ICCPR article
[edit]I apparently intruded on a series of edits-in-progress you were making to this article as explained here. Please do look at that explanation, as it voices the concerns which the intrusion grew out of. As I explained there, I'm just going to back out of the way at this point rather than possibly conflict my edits with yours. This note is to let you know that you may need to re-edit the bits which I touched during your series of edits. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 03:22, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Simon Margan [SMargan] - Thanks for your message. That was me! I am not sure how to correspond with you so I hope you get this message. I am researching the cases concerning the covenant, but was unable to find the particular rights in the list I was adding information about. It seemed to enumerate the rights up until a certain point and then stop. It also had a few sentence construction errors, but I assume it was because you were in the middle of editing that section. I was intending to provide further cases on the rights I had added. If this is a problem let me know. I am new to logging in and using Wikipedia so bare with me. Up until now my additions have been unanimous. Therefore, in summary, feel free to touch up any of the edits I make. I am hoping they will have some use, so that they do not just get deleted.
Welcome!

Same-sex marriage
[edit]Please do not make disruptive edits such as the one you made on Same-sex marriage. The article was protected specifically to prevent the addition of Australia before any legislation is enacted since the vote was not binding. Yes Malcolm Turnbull wants same-sex marriage to be legislated before christmas, but that is not confirmation so please do not present it as such in articles. [edit]Avoiding an edit war at List of Dora the Explorer home video releases
[edit]Hi SMargan,
thank you very much for maintaining the List of Dora the Explorer home video releases. I see there has been quite some frustration with an editor who refuses to discuss. I also notice that you have correctly used the list's talk page to discuss these changes, but have been ignored. When you are in such a situation, please still keep the edit warring policy in mind. I personally recommend the following essay: Wikipedia:Responding to a failure to discuss.
Thanks again and best regards,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:16, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi ToBeFree,
Your thanks are much appreciated, as were your actions to resolve this matter! You are correct when you say that I had some frustration in editing. I made what I thought were some innocuous formatting changes and Region 4 addition changes in the table on List of Dora the Explorer home video releases. It was frustrating when my changes were apparently continually being undone, and my approaches to 66.65.97.10 in order to discuss his views on the page, i.e. 1) to see if there could not be some compromise way forward or 2) another resolution (perhaps even educating me as to where I was in error), where being ignored. The whole "editor war" storm seemed to develop out of nowhere. I admit that, whilst I had no overt intention of getting into that situation, as someone in that friction with another editor, I may have been equally to blame. Even though I knew there is an elected Disputes Team, I did not know who to approach, or how to approach them. I will definitely keep the edit warring policy in mind and I will review the essay that you have suggested, i.e. Wikipedia:Responding to a failure to discuss.
Your response and actions were much appreciated. SMargan (talk) 22:20, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
- No worries, you're welcome – and thank you very much for the kind feedback. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:22, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Edit-warring
[edit]SMargan, re: your edits at List of Dora the Explorer home video releases, you have to be careful not to involve yourself in edit-warring, because you can wind up sanctioned as well. You did the right thing by opening a discussion on the talk page. I notified the IP that they should participate in discussion. If they don't, after a fashion, (I sometimes let these things go for 2 weeks or so) you can try restoring the content. If they remove it again, don't revert, rather take it to the edit-warring noticeboard. Nobody's going to die if the wrong information is in that article for a while. As part of our Bold, Revert, Discuss process, if an editor is stonewalling change by reverting and failing to discuss, that is a behavioural problem, and the editor can be sanctioned for that. Don't get dragged into the drama. Please keep cool. Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:20, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- To Cyphoidbomb,
- Thank you again for taking the time to deal with this matter. Apologies again on my part, as it undoubtedly takes two to start a "editor war".
- You are right, that I was not sure about the correct procedure. I did not know about the "Email Warring Alert Notice Board" (edit-warring noticeboard). However, now that I do know about it, I will use that if a future such incident arises straightaway. You are correct, that ordinarily 'appropriate time' should have be given for 66.65.97.10 to respond.
- I knew that trying to open a dialogue with 66.65.97.10 was the first step. I made several attempts to do this, but 66.65.97.10 seemed completely oblivious. I was not sure whether 66.65.97.10 was just unfamiliar with the technical process of Wiki communicating, or was just being deligerant. I felt that if I could somehow open a dialogue, then a editor conflict could have been averted before it escalated like it did. Indeed, whilst a large amount of 66.65.97.10's action have been regressive and harmful, some edits have been helpful to the page.
- As you know, a few days ago 66.65.97.10 was warned about continually undoing content. Back then, as now, I was glad that there was some unsolicited arbitrator intervention, as then I would not have know how to contact the arbiter. At that stage, I gave my position both here and to User talk:ToBeFree, whilst 66.65.97.10 did not take part in that process. A 24-hour ban on editing that page was imposed on 66.65.97.10.
- After the 24 hour ban was lifted, 66.65.97.10 seemed to continue unabated. I was not sure how to proceed. I undid 3 edits, which were literally undoing undo edits he had undone many times previous. I thought the comments I was putting with those undo changes might have been the overtures that were needed to encourage 66.65.97.10 to start a discussion. I was a bit reluctant on bringing it to an arbiter board straight away, as I am aware the arbiters must get millions of these type of conflict issues. Indeed, because of the time difference, when 66.65.97.10 did this, it was in the middle of the night here so my immediate responses were limited.
- The whole thing is so embarrassing, as the dispute just seems so petty. I was not sure that taking it to an arbiters straight away might not just seem a waste of arbiter time. Indeed, I am still a little bit unsure of what the fresh-hold would be for taking a editor conflict to this forum would be. However, in future, now that I know of the existence of the "Email Warring Alert Notice Board" (edit-warring noticeboard), I will err on the side of caution and take something like this there immediately.
- Once again thank you!
- SMargan (talk) 07:50, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
- In cases like these when we encounter editors who try to take ownership of articles and fail to communicate, they typically wind up blocked rather quickly. Regards, Cyphoidbomb 22:19, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
Hey there, re: this, just so you know, the minor edit tickbox is intended for small, cosmetic changes like typo fixes, grammar improvements, reversion of obvious vandalism, spelling improvements, and things of that nature, i.e. things that couldn't possibly be the subject of a dispute. It'd be appreciated if you'd please keep this in mind. Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 05:09, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
- To Cyphoidbomb,
- Now that I know that, I will keep that in mind!
- I was classifying minor changes as anything that did not majorly structurally change the direction of the page. In hindsight, I have been ticking that "Minor Edit" box a little too frequently. That has meant I have been erroneously including "the addition of references to already existing text", and other similar edits that might be considered major edits, as "minor edits". I will tick the "minor edit" box sparingly in future.
- Thanks for the advice yet again.
- SMargan (talk) 07:30, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. Also, generally speaking, I don't normally see line divisions like yours between talk page comments. I suppose you're free to do what you want on your own talk page, but you might avoid doing that on other discussion pages. We typically just indent as I've done below. Not admonishing you, just trying to educate you on some of our community norms. I'll go away now. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:54, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
- To Cyphoidbomb,
- Thanks for the advise! Keep those pointers coming! I am going through my comments now and removing any "line divisions" that I find.

- To DPL bot,
- Thanks for posting this automated "Disambiguation link" notification, thus bringing to my attention an accidental minor error that I created in my prior edit. I have remedied the The Octonauts Wiki Page that you referred to, by fixing the existing inaccurate "Sea Pig" Wiki Link reference, away from the disambiguation pointer to "Sea Pig", which did not exist as a page, to the more accurate page title of "Scotoplanes", via the Wiki Link Sea pig.

I had no idea that there were such vandals who openly worked to do such destructive edits, even to the point of tagging their own vandalism with credit messages. I had assumed everyone was accessing this Wikipedia medium with altruistic intentions. SMargan (talk) 12:24, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed. I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:

ILGA
[edit]Hello. I added ILGA to the pedophile advocacy category because they at one time contained the North American Man/Boy Love Association, which is a pro-pedophile organization. I was trying to be objective and not engage in "homophobic vandalism" but I can easily see why some people would be offended by my highlighting the connection between the two organizations. So many wonderful contributions to the List of LGBT awareness periods page!
[edit]I have that page on a watchlist and I saw all the additions you made there and I'm grateful you did that. I don't think we would cross editing paths, even though I edit a good deal of LGBTQ pages (mostly relating to characters and history of characters in animation) based on the stuff you have on your user page, but its good to have passionate people like you on here. Hope you have a good day! --Historyday01 (talk) 19:06, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- To Historyday01, I am glad you like my contributions! Thanks also for reaching out! I am sure there is a large Wikipedia editor's community, but I rarely get feedback from other editors. It is great to hear from other people like yourself, who edit similar pages.
- My Wikipedia work has been often focussed on children's animation, as I often look after my sister's kids and watch those show with them. As I visited those pages, a made updates and improvements as I went. I find that these type of children's animation pages are often poorly researched, not generally updated that regularly, and often prone to vandalism, so they keep me busy.
- Recently, I had to do some research into "List of LGBT awareness periods", as part of my work with ILGA Oceania (UN NGO for LGBTI people). I am glad someone put a list like the "List of LGBT awareness periods" together. However, I noticed a few improvements that could be made. Therefore, as with my visits to the Children's animation pages, I made updates and improvements, as I went. That is why you probably have not seen me around, as this is not my traditional area of editing. However, I am sure we will see each other around in the future. SMargan (talk) 00:28, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- Sure, its my pleasure. Yeah I don't get feedback on my editing much either. Its true that pages like that are often poorly researched, which is really unfortunate, so that's great you are working on that. I keep expanding my area of interest (somehow I started editing pages about mature animations and then space pirates, ha), but it definitely covers children's animation, at least in some capacity. I'm sure we will see each other around in the future too! In terms of LGBTQ children's animations, I am excited for the final season of Carmen Sandiego as there is a high possibility we may end up with a lesbian romance at the end (if not, the show still has been pretty good), the next season of The Owl House, Port of the Sea (made by the same person who created Nomad of Nowhere) and a bunch of others (S.A.L.E.M.: The Secret Archive of Legends, Enchantments, and Monsters), well and the upcoming Lumberjanes series too. 2020 has been a boon for series like that, with Hilda (British-Canadian series), Recorded by Arizal, Victor and Valentino, Cleopatra in Space the upcoming Villainous. Some other series I love are Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure (I just finished in 2020), Mysticons, and Sherwood (its a British-Canadian series which premiered in 2019 and no one remembers it). Of those, The Owl House, Nomad of Nowhere, the SALEM series, Lumberjanes, Victor and Valentino (as secondary characters), Cleopatra in Space (as one-off characters), Mysticons (lesbian couple), and Nomad of Nowhere all have canon LGBTQ characters, while Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure has hints of lesbian attraction. I just thought I'd share that, so you are aware of this wonderful shows too. Thanks again, so much, for your work on here. Historyday01 (talk) 01:21, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Red links
[edit]In this edit, you described two red links you removed as "broken" and redirected them to other targets. I have no opinion in this case of the appropriateness of the targets you chose, but you should be aware that there is nothing wrong with red links, and that they serve a valuable purpose: see the guideline WP:Red link. --JBL (talk) 17:41, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
- To JBL (talk) - Apologies for the confusion! I should have phrased that with greater clarity. What I meant is that I believed that the link that was in red actually correlated to an actual page, and that I was realigning the link so that it no longer appeared red, and linked the word highlighted to a relevant Wikipedia page. The only reason that I would generally remove a red link, without trying to fix it, is if I thought there was not likely to be a Wikipedia ever created for such a specific keyword or thing.
- I hope that clarifies things! Thanks for leaving a comment on my page. I appreciate your commitment to Wikipedia editing, and in particular your efforts to liaise with other Wikipedia editors. SMargan (talk) 14:08, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

- @31.55.242.67 (talk) - Thank you for bringing those error messages in the "Ticket to Ride" Wikipedia article to my attention. It is good to see that editors like you exist, i.e. those keeping an eye on these type of problems when they arise. I have just corrected those problems in my latest edit today (24 March 2024)[2].
- The errors seemed to be related to archive URL date mismatches. I thought I checked the archive dates when I first made my initial edits. It seems I will have to be more attentive in future. Do not hesitate to send me future warning messages, if you see me introducing errors like this in future.SMargan (talk) 06:58, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
