RE: Wikipedia's Expert Peer Review process (or lack of such) for Science related articles

User: Shotwell suggested (on my talk page) "I would endorse a WP:EXPERTADVICE page that outlined the wikipedia policies and goals for researchers in a way that enticed them to edit here in an appropriate fashion. Perhaps a well-maintained list of expert editors with institutional affiliation would facilitate this sort of highly informal review process. I don't think anyone would object to a well-maintained list of highly-qualified researchers with institutional affiliation (but then again, everyone seems to object to something)."

We could start with that if you would agree ... - could you help to push his idea through Wikipedia bureaucracy ? In my view people nominated as "expert reviewers" should be willing not to hide under the veil of anonymity. They should be able to demonstrate some level of the verifiable accomplishment / recognition in the domain of professional science (everything mentioned above relates to amateur Wikipedia activity ... ).

BTW, I do not see any reason why the anonymity of editors on Wikipedia is considered to be a "good thing". Above is my general opinion, so please don't take my statement personally. There is obviously a choice given for everyone in Wikipedia either to act "in open" or to hide behind meaningless assumed pseudonym and I accept this situation. Also I do understand current Wikipedia concept that in order to produce good Wikipedia science article, one does not need to be a professional scientist ... - that is fine with me ... But I propose to have (at least optionally) ability to review/qualify such article by the professional scientist. Cheers, Apovolot (talk) 13:31, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Myra, Wisconsin map insert

Thanks for placing the map. Can you send me instructions on how to do this in the future. You can send them to wolfj@slinger.k12.wi.us. Now the pictures are scanned from a book (see reference on Myra page). The book was printed in 1976 but I believe the Washington County Historical society has the rights to them. What process should I use to gain permission. Please keep the pictures on until I can seek permission. Thanks! Tidying convert template parameters

Hi Ruhrfisch,

I noticed that you are making a series of edits with an edit summary similar to "simplify convert templates (use default units, sig figs)" to articles mainly about State Parks. I would like to thank you for making these edits for several reasons. Firstly they do simplify the template call in articles making reading, understanding and editing articles easier. Secondly, simplifying the calls by removing redundant parameters makes the convert template look easier to use and hopefully promotes its use by editors. Thirdly (and dearest to my heart), using the default conversion output units for acres (which is hectares) restores hectares to many articles where I believe they are frequently the appropriate metric unit for land area conversions. This being particularly relevant considering that the single-handed campaign to remove hectares from wikipedia has restarted.

Note that the convert template does some obscure things when it tries to determine the number of significant digits in the input value. Some of the articles that you have edited recently to simplify the convert template calls have led to inconsistencies between converted values in the article text and the same value in an infobox, because of the guess that the convert template makes. An example lies in the Delaware Canal State Park article. I had started to edit these articles where such inconsistencies have crept in. I am making the assumption the area of the parks have been surveyed to an accuracy of at least to the nearest acre, such that in the article above there are 3 significant digits in 830 acres, not 2 as the convert template is guessing. However, I have come across another article (Erie Bluffs State Park) where this occurs and I thought before I find and edit too many more articles that you have contributed to significantly, I should seek your input. Is the nearest acre a reasonable assumption for the accuracy of the land area measurements given in these articles?

I like to see metric conversions provided that are easy to read and understand while having appropriate precision (not too much - not too little). I have started on the rest of the articles - I have R. B. Winter on my screen right now! I would be happy to continue, though I can't promise any deadlines for completion. If you would like to do it, just say so. I probably won't get much more done today. BTW, I put a surprise in Pymatuning State Park article that you will probably object to. I was waiting to see how long before someone found it! It should be m³, I know.

I listed two articles that I feel are of quality, but I am not sure how long they need to remain listed for peer review. So far, no one has made any suggestions or comments. Hey Ruhrfisch, per the peer review, I have been updating the first table on the List of Pi Kappa Phi chapters article here. I am adding the cities and closing dates for each chapter. I am also implementing a color-code for the chapter status (instead of using asterisks). I got the color idea from the List of Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom page. Re Mozart map (Mozart family Grand Tour)

Well, I tried my stuff on Online Map Creation. I can get an outline map all right, but when I tried to add cities, following what seemed to be the required process - nothing happened, so the procedure stalled. The map I need has exactly the dimensions of Awadewit's map on her History of a Six Weeks' Tour article. Her map also shows many of the towns I need. I would have thought her map could be easily adapted for my purposes, if I knew how. Can you help? I can specify my requirements in any way you wish. I am totally grateful. If it can be done, I'd like the map to be as per Awadewit's dimensions but with the following specific characteristics:-

• Remove all the rivers
• Replace these with country borders, if possible
• Insert the following towns, representing the outward journey to London, connected by a black line (with a couple of direction arrows) representing the outward journey to London: Salzburg; Munich; Mannheim; Mainz; Frankfürt; Cologne; Liège; Brussels; Paris; Calais; Dover; London
• Insert the following towns, (connected by a red line with arrows) to denote the return journey: (London); (Dover); (Calais); Lille; Ghent; Antwerp; The Hague; Amsterdam; Haarlem; Utrecht; (Brussels); (Paris); Dijon; Lyon; Geneva; Zurich; (Munich); (Salzburg).

That's 23 towns in all - somewhat less than Awadewit's. Can this be done? If necessary I can supply geographical coordinates for all the towns - or any other information needed. The map is marvellous, no further tweaks needed. I have loaded into the article page. The only possible problem is that it looks a bit small, and will not load if I try to force it to, say, 250px. Thanks, I don't noramlly reply here, but as for Julian's suggestion is a bit tilted (fixable) and the gravel sidewalk is close to being blow (I think). I could always nominate it though - it keeps me humble. I tend to get attached to certain photos for sentimental reasons, but unlike articles they can't be improved, and I am not in the position to buy a better camera. I may be missing something, but it seems to me that all four of those images are not under a free license. I love the first three, but am a bit puzzled by the fourth as a potential FP (looks more like part of someone's vacation slideshow - here we are at Leonard Harrison!). Boonies

There are a couple of issues with same places in the boonies of Pennsylvania. Kane get vandalized fairly often and I seem to be the only one watching it. Also, the maps of Potter County are all now out of whack. With the East Fork and Wharton deal. I will fix them, in time, but when I don't know. If you have time, could you do it? Stella Power Station

Right, I've gotten some of the references you've asked for and tried to expand or merge the short paragraphs. However I still haven't got references for the statements in the social and culture section. This is because there are no online resources stating whats in the article; its been taken from seeing the films and seeing the stations in them. I provided a screenshot of the stations in the payroll film, is this not a suitable reference? Similarly, there is nothing online which states you could see the stations between the places mentioned in the article, but there are photos from the two places and the stations are clearly visible in both photos. If these were suitable references I wouldn't be sure as to how to reference them. I'm sorry about all this by the way, I'm still never sure what is acceptable and what isn't hah.

Also, I've probably got the prose as good as I, personally, ever could. To improve it further is there anyone I could ask to go through and do such a thing? Fintan264 (talk) 13:16, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Armstrong Township

I have some question about Armstrong Township that you might have and idea about. Could you give your two cents. It's on the Armstrong Township talk page and article history. Namely the population in 1890 was well over 7,000 souls according to the U.S. Census, but now the population is more like 700. My thoughts are that the establishment of the water company surely accounted for some decline, but I doubt that over 6,000 people were moved out. Maybe the census included figures from South Williamsport and Duboistown? I don't know just how census figures are counted. Dincher (talk) 01:36, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I know Mike Dincher from the family hunting camps near the water company. He's a tresspasser just like me and the rest of us. I always really liked him. Thanks for finding that source! I never would have looked there. I've downloaded the B&W photos and I'll upload them to commons sometime. I find it amazing how there were no trees around the bridge in the 1930s. I understood your message perfectly. I was being clever and obscure in my reply. Get well soon, is what I really meant. By the way, thinking again about bridges has led me to start reading The Portland Bridge Book, which I acquired a couple of weeks ago. Fascinating. A bridge that I use frequently and have photographed many times just for fun turns out to be the oldest surviving vertical lift bridge in the U.S. Built in 1910, it originally had a wooden deck but now has an open-grating steel deck that "sings" from high-speed vibrations when vehicles roll over it. I noticed in the paper the other day that 30 percent of the traffic over this bridge this year was by bicycle. Personal research indicates that this amazing statistic could well be true. HAER photos

I noticed that you start your new bridge article. I noticed in particular the photos from HAER. I believe you could get a higher resolution photo from converting the original TIFF files into JPG's. Also, I was wondering if you were going to crop out the border that was created when the photos were digitized.

Can you take a look at the sourcing queries on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Ralph Bakshi and tell me if I'm out of line here? It appears that the editors are using citations to sources they did not actually consult, but that were sources for works they did consult. reconsideration needed re Saint Kilda

Please note the title the editor used originally, Edit warring at St Kilda. It was found to have extensive discussion that appeared appropriate for that editor to learn more about the topic. The issue raised had been hashed out quite thoroughly on that page. That is why the discussion was moved to the page cited by that editor.

When editors with a long history, who are listed on the “safe’ editor lists take the time to point another editor toward some information that should help them become better editors, why are you approaching it as you have?

The misguided objective of the editor even was discussed thoroughly, and explained as inaccurate, in the original article under the heading of origin of names. Why are you supporting an attempt to reverse edits that agree with all of the references cited in the article?

After I had made an extensive and time consuming edit of the entire article, that editor reversed my entire edit because of an already resolved single issue -- over the denial that St. means Saint -- when that name also is used in all hard cover encyclopedias, such as Britannica. The entire portion of the article discusses the accuracy of what I edited, yet my entire edit was reversed because an editor disagrees, without any basis in fact nor any reference to cite.

When someone's earnest efforts to make long and productive edits are tossed aside to support inaccurate and single-minded editors by other editors such as you, I begin to have concern about our administrators. Why is there reactionary concern about policies quoted by inaccurate editors -- without concerned about the issues and the accuracy of the edits being reversed by them? I am the one who should have posted a warning! I have no interest in these wars… I have too many things I want to make better to waste my time in edit wars for dominance of personal opinions that have nothing to do with accuracy.

Why aren’t you examining issues with the objective of promoting the benefit of the encyclopedia? A little more attention to the issue and the discussions involved at the very page to which the response was transferred might have guided you to react differently and to the benefit of Wikipedia. That was the only reason I responded instead of moving on to another topic where I could make a positive contribution, leaving the error to embarrass the publication.

I will place this on your talk page because I will remove it again from my talk page after seeing whether you respond. I hope you reconsider your entry and approach other situations more cautiously in the future -- in my mind the issue was directed back to the editor who raised a false alarm. Sorry for the delay. I do not wish to spend a lot of time on this, being more interested in going forward... and, preferring to spend my limited time—editing. Unfortunately, that may have led to the lack of effective communication here.

What I noted on my summary was a response to the editor who wiped out an edit into which I invested hours because of one issue -- has the Dutch notation S. Kilda been interpreted since the 1600s as Saint Kilda, and since it has been, is it correct for that to be noted in the introductory to the article? (Obviously now, that was greatly debated at wp.)

I do find it difficult to understand why an established editor would wipe out an extensive edit for one point (that was all that was noted to me in the counter summary entries).

This was as I continued to make edits to the article and another as well as respond to the note at my page. I have seen warnings given by inept editors as a power play driven by a desire to have their own person agenda prevail. I was in a hurry and failed to research the editor, choosing to refer the editor back to the page the editor cited since it even had data that supported the St. as saint discussion.

No request to go to discussion was directed toward me.

That would have been my next step with the original editor – but the original editor never continued the dialogue.

I am used to dealing with vandals who usually go away after their reversal is reversed and until I realized that another editor was participating in the reversals, you, and that you had placed your warning at my page -- I really paid little attention, presuming that the editor (I figured was a vandal) had abandoned the quest. I had reverted, built upon the contribution of another editor (having failed to realize that the second editor was responding to the warning if that was the purpose, mostly because an edit had been added with a comment about it). I added more after integrating that edit into the original edit I made... and continued to edit the article. I would not have gone any farther with reversals, not so much because of the rule, but because I simply despise wp edit wars and prefer to work toward consensus or thorough documentation if the issue is important to me. I usually back-off and reassess my entries if there is what seems objective question about them. This did not seem that way, as I noted previously -- it seemed single-minded and inconsiderately focused.

Unraveling such events does not resolve issues, but it I prefer that you understand that my behavior was not intended as it was being interpreted. Better communication on both sides could have kept this from escalating as it did into a donnybrook. I apologize for wasting everyone’s time through my inattention, but still have to admit that I am astonished by the massive reversal of an editor for what was portrayed as a single issue – and am not so sure I would recognize the intent in a similar scenario playing out in the future either. A single request to go to discussion could have sufficed and I expect that an administrator would exercise such a tool instead of repeated reversals when dialogue is continuing. The combination of recent presence on the main page and the typically associated vandalism precipitating a quicker response to revert rings a bell with me. I tend to revert more readily as well, when vandalism is occurring, and I remember thinking that the reverts smacked of it -- especially because of the sarcastic comment associated with the second, rapid-secession, reversal and a single, weird edit of something I had not altered. Skeptically presuming good faith with the second editor, I proceeded to integrate the edit into my own. I thought I might be dealing with vandals having some fun until your edit and obvious exploration of the situation. I had moved the warning for the first editor to see other discussion of the topic, and that editor ceased participation... now it seems that the editor was unaware of the effort I made. I intended just to abandon the article if another reversal occurred.

I continued only because your edit conveyed that you were sincere, "assuming good faith", and resolution was possible. Since you knew one of the reverting editors, you certainly had the advantage of relying upon their previous records -- as I said -- I was in a hurry, approaching being late for an appointment and usually would not have reacted to the second reversal without exploring the editors and establishing some dialogue if they were not vandals. Unfortunately, the time necessary for my response was not available until much later. I never participate in "wars" -- I usually revert what I perceive as vandalism, sometimes I will attempt to reason with editors who seem misled, but after a few tries -- I move on -- if the topic is important to me, there always is plenty of time in the future to correct errors with a fresh perspective after that type of editor is no longer engaged in a personal agenda.

I have the same problem. I tried removing and re-adding the map in question and the same problem is still there. Then I thought it might be a comma vs. no comma issue. It doesn't appear to be. Sorry to trouble you, but I wonder if you can help me fix a problem? I am experimenting with using a gallery in connection with a list presently at WP:FLC. The main list is on Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. The experimental gallery is on User:Brianboulton/Sandbox4. I want to know if it is possible to align the gallery centrally, rather than left-justified. There seem to be options in gallery presentation arising from WP:GALLERY, but I can't figure out how to use them. Yeah I remember you mentioning the book, what was the title again? Things are well, I haven't talked to Kranar much lately, he's been keeping busy with a cemetery preservation group near his town, I even wrote and sent out a press kit for them. :-) I plan on working on the Black Hawk stuff again, one day I'd like to see them all featured, but that is quite a daunting task when approaching it as a single writer, maybe one day they'll all get done. Regardless, through our work together, I think that series of articles is among Wikipedia's best. Shackleton-Rowett et al

Thanks for your great support re above. Another highlight of today is that Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration made it to FL. This was a tricky nom - I was prepared for it to fail over images, but all proved OK, without recourse to the gallery option. This list is the crucial element that will bind a future FT, but many of the remaining expeditions will be hard to get to GA, let alone FA, because of limited source information. However, that's a long-term project I'm in no hurry to complete. Today I'm basking in the shine of two stars, quite apart from the pleasure I get from this work. In addition to the GT articles, three of the four surrounding streets have articles (the one to the west has two because the street is in a historic district in that neighborhood) and if you look at the template at the bottom there is the Nichols Bridgeway. If you label the AIC across the street to the south, then you have to label all the historic buildings in the historic district across the street to the west and the famous skyscrapers across the street to the north. Yet another map help request...

I hope you are going to take a decent holiday break. I shall be off-wiki next week, in the south of France. In the meantime I wonder if you could ask for help with a small mapping problem?

In a move slightly away from the "heroic age" I have written New South Greenland, about an Antarctic land that never was. I need a map to indicate its reported false position in the Weddell Sea. The segment map in the article, showing the Antarctic peninsula, is the best base I can find. If you look at Map p. 52 on a different website you will see the mythical coastline, represented by the close dotted line, running from "N. Cape" to "mountains". This particular map is unavailable, but I need a rough approximation of that dotted line, running from 62°41'S, 47°21'W (N. Cape) to around 69°30'S. 48°W, the position of the "mountains", superimposed on my map.

The only markings on my map apart from the line should be: labelling the land "Antarctic peninsula (Graham Land)": "North Cape position 62°41'S, 47°21'W"; "? mountains, 69°30'S. 48°W". I would also like a separate dot, at 64°S,46°W, marked "Ross's appearance of land, 1843". I realise this is a busy time and I am obviously ready to wait, but I though I'd get my request in anyway. Leonard Harrison State Park photos

Thanks for your photos. I removed the gallery as they are generally discouraged in FA articles per the MOS. I did move the creek photo up into the article and removed the Important Bird Area terrace photo as the MOS says not to sandwich text between images. I also added a fair use rationale to the statue image. Could you move the gallery images to Commons so they are in the park category there? Ohio "Penndot" Maps

I need to get a link the the Ohio road maps that are similar to the Pennsylvania road maps we use in the Pennsylvania state parks. Specifically I need to know the county in which Mary Jane Thurston State Park is. Do you have the link? I am can find is web sites that sell maps. I don't want to buy a map of Ohio. I pretty much doubt that I'll be going there anytime soon if at all ever again.

New South Greenland Map

Mike Christie has suggested, during his review of New South Greenland, that the map ought to indicate Morrell's calculated position for 17 March - from where he thought he saw "mountains" 70-odd miles to the south. I agree it would be good to have this latitude - 67°52'S - marked. Is it possible to make another dot, with the legend:"67°52'S: Morrell's calculated position 17 March 1823"? I hope you had, or are having, some break from duty. The peer review on this article will go on for at least another eight or ten days, so need to hurry to meet this request.
