Welcome to Wikiproject India

[edit]
Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! -- Lost(talk) 17:39, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Projects on hand

[edit]

Hi,

As I said on the comments page, the article very weak in maintaining a neutral point of view. The sentences like "They are highly revered for their unflinching readiness for martyrdom, bravery in war, high literary sense and deep loyalty to patrons." are unacceptable in an encyclopedia. The article is everywhere pro-Charans and a thorough copyedit is needed to make the article neutral. There is also a lot of original research in this article like "Charans respect bravery, loyalty and truth more than life." Also, I am quite certain that Charan mataji.jpg violates copyrights and is not made by Karan gadhavi. Same is true for Karaniji.jpg. In addition to them, there needs to be a dedicated section for history right from the beginning to present times. A section on social and ecomonic condition of Charans today is also required. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:38, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bafna

[edit]

on the article of Bafna,i say that i writte on Bafna FOR MY web site of Bafnawadi.com and i am the owner of that.so there is no issue of copyright.please see SANJAY BAFNA

Thanks Sanjay to clarify this. Often authors do not automatically hold the copyright of material for their articles. If web-site belongs to you, or you have agreement with web-site about copyright, in that case I would suggest you should write something like this on talk page of article, 'I own copyrights for the material of so and so web-site and giving it on this article under GFDL. pruthvi 16:18, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Striking your vote

[edit]

Hello Pruthvi.vallabh,

Thank you for your interest in the Wikimedia Board Election. The Election Committee regretfully informs you that your previous vote was received in error and will be struck according to the election rules, described below.

The Election Committee regretfully announces today that we will have to remove approximately 220 votes submitted. These votes were cast by people not entitled to vote. The election rules state that users must have at least 400 edits by June 1 to be eligible to vote.

The voter lists we sent to Software in the Public Interest (our third party election partner) initially were wrong, and one of your account was eventually included to our initial list. There was a bug in the edit counting program and the sent list contained every account with 201 or more edits, instead of 400 or more edits. So large numbers of people were qualified according to the software who shouldn't be. The bug has been fixed and an amended list was sent to SPI already.

Our first (and wrong) list contains 80,458 accounts as qualified. The proper number of qualified voters in the SPI list is now 52,750. As of the morning of July 4 (UTC), there are 2,773 unique voters and 220 people, including you, have voted who are not qualified based upon this identified error.

In accordance with voting regulations the Election Committee will strike those approximately 220 votes due to lack of voting eligibility. The list of struck votes is available at https://wikimedia.spi-inc.org/index.php/List_of_struck_votes.

We are aware of the possibility that some of the people affected may have other accounts with more than 400 edits, and hence may still be eligible to vote. We encourage you to consider voting again from another account, if you have one. If you have no other account eligible to vote, we hope you reach the criteria in the next Election, and expect to see your participation to the future Elections.

Your comments, questions or messages to the Committee would be appreciated, you can make them at m:Talk:Board elections/2007/en. Other language versions are available at m:Translation requests/Eleccom mail, 07-05.

Again, we would like to deeply apologize for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Dula Bhaya Kag.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Dula Bhaya Kag.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Aksi_great (talk) 06:37, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I saw that you have marked the image

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Harilalupadhyay.gif

as possible copyright infringement.

I admire the way you are continuously monitoring the stuff to keep wikipedia the most reliable source without violating copyright rules.

Though, as i have mentioned on the image page. That I am the owner of the site harilalupadhyay.org and hence i can claim the image as self created. I am permitting wikipedia to use it under GPL. The comments you can find on the image page as well. I am worried that why the image is not unmarked yet!!!

Please let me know in case I need to provide any further clarification from my side.

Thanks for donating an image of Shri Harilal Upadhyay under GFDL, indeed he is a great author and his article should carry a good image of him. I am going to remove the copyright violation tag from his image however I am afraid that will not be useful because once marked as copyright violation there should be a reasonable way to decide on whether edits done in the name of Jiten Upadhayay (copyright holder) are indeed done by Jiten Upadhyay. In brief either your web-site should mention that the said image is available under GFDL or you should send an e-mail to wikipedia from the e-mail address shown on your web-site that you are releasing said image under GFDL. Please follow the instruction at following page Copyright_problems#Copyright_owners_who_submitted_their_own_work_to_Wikipedia

Assessment Department

[edit]

I finally assessed your article - sorry about the delay (of 2 months!!) Unfortunately, it wasn't promoted to a B-class. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or comments about assessment in general, or are replying to the comments here. Ncmvocalist (talk) 05:22, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello..Good assesement on the Mangalore Article. Since, you have assesed the Mangalore article and you have gone through the Mangalore Article, why don't you yourself assess the article at Wikipedia:Good article nominations#Places. GA status requires more detailed review but doesn't always require a very experienced reviewer. Any editor who has not contributed significantally to the Article can take it up. Your minor contribution will help WikiProject India and it will be even your first professional assesement on Wikipedia. Remember, the guidelines for GA is not as stringent as that for a FA.

A good article should just have the following attributes:

1. It is well written. In this respect:

(a) the prose is clear and the spelling and grammar are correct; and (b) it complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, jargon, words to avoid, fiction, and list incorporation.

2. It is factually accurate and verifiable. In this respect, it: (a) provides references to all sources of information, and at minimum contains a section dedicated to the attribution of those sources in accordance with the guide to layout; (b) at minimum, provides in-line citations from reliable sources for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged, and contentious material relating to living persons; and (c) contains no original research.

3. It is broad in its coverage. In this respect, it: (a) addresses the major aspects of the topic; and (b) stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary details (see summary style).

4. It is neutral; that is, it represents viewpoints fairly and without bias. 5. It is stable; that is, it does not change significantly from day to day and is not the subject of an ongoing edit war. Vandalism reversions, proposals to split or merge content, and changes based on reviewers' suggestions do not apply. 6. It is illustrated, where possible and appropriate, by images. In this respect:

(a) images used are tagged with their copyright status, and fair use rationales are provided for non-free content; and (b) the images are appropriate to the topic, and have suitable captions.-->>>>>>Kensplanet (talk) 12:51, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for inviting to assess Mangalore articles for good article category. Tomorrow onward I am going on vacation and wouldn't be accessing internet. Fair use rationale for Image:Ahir woman.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ahir woman.jpg. You've indicated that the image meets Wikipedia's criteria for non-free content, but there is no explanation of why it meets those criteria. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. If you have any questions, please post them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 17:22, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stamp

[edit]

Please READ the fair use stamp tag.

"It is believed that the use of postage stamps to illustrate the stamp in question (as opposed to things appearing in the stamp's design)"

Do NOT restore the stamp, unless you start an article on the stamp. This can't be used in the biography of the subject of the stamp. Thank you. --Ragib (talk) 05:40, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you are mentioning Dula Bhaya Kag article. The image is used to illustrate the stamp and hence constitutes fair use. I do not agree that stamp must have separate article to constitute fair use. Unless there is consensus of editors/administrators to remove the said image, I will restore the image. pruthvi (talk) 09:09, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Malkaush spelling

[edit]

You are right that Internet use of the spelling 'Malkauns' does not necessarily justify it. However, many reference works on Hindustani music use the spelling 'Malkauns', as do covers for recorded media (LPs, cassettes, CDs). I remember chatting with the Gundecha bandhu (dhrupadiyas) sometime back and them also referring to the raga as 'Malkauns'. I am well aware of the origin of the name 'Malkaush', and it is quite possible that the preferred spelling has changed over the years, but in that case we should use the most commonly used spelling. This happens with other ragas also, for example Iman/Yaman has more than one accepted spelling. Just because Iman was the original spelling doesn't mean the article should be titled 'Iman'; we should go with current usage. FUtheresa (talk) 15:36, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I agree that spelling/pronunciations are not a static thing, they keep on changing with time. At the same time, I do not feel that popularity of "Malkauns" spelling is grown to such an extent it has out numbered "Malkaush". However, this is not the point I want to debate here. Often use of spellings are matter of personal preferences rather than their correctness, accuracy or popularity. Whether one should use american spelling or british spelling, same logic applies in our debate. The consensus is that contributors should be allowed to contribute in their preferred spellings. Once article is grown at least B-class at that point matter to be decided based on number of contributions, references and overall consensus. I request to leave "Malkaush" title as it is until it is at least B-class. At that point, article will have sufficient number of references and contributors to decide on popularity of spelling. pruthvi (talk) 04:54, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You don't need to use MfD to delete pages in your own userspace. Just add {{db-user}} to the page, and it will be deleted. WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

[edit]
Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

Current proposals and discussions
  • A discussion is underway here to reach a consensus regarding the use of Indian number names (lakh, crore etc.) in Wikipedia articles. Please participate and add your comments.
  • A discussion is in progress here in order to determine whether non-Western (including Indian) forms of classical music should be referred to by the nomenclature of art music instead of classical music. Please participate and add your comments.
  • Watchlist the Articles for Deletions page for India related discussions. Opinions from more Indian Wikipedians are required in many of the discussions.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Members section of WikiProject India. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 2 – (July 2010)). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

[edit]
English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:19, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
