Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
[edit]Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. [edit]Hi SounderBruce - I hope your doing well. If you get a moment, would it be okay if you could contribute an article or two (or few) towards Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/The 1000 Destubbing Challenge? We're so close to reaching the goal - I've been doing a lot of it by myself but it's really long overdue that I ask for help xD - no worries if you can't! DYK for MLS Cup 2024
[edit]On 4 January 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article MLS Cup 2024, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the final seconds of MLS Cup 2024 were disrupted by players and staff who mistakenly entered the field to celebrate? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/MLS Cup 2024. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, MLS Cup 2024), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

American soccer team names
[edit]I'm confused why you're arguing that it is necessary to include "SC", "FC", etc. in the club names for American teams specifically. Please direct me to the rule that says that is necessary and explain why Lodeiro has to be only Orlando City player with this specified and why the most famous MLS player, Lionel Messi, also does not follow this rule. Raskuly (talk) 02:15, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Raskuly: It has been discussed several times at WT:FOOTY and general consensus has been to treat American club names differently because of the way ENGVAR works. SounderBruce 02:22, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- This seems to be more of a Seattle Sounders and St. Louis City specific issue as looking through American/Canadian teams with names that use other words than just "SC", "FC", etc. to name the team Seattle Sounders and St. Louis City players are consistently the only players with this being specified. The teams I'm referring to are Atlanta United, Chicago Fire, Inter Miami, Orlando City, Houston Dynamo, Minnesota United, and Vancouver Whitecaps. If it standard to refer to Sounders and St. Louis players by the full club name, then that wouldn't require Lodeiro to be referred to as an Orlando City SC player. Could you link the latest consensus about this? Raskuly (talk) 02:42, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- The other teams simply have not had careful maintenance of their articles if they are missing the appropriate suffixes. The issue is that this introduces inconsistency when referring to MLS clubs, as several teams simply use their city name (e.g. FC Dallas or Charlotte FC). If we are to refer to those clubs by their full name, then logically the other club names would need to use their full common name; in reliable secondary sources, the use of "FC" after "Seattle Sounders" is fairly consistent. As for the latest consensus, I don't have the time to dig through the archives, but the search bar generally works; it's been years since this was last discussed, and it is mostly settled. SounderBruce 02:52, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- I wouldn't say that these omissions are a direct indication of a lack of maintenance. It seems that the default of most editors is to omit "FC", "SC", etc. from the names under most circumstances which seems to indicate that the consensus was incorrect if readers and editors are generally comfortable with having that excluded for those clubs. If anything, this just indicates that editors most focused on Sounders and St. Louis have a preference towards writing the full name while editors who generally edit articles related to those other clubs have a preference towards excluding it. The reason why I brought up Messi was because he likely has the most well-maintained article out of any MLS player (at least the most attention put towards it) yet except on one occasion (the first in the body), Inter Miami CF is simply referred to as Inter Miami. I understand that this isn't something to fix on your talk page, but my discussion with you has highlighted an apparent issue with American/Canadian soccer team naming in articles. Raskuly (talk) 03:08, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- I would not use a battleground article like Messi's (which changes frequently and has factional disputes all the time) as an indicator of quality; instead, there are several FA, GA, and FL entries that have used the suffixed club names without issue. Those have been actually scrutinized for their compliance with MOS and other policies, and hence why I would rather not see poor practices being spread further than they already have. Agriculture in Washington(s)
[edit]I've moved Agriculture in Washington to Agriculture in Washington (state) as requested, and agree with your reasoning for the move, but such a move only makes sense if there's a DAB for the base title, and when I went to make that, I've run into the problem that we seem to have essentially no coverage of agriculture in Washington, D.C. That's not for a lack of topics: Historically, D.C. had plenty of farms, and it still has precisely one, which I know because I used to work next to it. But, the closest thing I can find that we currently have an article on is Category:Plantation houses in Washington, D.C., which isn't really about farming. And a DAB can't just be between a bluelink and a redlink so... any ideas? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 09:30, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Tamzin: It seems that modern-day D.C. has a few community gardens managed by the District of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation, so perhaps a new Agriculture in Washington, D.C. article could incorporate these along with the historic farms. SounderBruce 20:35, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- It would be a fun article to write, and I could see doing so someday, but don't think I have time now. So if you're not planning to yourself, and there's nowhere suitable to redirect the term, and nothing else that could go on a DAB, I think the (state) article needs to be moved back, as a lesser-of-two-evils thing? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 22:18, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Tamzin: I think we should favor consistency in naming and just leave a redirect behind from Agriculture in Washington that can be converted into a dab when a D.C. article is written. SounderBruce 22:28, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not sure that's consistent with WP:CONCISE and WP:DAB, but I guess anyone can revert the move if they want, so I'll leave it be, and we'll see if anyone challenges it before I (or someone else) eventually get around to writing something somewhere on agriculture in D.C. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 22:36, 15 January 2025 (UTC)

George Benson page finally completed
[edit]Hey SounderBruce,
Just wanted to let you know that I finally got around to completing the George Benson (civic organizer) page. He seems to be a transit nerd such as yourself.

- @Bpuddin: Good work! I should probably get around to rewriting the Waterfront Streetcar article for the upcoming anniversary of its demise. SounderBruce 04:39, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
