Please submit error reports only for content that is currently or will imminently appear on the Main Page. For general discussion about the Main Page, kindly use its talk page. |
National variations of the English language have been extensively discussed previously:
|
To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.
- Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
- Offer a correction if possible.
- References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
- Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 05:43 on 6 January 2025) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
- Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
- Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
- No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
- Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
- Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

[edit]I'm sorry, how exactly can you quantify "uncool dads" in the section about jorts? Is there a scientific consensus how how to measure coolness factor? It's a very sloppy and subjective use of terminology. Just remove it and re-write it as:
"... that jorts (example pictured), are associated with 1960s counterculture, punks, rappers, skaters, and "Brat summer"?
Harizotoh9 (talk) 03:07, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- For me, the reference that allegedly confirms the "uncool dads" sits behind a pay wall, hence I can't get to it to see for myself what it has to say. The primary issue that I have is that it's DYK convention that content that confirms hooks that's offline or behind a pay wall gets copied into the nomination form, so that the reviewers can assess the situation. This hasn't happened in this case. Pinging those involved: Vigilantcosmicpenguin (as nominator), Soulbust (as reviewer), AirshipJungleman29 (as promoter to prep), and RoySmith (as promoter to queue). It is, of course, entirely possible that all these parties can see the source, and the problem is just with those who don't have access to The Wall Street Journal. Schwede66 03:29, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- It's using the Wikipedia voice for something that is hopelessly and will forever be subjective and thus very unencyclopedic. It's like reading a DYK segment that reads "...that Lionel Stevenson's novels are like totally lameo?" Harizotoh9 (talk) 03:35, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I do wonder what the source has to say. Let's see what those who I have pinged have to say about it. Schwede66 03:41, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- I don't have a WSJ subscription, but the snippet of the article that's visible says, "And now, jorts — those frumpy jean shorts worn by beer-clutching dads behind the barbecue — have wormed their way into style". So I don't think the hook is that much of a problem. Frumpy and uncool are pretty much the same thing, but I'll change the word in the hook anyway. RoySmith (talk) 04:05, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- I did have kind of the same concern when suggesting the hook; you're right that it doesn't quite fit with wikivoice. I'll suggest the alternate phrasing of despite their negative association with "dad" style..., which is more directly backed up by the Marie Claire source. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 05:41, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
