Student trying to edit semi-protected page
Hi Shalor -
I removed an empty edit request from Talk:Ed and Lorraine Warren for a student you had welcomed. Looks like the article was semi-protected for vandalism since they last edited the article, I'm guessing they were trying to edit and wound up placing an empty request (something I see all the time). I left them my standard note, but I spotted the Ed flags and figured I'd drop you a line in case there's something else to be done. Thanks! ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 19:48, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Breastfeeding article
Davie243 has returned deleted copy to the Breastfeeding article. I really find this to be unacceptable. Can we have a meeting with the instructor? - Thanks Shalor. Looking at your talk pages it is my impression that you do a lot of good work here. I have left a few messages on Ian's talk page as well. I am unsure of his position regarding Wikipedia's student credit edits. He states that 8,000 students per...would I call it a "credit year"?, take part in a WP instruction course. Apparently he is not connected to WP as far as his comments to students goes but is connected to another organization, is that correct? Also, it appears that he in contact with the student's instructors, are you as well? Gandydancer (talk) 17:59, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Gandydancer - thanks for the compliment! I try really hard to make sure to catch as much as I can with the students and to try to explain policy as clearly as possible to them. I would be lying if I were to say that I hadn't done some of the same things they did at one point in time. Some of my earlier edits under my main account are pretty cringeworthy, to say the least. It's nice to hear that I'm doing good work since it definitely has motivated me to keep plugging away. With the question about Ian, he works with us - he's my colleague and supervisor. He tends to take on the more science oriented classes as well as perform some of the needed management stuff to keep us going. With the student, we've gotten in contact with the student's instructor, so hopefully they won't continue on trying to re-add the content like they have been. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:59, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)@Gandydancer: - Actually we support about 8000 students in the Spring, and about as many in the Fall. We both work for Wiki Education, which originated as part of the Education Program at WMF, but was spun off into a separate non-profit in 2014. We work specifically with higher ed in the US and Canada. We are all Wikipedians - I'm been an editor since 2004, an admin since 2005. Shalor has been here since 2006, and an admin since 2013.
- We are in touch with the instructors we support - in exchange for our resources (our Dashboard to assign work and track their students, our training modules, and the support of Shalor, my colleague Elysia (Wiki Ed). In the case of this class, I was able to contact the instructor, who spoke to the student and (hopefully) got them to stop editing that article. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:10, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Sourcing and POV concerns with Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/UCSD/IPE Money and Finance IMF WB (Fall 2019)
I've come across a few of the articles created by this course in the new pages feed, and I'm rather concerned with the output. While contributions from WikiEd courses often leave something to be desired, in this case the vast majority of the articles created by students appear to only include sources from the World Bank and IMF, despite those organizations not being independent of the World Bank. This is a disservice to both Wikipedia and the students, because it leaves Wikipedia with a bunch of one-sided articles and leaves the students with the impression that the World Bank is an uncontroversial and indisputable authority on its own operations. It is doubly concerning that this course appears to have been taught more than once. Is there any way to make sure that students in this course are properly instructed in Wikipedia's policies on neutrality and source reliability? signed, Rosguill talk 01:31, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

Bad edits from students
I have just spent a significant amount of time trying to clean up Food history, which was edited by several students participating in History 101D Topics in the World History of Science.
I and other editors have had to delete just about everything that the student editors added: User:KarlyKerod, User:KobeBuckets24, User:Ab3l100, User:XBradley, User:Jgaliste, User:Cvillabe, User:CamsTwitter, User:Gracesyl.
The quality of their edits ranges from bad to awful. Much of it is essentially paraphrasing a source, notably Laudan's (great!) Cuisine and Empire. But even when they're paraphrasing, they paraphrase badly. They miss the temporal, spatial, and conceptual context that makes the material meaningful, and sometimes write the exact opposite of what the source says. For example, Laudan says "The earliest Buddhists cuisine emphasized steamed or boiled rice, sugar, and ghee and shunned meat and alcohol. It began ... in 260 B.C.E." (p. 103) and later "... from early, ... Buddhist cuisine downplayed meat and alcohol.... By the fifth century C.E., Indians... largely rejected the killing of cattle..." (p. 109). This becomes "Starting in the 5th century CE, the earliest Buddhist meals were made up predominately [sic] of rice, sugar, ghee, meat and alcohol." Not only does the WP wording directly contradict the source, but it somehow thinks that the 5th century CE is "early", when the source dates early Buddhist cuisine to the 3rd century BCE. Or "Christian cuisine, which was established around the first to third century, and was indebted to Islamic cuisine, spread over vast areas of the old Roman Empire." -- another chronology problem here. The passage starting "Cuisine was thought to have symbolic meaning as well." is a bad paraphrase of Laudan's discussion of Sufi imagery (p. 153), not about Islamic thought in general.
There are also huge generalizations and platitudes and nonsense like "The Middle Ages, also referred to as the Dark Ages, began in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire and lasted for almost a thousand years, leading up to the Renaissance." and "The idea of feasting and fasting rose with Christian cuisine in the late fifteenth century."
Besides good sources used badly (Laudan), there are plenty of bad sources, too. Not just pap like Food through the ages : from stuffed dormice to pineapple, but also random enthusiast web sites like [1]. Oh, and almost none of the book references has page numbers, which makes it very hard to check the sources.
Information irrelevant to food history gets thrown in: "Parts of the rice plant are used to feed livestock, construction, clothing items, and cleaning tools".
And then there are the completely garbled, incomplete, nonsensical, and ungrammatical sentences like "Until the modernization and urbanization food in the nineteenth century." and "Both Portugal and Spain were expanding beyond just that of the New World in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century."
It's not just this particular class that has contributed low-quality text to WP. For example, we have User:Pattywinter writing:
- As of the 1970s, the RICO Act planned the raging racketeering allowing an individual directing these movements to independently being charged for the crimes of the group.
for OLES 2129 Writing for the Digital World at the University of Sydney. Huh?
I love the idea of teaching students to edit Wikipedia. It should benefit both Wikipedia and the students. But the way it's being done in a lot of classes, with students dumping poorly understood material into Wikipedia as incorrect paraphrases, and no feedback or supervision of their efforts, it benefits neither Wikipedia nor the students. I know it is possible to do much better. --Macrakis (talk) 23:57, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for letting me know about this Macrakis! I will definitely scrutinze these edits. With the edits as a whole, I do try to catch bad work as quickly as possible - and ideally before it can go live - but sometimes things will slip through the cracks. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:26, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
- Shalor, it's unrealistic to expect one editor -- you -- to monitor the output of hundreds of students. It should be the instructors of these courses that impose some sort of quality control, which obviously they're not doing. I wonder how they evaluate the student work. Are they just looking at the character count of the edits? How can we encourage instructors to review contributions more carefully? ... and keep track of those instructors who don't take their role seriously? --Macrakis (talk) 20:17, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Macrakis: We provide our instructors with a great deal of training on how to run a Wikipedia assignment, including advice on evaluating quality. We always discourage instructors from evaluating content based on character or word count, and encourage them to evaluate based on quality of the students' edits. The vast majority of instructors we work with do their very best to ensure the quality of the work their students upload to Wikipedia. We'll follow up with the UC Santa Cruz instructor to see what happened. In terms of the University of Sydney course, that's not one Wiki Education supports (we only support courses in the U.S. and Canada), so I can't speak for the work of that class. Maybe @Fransplace: can, so pinging her. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:01, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- Macrakis, thanks for your note here as it helps me to know that I'm not the only one that finds it so hard to understand how a college student can do so poorly and how it is that their instructors seem to do so poorly as well. In all the time I've been here only two students have done really good work on the articles that I watch. Several others have done (barely) passing work and the rest have done just awful. I wish that those editors like you and myself that have been here for a long time with a good record and many edits could speak directly with the instructors. Gandydancer (talk) 16:35, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Gandydancer: Thanks for your reply. My partner is a college professor, and tells me that some of her first-year students write similarly badly. She and her colleagues spend considerable effort on giving them feedback to improve their writing, so that by the time they've graduated, they're doing much better. And some of her colleagues assign Wikipedia editing. Here, for example, is one of their students' edits -- very good, I'd say! (cf. [2])
- Sadly, it is obvious that no one is bothering to read and correct a lot of these other student edits at all. Many are stitched together from source texts, paraphrasing just enough so that it isn't blatant plagiarism, but clearly not understanding the original source, and certainly not organizing their contributions into cogent presentations. Some aren't even intelligible English. Maybe the supervising instructors are content that the students have mastered the mechanics of adding text to Wikipedia, regardless of the value of the content. That's a terrible goal!
- (Pinging @Rjensen: because of his helpful edits on Food history and his experience as a professor and writer.)
- How can we improve this situation? --Macrakis (talk) 19:21, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

- Thanks, I wasn't sure what the right place was.... --Macrakis (talk) 22:24, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Lisa B. Kahn
Hello Shalor, I'm reviewing Lisa B. Kahn as a new page patroller. The article contains many summaries of Kahn's journal articles. This is not typical for an article on an academic unless the single article had a significant impact. I'm going to trim these as an editor is likely to remove them in the future or template for primary sources. If you or the student think I've removed too much please feel free to revert the edit! Educator Out Here Crashing the Wiki Web
Shalor! Greetings from the tundra of the great North of the US. I attended a conference and came up with a lesson and assignment plan for undergraduates in my Writing for Media course to address marginalized athletes. I called the assignment "Addressing the Marginalized Athlete—Writing Wikipedia Across Running Cultures" and assigned students an athlete to research. They built annotated bibliographies (learning verification and how to find news sources). Then they had to summarize and synthesize their bibliographies into articles, written in Word documents.
Today was the final step of the assignment! In the computer classroom, the students learned basic Wiki-markup and were assigned to post their articles. They worked until the end of class, and then I showed them how to post. We all posted together and ... then we were all blocked and it looked as though all our accounts would be deleted by Bbb23 and his sockpuppetry searching machines. He suggested talking with you about how to avoid this from happening in the future. I'm happy to receive any advice you'd have for me (especially mid-semester! I can do a lot more in the summer, but right now I'm limited with time.)
Thanks, Shalor!

Question Regarding Editing an Article
Hi Shalor, I'm a student editor and I'll be working on the article 'Wiegenlied (Brahms)'. The training material says to make small edits in my sandbox and then move them, but the WikiEDU page makes it sound more like I need to bring over all the edits at once to my sandbox and then ask for your review at the end. Hello.
I need help with saving my bibliography! I am so clueless on how to add and save info to my sandbox. I tried following instructions to create user pages but when I followed the video it didn't allow me to add it. As of now, I am keeping all research on a Word document because I can't figure out how to save it. I have copy and pasted my bibliography into several tabs through wiki and I've had no luck. Thanks! Sorry if this is a dumb question I'm so lost.
- Not a dumb question at all! Can you email me at shalorwikiedu.org with a screenshot of what you are seeing? Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:54, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
Response to requests for assessment
Hello Shalor, I am contacting you based on dialogue from the talk page of User:Jmjosh90, who had expressed some concern about a lack of response regarding assessments. I am concerned about the backlog in unassessed articles and articles due for reassessment. These processes may not mean much to veteran editors, but they are critical feedback mechanisms for less experienced editors. While I believe it would be ill-advised to promise that assessments will always happen quickly, I am frustrated with some of the WikiProjects in the lack of communications. Too often talk page inquiries go answered, and it seems to me that this will cause us to lose newer editors, whom we will all depend on to help us to sustain Wikipedia. I am not familiar with the Wikipedia Education outreach, but I have noticed improvements at Wikipedia at large in assisting novice editors, such as Articles for Creation and Teahouse. I am hoping to do what I can to make a few of the WikiProjects more welcoming. If you encounter other editors who are interested in content under the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject Mexico, Wikipedia: WikiProject Texas, or Wikipedia:WikiProject Houston, please encourage them to ask for help at the talk page of those projects as I am currently monitoring all of those pages. There is a similar effort to reactivate Wikipedia:WikiProject History. Sincerely, Oldsanfelipe2 (talk) 20:19, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Shalor. Hope 2020 has been a good one for you and yours. I noticed something at Talk:Kobe Bryant#Should we elaborate more on the sexual assault case? that was apparently posted by Jhclark3456, one of the students participating in the above-mentioned Wiki-Ed course. I totally get that Bryant's death is one of the hot topics worldwide at the moment, but this might not be the best possible article for this student editor to assign to themselves.
This article has been heavily edited by all kinds of people over the past few days which makes it pretty unstable at the moment; moreover, it's also been semi-protected since 2007 which means there's probbaly been some serious disruption that's happening to it over the years. Right now, the talk page is receiving lots of WP:ERs, some good some bad, by people wanting to edit the article and this is only going to likely remain the state of things at least for the immediate future. There's even been talk of promoting the article for GA once things settle down a bit; furthermore, even though Bryant is dead, the article is still likely going to be subject to BLP per BDP with respect to content about him, particularly anything contentious, for some time to come, and BLP will still apply to content about other living persons. All of these things combined might not make this the ideal article for a student to try and be working on for a grade since their edits are probably going to be highly scrutinized and others might be a little less tolerant of certain things than they might normally be.
Anyway, you've got much more experience in dealing with these students than I and as the course's Wiki-Ed advisor maybe your take on this is different. For sure, it's also possible that this student will turn out to be an exceptional contributor to the article; however, after only a handful of edits, this might not the right fit for such an inexperienced editor. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:52, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for letting me know! It's a good question to ask, but not the topic I would recommend for a new user or new student user. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:46, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

St. Mary's College
In following a notice on an article being tagged for WikiEd use, I noticed the course page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/Saint_Mary%27s_College/Research_Methods_in_History_(Spring_2020) refers to St. Mary's College, no further description. Since there are at least fifty of these documented in Wikipedia, may I suggest some disambiguation is useful? With some minor detective work, I determined this one is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Mary%27s_College_(Indiana) . Regards, Tarl N. (discuss) 17:08, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello.
I need help with...
Beach cleaning is a solid litter removing the process from beaches and water banks. Humans beings consciously or unconsciously pollute the marine environment by discarded human-made materials such as plastic bottles and bags, fishing gears and nets, cigarette buds, tires, rubbers, paper, and textiles et cetera. Such solid materials drift from oceans onto lands and accumulate on beaches. These contaminants are called “marine debris” and harms ecology, health, and economy or coastal tourism (Krelling, 2017).
Beaches are recreational areas and attract many local or international visitors for tanning, swimming, walking or surfing. But a contaminated beach might impact the environment and economy through the globe, because the marine debris may be unattractive for many beach users due to aesthetic value or health concerns. Ballance, et al. 's (2000) study shows that a clean beach is a very important determiner for many local and international tourists in South Africa. According to the study, local and international tourists choose to visit the country because of beaches and proper climate conditions. If the tourists do not find a clean bleach, they travel to different regions of the country to find a clean beach (Ballance, et al, 2000). So, cleanliness is very important for the tourism industry of countries.
A clean beach can be an indicator of the environmental quality and development level of a country. Beach Cleaning Health Index is the cleaning classification standard of countries and their beaches such as European countries. The European beach classifications: A for excellent, B for good, C for regular, and D for bad (Araújo et al. 2008). Beach cleaning demands some management arrangements, cleaning methods, special tools, and some human sources. recreational beaches classification in a rank of four indicators.

Page mover granted
Hello, Shalor (Wiki Ed). Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.
Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect
is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Hello.
I need help with... finding reliable sources for citation and reference links. This is a for a school assignment. How do I find reliable sources?
--Aliree14 (talk) 01:55, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- This is an excellent question!
- A great place to start would be your school or local library. Don't be afraid about asking the librarians for help - they're trained to help you research and if they're anything like me, they will greatly enjoy the process of showing you what the library has to offer and what will come up during a search. If you can't go to the library in person, many libraries have chat and email where you can ask them to help find sources or any tips or tricks for your specific library. (Different libraries can often have different operating systems.) Be very careful about using Internet search providers like Google, as not everything that comes up will be usable as a source.
- A good way to tell if a source is reliable would be to look and see if they have visible information about their editorial and verification process. If this is missing then that's a strong sign that they're likely not reliable. Another way would be to look at their website. Is the site in good working order or are pages down or broken? If so, then that's not a very good sign towards their quality. The same goes for spelling and grammatical errors.
- A good sign that a site or publication would be reliable is if they're routinely used as a reliable source by other reliable sources (especially academic and scholarly sources), have won awards from reputable places for their work, or have been frequently mentioned in reliable sources for their quality.
- I hope that this answer helps and I'll give more specific advice on your talk page. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:56, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

Question
So this is a bit of a stretch but figured you might be better suited to help. There is a group of students on IT wikiversity, editing under their professor, however they're all minors (like younger than 10) and posting PII. I've had it oversighted but this seems to be a trend from this teacher and there isn't a super active local community. Is there anyone within Wikied that speaks Italian and might be willing to chime in? I don't want to discourage them entirely but I think 8 year olds posting PII is...dangerous. Also feel free to e-mail me if you feel it's better suited there given the sensitive topic. Thanks! Praxidicae (talk) 15:00, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

"edited down for tone, original research"
Hello there, I am reaching out because I had several chunks of my article erased. In my article, you erased famous artworks that I listed and explained, and you put a title saying "select article". Can you please explain why you did this and what this means? This is a school assignment so clarity and full details would be great for this. I would also love to know what "original research" means? If it means plagiarized, I know for a fact that I did not plagiarize or intend to do so. Again, as many details as possible would be appreciated given that some things are taken out and this is a school assignment so I need to have this done by a certain date and done right. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jjone051 (talk • contribs) 06:27, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
