Thanks again for the contributions to List of tornadoes in the April 25–28, 2011 tornado outbreak and to its parent article. I'm a little confused, though, because I don't know what source to check to verify the data you're changing. Can you perhaps include a reference? <ref name="foo">http://foo.com/my/path.html</ref> will be sufficient for starters, and if you want to re-use the same reference elsewhere in the article, just mention it by name: <ref name="foo" />. -- ke4roh (talk) 01:43, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited List of tornadoes in the April 25–28, 2011 tornado outbreak, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Gymnasium and Oakwood (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Oklahoma Tornado
I am not going to participate in this revert war any longer. It is Wikiproject Severe Weather policy that if a tornado occurred after midnight but before 1200 UTC, it is counted as part of the previous day and not the new one. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 01:56, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Tornado totals
Before I start reverting edits, I wanted to get your standpoint on the difference in tornado totals across the board. Since the SPC is the final word on the number of tornadoes, the number they give is what we should be using, not the total we come up with by sifting through the NCDC data. By using a number different than them we are in effect synthesizing our own information. I do believe you read through the reports thoroughly enough to trust the numbers you come up with; however, with the sheer number of tornadoes, there's likely something being missed (such as county-crossing tornadoes) that is inflating the totals. If you do clearly find reason to have a higher number (which would take a lot of effort of recompiling reports into a place easily accessible to others) than you should email either Storm Prediction Center and National Climatic Data Center to have the discrepancy resolved. Occasionally there are mistakes in the data input, such as cases where operationally confirmed tornadoes are not entered into the database, where the local National Weather Service office should also be informed to have the details of that event input into the Storm Data server.
Best regards, Cyclonebiskit (talk) 18:22, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- I would relay the information on the additional tornadoes to the SPC and see what they think about it (especially if the additional tornadoes are EF1 or higher). As for the May tornado, although it may have been confirmed by a trained spotter, the final say is by the NWS/SPC/NCDC so if they don't have it, we don't list it. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 22:25, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
April 2012 Outbreak Reversions
Hello, just wondering why you reverted some of my edits. I have noticed that the tornado table is outdated and newer information can be found on the NWS page. I do not fill in the blanks with information that I "pull out of the air" if you will. I DO put research into this subject before I edit, sometimes hours worth. The tornado table list was reverted back to the way I had it, but I left in the other edits you added not related to the table. Anyway if you have any concerns about this subject we can talk it over specifically.
Thanks
Sharkguy05 (talk) 19:09, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Sharkguy05
Oh and also, would you mind and slots in the tornado table for the unrated Dodge City forecast area tornadoes? I'll see if I can dig up some info. Sharkguy05 (talk) 02:13, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Sharkguy05
WP:Accessibility
Please remember that not everyone can see a colour and determine what that colour refers to especially people with Screen readers which is why we have the special symbols TS or whatever on the timelines. I dont like it much but it makes sense.Jason Rees (talk) 02:28, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- I would personally argue that table needs to be chucked in the bin, since it is redundant to the table of contents above. However if we were to keep it i dont think it would allow us to meet the accessibility criteria as i understand them, since everything has to be accessible to all.Jason Rees (talk) 02:53, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- As for the messy timeline, try playing around with the barsetbreaks, im sure you could come up with a decent solution.Jason Rees (talk) 13:49, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
March 17 Cali tornado
The 3/17 CA tornado was only a reported event, not confirmed (both operationally and by the NCDC). If you read through the LSR summary, the source of the tornado report was "Broadcast Media", not the NWS. Therefore, it is not a confirmed event. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 03:15, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
- I get what you're trying to say but we can't research things ourselves per WP:OR. Since the NCDC and SPC have the final official say in this matter we have to take their word for it. If you have a concern that they missed a report, which is entirely possible, just send them and the respective NWS Office an email about it. But for now, we can't really include it as a confirmed tornado without breaching WP:OR Cyclonebiskit (talk) 11:35, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions. I am glad to see that you are discussing a topic. However, as a general rule, talk pages such as Talk:2012 Aurora shooting are for discussion related to improving the article, not general discussion about the topic. If you have specific questions about certain topics, consider visiting our reference desk and asking them there instead of on article talk pages. Thank you. Article of the month – 2010 Carfax 400, a Good Article
The 2010 Carfax 400 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race that was held on August 15, 2010 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. Contested over 200 laps, it was the twenty-third race of the 2010 Sprint Cup Series season. The race was won by Kevin Harvick for the Richard Childress Racing team. Denny Hamlin finished second, and Carl Edwards, who started twenty-fourth, clinched third. Pole position driver Kasey Kahne maintained his lead into the first corner to begin the race, but Jimmie Johnson, who started in the second position on the grid, took the lead before the first lap was over. Afterward, Greg Biffle became the leader, and would eventually lead to the race high of 66 laps. Tony Stewart led after the final pit stops, ahead of Hamlin and Harvick. Harvick helped Hamlin to become the leader, but with twelve laps left, Harvick gained on Hamlin and claimed the first position with eleven lap remaining. Harvick maintained his position to claim his first Sprint Cup victory at Michigan International Speedway. There were five cautions and nineteen lead changes among nine different drivers throughout the course of the race, Harvick's third win of the season. The result maintained the first position in the Drivers' Championship and clinched him a position in the Chase. He remained 293 points ahead of second place driver Jeff Gordon and 353 ahead of Denny Hamlin. Chevrolet maintained its lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, thirty points ahead of Toyota and sixty-one ahead of Ford, with thirteen races remaining in the season. A total of 105,000 people attended the race, while 4.917 million watched it on television. I'm pretty close to finished on the Hackleburg tornado sandbox, but I'd like a second opinion on any final changes before putting it up. WikiCup 2012 August newsletter
The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
- Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
- Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
- Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
- Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
- Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
- Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.
However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), Ealdgyth (submissions), Calvin999 (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), The Bushranger (submissions) and 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.
On the subject of next year, a discussion has been opened here. Come and have your say about the competition, and how you'd like it to run in the future. This brainstorming will go on for some time before more focused discussions/polls are opened. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! - Back on topic here, can we put the 12-hour format or not? CRRaysHead90 | Get Some! 03:58, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
- My understanding is UTC is a time zone not a time format. So why is 12-hour format forbidden? Not everyone in the world uses the 24-hour format. I also don't see any defining MOS on either project's project page. CRRaysHead90 | Get Some! 07:17, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Article of the month – 2010 Sylvania 300
The 2010 Sylvania 300 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race held on September 19, 2010, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. The 300 lap race was the twenty-seventh in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as well as the first race in the ten-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, which ends the season. Clint Bowyer, of the Richard Childress Racing team, won the race, with Denny Hamlin finishing second, and Jamie McMurray third. Pole position driver Brad Keselowski maintained his lead in the first lap, but in the second lap Tony Stewart pulled ahead. Chase for the Sprint Cup participants Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, and Hamlin were in the top ten for most of the race, but in the closing laps all of them suffered spins or other problems. Hamlin was the only one to recover and finish in the top five. With two laps remaining, Tony Stewart was leading the race when he ran out of fuel, giving the lead to Bowyer, who also led the most laps in the race with 176. There were eight cautions and twenty-three lead changes among eight different drivers during the race. The race was Clint Bowyer's first win in the 2010 season, and the third of his career. The result advanced Bowyer to second in the Drivers' Championship, thirty-five points behind Hamlin and ten ahead of Kevin Harvick, but because of a penalty three days after the race, he fell to twelfth in the standings. Chevrolet maintained its lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, thirty-two points ahead of Toyota and seventy-four ahead of Ford, with nine races remaining in the season. A total of 95,000 people attended the race, while 3.68 million watched it on television. WikiCup 2012 September newsletter
We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Sasata (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.
It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!
The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Article of the month – Tim Richmond - a Good Article
Tim Richmond (June 7, 1955 – August 13, 1989) was an American race car driver from Ashland, Ohio. He competed in IndyCar racing before transferring to NASCAR's Winston Cup Series (now Sprint Cup Series). Richmond was one of the first drivers to change from open wheel racing to NASCAR stock cars full-time, which has since become an industry trend. He won the 1980 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year award and had 13 victories during eight NASCAR seasons. Richmond achieved his top NASCAR season in 1986 when he finished third in points. He won seven races that season, more than any other driver on the tour. When he missed the season-opening Daytona 500 in February 1987, media reported that he had pneumonia. The infection most likely resulted from his compromised immune system, which was weakened by AIDS. The disease drastically shortened his life. Despite the state of his health, Richmond competed in eight races in 1987, winning two events and one pole position before his final race in August of that year. He attempted a comeback in 1988 before NASCAR banned him for testing positive for a banned substance; after NASCAR insisted on access to his entire medical record before reinstating him, Richmond withdrew from racing. NASCAR later stated their original test was inaccurate. Richmond grew up in a wealthy family and lived a freewheeling lifestyle, earning him the nickname "Hollywood". In describing Richmond's influence in racing, Charlotte Motor Speedway president Humpy Wheeler said: "We've never had a race driver like Tim in stock car racing. He was almost a James Dean-like character." When Richmond was cast for a bit part in the 1983 movie Stroker Ace, "He fell right in with the group working on the film," said director Hal Needham. Cole Trickle, the main character in the movie Days of Thunder, played by Tom Cruise, was loosely based on Richmond and his interaction with Harry Hyde and Rick Hendrick. - So it's OK to act as a news site and paste bare URLs into an article? Can you point to the policy that states this please? Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 18:59, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- I've added a RfC on the talk page. Please do not restore the bare URLs until the matter is sorted. Thanks. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 19:03, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, I can't see the bit that states using bare URLs are OK. Can you point that out to me? I do see the text at the top that clearly states "This advice is not a formal Wikipedia policy or guideline", however WP:NOTNEWS is. The RfC has been raised. Thanks. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 19:09, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- And I think this is incredibly bad faith. It's for OBVIOUS spammers - please remove it and apologise. Thanks. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 19:14, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
Frankenstorm
When we have an article that's getting as much attention as Sandy is right now, removing a section and just saying, "for the last time, if you think this should be included, discuss it on the talk page" isn't really helping the situation. Sure, we have a lot of non-project users editing the page, but that doesn't mean the burden of proof should be switched to them. If you have a problem with a section, as long as it's somewhat relevant and sourced, it's typically best to leave it there; then you can take the high road and take it to the talk page. But getting argumentative in edit summaries isn't helping anyone or the article. Inks.LWC (talk) 04:49, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Post-Tropical Cyclone
Shouldn't that[3] be "Post-tropical storm", or "tropical storm"? Or simply "Sandy"? Apteva (talk) 23:08, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- It is best to go by what the NHC says. In this case it is "Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy". United States Man (talk) 23:12, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- That is geek speak though. For the article it should use terms that real people understand, and normal capitalization. "post-tropical cyclone" is not a part of the name, as most people would understand the name. Sandy is the name. Apteva (talk) 23:19, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Cyclone itself is geek speak. While hurricanes and cyclones are just two different names for the same type of storm, no one in the United States uses cyclone. Apteva (talk) 23:22, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- What does the H in NHC stand for? Apteva (talk) 23:23, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Well, that's not my fault. If you want it to be different then you need to contact the NHC. Unless the NHC refers to it differently then it needs to stay the same. United States Man (talk) 23:24, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Do you see "Post-Tropical Cyclone" anywhere in this article?[4]. "Storm" does just fine for readers. Apteva (talk) 23:34, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Do you realize that you just gave a link to an unofficial source. As I have already said, whatever the NHC goes by is what we will go by. United States Man (talk) 23:39, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes. WP prefers secondary, not primary sources. Apteva (talk) 00:16, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
- This is one of those cases in which WP:IAR may apply. If we relied on news media for updates then these hurricane articles would be quite a mess. United States Man (talk) 00:19, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
By the way, can you keep tabs on the fatalities? This edit[5] added to the U.S. total with no reference, and did not correct the total, and the total did not agree with the sum even before this I think. Apteva (talk) 00:22, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but I will stick to updating the infobox for now. Too much edit conflicting for me. United States Man (talk) 00:26, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.
- The featured article award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for four featured articles in the final round.
- The good article award also goes to Grapple X (submissions), for 19 good articles in the second round.
- The list award goes to Muboshgu (submissions), for three featured lists in the final round.
- The topic award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for three good topics (with around 40 articles) in round 4.
- The did you know award goes to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), for well over 100 DYKs in the final round.
- The news award goes to ThaddeusB (submissions), for 10 in the news items in round 3.
- The picture award goes to Grandiose (submissions), for two featured pictures in round 2.
- The reviewer award goes to both Ruby2010 (submissions) (14 reviews in round 1) and Grandiose (submissions) (14 reviews in round 3).
- Finally, for achieving an incredible bonus point total in the final round, and for bringing the top-importance article frog to featured status, a biostar has been awarded to Cwmhiraeth (submissions).
Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.
Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. It's been a pleasure to work with you all, and we hope to see you all in January! J Milburn (talk • email) and The ed17 (talk • email) 00:48, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

List of United States disasters by death toll
I would like your opinion on a matter regarding the List of United States disasters by death toll. Currently the disaster type for all tornado-related events is listed as "tornado" whether the even in question was a single tornado or an outbreak. I think this is a bit misleading, especially for events where no single tornado accounted for the majority of the deaths. Do you think there should be a distinction between the two in the article? I posted this query in the article's talk page back in June but never received any response. TornadoLGS (talk) 05:09, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Winter Storm Athena
Remember how I created that article on the United States winter storms? Well, Winter Storm Athena has officially formed on the east coast. I was wondering if we could maybe restore it? Since this naming thing has taken off, then can we make a season article for it? Or should we just stick with Athena's article until a few more have formed? ST✪12 01:39, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
- I have started a thread on Athena's talk page regarding a possible move/merge and would value your input on the matter. TornadoLGS (talk) 07:35, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Incorrect use of Rollback
Constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, but a recent edit that you made has been reverted or removed because it was a misuse of a warning or blocking template. Please use the user warnings sandbox for any tests you may want to do, or take a look at our introduction page to learn more about contributing to the encyclopedia. Thank you.
Also, your recent rollback on the nor'easter article is inappropriate. There was no vandalism. There shouldn't have been a rollback. Be warned now, as another inappropriate rollback/undo/warning and I will take this to AN/I. Thank you.

Article of the month – 2010 Ford 400, a Good Article
The 2010 Ford 400 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race that was held on November 21, 2010 at Homestead Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida. The 267 lap race was the thirty-sixth in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as well as the final race in the ten-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, which ends the season. The race was won by Carl Edwards for the Roush Fenway Racing team. Jimmie Johnson finished second, and Kevin Harvick clinched third. Pole position driver Kasey Kahne maintained his lead on the first lap of the race. Edwards started in the second position on the grid, and became the leader of the race on the fourth lap. Shortly after a restart on lap 22, championship leader Denny Hamlin spun sideways, resulting with damage to his splitter. Martin Truex, Jr. took the lead on lap 73, but after the final pit stops Edwards was first. He maintained the lead to win the race, having led it for 192 laps. A total of 67,000 people attended the race, while 5.605 million watched it on television. There were ten cautions in the race, as well as twenty-five lead changes among nine different drivers. Edwards' victory was his second win in the 2010 season, with the first coming the previous week at the Kobalt Tools 500. Jimmie Johnson won the Drivers' Championship, 39 points ahead of Denny Hamlin. Johnson's team owner Rick Hendrick won the Owners' Championship. Chevrolet won the Manufacturer Championship with 261 points, 44 points ahead of Toyota. Hello, USA Man. Greetings from Hong Kong, and i just want to stop in and remind you that, i do not want the whole of cyclone articles of Wikipedia to have images uploaded by me, but to give the best, most natural and true, non- fake images on Wikipedia. That is what it means to me, to give the best to Wikipedia. Also Wikipedia is a place for everyone to share, upload and edit, so it's not about dominating my images, it's about giving the best. United States Man, I appreciate your interest, but please leave the unblock request to the admins. First of all, you commented in the wrong place (inside the template), and second, your comment, while in itself not incorrect, can be interpreted as doing little more than increasing the metaphorical temperature on that talk page. This person, if they keep editing in the same vein, is going to run into a brick wall all by themselves--see WP:ROPE for instance. At the same time, usually admins are concerned with applying the rules fairly, and usually that is done best in a calmer environment. As a non-admin, you can't decide on an unblock request anyway, and the commentary only reinforces the blocked editor that the old conspiracy theory deemed true by so many disruptors is in fact real. Not nonsense. First, it's coherent, which rules CSD nonsense out. Second, there IS an 80/20 principle (which I first came across when studying systems analysis). There's probably an article on it somewhere already. Peridon (talk) 20:54, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

We need to talk
Yes we do. First off, rude things like "nonsense" are not nescessary. A constructive way to handle it would be to do a simple search, realize I am correct, and add your own citations. And my information about the Milton tornado was correct. If you didn't like my citation change, the fix it, instead of rudely reverting it. You do not own this website. Let others contribute, and work on your trust issues. Everything I post is verifiable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.58.26.140 (talk) 20:40, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
Also I just realized your summary of the Mobile tornado is not cited whatsoever. 184.58.26.140 (talk) 21:09, 21 December 2012 (UTC)Sharkguy05
You failed to place a single inline citation in the summary. You instead put them in the box that is specifically for the NWS links. And there you go with the rudeness
184.58.26.140 (talk) 21:20, 21 December 2012 (UTC)sharkguy05
I guess I can be a nice guy and put my citations in the grey box if thats what you want, because you seem to be under the impression that inline citations are "wrong". I really don't like this awkward conflict, so next time just tell me to fix something when I forget, instead of reverting. I will fix it. 184.58.26.140 (talk) 21:24, 21 December 2012 (UTC)Sharkguy05
Then tell me where info such as damage info from media sources will go? I am just trying to figure out how you want this done so I won't have to deal with this anymore. 184.58.26.140 (talk) 21:54, 21 December 2012 (UTC)Sharkguy05
It is true. There are pictures of the flipped cars and destroyed gas station damage widely available. The NWS writeup missed a lot of specifics. Media can count when there are verifiable pics of the damage. http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/viewart/20121221/NEWS02/312210002/COLUMNISTS http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/usworld/article/288024/6/Damage-from-possible-tornado-reported-in-Mobile-Ala — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sharkguy05 (talk • contribs) 22:12, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Article of the month – Daytona International Speedway
Daytona International Speedway is a race track in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States. Since opening in 1959, it has been the home of the Daytona 500, the most prestigious race in NASCAR. In addition to NASCAR, the track also hosts races of ARCA, AMA Superbike, Grand-Am and Motocross. The track features multiple layouts including the primary 2.5 miles (4.0 km) high speed tri-oval, a 3.56 miles (5.73 km) sports car course, a 2.95 miles (4.75 km) motorcycle course, and a .25 miles (0.40 km) karting and motorcycle flat-track. The track's 180-acre (73 ha) infield includes the 29-acre (12 ha) Lake Lloyd, which has hosted powerboat racing. The speedway is owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation. The track was built in 1958 by NASCAR founder William France Sr. to host racing that was being held at the former Daytona Beach Road Course. His banked design permitted higher speeds and gave fans a better view of the cars. Lights were installed around the track in 1998, and today it is the third largest single lit outdoor sports facility. The speedway has been renovated three times, with the infield renovated in 2004, and the track repaved in 1978 and 2010.
