Recent changes

  • The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [1]
  • The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
  • The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the mw-reference-text class, Parsoid now also adds the reference-text class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [2]

Problems

  • There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [3]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [4][5]
  • The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a <span class="mw-cite-backlink"> wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [6]
  • On multilingual wikis that use the <translate> system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [7]

MassRFD

I tried renominating google.bb and google.co.bb as they were on Category:RfD errors for a month, however it identified them as non-redirects, so I had to revert the edits so I could renominate. Any step for improving this thing? --MikutoH talk! 00:57, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

MikutoH, not sure what to do here - I think I would be beyond the scope of the script to recognise what the redirect is supposed to look like. It's not going to improve the situation if it just tags the redirect as it was normal, because then it would be double tagged. — Qwerfjkltalk 09:46, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes

  • People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [8]
  • The new Community Configuration extension is available on Test Wikipedia. This extension allows communities to customize specific features to meet their local needs. Currently only Growth features are configurable, but the extension will support other Community Configuration use cases in the future. [9][10]
  • The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [11]

Problems

  • Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [12]
  • Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [13]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [14][15]
  • Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [16]
  • Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [17]

CfDlister random errors

While using the one-click close feature of CFDlister, the tool is randomly failing to add a CfDW entry to the queue. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 13:21, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

No, it just happens randomly, as far as I can tell. It closes the CfD with a success notice, but then an error message displays about being unable to load it into CfDW. If it happens again, I will tell you the exact message. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 15:41, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Looking at the source code, I think it was either line 304 or line 309 that was triggered in this case, which was a "delete" closure. It is also possible that line 314 was improperly reached due to the CfD header containing a hidden comment. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 03:23, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Gwgross, it looks good to me. The main thing you should focus on is finding reliable sources to demonstrate its notability - sources like the "New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission" reports are good for factual information, but not so much for determining notability. I believe Neville & Bagge is especially notable because it designed and built many NYC buildings that are now part of either a NYC Landmark District, or a Historical District on the National Register of Historic Places, or both. 68.129.242.114, for the purposes of notability, something more like [https://bklynbiblio.blogspot.com/2014/12/neville-bagge-and-netherlands-apartments.html this source (which is already present in the draft) is what you want (though that source is particular is unreliable). The New Yorker source is reliable, but I cant comment on how good it is in terms of coverage because it requires an account. The book references may qualify as reliable; I can't tell. In general, the subject is notable is it has 3 references that are reliable, independant of the subject, and have significant coverage (not just a passing mention).

Gwgross, it will be reviewed by a New page patroller. I have nothing more to say on the article, except that, as I've said before, the main test for an article is whether it is notable, so to give it the biggest chance of passing new page patrol, I recommend finding reliable sources, as I've said before. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:22, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing seven million articles before trying it. Hi Qwerfjkl! Looking at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 4#Natural history, I am currently reading consensus to keep the category. I see that you closed an earlier, related nomination—Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 April 11—for other members of the tree with consensus to delete the categories, and Fayenatic london (who supported deletion in both discussions) called for the previous discussion to be vacated if the result of the current discussion is keep. Thoughts? I think the best way forward is to close the current discussion as keep and restore the other categories, but I am open to other suggestions. HouseBlaster, sorry for the delayed response. I'm not entirely convinced by the arguments opposing; I don't think they fully really address the nominator's claims. I think I would consider relisting for more discussion. (Though overall there's still probably stronger consensus for keeping.) Reading this again, I have a few more thoughts: The arguments don't seem applicable to all of the categories; many of them have only a few members and so appear more OVERLAPCAT as the nom said. Some of the arguments are also pretty weak (e.g. that these categories are about history, which does not at all reflect their contents). — Qwerfjkltalk 20:40, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

  • Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility.
