Just wanted to take a second to welcome you to Wikipedia. Thoughtful, fact-based questioning like yours at Ernest Dowson is much appreciated around here. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. (The Dowson article is a good place to start -- it needs some sprucing up!) If you have questions or if I can ever help you, don't hesitate to contact me. · Katefan0(scribble) 04:37, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the encouragement. I've started by adding a little on Dowson's death, but don't have Jad Adam's book with me at the moment. I presume my addition is non-controversial. It looks like we need a page on Robert Sherard, I'll make a start on that as well. — Stumps 10:24, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
It was just fine, not controversial at all, but it's good that you're trying to keep that in mind. Remember to be bold, but not reckless! · Katefan0(scribble) 14:46, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

Nice work. I'm going to look over my bookshelves this weekend and see what I can add. It would be nice to see the article end up on W:FAC. Filiocht | The kettle's on

I haven't forgotten this, just lack of time. Nice to see someone doing such good work in 20th century poetry. Filiocht | The kettle's on 11:04, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words and the reminder about The Waste Land ... I've been meaning to add some stuff for a while ... will do soon. —Stumps 13:06, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Sadly, I can give you nothing on Murin. I occasionally go to List of poets and Google a redlink name from there. Depending on what I find, I'll remove the name (vanity) or create a stub. As I was dependant on English-language Google hits, I could get very little on him. Sorry not to be of more help. Filiocht | The kettle's on 13:30, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Bravo on your edits to uncle Alfred's page. May I inquire... what your interest in him is? XSG 05:02, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

It's only a general interest in artistic and literary 'scenes' and how so much of the vital activity doesn't actually come from the big names that make it onto syllabuses, but from more 'minor' figures. Somehow I noticed the page, and then discovered that he appeared in the index of a lot of the books on my shelf, and I became more and more interested as I worked on the article. — Stumps 08:27, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Poetry Wikiproject

The wikiproject looks inactive. Looking at the history, the last message before mine was an edit in November and the dit before that was in August. Additionally, the discussion pages look dormant with comments posted without responses. From the WikiProject page, "A Wikiproject is designed to co-ordinate the efforts of several users, and to allow a group of conceptually related pages to have similar structures and appearance." I don't see any collaboration between users... However, if you'd still like I can (or you can) remove the inactive tag on the wikiproject. Gflores Talk 21:18, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

I'll try to contribute, though I seem to have a lot less time than I used to. - Poetlister 17:06, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
I have a list of poets to do brief biographies of to start things going. E-mail me and I'll send it. - Poetlister 13:29, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: Nabokov and Bely

Nabokov is just a dwarf compared to the genuine giants of prose like Bely and Joyce. Unfortunately, very little of the former is available online. Modern people are after cheap stuff like Bulgakov and T.S.E :) I believe his major work on poetics is Медный Всадник как диалектика ритма in which he analyzes the rythmic structure of the Bronze Horseman line by line, but even our regional library lacks the book. I enjoyed reading his Мастерство Гоголя almost as much as the last volume of his reminiscences: this is the most meticulous study of a text that I've ever seen. I even copied a table which served Bely to compare the occurence of colour epithets in all the works of Gogol. He picked up every colour epithet found in Gogol's books and compiled a chronology of Gogol's colour evolution, showing how the colours mentioned by him most frequently did reflect his psychological state at any given period of his career. There was also a detailed, memorable comparison of Karamzin's, Pushkin's and Gogol's phrase to architectural styles. P.S. My favourite English-language poets are Marvell, Hardy, and Yeats. What are your recommendations? --Ghirla | talk 23:23, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Bely's later works are out of print. As for the Symbolism articles, they get reprinted now and then. I even happen to own a copy but it's a hopeless task to find it among thousands volumes in my domestic library now that I move to a new house and my books are packed in boxes. When I unpack the boxes and find it, I'll let you know.
Keats, Coleridge, Frost, Auden are among my favourites, but Donne is too intellectual for my liking and I have trouble to follow his knotty syntax. By the way, I was recently surprised not to find the articles on Miss Gee and A Toccata of Galuppi's in Wikipedia. Hopefully, this will be amended soon.
As for modern Russian poetry (I think you talk about living writers), I would single out Bella Akhmadulina in Moscow and Alexander Kushner in St Petersburg, although Brodsky is obviously the most powerful voice to have emerged after WWII. By the way, I just spotted an anon's notice on Talk:Zaum and am at a loss as to how to respond. My interests lie with prose rather than poetry, so I hope you'll give a more adequate answer to his query. --Ghirla | talk 17:10, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. I have put it on the talk page of the article. I agree with your arguments and removed the notability tag from the article. Thanks for you polite and informative explanation abakharev 10:51, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Poetry

Yes, I'm still interested.Kdammers 10:23, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'd like to see a discussion of Austrian poets (esp. ca. 1890-1930). There are some good works on this subject, but I don't have access to them any more. I'd also like to see more work on classic and contemporary Korean poets. Cross-reading poetry, children's' poetry (what's there now is a pittance and only about one side of the coin), and Ethiopian (ahmharic/Ge'ez) poetry (I only could find an article on Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin) are areas I'd like to see developed. I would like to see the articles on e-poetry and the sonnet improved or expanded. Kdammers 04:54, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Stumps: As I mentioned above, I do not currently have access to works of Austrian poets. If we can't activate some-one with access to a good german-language library, i can try searching on the Internet, including the German Wik. Kdammers 07:49, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

I just scanned through the German Wik, and the only poet I found listed was Lorenz Leopold Haschka, (1749 - 1827). Well, that's a start. Here are some others from various sources on the Net - but I don't know most of them and cannot vouch for their importance. Wolfgang Bauer (contemporary); Hans Carl Artmann (June 12 1921 - December 4 2000), Ingeborg Bachmann (June 25, 1926 - October 17, 1973) (She, of course, is very well known but is already in Wik.}, Erich Fried (1921-88 - Well, I've heard of him - he's noteworthy), Franz Seraphicus Grillparzer (January 15, 1791 - January 21, 1872), Enst Jandl (very clever dadaist), Peter Rosegger (31 July 1843 - 26 June 1918), Adalbert Stifter (23 October 1805 - 28 January 1868), Georg Trakl (February 3, 1887 - November 3, 1914 - a leading poet). Also: Nikolaus Lenau (Britannica online), Diane Broeckhoven, Paul Celan (very famous - probably in Wik, but I can't check while working in this text-box), Zedlitz, Joseph Christian von (1790-1862), Stefan Zweig (very famous dramatist who also wrote some poetry the quality and importance of which I cannot say), Lilian Faschinger (contemporary), Friederike Mayröcker (contemp. leading experimentalist; Jandl's companion?), Raoul Schrott (contemp.), Peter Waterhouse (contemp.), Josef Weinheber (Britan. online), Evelyn Schlag (contemp.), Noebius (19th century). Unfortunately, I didn't come across more than one or two of my favorites from around the turn of the century - and I can't recall their names. There is a book of 'forgotten Austrian poets,' if I'm not mistaken. This would be a good source to check.

Jacopone da Todi

Hi Stumps, i have created an article about Jacopone da Todi. Jacopone is Umbria's greatest religious poet after St. Francis and i would like to turn it into a great article, but i am afraid my linguistic and technical skills are limited. Maybe a native speaker can give it a look? --Wikipedius 21:22, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your input, it is floor, not ceiling, it was my mistake, not the sources'. I reviewed the text and answered your questions as best as i could on the discussion page. Jacopone/Iacopone is a mystic and his position is uncompromising: hell/heaven, black/white, no middle ground, no Purgatory, he believes in predestination. This is his simple philosophy. --Wikipedius 22:33, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: Turkish literature peer review

Hello. I've noticed that you have an interest in literature (specifically, poetry), and that is why I am leaving you a message. I have recently entirely rewritten the Turkish literature article with a view to getting it up to Featured Article status, and have placed the article up for peer review. If you could possibly take the time to look at and review the article, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, thank you for taking the time to read this message. Saposcat 10:22, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Re: Poetry Project

Thanks for the welcome to the poetry project. My areas of interest are pretty broad, I suppose: obviously Turkish poetry (which, by the way, is fairly woefully represented on Wikipedia at the moment—something I hope to have a hand in correcting), but also French poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries (currently I'm hoping to expand, in particular, on Henri Michaux, a particular favorite), poetic form(s), and probably some other random stuff as well.

As for what I'd like to see the project achieve, I think one of its most noble goals (if you will) is one that, as far as I can tell, it already has: structural standardization of poetry-related articles. Besides that, I haven't thought about it too much, but of course I'll let you know if anything comes to mind.

Also, thanks for the quick response (and compliments) about the Turkish literature article. I realize its length is probably a bit excessive, but (as I said on its talk page and also on its peer review), until such time as the offshoot articles get expanded upon (another pet project of mine), it's about the only detailed thing going in the way of Turkish literature on Wikipedia; hence, it's really long (though still just under that 50KB upper limit).

Thanks again. Saposcat 12:02, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Page move for Fernanda sena

When moving a page to a different title, please use the "move" tab at the top of the screen (between "history" and "watch"). If you just do a cut and paste, as you did on this article, the edit history on the page doesn't get carried over. If you use the "Move" function, the history gets moved along with the page. I was wondering if you could help me out on the poetry portal. My formatting skills are nonexistent, so right now it is in a state of disarray. Thanks Adambiswanger1 16:47, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Are you doing what I think you're doing?

And setting up a full blown poetry time-line? That is one enormous project. Sam 16:48, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

I'll try to add a few where I can. I wouldn't mind having a few more centuries to work with (or even Millenia, as I've been on a bit of a tear through the ancients and medievals of late). Sam 21:28, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

I've gotten back to this and done some work on awards in recent years. Could you look at the years from 2003 in poetry through 2005 in poetry, and see if you see other awards we should add to the list. It is going to be much easier to set up and do once than to add bits and pieces later on. Thanks, Sam 01:09, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

I've put on a speedy tag on the page you created for 3th century in poetry for the typo and created a new page 3rd century in poetry instead. Dweller 11:04, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Poetry FAC

I've put the Poetry article up as a Featured Article Candidate, and one of the comments was that more cites and references are needed. I've been adding a bunch of my favorites, and sticking in cites where I have them, but the article could profit from others' perspectives. If you could chip in a bit, I'd appreciate it. I'd also like to get your views on the Poetic Forms section, where it's been suggested that the section either be lengthened or refactored. Thanks, Sam 13:40, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for catching the PDSA article link. I didn't notice that the link didn't lead to the Shewhart cycle article. PDSA should have a redirect to PDCA, Shewhart cycle, Deming cycle. I am new to Wikipedia and don't know how to work with redirects. There is a difference between PDSA and PDCA. Study is used to maintain the original intent of Dr. Shewhart in the cycle being a learning method based on the Scientific Method. Check implies only that the desired results occurred and that potential learning may be overlooked. The origin of Shewhart's concept is in epistemology and the work of C. I. Lewis. Shewhart was presenting a theory of knowledge. The Shewhart cycle article doesn't cover these issues and needs some work. There are some issues on OR as the history of the differences has not had much coverage. Shewhart never used PDCA which seems to have originated in Japan in the 1950s/1960s. Shewhart did not use PDSA. Deming insisted on PDSA as opposed to PDCA to focus on Shewhart's original intent of learning. To add to the confusion some call the cycle the Deming cycle. Deming never used that term as he always called it the Shewhart cycle. Leaders100 20:14, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

July language corner

A few ideas for the language corner: the Alliterative verse is a very good and substantive article. In the short but sweet category, there has been recent work on Villanelle and I was looking at the article on Nabokov's Notes on Prosody and thought they were interesting. Sam 13:51, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

If you just leave a bit of input on what direction you think this should head in, so I don't feel like I'm totalling taking it over, I can then set up the next coupld months. Sam 14:16, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Callow et alt.

I don't have Callow, Erickson, Gayford - and Arnold (I guess reference is to Wilfried N. - not to Matthias). I have the German translation of Wilfried N. differing in pagination, but I'll get along, if my guess is right. (Is this English, probably not!) Anyway, I would propose links to a letter, if information comes from such a unique, identifiable source. On the other hand, links to an author or an individual opinion should refer to a book or an essay.

In the VG timeline I've already fixed those links, where the source was obvious. For the rest, I count on your support.

In the main text it's much more difficult for me, to verify the sources, and probably more important in the end, to see if they are valid. This applies especially to Ken Wilkie: Not one source is given, though it's easy to show that his "interviews" mainly recall information published years and decades before, and his further "discoveries" have been toned down in serious recent publications. Wilkie is a journalist, sex & crime are his business - I wasted much time with people like him.

You see it's good that you are back. And by the way, your VG-template is brilliant. --R.P.D. 20:08, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

No problem with the Van Gogh template! I trust my template-making ability more than my writing style, so I don't know how much I can help on the actual Vincent van Gogh article. If I can just let me know!

You guys are doing an excellent job on the van Gogh article. I've never seen the book by Wilkie so I can't comment on it, but that seems to be the snag for you guys getting that page to FA status. Good luck and thanks again! Dafoeberezin3494 04:24, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Question

Hey, I noticed you posted the following question on the talk page of a copyright article: "from http://www.wurzergallery.com/artist/muller.html. I'm not sure of the procedure yet." The way to do it is add {{db-copyvio|(URL of the original material that was copied)}}, which, in this case would have been {{db-copyvio|http://www.wurzergallery.com/artist/muller.html)}}. You can read more about speedy deletion and copyright violations here. Cheers, Daniel.Bryant 07:20, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

I deleted the article as a copyvio. Please let me know if you spot any more. Tyrenius 13:00, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: your puzzlement by the summary of my recent edit to Melbourne

According to this putting punctuation marks within inverted commas when they are not part of the quote is the American style. It's interesting that you write that you are "pretty sure that at least in older editions of the Australian government Style Manual it was specified that commas should go inside the quotes." I'm not aware of any non-American style guides ever to recommend this ... however, I'm not exactly the World's leading expert on style guides.

You write that you "too happen to prefer the comma outside". That makes three of us: you, I and Wikipedia's Manual of Style. You write that "it seems more logical". It is more logical ... it's logical whereas the alternative is not. This, as far as I can make out, is why Manual of Style along with most of the World minus the USA (or so I thought) prefers it.

You write that "The labelling of this style of punctuation as 'American' also struck" you "as a bit antagonistic." All right, fair call. In future edit summaries I'll refrain from labelling it as such. Instead I'll just do what I usually do and either mark the edit as minor (which it really is) or not that I'm editing to comply with Wikipedia's Manual of Style. --Jimp 05:45, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Herbert

Thaks for your message. Yes, these are words of Herbert; once he gave a talk at an "Odra" meeting. Then the text was included as a preface to a volume of his poetry ("golden hardback edition" by Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy, one of major Polish editors).

With the PL template you could be interested in the original text. I'll post it here as soon as I'm back home. I included my own translation (should I mention it in that case as editor's translation?). Feel free to adjust the text (translation wasn't so evident, you'll see!) and, if you find it useful, to improve the description of the source. Best, Beaumont 11:26, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Paul Sérusier

Hi, I moved Paul Sérusier to where it should be, but I discovered a bigger problem: the article seems to be a copyvio from [1], which doesn't look like a Wikipedia mirror. Since you seem knowledgeable about the area, you might be interesting in rewriting the article from scratch and attributing the sources properly or resolving the situation anyway. Romanization of Cyrillic

I'm undecided on what romanization and what phonetics are necessary. Initially, I argued that because the article title was likely to be a common romanization, it would be useful to have a standard one (I was using the UN one) after the Cyrillic transcription, but someone's gone round quite a few of my articles and removed it. I can understand the argument that it just clutters the article, and you're only likely to read the standard romanization if you can read Cyrillic in the first place, therefore rendering it unnecessary. So perhaps the romanization can go, except in cases where the title is not a romanization of any sort, e.g. "Ural Mountains" or something. As for IPA, I don't know how to enter IPA, so I've never been able to edit any of those. I can read IPA for languages with which I'm familiar, but I wouldn't be much help on Russian, I'm afraid. What do you think about abandoning standard romanization altogether? DTOx 03:37, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Blank Verse

I notice you reverted my intro essay on blank verse. True, it strayed off the definition. Guilty! But is the reversion much better? Notice all the history still in the intro. Anyway, be that as it may, it stung me that you mocked my reference to an English department document. Since when is a university publication — conveniently online — invalid? Perhaps my style of citation is too busy (again, guilty!), but cite we must, otherwise this Wikipedia can easily degenerate into a forum for lame or loony opinions. But maybe the standard footnotes, which make the text so choppy, can be replaced with something more graceful. Suggestions? — Jrmccall 22:29, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I was for a while busy with other things. Today, when I had a look on the van Gogh-page, I was astonished to find a lacuna for the decisive months in his biographhy: the Borinage episode. I am not sure whether this was never part of the biography, or was it deleted and not restored? --RPD 18:02, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

Well done, but don't you think that it would be time to protect this very long page which is almost every day the aim of vandalism, at least against revisions from users not locked in? --RPD 19:44, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and "Wikipedia is not for things made up in school one day"). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. When I noticed you editing Dagny Juel and creating an article on Adolf Paul yesterday, I hurried to post an old sketch for an article on Zum schwarzen Ferkel, in order not to let you beat me to it. :-)

Pre-Columbian what-have-you

Hi. I see you reverted my change of 'aka' in one of the headings of Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. I must admit I didn't check to see if it was directly linked from elsewhere; apologies if that was the nature of the gaffe. Assuming otherwise, I'd like to explain the rationale of my change a little more clearly than my admittedly rather glib edit summary did: I felt that 'aka' was a little too colloquial, and possibly not entirely clear to all readers ... Wiktionary, for example, gives the correct usage as A.K.A. which would be clearer, but I still feel it is not necessary to use this abbreviation at all, bearing in mind that we should of course explain jargon, even where (or perhaps especially where) the jargon is incidental to the topic of the article. I had thought 'and' was an adequate alternative as it is indeed only a hypothesis that the two names refer to the same person, but other possibilities include the full 'also known as' or perhaps the word 'alias'. Quoting from WP:BETTER#Think_of_the_reader ... "Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia. The people who read it have different backgrounds, education and worldview from you. Try to make your article accessible to as many of them as possible." I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this. Stumps 14:14, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey, sorry, I entirely missed your comment from several weeks back. I hadn't meant to revert your "and" back to "aka", I only meant to remove a randomly-inserted "C.E." I'm not sure what happened. You're quite right, I don't think "A.K.A." or any variant should be used; it's not very encyclopedic and potentially confusing. I changed it to and. Thanks for pointing it out, it's the little things that make the difference!--Cúchullain t/c 22:28, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Pyramid frustum for Moscow papyrus 14.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Pyramid frustum for Moscow papyrus 14.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Hill

Hi Stumps - I do have a named account. It's ZephyrAnycon. I just wasn't logged in when I made that contribution. Why is Tiptoety saying my edits were not 'constructive'? I find that unbelievable: obviously all my edits were made in constructive spirit, if they did not conform to Wikipedia policy by the letter. It surprises & saddens me that anything of what I added to that page might be dubbed 'vandalism'. Does Tiptoety have any sense of what is good writing, and what isn't?

Stumps, Geoffrey Hill's a tricky one. There's a lot of criticism & little 'research'. No biography, for example. Question is: why is citing the opinions of critics much more encyclopedic than original research? Many poetry articles here tend to be anthologies of the standard critical arguments, & the proportion of representation of one view to others, even the order in which they're put, is as easily conducive to tendentiousness as the publication of (important distinction) unreferenced but well-evidenced criticism. Best way forward I think would be a chronological account of his career, describing the contents & notable details of each book &, crucially, quoting lines of poetry from them. Because to let the reader decide for herself is to escape bias, right? —ZephyrAnycon 01:28, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
I was wading not drowning :)
And I think the importance of judicious & succinct quotation in poetry articles cannot be emphasised enough. —ZephyrAnycon 06:06, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Having thought about it, I don't think it'd be a good idea to devote an article to each of his books. Are there policy guidelines relating to this as well? I think it would be very much preferable to make a detailed account of the books the beef or centerpiece of the main article. They don't yet or we don't yet know if they warrant their own pages, though I congratulate for your work on Without Title. —ZephyrAnycon 00:50, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Stumps, I nominated Imagism for a FA review due to its lack of in-line citations. You're one of the major contributors, so I thought I'd let you know. It only mentions one of the authors listed in the reference section. I trust it and its' well-written, but the information should be sourced. Thanks for your work on the article.-DMCer 16:30, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know, and I'll chip in some cites. I've been busy, and only check in on wiki once a week or so to make sure no untoward deleting or wholesale damage is being done, so I appreciate the note. A Musing 14:00, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: Imagism

Sorry, despite all the edits I've made to poetry articles, I don't have either the knowledge or resources to add substantively to the article. I did some style editing to one section and I might do a bit more of that, but it won't really help with adding sources. My focus with poetry articles has been largely grunt work. I'll look among what books I have to see if any are on the References list or if I have something that could be used for citations, but probably not. Best of luck with it. Noroton 20:29, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I've come back to the iambic pentameter article (a little later than I expected to) and have been looking at the systems of scansion question in that article again. I'm teaching it for the next few weeks, so I expect I'll be dabbling in that and similar articles for a bit; I'll try to introduce a more practice-orientated angle to supplement what's there already. From my quick glance at the talk page, I think I'm right in saying that you didn't object to adopting a different notation in the article, and suggested the ictus and breve? That one is fine, but second-preference with me; I'd prefer this:

 ˘   ⋀     ˘    ⋀      ˘     ⋀  ˘   ⋀  ˘    ⋀
But SOFT! What LIGHT through YONder WINdow BREAKS?

My reasoning is to do with an actor glancing at a page quickly and facilitating an intuitive apprehension, mostly. I know it's probably not the most widespread notation in the academy.

Do you have strong feelings either way? I thought I'd hold off on an edit until I'd run it by you.

Regards, DionysosProteus 01:00, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I don't really have a sense of how widely/narrowly the different systems are used, so ictus and breve sounds like the best candidate. I've been slowly trying to unpack the intro in a way that doesn't demand separate articles for classical/English use; will put it up shortly. Regards, DionysosProteus 12:52, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Hello again. I've not yet got to the notation thing, but I've had a stab at re-working the intro to make it more 'general-user' friendly. When you get a moment, it'd be good to hear any comments, or if you're up for it, see it improved. Thanks, DionysosProteus 03:41, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Notability of Victor Selwyn

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Victor Selwyn, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Victor Selwyn seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Victor Selwyn, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Llewellyn Jones

Concerning Llewellyn Jones, I copied the text from my own writing of the finding aid- making small changes/deletions. It must be this finding aid that you are talking about, right? Perhaps in the future I should rewrite it more? There is nothing else available online concerning him. Should I take this into consideration for the future? Perhaps I should edit the other entries to avoid this happening in the future. Also, since I point to the papers and my own bio sketch in the finding aid, this would likely suffice? Disputed fair use rationale for Image:AlfredKreymborg.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:AlfredKreymborg.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 19:14, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Jonah poetry book cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Jonah poetry book cover.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Zginder (talk) (Contrib) 22:51, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

There is one section called "Low resolution?" this picture is not low resolution and might be to large for fair use. Zginder (talk) (Contrib) 23:24, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Larkin

Since you are a previous editor of the page on Philip Larkin may I draw your attention to a request for advice that I have placed on the talk page? Thanks! Almost-instinct (talk) 22:09, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Image:GauguinNightCafeAtArles.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:GauguinNightCafeAtArles.JPG|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello again

I haven't been editing much in poetry areas recently: other, mainly historical topics have come up. I have been sorting out my books, though, and this is bringing some older articles to my attention. I'm glad to see you've been keeping up the good work. Charles Matthews (talk) 21:04, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Good to hear from you again. I always seem to be sorting out my books, due to the relationship between search time, number of books, and space available. Stumps (talk) 00:43, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
I think Peter Russell (poet) would be worth an article: he has an issue of Agenda dedicated to him, which cropped up (double-stacking!) - so notable. I can't quite place him. What do you think? Charles Matthews (talk) 11:47, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Absolutely worth an article - I'll make a start soon. Stumps (talk) 10:59, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
And how are we doing on J. Milton (b. 1608)? I keep on coming across aspects of Milton, since I work on the 17th century. Because of the anniversary there is plenty about him here in Cambridge, including Geoffrey Hill talking. Christopher Ricks on Wednesday. These lectures get to be podcasts on the Christ's College website. Anyway, I haven't looked around at the main articles, just worked around the edges. (I smiled inwardly when Hill read the sonnet where Colkitto was mentioned.) Charles Matthews (talk) 16:47, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Oh dear, the Milton article is a bit disappointing. It'll have to go on my Zeno-like to-do list. Stumps (talk) 10:59, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes, John Milton does need working over. I'll try referencing and copy-editing. There seem also to be structural issues. Charles Matthews (talk) 12:49, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm now working over the Milton article, but as usual there are other topics that need writing (his vicar in Bread Street, a book). I wanted to broach Jacobean/Caroline poets in general with you. We have terms like "metaphysical", "Sons of Ben", and Cavalier poet, religious poet for that period. Last time I looked, the whole idea that you had metaphysical and religious on one side, secular and follower of Jonson and cavalier on the other, seemed to be fairly worthless as an explanation. So what do we have as survey in this area? We obviously need to get current scholarly opinion on the labels into focus. Charles Matthews (talk) 11:56, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
I haven't had a chance to get to Milton yet - been diverted into making a start on Peter Russell (poet) - re 17C ... I'll get a reading pile together; I recall that Alastair Fowler in his intro to the New Oxford Book talks about at least the need for the addition of a school around Michael Drayton to include William Drummond of Hawthornden and George Wither and a few others. I'll look into this. (BTW, I see Tribe of Ben redirects to Cavalier poet and not Sons of Ben (literary group) which is a separate entry, what a mess.) Stumps (talk) 20:47, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Fixed the "Tribe", at least. See also Milton comments elsewhere.[3] Charles Matthews (talk) 11:55, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

I was working on Andrew Marvell just now. For Milton, the big missing element seems now to be the first century or so of critical reception. That wouldn't be so hard to add, I think. There is obviously a huge amount on the various editions, and (particularly) the illustrators. That sounds like a separate article, really. Also the Blake influence is pretty interesting to pin down. Charles Matthews (talk) 12:40, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
George Wither: yes, just about everything to do there, certainly. Charles Matthews (talk) 10:44, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Agreed ... it's now on my list. And I'm thinking we might need a separate article on the Spenserians ... who was it who said they might as well be called the (Du) Bartasians?? Stumps (talk) 11:22, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:LawrenceDurrellTravelReaderCover.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:LawrenceDurrellTravelReaderCover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:38, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Geoffrey Eggleston

A tag has been placed on Geoffrey Eggleston requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Contemporary Verse 2 speedy delete=

A tag has been placed on Contemporary Verse 2, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

empty

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Your article 'Contemporary Verse 2' has very little or no information on the article. Speedy deletion of Template:Yearbox2

This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes ({{transclusionless}}).

The article King's Lynn Award for Merit in Poetry has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for references failed to find significant coverage in reliable sources to comply with notability requirements. This included web searches for news coverage, books, and journals, which can be seen from the following links:
King's Lynn Award for Merit in Poetrynews, books, scholar
Consequently, this article is about a subject that appears to lack sufficient notability.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Abductive (reasoning) 09:20, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Stumps! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 6 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 4 article backlog. You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:37, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Scansion

I'm engaged in a total overhaul of Systems of scansion, which I believe you originated. My work is at User:Phil wink/sandbox2. I'm contacting you for 2 reasons: First, I look forward to any input you may have, if you're still interested in the topic. Second, I'm not quite sure how I should proceed in going live, and you appear to be knowledgeable in wiki process. My intent is that when the article is in decent shape, it should reside on the page Scansion which currently redirects to Systems of scansion. I think this is justified because "Scansion" is the simplest and most common entry that would be searched, and the new article is expanded sufficiently to merit the broader term. Then Systems of scansion should be blanked and become merely a redirect to Scansion. I think this is justified because, although I have retained almost nothing verbatim from the existing article, I have kept and even expanded all the systems to which it refers, rendering the current page redundant. I believe I can perform these particular actions myself, but I don't want to transgress procedure or wikiquette. Is there any particular process I should go through? Can you help me with it? Thanks. Phil wink (talk) 21:13, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your super-speedy response. I've responded to your discussion on my page, and copied the above paragraph, too, so that the discussion will be whole. Hope that's OK with you. If not, please advise. Phil wink (talk) 04:47, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Robert Sherard

Hello, not sure if this is the correct way to contact you, I've never tried posting on Wikipedia before. I recently ran a search of Robert Sherard and found a Wikipedia page of him. I noted the page was relatively brief and you had posted a request for more information back in 2005. We currently hold a manuscript he wrote titled "History of a Hoodoo", it is in effect sis biography. I have not read it for some time and once contacted a UK university whom I noted had a large collection of his works. No one there ever resonded.

I would be keen to assist in expanding his page but am not sure where to start and am keen to gain your assistance. If you could contact me it would be appreciated. Gooms, 22 August 2010 NZST —Preceding undated comment added 09:54, 22 August 2010 (UTC).

Thanks for your comments, I'll re-read the manuscript before making any changes and perhaps send you a copy before uploading.

Fair use rationale for File:EmpsonSelectedLettersCover.JPG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:EmpsonSelectedLettersCover.JPG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

A tag has been placed on Margaret Caroline Rudd requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, individual animal(s), an organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject of the article is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} at the top of the article, immediately below the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate), and providing your reasons for contesting on the article's talk page, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. You may freely add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

You may want to read the guidelines for specific types of articles: biographies, websites, bands, or companies. Cheers! ► Wireless Keyboard ◄ 03:02, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

License tagging for File:Yellow Room Diagram page 132.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:Yellow Room Diagram page 132.jpeg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. The article Alan Rook has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

non-notable person

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Georges Chelon. The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:10, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

The article Georges Chelon has been proposed for deletion because, under Wikipedia policy, all newly created biographies of living persons must have at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Scansion redux

Hi, Stumps. I happened upon this note about diverging scansion styles, and have put in my 2 cents. I thought you'd like to know, in case you weren't watching the page. Happy Shakespeare's Birthday Observed! Phil wink (talk) 23:48, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

I've begun notes here [see now this -pw] for an updated scansion style sheet. I'll let you decide where it should go in the short term. I'm certainly not going to start altering the standards of a wikigroup (of which I'm not even a member!) without some consensus -- though I fear at this point consensus might merely be what you and I happen to agree on. So I see 3 possibilities:
  1. It stays in my sandbox until ready, meanwhile we alert the talk page to go there and comment/edit. Possible risk: it will seem too private (though that is not the intent) and people could be discouraged from contributing.
  2. I paste it into the talk page, which allows for discussion and edits there. Possible risk: No one wants to edit it there either, because it's viewed as my comment which normally should not be edited by others.
  3. You or I start altering the actual section in the wikigroup page proper (but I've already said why this is unappealing to me at this early stage).
Then of course, if either course #1 or #2 is taken, if anyone should make contributions to the notes their authorship will be obscured by pasting it in to the main page. As collaborative as Wikipedia is, preliminary collaboration seems quite difficult to me. If you know of a better way, let's do that. Meanwhile I'm just going to putter around in my sandbox. Phil wink (talk) 03:08, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
PS: In the mean time, I've floated this idea to User:JoannaSerah, which is probably better than the above: "I wonder if a better solution wouldn't be to spin the whole section off onto its own subpage, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Poetry/Scansion Style. Then it would be publicly available for comment and editing, comments would be tied specifically to it (not to the project as a whole), and we could still link to it from the project page only after it was sufficiently vetted."
Cheers. Phil wink (talk) 15:02, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
The project subpage sounds like a good idea Stumps (talk) 08:06, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

I liked your description of iambic pentameter, specifically with the way poets may occasionally vary the stress and foot for creative effect. I have written a two sonnet poem (28 lines) and would like to ask if you would be so kind to analyze the meter as I have written it. I can mark the scansion in advance, or you can as you perceive it. The poem is about one of my favorite creatures: the cat.

I hope you receive this message and e-mail me back at the below address.

Thank you!

A tag has been placed on Šarišan requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. ♠PMC(talk) 05:49, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
