have sufficient reliable sources to demonstrate the subject's notability, despite WP:Articles for deletion/Andrew Stone (Pineapple Dance Studios), then you can produce a draft and submit it for AFC review. Please read the advice at WP:Your first article. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:13, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- By the way, JudyBM, since you mention the deletion log — Special:Log/delete only records instances when an administrator hits a "delete" button, and the end result is that the page history is no longer accessible. Redirecting a page merely consists of removing the content and putting in code to redirect it, and it leaves the page history visible; this isn't a deletion from our software's perspective, so it doesn't get logged. - @Hoary: The OP can't move the draft until they're autoconfirmed. If they sort out the referencing they can submit the draft in userspace, and a reviewer can move it as necessary. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:08, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

football club nickname
[edit]Hello Dear Wikipedians, is there any policy about Football club nicknames or slogans. some guys use a racist name for football club with many resources. so how I can remove that name with resources? there is some source as like telegraph.Gholaghabijan (talk) 14:03, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Gholaghabijan: Not, off the top of my head, aware of any nicknames (official ones at least) that might be considered racist. Opposition fans might use a derogatory term in some instances I expect. Is there a particular article where you've encountered something inappropriate. If so, you are free to edit the page yourself as long as you provide an explanation in the edit summary. If the name is sourced, as might be inferred from your post, check the source for what it actually says. If it says something like 'fans of XXX Utd call YYY City "*****"' then it's probably not encyclopedic and could go. Unless the mutual name-calling forms part of, and is integral to, a long-standing and well-documented rivalry perhaps? Or if you would prefer, provide a link to the page so editors here can take a look. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 15:26, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
@Eagleash:
- @Gholaghabijan: I've looked at some of the links and yes they do say that the club is nicknamed 'The Red Wolves'. I am not certain that this is a problem? You say this is 'Grey Wolves propaganda' but I do not immediately see the connection. There are many teams Worldwide in many sports who are named, or nicknamed, 'Wolves'; Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League for example and many others here. If this team are nicknamed 'Red Wolves' and it is reported in reliable sources then Wikipedia in turn will report upon those sources. If you feel that this is derogatory, please explain why, and you should also be able to provide equally reliable sources to corroborate what you say (that this is a controversial or derogatory term). If fans are misusing the 'wolf' term to taunt other fans or other minorities then it a matter for the club or the relevant authority to take whatever action they feel to be appropriate. It does not affect the fact that the nickname is Red Wolves (for better or worse). Thank you. Regards. Eagleash (talk) 22:39, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
@Eagleash:
Hello, Thank you so much. if you look to wolf\wolves as team name, THERE ISN'T ANY COLOR with them. color is a serious fact in racism. some guys trying to push Tractor to their political convictions. they use anything as a cult or political sect symbol. wolf is an animal but grey wolf organization use it as myth and group symbol. there are another team greater than this in Persia but they don't use any symbol like this. in Turkey the minister showing a wolf symbol with his hand but Iranian people don't have it. thank you so much for discussion and opinion and links.Gholaghabijan (talk) 05:53, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- I do not think there is much more we can accomplish here. The club nickname is clearly Red Wolves. This appears well-documented and as such will be reported in Wikipedia. It is not likely to be removed. Any misuse of the nickname could be included in the article if there is enough coverage of this for it to achieve notability. Any edit which does not comply with WP:NPOV is likely to be reverted. Eagleash (talk) 07:50, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
@Eagleash:
Hello, you don't say anything about wiki anti-racist policy (if there is?) I need it seriously.
can I move\copy this discussion to article talk page?
Thank you so much for your kindness and patient, tolerant in replies. God bless you and Keep you. I pray for your health. Gholaghabijan (talk) 10:24, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- Yes it would be a good idea to move this to the article TP. But, don't delete the thread here. I am still not certain if there is an issue here. If the name 'Red Wolves' is an official club nickname then it should be mentioned in the article whether or not it has been used in an inappropriate way by fans. If, however, it has just been adopted by fans for political or other reasons there could be a case for not including it (subject to consensus) or doing so with an explanation and reliable sources. As an aside, some British fan groups have been found to be notable. Eagleash (talk) 14:40, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
"Origin" in Background Information
[edit]I'm confused about the use of "Birth" and "Origin" for Background Information. Since these words mean the same thing exactly, why don't the staff of Wikipedia choose a different term, such as "Early Residence"? OK, granted one word beats two, but the one word you have chosen is not meaningful. Perhaps "Early Residence" is not the ideal term, but at least it is the correct meaning. Origin has exactly the same meaning as place of birth. I realize you want to have some way to communicate that a person did not remain in his town of birth very long, but "Origin" is a huge failure to communicate. I hope your defense is more than just "That's how we have always done it."— Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikievil666 (talk • contribs)
- Is there a particular article you are referring to? If so, please let us know which one. It's impossible to say why the editiorial decision was made to use a particular word in a particular article without knowing which article we are discussing. Also, you ask why the "staff of Wikipedia" don't choose a different term. I'd like to point out that there is no "staff of Wikipedia" writing articles. Articles are all written by volunteers. In that same vein, if you don't like the use of "origin" in whatever article you don't like it in, you are free to change it to "Early residence" if you think that is better. However, be aware that someone might change it back, in which case you should be prepared to discuss it with them on the article talk page. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:59, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Tool that tracks WikiProject banner removals
[edit]One of the functionalities previously provided by the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Index assessment logs was tracking the removal of articles from a WikiProject (when a banner is removed or when an article is deleted). User:WP 1.0 bot hasn't been working for some four months now, and I'd like to know if there are alternative tools that could provide said information. It's relatively trivial to track project banner additions or other changes to talk pages via Special:RecentChangesLinked, but this of course doesn't work for removals. --Paul_012 (talk) 18:34, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
William Henry Newdigate
[edit]https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/delete&page=William_Henry_Newdigate
I am a bit baffled by the sudden deletion of this article on which I have been working. The subject of the article was a well-known South African and certainly notable enough to merit a Wikipedia article. The article was still in its infancy and I had only been working on it for a day or two. I find such rapid deletion without discussion a trifle high-handed. If someone could look into this it would be appreciated. Paul venter (talk) 20:33, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- It was deleted by User:Fram; why not ask them? Matt Deres (talk) 20:44, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- If you want to create an article on a "notable" person, then don't only use two links to geni.com, and give some clue in the article as to what he is notable for. You also changed a redirect into the article Francis Parker Newdigate, who was equally non notable. That one was sourced only to an enwiki mirror, so in reality it didn't have even a single source. And not a real claim to notability either. Fram (talk) 21:37, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- The article 'William Henry Newdigate' was being worked on and was tagged "in use" - one cannot expect the article to meet all requirements when it is incomplete - that is what 'incomplete' means, not finished. I never claimed that Francis Parker Newdigate was notable, but simply asked someone to correct a circular redirect, a redirect which was patently nonsensical. It is only polite to approach the author of an article and express your misgivings rather than to autocratically remove the article - it smacks of a lack of respect. Paul venter (talk) 22:28, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- The place for an incomplete draft is either the Draft: namespace or a userspace draft, not in mainspace. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:49, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- The 'in use' and 'under construction' tags are there for the purpose of working on articles in mainspace - or so I thought.... Paul venter (talk) 07:18, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- As it explains at Template:Under construction, "In general, this template should not be used for new articles with little content. Instead, the sandbox should be used to develop the article so that it has reasonable content when it is copied into namespace.". --David Biddulph (talk) 07:33, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- The phrasing of that guideline allows the editor some latitude. There are a number of tags such as {{In creation}} for use "when multiple edits are being made to add content immediately after creating the article". Clearly there is no strict rule against developing an article in mainspace. Paul venter (talk) 08:23, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, Paul venter, you can develop an article in mainspace, but if you don't "indicate why the subject is important or significant" during the first few minutes, you should not be surprised if it is speedily deleted under WP:A7 (which see). (You don't need to demonstrate that subject is notable that early.) If you develop in a draft, you don't need to worry about A7, because it applies only in mainspace —teb728 t c 10:07, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- Well, teb728 I was surprised at the over-enthusiastic and precipitate deletion by an editor who needs to learn about discretion and courtesy. I do worry about A7 both in and outside mainspace since I have had articles plucked out of my sandbox and published by another editor who didn't mind contravening rules Paul venter (talk) 10:39, 12 February 2019 (UTC).
- Ordinarily, Paul venter, deletion requires an (AFD) discussion or a (PROD) delay, but there are so many worthless pages written that a policy, Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, was created that in certainly narrowly defined circumstances a page could be deleted at sight. A7 is one of those criteria. I'm not saying your article was worthless, but unfortunately it matched the A7 criterion. The deletion of your article was not precipitate: I am surprised it survived for a day or two. And its deletion was not indiscrete or discourteous: dozens of pages are speedily deleted every day. At the present moment 22 pages are nominated for speedy deletion—4 of them for A7. —teb728 t c 11:37, 12 February 2019 (UTC) (BTW, I notice you haven't asked Fram to restore the page yet. - "And its deletion was not indiscrete or discourteous" teb728, I did not say that the deletion was "indiscrete (sic) or discourteous", but rather that the failure to discuss the matter before hurried deletion was lacking in courtesy. Assessment of notability is ultimately a personal call, but in this case the article was not permitted to develop to the point where such an assessment was possible - it was nipped in the bud. You and Fram already know that I would like to have the article restored - I have said so on this very page. "Would someone kindly restore the article so that I can continue. Paul venter (talk) 07:18, 12 February 2019 (UTC)" What is the point of repetition? Paul venter (talk) 14:03, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

<ref></ref>
. A<ref>
tag tells the software that what follows is a citation.</ref>
tells the software that the citation information is finished and what comes after is body content. The problem is that you don't have anything in between the two tags. [edit]I used to be able to disable the auto suggestions in search (aka completion suggester) when I was logged into the wiki system. However, now it appears you cannot turn off this feature anymore?
I detest auto complete and would like to keep it turned off. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ianpeterson74 (talk • contribs) 21:12, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Closing a Wikipedia discussion
[edit]How do we get an administrator (or, whoever) to close out a Wikipedia discussion? I tried asking at the page. And I was told, "It will be closed when someone gets to it." It has been in discussion since about Christmas Day, more or less. The page is here: Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Indefinitely semiprotecting the refdesk. Please advise. Thanks. Joseph A. Amy Hayes (announcer) will u help?
[edit]Dear Wikipedia Community - I had contributor become available (unexpectedly) to help with a title move and edits. Now my page has 2 templates placed by the Below editor Praxidicae. This editor of Wikipedia felt that someone was being paid and that there was a conflict of interest without even discussing. They changed or moved page again,then undid all edits. They were Minor edits and a Photo upload that I needed. It belongs to me. I had no intention of violating. Would you Help me fix the alleged conflict, the alleged paying for templates to the now Amy Hayes (announcer) I did read alot!!! promise, yet I still dont know why I or the other party who was helping me were automatically considered suspicious. Will u review talk message that I have tried to leave for the editor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Hayes_(announcer) Thank you so much! Amy Hayes or HOF2019 (talk) 23:14, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
Amy Hayes (announcer) Help needed Dear Praxidicae, Need Help, please
I am the Subject of article, Amy Hayes & posted for help on my previous page for a Move, Accuracy/Variability updates & add citations. A contributor listed became available, who knows how to edit here and I dont. This was a spontaneous situation where no party was paid, or will be paid. Requested for a page move because no one knows me by my full birth name, therefore the change was necessary as I am known as Amy Hayes a Ring Announcer/Broadcaster and did model. I did look at your edits studied many policies (cur | prev) 22:32, 10 February 2019 Praxidicae (talk | contribs) . . (5,284 bytes) +67 . . (Added

I was in good faith only trying to get help - when it became available, spontaneously, but we did not get to continue .....
Will you assist with the above templates added, that are not applicable to the recent activity, please? May can we identify ourselves to you/Wikipedia) in order to have just those removed and permission to edit?
I only want to make article accurate without the fluff. I believe that it should sound like an encyclopedia as well!
May I please ask your assistance to add my recent photo back? We were going to add Amy at HITZ BOXING 2018
I am including (just below) just 2 sources that would clarify the kind of corrections we were trying to work on such as Active:1995 to Present. start date of 2001 is false and historically inaccurate date! it is merely a year that I had several Big breakthroughs. I announced in 1995 as my official start with Bobby Hitz. Here I am on FOX NEWS Channel as a Ring Announcer. August 2001 (2 parts) no commercials with lots of facts- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cSQc7dlcq0
Thank you! It does say try contacting the editor if something went wrong. I certainly meant no harm and I do not intend on paying anyone. Also wanted to add that I am being inducted into National Boxing Hall of Fame this April 28th. Another Edit we intended to cite/add. I can provide you the link. sincerely, HOF2019 (talk) 22:50, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- HOF2019 Most newcomers to Wikipedia do find it a somewhat complex and bewildering place. I accept that "paid editing" does not apply here. However, "conflict of interest" surely does, and there are two things I urge you to take in:
- We have a policy covering articles about living people. They should be neutral in tone, and all statements in it well-sourced to independent, reliable, published sources (not YouTube).
- The person who is the subject of a Wikipedia article is discouraged from attempting to edit that article: please see our guidance. If they consider the article to be inaccurate or incomplete, they should suggest improvements on the article's talk page, having regard to #1. The Hall of Fame item could be a case in point. If you cite a reputable publication in support of that information I expect it can be accepted. Don't post it here, post it on the talk page.
- As to uploading a photo, unfortunately there are complications here too, to do with copyright regulations. Please see our page on Uploading images: Bhunacat10 (talk), 12:20, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
