A note
Hi and welcome to Wikipedia! When you tinker with Anglo-Saxon stuff, be careful that you're not implicitly asserting certainty where none exists. For instance, dates and family relationships are often reported inconsistently by the sources (typically meaning Bede and the ASC differ), and even the modern researchers will disagree too. In such cases we're not competent to choose among them, and we fall back to reporting the several versions, and ideally mentioning which authorities make which claims. Stan 14:38, 18 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Hi Sarge, can you mention the source of the image image:Anna_kourn.jpg uploaded by you and used in Anna Kournikova. Jay 15:25, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- The Upload page does have a warning about copyrights. Also there's a check-box which has to be clicked saying you have the copyrights. Maybe these were absent when you had uploaded.
- Anyway I'll get the pic replaced soon enough by uploading another with the same name. Or you can send mail to the guy at http://www.igs.net/~bmitchell/Tennis/tennis.htm and get his permission to use the pics of women tennis players. Jay 08:37, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Expanding the Foundation Series article
Just thought I'd let you know - for the Foundation Series page, I added some content re: Foundation's Friends. I just got my copy of the book last week or I would have added it earlier :) --Raul654 09:14, 23 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Contact me on AOL instant messanger (same SN as my username here) and I'll send you it in ebook (.doc) format. I've only gotten through the foundation stories, though. I really liked the Card and Turtledove stories - the Zebrowski one was pretty bad, IMHO. I've intentionally avoided the rest because I'm still progressing through the Robot series - then I am going to write a bunch of articles for them here. --Raul654 09:25, 23 Dec 2003 (UTC)
H. P. Lovecraft article
Just wanted to thank you for nominating H. P. Lovecraft as Brilliant Prose a while back. The article is to some degree my "baby" and it was a pleasant surprise to notice it on the list, the article having been posted there a few days after I revised it—not that I had anything to do with it <grin> as the entry was already good. But is it really brilliant prose? I'll attempt to make it thus. Chris Roy 07:11, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Featured articles on the main page
Uh, Owen, I (and I alone) choose the main page featured articles. You added Mount Saint Helen, which (a) is timely (which means it shouldn't be the main page FA because it belongs on ITN) and (b) an almost identical article was featured less than 3 weeks ago. If you want something featured, ask me on my talk page or on one of the related talk pages - I'll either say yes or give you a good reason why not. →Raul654 02:28, Oct 1, 2004 (UTC)
Thank you for protection. As the version you protected includes the blunt lie "237,062 atom-bomb victims have died, but this tally includes everyone who was in the city when the bomb exploded who has since died." that can be easily shown to be wrong with the link the other version includes - the cumulative death toll associated with the effects of the bombing was 237,062. - I would like to ask you to make use of the rule that the protecting sysop may choose to protect the version favoured by those more closely complying with the guideline on repeated reverts. TDC reverted repeatedly and even went on when he had admitted at talk that his reverts made a lie reappear. Get-back-world-respect 18:27, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)
A couple things. Do you think you should be protecting and favoring a particular version of the article when you are personally involved in the article? I would also like out point out that GBWR has also violated the three revert in 24 hours rule. Also the article provide by GBWR, unlike the link to the pathological report on the long term radiological effects of the bombing, provides no clue whatsoever as to how the "City of Hiroshima" came to its conclusions. Moving Popes
Was there consensus somewhere to move all the popes to remove their titles? Somewhere in the instructions for editing (I don't have time to look up a link at the moment) it specifically said to use "Pope" for the titles of those articles. I don't really care whether it's there or not, but this is going to create a huge number of redirects (hopefully not double redirects)... Mpolo 19:27, Oct 10, 2004 (UTC)
Yes, the decision to leave "Pope" on is of long standing and is useful for distinguishing Popes from temporal authorities with exactly the same name. I don't think this one was thought through sufficiently. Stan 00:45, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- I understand your reasoning, but it would have been better to post the idea for review at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles), which is pretty specific about correct pope nomenclature. The existing convention was hammered out after much dispute; the only way you'll avoid excoriation now is if all the original debaters have died or moved away. :-) Stan 01:13, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Deletionist campaign
Hi there. As someone who has displayed a fairly rational and objective attitude towards micronation articles in the past I thought you might be interested to note that the rabid deletionist lobby is on the march against them again.
The latest target is New Utopia, which although a poorly written article in its current form concerns a subject that is eminently encyclopaedic, being the latest in a long line of libertarian "new country projects" (and therefore representative of a notable social/historic phenomenon), being the subject of dozens of international press and TV stories, as well as the subject of a widely-known US Securities & Investment Commission investigation for fraud.
You might want to take a look at the VfD and respond accordingly.
For future reference you might also want to note the articles in the Micronations Category, in order to keep an eye on its contents; I’ve been adding a number of well-researched, illustrated, fully referenced articles to this category in recent months, but there are moves afoot thanks to a highly suspect ongoing arbitration of process to have me banned completely from writing anything at all about micronations on the basis that as the founder of one, anything I write is somehow self-promotional and/or controversial. --Gene_poole 22:11, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing
I was looking at the U.S. city and county articles and noticed that you've made some number of changes. I've chosen to multi-license all of the rambot contributions under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License so that other projects, such as WikiTravel, can use our articles. I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all your contributions (or at minimum those on the geographic articles) so that we can keep most of the articles available under the multi-license. Many users use the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or even MultiLicensePD for public domain) on their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I understand, but I thought I'd at least ask, just in case. If you do want to do it, simply just copy and paste one of the above two templates into your user page and it will allow us to track those users who have done it. For example:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. State article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain (which many people do or don't like to do, see Wikipedia:Multi-licensing), you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD -- Ram-Man 13:47, Nov 18, 2004 (UTC)

I think Sony Corp. v. Universal City Studios could make a great featured article. It doesn't quite meet the requirements yet, but it could with a little work. In light of the debates and cases about digital piracy and the obligations of hardware/software creators, the affirmation/modification/elimination of the Sony precedent is a key issue for the future of information technology.

Mary's vs Marys River
Just wanted to drop you a note about the apostrophe in geographical names. Basically in the U.S. the apostrophe is supressed in all geographical names, at least if you follow the conventions of the USGS USGS query form. I think they adopted this policy for all official names sometime in the early 20th century, much to the chagrin of many locals across the nation. The upshot is that basically there are no apostrophes in official names of features anywhere in the U.S. You're welcome to defend the apostrophe if you truly feel it necessary, but be aware that its no longer the "official" USGS name of the river. -- Decumanus 06:32, 2005 Jun 7 (UTC)
- Probably should move it back then, without the apostrophe, if you want the official version. You can always use the query link above to double check, but the rule does indeed apply to rivers. As you've seen, it doesn't stop colloquial local usage of continuation of the apostrophe, especially in newspapers (I used to copyedit for a small paper many years ago and can tell you that in many cases, the style enforcement is horrifyingly lax at times). I think it's good to make a nod to the colloquial usage. I tend to phrase it something like this: St. Marys River. -- Decumanus 06:48, 2005 Jun 7 (UTC)

Re: Anarchy
Thanks for your polite and insightful comment on my talk page, Sarge. While i'd love to have a world where hierarchy is no longer needed when people come together to accomplish tasks, we as a species are going to have to overcome millions of years of built in instincts that you probably know about better than I do as a sociology student.
Until that day, we'll probably need rules, even minimal ones, and make sure there's public oversight to see that they're enforced so we don't all kill each other. I mean, look at what happening with Bush and Iraq...
As for my comment earlier, I apologize. I was talking about group decision making structure specifically if I recall, a tricky situation in any group of anarchists.
If it were for the fact that I think Libertarianism is a right wing ploy from around 90% of the Libertarians i've met, I'd be a Libertarian too, which is basically "Anarchy Lite" it seems. However, it's more appropriate to call myself a pragmatic and individualistic Liberal more than anything else. --Karmafist 28 June 2005 19:32 (UTC)
Stub Sorting Project
Hello. I've noticed recently that you have been adding a number of stub templates to Category:People stubs. I just though I would pop by to point out Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub Sorting. --TheParanoidOne 4 July 2005 22:05 (UTC)
bio-stubs
Hi Sarge Baldy - not sure exactly what's going on with all the bio-stub subcategories you've been creating, but none of them have gone through the debating process at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Criteria, and many of them don't meet the criteria required for the creation of them. All of them have been listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Criteria#Newly-discovered stub templates, and we'd really welcome some comment from you about them. Grutness...wha? 5 July 2005 11:16 (UTC)
- You replied - Well I must admit I hadn't realized Wikipedia had entered a period of such bureaucratic morass that it was now necessary to receive permission prior to adding new form of categorization. Also beyond simply a means of categorization, it would seem radically POV to mark only some nations as "acceptable" choices for stub categorization. Particularly since it seems clear to me that the root category of bio-stub is choked and in need of additional categories. Frankly I see no reason to think I should need to ask before making such additions, and in fact would much rather abandon the matter entirely than touch the bureaucratic machine. So I suppose I'm done sorting these stubs, and if you would like to nominate any number of my stub types for deletion somewhere, I will not care enough to generate protest.
Stub categories are not ordinary categories, and require different treatment. They are there to help editors, rather than readers. For that reasons different guidelines are required in their formation. As to some nations being acceptable choices and others not being, consider the area I work in mostly, geo-stubs. I could quite happily make stub categories for eery country that has stub articles. There would be a category for the one Dominica geo-stub, one for for the four Anguilla geo-stubs, and one for the four Anguilla stubs. Which would be useless for editors and Wikipedia alike - an editor working on the caribbean would have to search through a couple of dozen separate categories, and namy of the categories would be emptied and end up being proposed for deletion. For this reason, set minimum sizes prior to stub category creation are set. Furthermore, since there are a lot of different stub categories in a specific hierarchy, the addition o new ones first needs to be checked against that hierarchy - a hierarchy which has things like one overally grouping for articles relating to both Koreas, since the history of the two countries overlaps to such a parge extent. Having two separate categories for North and South Korean bio-stubs therefore goes against that hierarchy, and only makes sense if every bio-stub for Korea was for someone born after 1950 (the opposite is very much the case). There is a reasonable amount of bureaucracy related to the project, but it is there for very good reasons. Even with ordinary non-stub categories, many are sent daily to WP:CFD - the same is true with the number of badly-created stub categories and templates sent to WP:SFD. When one person decides to create a dozen or more new stub types, without adding them to any stub-type lists so that other editors can find them, without announcing that he is going to make them or has made them, and without checking whether they meet the minimum requirements for stub creation (as detailed on all Wikipedia pages dealing with stubs), it causes a huge amount of work for the stub sorting Wikiproject, is of no use to editors (as there is no indication anywhere that the new stubs exist), and potentially rediuces the effectiveness of having stubs categorised. It would be good if you continued to help sort stubs, but there are many people at WP:WSS who might also feel it was better if you abandoned the matter entirely if you do not intend to work within the system. Grutness...wha? 5 July 2005 12:13 (UTC)

thanks for supporting me
Hello, just a quick note to express my gratitude for your support of my RfA. I'm sure I'll become a familiar face on places like the Administrator's Noticeboard and Requests for Adminship, as well as the murkier parts of my new job. "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48, NIV) Never was a truer word spoken. I feel empowered, yes, but not in the "oooh cool delete button!" way I was kind of expecting. Already I feel the weight of the responsibility I have now been entrusted with, a weight that will no doubt reduce given time. Thank you for believing in me. :) GarrettTalk 10:16, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

About Italian Radicals
Hi Sarge, the Italian Radicals are not that easy to classify. They claim to be liberali, liberisti, libertari, but their interpretation of the words might be different from English. They are a "fluctuating" party, i.e. they have rather volatile opinions on some issues, but definitely not socialists. They do not fit well on the left-right axis, to put it straight. --Orzetto 09:59, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
Anti-semitism within anarchism
I notice that you removed the references to anti-semitism within anarchism because it is not part of anarchist doctrine - but the page is not about anarchist doctrine but about anarchism. If you want to deal with issues by settimng up a page on anarchist dioctrine, why not propose such a shift. You have also removed the reference to Anarchist Integralism - which I have replaced. Perhaps you could explain why you are so fanatical about removing critical references to anarchism. Unfortunately racism is clearly part of anarchism both today and in the past. I am concerned that anarchists like you spend your time sweeping this kind of stuff under the carpet, instead of fostering a critical undertsanding of anarchism, so that people can understand its strenghts and weaknesses.Harrypotter 23:28, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

Question On Anarchy and Anarchopedia
Hey Sarge, since you're the resident Anarchy expert around here, I figured I'd ask you this question.
Considering that Anarchopedia is basically Wikipedia except slanted towards Anarchist topics(although not officially since they refuse to enforece it by their philosophy) and run with an Anarchist organizational structure (which still seems overly idealistic and somewhat oxymoronic considering the current average mental attitude of the human race), I was wondering what you thought about suggesting transwiki-ing articles that fit under WP:CSD over there in an attempt to reach out to inclusionists whenever there's a dispute and consensus can't be reached.
Also, what do you think they'd think to using the project as kind of a "resort" for good users who feel like vandalizing things every now and then due to the Dualism of humans, making sure that the negative side of the users' personality stays out of Wikipedia? I like to think that the positive attributes can be cultivated and grown to the point where someday the negative portion can be totally negated, constructively integrated or even eliminated from the human psyche (Nirvana?), but i'm skeptical looking at the way the world has been going lately, both off and on Wikipedia. Anarchy would be nice, but it doesn't seem to be able to work unless there is an unwritten covenant between everyone participating in the system(which seems to theoretically go against the concept of anarchy), or until it's actually some kind of "Post-archy" where people have progressed beyond the need or desire for interpersonal cooperation. Karmafist 04:20, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks Sarge, I was beginning to think I insulted you with my comment, which definately was not my intention.
On #1: Hopefully we and other people on Wikipedia can work together towards fixing the problem with the deletion process. I don't think it's as broken as alot of people say, but I do think it needs some work, especially in instances like yesterday when some guy asked to delete an article "Because He Didn't Like It"[1].
I don't agree with the whole "Voting Is Evil" thing, but I do think voting arbitrarily is. Voting isn't the focus, discussing ideas and trying to reach a perceptual consensus is.
I never quite understood why non-sysops couldn't see deleted versions either. I dislike censorship 99.9% of the time(the only time it's ok is if you saying something would almost definately cause harm in someway, and even then, that's not great.), and not allowing a "lower" user to see something smacks of censorship to me. I became a sysop a few weeks ago, so if there's a user who isn't a sysop but wants to see the deleted version and you're too busy, please feel free to send them my way. I enjoy circumventing injustice without causing other problems.
On #2: Since you're more of an expert on Anarchy, you'll have to excuse me for being perplexed on your answer. Wouldn't a block be something indicative of power, something that I assumed anarchists disliked? Is it ok when it can happen at random or it's not organized? To me, even Anarchopedia doesn't seem to be an anarchy with all those "Blocs" and "Factions" on there. It seems like a government to me, except it's a government of will power(I'll do what I want, and you do what you want, and if what either of us wants conflicts, it'll be decided by whoever is willing to go farther.) That's why I asked you, I was going to make a block of nihilists on there as kind of a WP:POINT thing and as an experiment regarding anarchy. However, I'm not a jerk by nature, I tried doing that on some political web game a month or two ago, but just couldn't go through with it because people started to get beligerent and i'm just not very good with Professional Wrestler-esque posturing. I still might make a faction based on Monster Raving Loony Party philosophy.
Oh yeah, one more thing. What's the difference between Libertarianism and Anarchy in your opinion? To me, Libertarianism always seemed like lazy man's Anarchy. Some of them are fairly cool, and I can even almost agree with competely, apparently(the Libertarian Socialists), but many others are just selfish people who only want government when it suits them and don't mind trampling on other peoples' rights in order to serve their own interests. Karmafist 16:06, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Hiya Sarge, found yr stub on Saul Newman, but you mixed him up with a completely different Saul Newman in the US. The post-anarchist lives and works in Australia, so I made a couple of changes to the stub. Hope you like them :)
Ensuring consistency
I have edited the intro of this the anarchism article to point to anarcho-capitalism and removed the section on anarcho-capitalism. This is an attempt to mirror the status of the libertarianism article in regards to the lesser known libertarian socialism, please take a moment to look at each article and compare. It is my belief that given the featured status of the libertarianism article, its relative stability compared to this article, and the clear similarity of the subject matter, this is a road toward a legitimate compromise. I would ask that the two major catalysts of the ongiong edit war of this article (RJ and Hogeye), both of whom have also edited the libertarianism article, please ensure that you are consistent in any standard you apply to this article. Hopefully this will help us reach the point of stability that the civil editors of libertarianism have been able to do in the relative absence of constant antagonism.
This message has been posted to the user pages of all the current major contributors I could find, if you know of someone I have left out please feel free to forward it. Revkat 16:52, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Anarchism and political compass
Sarge Without wishing to get into an "I'm a better anachist that you" argument (in part because I don't like the label and, in any case, I'm almost certainly not), shouldn't a pure anarchist be -10, +10? Not sure how an anarchist can support collectivism which is, after all, a form of compulsion?
Like I say, I ask out of interest and not to start an argument. ElectricRay 17:29, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Sarge, thanks for your reply - of course you're right, i did mean +10,-10. I am familiar with your view - it's more or less the Chomsky approach, which I've never found persuasive. It may be a justifiable or defensible politcal position (pretty much any political position is), and it may be coherent, but in the ordinary sense of the word, just isn't anarchy. The market is anarchy. ElectricRay 10:02, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- I see where you're going - but there's a contradiction there, isn't there, becuase to require a state of no actual rule by anyone requires imposing rules, pretty much on everyone. All the data and philosophical argument (Adam Smith in economics; Darwin, Dawkins, Dennett et al in biology; Axelrod in game theory) says when you take away all the rules (which is all anarchy can, without contradiction, mean) certain courses of dealing and ways of interacting will come about, algorithmically, out of the interactions of those members of the "ecosystem" (or market, or society, or whatever) that happen to interact. All predict that the best state of affairs will come about without any better rules than those - they'll promote maximum diversity, efficiency, and reflection of received value judgments amongst members of the community, exactly because people will tend to follow their own best interests, be it by being part of a hierarchy, or a beauracracy, or not. As long as they're not compelled to be part of any "~archy", then the invisible hand will work out which is the best. That's pure anarchy to me. Yes, *some* people will get stomped on, but no more (and probably less) than get stomped on in any other system. To me, banning people from voluntarily forming hierarchies in the name of preventing people from being ruled isn't a coherent or sustainable philosophy. ElectricRay 21:23, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Request For Protection Until Dispute Resolved
Hi, i want to know if its possible to protect the Gothic Metal article. A while back i performed a revision of the page after a near 2 month dispute on the articles contents. After intense discussion and several revisions of the talk page on the since deleted temp article, one of the users has proceeded to start vandalising pages ive edited. This user is DanteInferno. This user was involved in the debate in opposition to the revision i wished to make, which was made due to consensus being reached on the revision and the argument being abandonded against it being posted. Since the users return he has demanded that i am vandalising pages, and has claimed me of using sock puppets to make edits to pages, and has claimed several users dislike me and refuse to work with me. Both of these claims are unsourced. Dante also seems to exhibit Meglomanical Point of View, reverting any edits made to pages listed on his user page, on the basis he 'owns' the articles. I do not know clearly how to deal with this user, and i have posted this message to several admins as i wish to ask advice from several admins i have had no previous contact with, as i do not wish to seem biased. I hope that the page can be protected against this vandalism, as it is disrupting Wikipedia to prove a point, which along with the users other actions against me, is in violationg of several Wikipedia policys. Sorry for having to seek help this way, but i am at a loss at the best way to handle this users personal vendetta against me. Leyasu 17:18, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Participant alert regarding Wikiproject on Advertising
The Wikiproject No Ads, created as a backlash against the Answers.com deal, has served an important function in providing a space for users to express their disagreement with the Foundation proposal. While the current controversies about userboxes raise questions about political and social advocacy on Wikipedia, there should be greater flexibility regarding advocacy about Wikipedia in the Wikipedia namespace. Reported and linked by Slashdot and other press sources as a unique and spontaneous occurence in Wikipedia history, it has apparently had some impact as, despite being scheduled to begin in January, not a peep has been heard about the trial and proposed sponsored link since the deal's controversial announcement months ago. Currently, however, there is an attempt to delete the project or move it off Wikipedia altogether. Since the Foundation has provided no additional information and has not attempted to answer the specific questions that participants in the project raised, it is unclear if the Answers.com deal has been abandoned or simply delayed. Until the situation becomes more clear, I believe the group should still have a place in the Wikipedia namespace. Sincerely, Tfine80 00:12, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
I found this article in dead-end pages where it has been lingering for a number of months. The original author has made no other wiki contributions. As you have contributed substantially to articles in the PostModernist Feminism field, could you take a quick look at this and see if it is salvageable and let me know, otherwise I will put it on the AFD list. Thanks MNewnham 02:00, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
- No particular concern, just trying to make an impact on the huge number of dead-end pages, so I'm being fairly agressive on either passing them on to others for expert opinions, or getting them into the deletion queue. Thanks for your responseMNewnham 03:07, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
Sarvodaya
Hi Sarge Baldy, you just added Sarvodaya to the list of anarchist concepts. In what way is this an anarchist concept? I don't see anarchism mentioned on the Sarvodaya page or on Vinoba Bhave's page. Thanks! - N1h1l 16:02, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, it definitely seems to parallel anarchist thought, but I'm not sure that it should be included in a "list of anarchist concepts" (since it isn't directly an idea generated by anarchists or embraced by anarchists). Maybe we should add a section called "Related concepts" to the list? That would seem more appropriate, perhaps. What do you think? - N1h1l 16:41, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
- What else should be included? Perhaps Situationism and Liberation theology. - N1h1l 17:34, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Anarchism
No, no, if it's a banned user, you can take what steps are necessary, and semi is a good step (if blocks don't work and range blocks are too much collateral). Try to keep the protections brief though, else the banned user effectively wins by forcing us to restrict all anons and all new editors just for the sake of stopping them. Can I encourage you to provide explicit reasons in your protection reasons, as this will make it clear to other admins who come along — it's pretty hard to work out what's going on from a blank summary! -Splashtalk 21:29, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Indefinite blocks
Please don't use indefinite blocks on IP addresses, unless you know they are open proxies. In case you know for sure they are fixed, you can use long blocks such as one year; otherwise, use much shorter blocks. In the case of Special:Contributions/72.21.55.90, for instance, the edit patterns point to either a dynamic IP address or an open proxy. --cesarb 01:23, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Restoring items
Hi. Please do not restore something deleted by another admin without attempting discussion with them first. Most of the time, a resonable compromise can be reached - and the admin may have had a reason for his/her actions you arn't aware of. Discussion helps to avoid to wheel wars. In the recent usrbox case, which resulted in desysoppings, Arbcom defined wheel waring as 8.2) Wikipedia:Wheel warring (undoing an administrative action by another administrator) without first attempting to resolve the issue is unacceptable; see Wikipedia:Resolving disputes#Avoidance, "Do not simply revert changes in a dispute.". Yes, that came as a surprise to me too, but I thought you might like to know about it. Thanks. --Doc ask? 19:05, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

(See deletion log and template talk) I thought it was pretty explicit that Jimbo didn't want these templates and that they were for deletion? I suppose not. Hello
It's been a while since we've had contact (I was gone for two weeks and now I'm avoiding the anarchism article b/c it's a mess). Anyway, I've been very involved in the userbox restoration movement, as you appear to have been as well. I think you might want to see this manifesto I just wrote. I tried to make it a reflection of anarchist principles, but I trust as an admin and an anarchist you can add a great deal to it on the amendments and discussion sections. I welcome criticism and support for this if you are willing to give it. Either way, stay stong comrade. The Ungovernable Force 07:24, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for signing. I like that bit about ethnographers, seeing as I'm studying anthropology right now. I really do value your judgment based on what I have seen of you, and I was very glad that you signed. If you have time and don't mind, I would like you to help me maybe work any kinks out by adding amendments . It might take a day or two of comments though before anything that needs to be changed comes to our attention. As an admin you are probably quite busy and I can understand if you do not have the time or energy. Also, see the newsflash on my userpage, it is quite telling of the authoritarian nature of some admins on this site. Also notice that MarkSweep actually took my newsflash out and called it harassment of Kelly Martin. These are troubling times. The Ungovernable Force 08:30, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
Thinking ahead
- In short I think it's best to ignore the short term benefits of any action, and think entirely ahead. For instance, I see actions such as merging as generally worthless if the smaller article is notable enough to have an article at all, because in the end it will only need to be recreated.

Eros + Massacre
I'm afraid I don't know where to find the movie "Eros + Massacre" in english, and doubt very strongly that it is available at all. I haven't seen the movie in full myself. I've only seen few screen shots and read several reviews. However, I am familar with the actual events of Osugi Sakae's life, and so I was able to construct the entry by cross referincing my knowledge with the aforementioned reviews. Realizing that my knowledge would be iffy, as the movie itself could have improperly portrayed some facts, I left the entry somewhat bare. However, I had neglected to include two important notes. Thanks to this little reminder, I've now added two stubs, "Japanese Films" and "Anarchism," respectively. My hope is that eventually the movie will increase in popularity and eventually be released in english, or that fan producers will take it upon themselves in the grand tradition of direct action and create a fan-sub. Knives in V for Vendetta
Hey Sarge, I looked a little more closely at the comics, and I found a couple of things you may want to look at before dismissing this issue. In the chapter called "Video," V uses a knife against the guards within the studio. Also, in V's final encounter with Finch in the subway, he is shown throwing one of his knives to incapacitate him. These two instances would make "appears to kill using only his fingers" incorrect. Thoughts? Hedymiguel 00:53, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
That's exactly what I was thinking... The preference is obviously knives in the film, which is most definitely understated (though present) in the comic. Hedymiguel 03:43, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello Sarge Baldy. As you have done work on swimming content on wikipedia, I invite you to have a look at this portal and see what you think about it and how it can be improved. Also, at the moment, the news section is mainly about Australian swimmers, so if you can think of some relevant US content, feel free to add this. I have also created an article Swimming World Swimmers of the Year and have submitted it as a featured list candidate at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Swimming World Swimmers of the Year. Please comment on how it could be improved, etc. Regards, Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 01:55, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi Sarge
Left a message in the Talk:V for Vendetta film. It was aimed at everyone, but since I you're the only person I know who has a personal collection of scanned V for Vendetta pictures, it was mostly addressed to yourself. What do you think about this? Advice from someone who knows the comic would be appreciated. --P-Chan 07:03, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Something happened to the peer review
Hi Sarge. Something very odd. The peer review doesn't seem to be there anymore! (It used to be right after Genesis (Band)). As a sysop, would you know what happeend or how to fix this? I have a feeling this may have something to do with an order on the page to remove all FAC articles from the peer review. It is quite possible that someone mistaken the V for Vendetta (film) for the V for Venetta article. Thanks Sarge. --P-Chan 06:58, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Hey, could you please help the discussion at Talk:An Anarchist FAQ? Peer Review
I noticed that you did a peer review for V for Vendetta (film), a film based on a comic book written by Alan Moore. Presently, the Watchmen article has been put forward for a peer review and, since this is also written by Alan Moore, I was wondering if you could give an opinion on that article? It would be very much appreciated. Thanks Adasta 23:53, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

My RFA
Hi Sarge,
User:AaronS has alleged that User:Hogeye is evading his ban by using open proxies at anarchism. I don't know enough about this to determine if it is true, but the revert war going on there is ridiculous. I have asked for the page to be fully protected temporarily on the requests for protection noticeboard.
Additionally, I notice you are the blocking admin for Hogeye, so perhaps you can best determine if it is him editing, if so perhaps semi-protection is more appropriate?
I also noticed there is no notice up on Hogeye's page about the ban...
In this I don't know which version on Anarchism is superior - there are too many edits going on to keep track. Be great if you could look into it. Many Thanks, CaptainJ (t | c | e) 21:11, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- It looks like hogeye to me, who has shown no qualms of evading blocks in the past. The Ungovernable Force 07:42, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
BOT - Regarding your recent protection of Anarchism:
You recently protected[6] this page but did not put in a protection summary. If this is an actual (not deleted) article, article talk, or project page, make sure that it is listed on WP:PP. Please be sure to use protection summaries when you protect pages. Do not remove this notice until a day or so, otherwise it may get reposted. Thanks. VoABot 16:59, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
My bad
I reverted without looking closely. I thought the only difference was the spacing of where the tags were. Your version had the templates overlapping, and I thought that was the only difference. Sorry 'bout that. The Ungovernable Force 19:07, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
Juneteenth
While is is unfortunate that Juneteenth is apparently not a public holiday where you live, there are celebrations occurring in Oregon. [7] I hope one of these might be close enough to you for you to join in the celebration. I have now sourced the relevant statement in the article - thanks for your conributions there and elsewhere. Best, Johntex\talk 22:17, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you. It's nice to see it is being celebrated here, even if at a much smaller scale than elsewhere. Looking at that site it seems pretty clear it isn't something entirely known in some areas yet. For instance, Utah, Vermont, New Hampshire, Montana and the Dakotas have no events listed and Washington has only one. Although I don't doubt it's spreading into these areas, the article should still clarify in some way that events remain largely centered in specific areas, and that it's not widely known or celebrated in many parts of the country. Sarge Baldy 22:38, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, you are right. The article should be more specific. I'll work on it again. Johntex\talk 22:39, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Problems with another admin
Hey Sarge, could you look at this and tell me if I'm wrong for wanting information on this? I really feel that this admin is being incredibly patronizing because I am merely a commoner and not some big fancy admin. Even if my original request was invalid (which I did not think it was at first), I feel as if this user should at least have the common courtesy to explain these decisions to us. I don't feel like continuing because I can tell they are upset with me and I'm afraid of a block, but I really feel like I'm being pushed around merely for wanting information into a decision I disagree with. Am I out of line here? The Ungovernable Force 07:15, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

ummm... help, RE anarchism?
Oh wow, I have no idea if I'm doing this right. Sarge Baldy, I see your name plastered all over the Anarchism article and the pages it links to, which suggests to me that you'd be a good person to ask for help on this. I notice that when it comes to celebrities who endorse Anarchy, there is a disturbing lack of punk rock artists on the list. Now, I may not be an expert, but in my experience, absolutely everyone I've ever met that's into Anarchy was brought into the fold by punk rock. Don't these folks deserve at least a mention? Even as a general group? I would edit this myself, but for a couple of reasons... 1) I just created an account about 1/2 an hour ago (I read encyclopaedias, I don't write them) and 2) It seems that the editing for the Anarchism article is locked out, due to vandalism (which makes perfect sense... when the anarchists themselves don't do it, the opponents of anarchy will). By no means do I have a definitive list of punk artists that ought to be on the page, but perhaps at least the Sex Pistols, for a start? I don't feel confident to write this edit, but is there anyone who could? If you want to contact me to tell me what I should be doing when I see a situation like this (or to tell me that I suck out loud... y'know, whatever), I don't think a talk page is the most efficient way. Try emailing me at john.laduke@gmail.com, so as to assure I'll actually realise you're trying to tell me something. Or just ignore me... I don't suppose it really matters in the grand scheme of things. In any case, thanks for any help you can provide!

Hogeye evading (again)
Ever since anarchism had the semi-protect removed, hogeye started editing with IPs (probably open proxies) again. User:64.159.81.81 is the one I'm dealing with most right now. Others include User:217.160.230.161, User:Beeboe and User:FreeJohnG, as well as a few IP's that have already been blocked. I suggest semi-protecting anarchism again, and blocking all the socks. Also, keep an eye on American individualist anarchism, which is a POV fork created by one of the Hogeye socks a while ago. It currently redirects to Individualist anarchism in the United States, but hogeye readded their POV fork after I reverted it back to the redirect (calling me an asshole in their edit summary no less). Thanks. The Ungovernable Force 02:00, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I found this interesting, I am a prostitute, and have a unique body in that I am an Intersex woman. I have an ability to see both sides of the gender divide, and this is both disconcerting and thought provoving. I have genitaly an ovary and testicle, a vagina and penis, medium breasts and feminine/masculine looks and feminine voice. My body is slim and athletic, I am not very strong physically but i can be mentally strong. Being able to see matters in both feminine and masculine perspective helps me understand my clients needs in a more loving way. I work in my own flat, however I would love to be given the chance to work in a brothel. I love what I do and would have it no other way. SL x

Romanisation of Korean
Hi, it seems you have used the romanisation kolisuchae in the baekjeong article. Would you mind to give the original hangul spelling? It's obviously not Revised Romanization of Korean, which doesn't allow the string oli. My only guess that has yielded some search engine results was 거리수채, which would seem odd to call people. I think it's generally a good idea to include hanja or hangul if you're not sure about how to romanise a term. Wikipeditor 14:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for posting Image:Alan Greenspan color photo portrait.jpg on the main page. However, I noticed that you forgot to protect it. As per WP:PPOL#Uses, "A permanent or semi-permanent protection is used for: Protecting high visibility pages such as the Main Page from vandalism."
The Mprotected template should be applied to images stored here on the English Wikipedia.
However, for images from Wikimedia Commons, there are two options:
- Copy the image, upload it locally, and add C-uploaded. Or,
- If you are an admin at the Commons, protect the version at the Commons, and add Commons:Template:En main page. Then put Mprotected in the image description page here and protect the image to keep a local image from being uploaded here.

Hi Sarge, I emailed you about a WikiMeetup here in Portland, but haven't received an answer from you. Are you still thinking it over? -- llywrch 02:31, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry to hear about things. Been there, done that: it sucks. If you change your mind, you're still welcome to stop by. If not, let's try to arrange a WikiMeetup closer to your part of Oregon; I always enjoy meeting another old-timer Wikipedian. -- llywrch 17:36, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- I added up a brief description of the Meetup to the page at the link above. There were a lot of non-Wikipedia people there eager to meet Jimbo, & we Wikipedians -- who had not met before -- just socialized. (A Venture Capitalist based in Seattle joined us at one point; I remember it well because as pleasant as he was, he really wasn't on our wavelength.) I'm hoping that we might have another Meetup in a few months -- this time on a weekend when more people will have the time to participate. -- llywrch 19:07, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Regarding in the news
If there is no debate over it, then add it to the article with some reliable sources. The news on the main page should never contain information that the article itself doesn't have. The news is to showcase Wikipedia articles; Wikipedia is not a newspaper. —Centrx→talk • 08:14, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Anthropology project
I have communicated with The Ungovernable Force regarding the proposed anthropology project which you indicated an interest in, and have gotten the OK from him to move the project into wiki-space and make it active. He indicated that he is busy in school right now, but will be as active as he can be given that. The project page as it now exists is only a minimum page, and could use the input of interested parties such as yourself. Personally, I did noticably poorly in the one cultural anthropology class I took in college, so I'm bowing out of this one, but wish you and the other members of the project the best of luck with it. Thank you. Badbilltucker 21:44, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

white tea
The edits on flavonoids etc. to add white tea are likely unjustified. White tea is clearly a form of green tea, and there is mixed evidence for white tea containing more catechins than green tea. Processing of a tea from raw tea leaves to green tea can result in as little as 5% loss of catechins through withering and firing, while clonal and seasonal variations in catechin content can be greater than 25%. Some darjeeling teas, processed as black tea, have been observed to contain more catechins than some green teas, even some white teas, because of their growth in mountainous areas exposes them to lots of ultraviolet radiation and catechins is a protective plant response to this.
In addition, there are substantial undifferentiated processing methods in oolong and black tea, and it is unnecessary to differentiate all the types of tea if those distinctions are made directly in the tea article. Propose removing green/black/white/red/oolong mentions separately in articles such as flavonoid and just linking to tea, since this is not well established science and looks like a promo/advert for white tea, which can be sold at a premium and yet does not have any proven "health benefit", which is deceptive advertisement. Moving pages
Hey, I've seen that you just moved the on-going Ipswich murder/serial killer/whatever page without discussing it. This is confusing for other editors and I'm not sure your chosen title is correct since there have been multiple murders so it would have been better to include something about the fact that there more than one person had been killed. Also, have you ensured that no double redirects are now in place (e.g. Gemma Adams)? The last editor who moved the page didn't bother removing these which is bad practice. Cheers! A request for assistance
Would you support the concept of moving the Earhart "myths" to a separate page or article? The reason for my suggesting this is that the main article should be an accurate and scholarly work while the speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart are interesting, they belong in a unique section. Most researchers, as you know, discount the many theories and speculation that has arisen in the years following her last flight. Go onto the Earhart discussion page and register your vote/comments...and a Happy New Year to you as well. Bzuk 05:02 3 January 2007 (UTC).

V for Vendetta move
Hi! I just wanted to ask if your recent move of V for Vendetta (comic) to V for Vendetta means that, in your judgement, the comic has the far more significant meaning compared to the film. Thanks :-) User talk:Neonumbers/Neonumbers 02:53, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- Okay. I've never heard of that convention before — is it part of a WikiProject, or on a non-WikiProject guideline page that I've missed (which would be rather embarassing because I've worked in disambiguation for a while now :-P), or something that simply tends to happen?
- I'm not opposing it, I'm just intrigued to know where it came from. Neonumbers 07:26, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

"Official website"
Hey Owen, I see on Chemeketa Community College you changed the title of the link from "Chemeketa Community College website" to "Official website". I often find myself doing the *opposite* on articles (except leaving out the "website" part) and I was wondering if there was any consensus on this issue. I asked on one of the Wikipedia MOS talk pages and never got a response. My reasoning is that people are familiar enough with the web now that if the article is about an entity that clearly should have its own webpage, then we can just title the link the same as the entity. I guess it should be clear that that anything listed as "Official webpage" as the first link would be the official webpage of the article in question, but my editor's mind always makes me think, "Official webpage of what?!" Anyway, when I see people revert my link titles in the course of other editing I never revert them, because that would be silly. Still it would be nice to have consistency, at least in our little corner of the wiki. Any thoughts? Katr67 22:36, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Eros + Massacre
In February, 2006, you contacted me regarding subtitles of the Japanese movie, Eros Plus Massacre, asking if I had access to unofficial english subtitles. I have in fact recently found files that serve that purpose, available for download through emule. The files themselves are intended for use with the extended version of the film, and is split into multiple files for use with the film in a ripped version, split into six sections. Assuming you still have your copy of the movie, and are at all interested in translating them, you could rip them to your computer and place these files within the same folder as your videos. They will then automatically play with English subtitles. However, you'll soon note that the sentences are not written with the best of grammar. A bit of effort may be needed to edit these files, and adjust them for your versions of the ripped files. However, I'm sure that as a wiki editor, it's nothing you aren't you used to. If you are interested, I've placed the files here for your convenience: http://www.mediafire.com/?eyymyn2tmmw --Cast 23:38, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Translucence.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Translucence.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:11, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Notability of Hiam Abbass
A tag has been placed on Hiam Abbass, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Ozgod 17:00, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello again, its time for the next Collaboration of the Week. First a shout out to Sprkee for putting together some templates for this project. Now, in honor of Labor Day weekend and the outdoor nature of the activities that often accompany the three-day weekend, this week’s item is to de-redlink as many parks from the List of Oregon State Parks. Some may even by going to one of these places, a great opportunity to take a picture or two for an article. As always, participation is not required, though it is appreciated. And if you are caught, we will disavow any knowledge of your existence. September WPOR Collaboration of the Week
First off, great job to all WikiProject Oregon folks for last week’s List of Oregon State Parks work. We pounded out six new state park articles: Sarah Helmick, Bald Peak, Bob Straub, Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, Tumalo, and Peter Skene Ogden. Plus numerous other edits to improve the existing articles. As a reward, we are introducing the COTW award WPOR COTW award, and this time it goes to User:Woodstein52 for starting three of the articles.
On to this week. We are back to the usual two Top importance Stubs: Sunstone and Oregon, My Oregon. Both are stub pluses, so it shouldn’t take much to upgrade them both. Again to opt out or suggest future collaborative efforts click here. Good day! Aboutmovies 22:20, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

All righty WPOR ladies and gentleman, great job last week with our state song and gemstone. I have bumped them up to Start class. Welcome to autmun and the weekly COTW news. Great job to those who helped out with last week’s articles: Darlene Hooley & Thunderegg. Both made great improvements. This week, something a little different. With fall upon us, the photo ops are going to be harder to get, so we have a photo request fulfillment drive. Take a look at the requested pictures for Oregon category or the graphics subproject for what’s needed. Then go take a picture, or search online for a free picture to upload (US gov sites are great and there are links available from the above links). If you fill a request, be sure to remove the request template from the article’s talk page. Our other item is another red link removal drive, this time on the flagship Oregon article. This week is a Stub break, with a Ref improvement drive for Oregon and a request for work on Portland Police Bureau. For the ref improvement, this means sourcing tagged statements and standardizing all existing citations, both of which are needed for GA and FA status. Fair use rationale for Image:Evey.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Evey.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 07:01, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
WPOR's newest COTW
Thank you to all those editors who helped improve Cayuse War and Portland Trail Blazers last week as part of the Collaboration of the Week. They are looking much better. This week, with the election season over, we’ll tackle a request for Oregon Ballot Measure 37 (2004), which should have plenty of WP:RS available to work with on improvement. Our other article is another Stub in the High category, our only Miss America, Katie Harman. Once again, to opt out or suggest future collaborative efforts, click here. Thanks for starting the article! I'd love to have more coverage of Oregon writers (besides Kesey and Palahniuk), which is sadly lacking, but I've been distracted by the history stuff, so it is a good incentive. Hopefully I can get around to writing a stub on Frances Fuller Victor tonight. Helen Hall is interesting as well. Cheers! Katr67 21:36, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Frances Bean Cobain
Frances Bean Cobain, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Frances Bean Cobain satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Frances Bean Cobain (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Frances Bean Cobain during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. FA for WPORE COTW
Greetings boys and girls from the fine folks at The Wettest Place on Earth! A thank you to those who helped last week make some good improvements on the U of O and OSU OS articles. For this week, the next stub on the list is Fortune 1000 company Lithia Motors, Inc. way down south in Dixie, which only needs a little added to make it to Start. The other is a bit more of a challenge, but Linus Pauling I believe is our only Nobel Prize winning Oregonian, and a former FA. Replaceable fair use Image:Kristiina ojuland.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Kristiina ojuland.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add

, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 01:51, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Holiday COTW
Greetings to all the WikiProject Oregon crew. Happy holidays to those who celebrate holidays. Thanks to those who helped out with last week’s articles Oregon Garden and Robert B. Duncan. Due to the holidays and people likely to be spending less time on Wikipedia, the new Collaboration of the Week will run for two weeks (OK actually I’ll be out of the country, but same difference). The first item will be a general Reference Improvement Drive. So find an article, source an tagged sentence or bring all the citations up to WP:CITE standards. The other item is a Tagging Drive, looking for those random articles about Oregon that do not yet have a WikiProject Oregon tag on the talk page. In the past I’ve found the Category:People from Oregon and its sub cats fertile ground for the lost Oregon souls. Once again, to opt out or suggest future collaborative efforts, click here. A request for your consideration regarding CAT:AOTR
Hello fellow Wikipedia administrators open to recall category member! |
---|
I am leaving you this message because recent events have given me concern. When Aaron Brenneman and I, and others, first developed this category well over a year ago, we visualized it as a simple idea. A low hassle, low bureaucracy process. We also visualized it as a process that people would come to trust, in fact as a way of increasing trust in those admins who chose to subscribe to the notion of recall. The very informal approach to who is qualified to recall, what happens during it, and the process in general were all part of that approach. But recent events have suggested that this low structure approach may not be entirely effective. More than one of the recent recalls we have seen have been marred by controversy around what was going to happen, and when. Worse, they were marred by some folk having the perception, rightly or wrongly, that the admin being recalled was trying to change the rules, avoid the process, or in other ways somehow go back on their word. This is bad. It's bad for you the admin, bad for the trust in the process, and bad for the community as a whole. I think a way to address this issue is to increase the predictability of the process in advance. I have tried to do that for myself. In my User:Lar/Accountability page, I have given pretty concrete definitions of the criteria for recall, and of the choices I can make, and of the process for the petition, and of the process for other choices I might make (the modified RfC or the RfAr). I think it would be very helpful if other admins who have voluntarily made themselves subject to recall went to similar detail. It is not necessary to adopt the exact same conditions, steps, criteria, etc. It's just helpful to have SOME. Those are mine, fashion yours as you see fit, I would not be so presumptuous as to say mine are right for you. In fact I urge you not to just adopt mine, as I do change them from time to time without notice, but instead develop your own. You are very welcome to start with mine if you so wish, though. But do something. If you have not already, I urge you to make your process more concrete, now, while there is no pressure and you can think clearly about what you want. Do it now rather than later, during a recall when folk may not react well to perceived changes in process or commitment. Further, I suggest that after you document your process, that you give a reference to it for the benefit of other admins who may want to see what others have done. List it in this table as a resource for the benefit of all. If you use someone else's by reference rather than copy, I suggest you might want to do as Cacharoth did, and give a link to a specific version. Do you have to do these things? Not at all. These are suggestions from me, and me alone, and are entirely up to you to embrace or ignore. I just think that doing this now, thinking now, documenting now, will save you trouble later, if you should for whatever reason happen to be recalled. I apologise if this message seems impersonal, but with over 130 members in the category, leaving a personal message for each of you might not have been feasible, and I feel this is important enough to violate social norms a bit. I hope that's OK. Thanks for your time and consideration, and best wishes. Larry Pieniazek NOTE: You are receiving this message because you are listed in the Wikipedia administrators open to recall category. This is a voluntary category, and you should not be in it if you do not want to be. If you did not list yourself, you may want to review the change records to determine who added you, and ask them why they added you. |
...My guinea pigs and the "A"s through "K"s having felt this message was OK to go forward with (or at least not complained bitterly to me about it :) ), today it's the turn of the "L"s through "O"s! I'm hoping that more of you chaps/chapettes will point to their own criteria instead of mine :)... it's flattering but a bit scary! :) Also, you may want to check back to the table periodically, someone later than you in the alphabet may have come up with a nifty new idea. ++Lar: t/c 00:05, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
New Year COTW from WP:ORE
Happy New Year to all the Oregon WikiProject People. A big round of applause for everyone last year, we got a lot done. A thank you to everyone who helped with the last Collaboration of the Week, I saw a large number of articles in the unassessed section and our total number of articles is over 5000 (we were around 4000 in June when the assessment program finished the initial run) so I know at one person was busy tagging. Oregon COTW
Howdy to WikiProject Oregon members, time for another edition of the Collaboration of the Week. As you may have already noticed, our flagship article Oregon is up for the third time as we make a push to get WP:GA status before going for WP:FA. Since this will take some time to get where it needs to be, this will be the COTW for more than just a week. Also, so we hopefully don’t trip over ourselves, try to coordinate on the article’s talk page. Once again, to opt out or suggest future collaborative efforts, click here.
On another note, just a general good job/pat on the back to the project for a great 2007, the first full year of the project. We had 83 DYKs about Oregon, improved one article to FA, and went from around 4 GAs to 17 GAs. Plus numerous new articles, improvements to existing, the introduction of the COTW, and the introduction of article assessment at the project. Again, great job and here’s to a new year. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:ScaryStories.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:ScaryStories.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:05, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

31Knots
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article 31Knots, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add db-author

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Anarchist movements by country, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Hello fellow WikiProject Oregon folks and entities. Thanks to those who helped out with improving Vera Katz and History of Oregon during the last Collaboration of the Week! As you may have noticed, we have changed the banners a bit, but not our dedication to everything Oregon! This week, in honor of the political process, we have: Current Oregon Senate members & Current Oregon House members. Hopefully by November we can have an article on every current member of the Oregon Legislature. So feel free to turn a red link blue or expand an existing article. Since it is an election year, there should be plenty of newspaper stories. Plus, the state archives has this site that allows you to go back and see when they started serving and district info, plus at a minimum show they were a state legislator from a WP:RS. Juxtaposition COTW
Howdy Ho WikiProject Oregon! Time for another installment of Collaboration of the Week. The last few weeks we’ve knocked out quite a few articles of our current state legislators, and even a few former ones too. Great job to all those who helped make it happen. On a related note, we have had several DYKs from this and now have 53 DYKs so far this year (not counting multiples), less than four full months into the year. Last year we had a total of 83 DYKs for the entire year, and 7 combined for 2006 & 2005. So we are well on our way to another record year. Each time an article makes it to the main page as a DYK it will typically get an extra 1000 hits, which is usually far more than the typical 100 hits per month most minor articles receive. With that said, this week we have two requests, Portland Lumberjax and Silicon Forest. As always, to opt out, opt in, or suggest future collaborative efforts, click here. Thanks for uploading Image:Let's Stay Together.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Last week we improved Flag of Oregon & Detroit Lake, enough I think to move them to Start class, so great job everyone! This week, we have another request in Oregon Ballot Measure 47 and a randomly selected two sentence stub that should be easy to expand enough for a DYK in Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. QWERTY: Oregon COTW
Hello WikiProject Oregon participants, time for another edition of Collaboration of the Week. Last week we made some great improvements to Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and Oregon Ballot Measure 47 (1996), with a DYK for the forest. Great job everyone! This week we have another stub, George Lemuel Woods, one of only two governor stubs left, and should be an easy job getting it to Start class. Then, in honor of the long weekend, we have our second State Park Article Creation Drive. Lots of red links to turn blue, lots of opportunities for DYKs. Help if you can, even if it is only adding pictures of state parks. To opt out of these messages, leave your name here, or click here to make a suggestion. May the The Schwartz be with you. X marks the WPOR COTW spot
Guten Tag WikiProject Oregon team members! Great job last week with the Collaboration of the Week, we improved George Lemuel Woods and added eleven new state park articles. This past week we also surpassed the 6000 article mark as a project. The weather may suck, but WPORE is not. For this week we have by request Music of Oregon and Phil Knight. Both need some help, and with Knight we might be able to improve it to GA standards. Once again, to opt out of these messages, leave your name here, or click here to make a suggestion. Photo of Prairie Creek Redwoods trailside
Hello.
Just a note to say I really like that photo you submitted for Prairie Creek redwoods - the one with the tiny waterfall. Very peaceful looking.
We just moved back to the Portland area. But I had hiked the redwoods almost every 3 weeks while we were in Applegate Valley west of Medford.
Had a chance to photograph 2 groves while down there...
Grove of Titans and Atlas Grove
Those, and much of the redwoods, is what I will miss most about living in southern Oregon.
I plan to go back once a year minimum, if not twice per year. Well worth the drive down.
On your page, I noticed "Orick" on your things to do. I think I may follow how that topic develops. I know almost nothing about Orick, but find the place intriguing while driving through there, and would like to know more about it.
Best,
M. D. Vaden of Oregon —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.253.164.77 (talk) 02:07, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
A is for Apple at COTW
Hello again to those of the WikiProject we call Oregon. Time for another edition of Collaboration of the Week. Last week there was some good improvements to Music of Oregon and Phil Knight, great job everyone. This week, by request is the Applegate Trail, which is short enough to easily conjure up a DYK. Then, I’m trying something a little different, with the Portland State stuff. We included the two high profile schools during Civil War week last year, so now its time for the younger sibling that gets no respect to get some attention. After all, it is the largest college in the state. Feel free to help with whatever aspects you like, though to help with some ideas I added some to the article talk page. This week we have the soon to open Westside Express Service, formerly the Washington County Commuter Rail, so lets see if we can get it up to WPORE standards. Greetings WikiProject Oregon folks, time for another edition of the Collaboration of the Week! Last week we saw some good improvements made to Westside Express Service, while we also worked on a Coordinates Drive. Howdy ya’ll, its WikiProject Oregon Collaboration of the Week time! Thanks to those who helped improve Owyhee Reservoir and start some new Oregon newspaper article, we had four new ones. This week it is time for a Stub Improvement Drive. So select a Stub, any Stub, and try to improve it to at least a Start class. To all members of the Anarchist Task Force - about improvement of the AI-Wiki-page
I have just joined the Anarchist Task Force, and I have had some problems with publishing of my Anarchist International Wikipedia page, see my sandbox http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Anna_Quist/Anarchist_International for the present version/proposal. This page needs improvements to reach Wiki-consensus, and this should be a somewhat collective project to avoid a "COI"-template. As I am new to editing here on Wikipedia I need help with the page, I hope for your cooperation with this improvement. As an introduction to this cooperation, feel free to read this note on my talk page:
Any contribution, matter of fact criticism, to give input and advice, or even contribute to new sections, will be helpful, and is much appreciated. Please join in the project...

1 Year of the Collaboration of the Week
Hello again to those of WikiProject Oregon. It is time again for another Collaboration of the Week. The last two weeks were a Stub Improvement Drive, and thank you to those who improved any Stubs.
This week marks the one week anniversary of the COTW, so a brief highlight reel:
- At least 10 DYKs
- Three articles passed GA after being listed at COTW
- Probably around 25 articles started
- Almost all Top importance articles are now better than Stub class
And now on with our countdown. This week we have two requests, the Willamette Meteorite and Tom McCall. Hopefully we can get both to GA quality. Click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Thank you. Aboutmovies (talk) 09:39, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Ssssh, Be Very Very Quiet, its Oregon COTW time
Howdy folks, its time for this week’s edition of Oregon’s Collaboration of the Week. First off, great job the last two weeks with Greg Oden & the Hospital red link drive. We had close to ten new hospital articles and two DYKs () plus other improvements to the list itself. So thank you to those who helped out. This week, we have on a sad note Kevin Duckworth, and the Statesman Journal. Duckworth should have plenty of sources so hopefully in tribute we can get his article up to standards. With the SJ, hopefully we can get it above a stub so all three of the top three papers are no longer stubs, and maybe even a DYK and GA like we got from the Register-Guard? If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 22:18, 6 September 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 22:18, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Goodbye summer, hello Dolly!
Hello WikiProject Oregon member, it is time for another Collaboration of the Week. First, thanks to those who helped out the last few weeks improving the Portland Hempstalk Festival and the Munson Valley Historic District articles. This week we have by request Rasheed Wallace and the Oregon Zoo. The later should have lots of recent news with the new/old exhibit opening. Merry Columbus Day 2 all and 2 all a goodnite, beware of large windstorms bearing gifts
Greetings fellow WikiProject Oregon member, time to uncork a fine wine as it is once again time for the Collaboration of the Week. As always, thank you to those who helped out the last few weeks improving the Oregon Zoo, the Rasheed Wallace, Willamette Bridges, and the Vanport articles. This week we have by request Jim Paxson and Films shot in Oregon. The later can easily be improved just by adding some sources. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. And with Halloween fast approaching, remember that pennies really suck as a “treat” and you can expect toilet paper and or eggs on your residence for your “trick”. Tax revolt in critical care at a hospital near you
Hello fellow WikiProject Oregon member, once again time for the Collaboration of the Week in the land of Oregon. As always, thank you to those who helped out the last few weeks improving Films shot in Oregon and Jim Paxson. This week we have by request Oregon tax revolt and not by request, the annual Hospital creation drive. For the later, I have laid out some sources here, and the remaining red links are all over the state, so you can find one near you! As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. May the wind always be beneath your wings. Aboutmovies (talk) 08:18, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
It's sunny out, quick take a picture!
Greetings to WikiProject Oregon folks. It is time again for another installment of as the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. A big thank you to last time’s guest stars who worked on Oregon tax revolt and creating hospital articles, we had 3 DYKs off the hospital articles createdd. This week is the star-studded affair of the Semi-annual Great Oregon Picture Drive, starring Owen. You can go out and take a picture, browse through Commons for an existing one, or search for a free one on the Internet, and in some cases remove an old request (or even add a request to an article that has no images). See the bottom of this page for some links to a variety of free sources. Again, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. PayLess at Sprouse-Reitz for your G.I. Joe's, brought to you by Troutman's Emporium and Frederick & Nelson
Hello WikiProject Oregon member, and seasons greetings. Here at Collaboration Of The Week we thank you for your efforts making Oregon better, at least on Wikipedia, and hope you are doing better than Joe's. Or, in the eloquent words of some marketing manager for another now defunct Oregon chain, Merry Christmas from PayLess... Merry Chriiiistmaaaasssss!!!
Now that pleasantries have been exchanged, thank you to those who worked on the last two collaborations, the Semi-annual Great Oregon Picture Drive, and Oregon Country Fair and Geoff Petrie. For this edition of the COTW we have Gambling in Oregon and NRHP in Washington County. The hope for the later is to fill in the last few images (5) and then see if we can make it the first NRHP list in Oregon with an article for every entry (need 27). Fair use rationale for File:DOOM2 ingame 1.png
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:DOOM2 ingame 1.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Orphaned non-free image File:DOOM2 ingame 1.png
Thanks for uploading File:DOOM2 ingame 1.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 06:21, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
One last time for 2009
Happy New Year to you, you WikiProject Oregon member! Tis the season for one last Collaboration Of The Week to get started this year. Thank you to those who worked on Gambling in Oregon and NRHP in Washington County the last few weeks. For the final COTW of 2009, we have Archiving Article Talk Pages and Mr. Standard TV & Appliance, Bill Schonely. For the archiving, we have a lot of old, stale comments on article talk pages from before 2009 that should be archived away, so that new comments are not added to things that either were addressed or not worth addressing. Personally, I archive anything older than a year. Anyway, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Adios. Unreferenced BLPs
Hello Owen! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 12 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 12 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the unreferencedBLP tag. Here is the list:

Oregon COTW v 3.0.2010ish
Greetings WikiProject Oregon team member. Time for the first new Collaboration Of The Week in 2010. Thank you to those who worked on Bill Schonely and archiving talk pages. Aspect ratio of Doom screenshots
Hi, my name is James Haley, and I am the programmer of the Eternity Engine source port for Doom, and an administrator of the Doom Wiki. I wanted to let you know that you have misinterpreted the content of the Doom Wiki article on aspect ratios, due to its exceptionally vague wording, which I have attempted to correct in a recent commit. When viewing a screenshot of Doom in a square-pixel resolution such as 1024x768 or 1680x1050, to name a couple of random examples, the screenshots will appear inappropriately flattened relative to their appearance on the original VGA hardware. The tweaked Mode 13h which DOOM used in DOS had rectangular pixels, and while it was a 16:10 resolution by normal math, it actually appeared as 4:3, since the VGA hardware stretched the 200 vertical lines over the same raster space normally used by 240 lines. This means that to display such screenshots correctly in modern resolutions, they must be stretched vertically to the nearest 4:3 resolution. For 320x200, this means 320x240. Similarly, playing the game in 320x200 windowed mode with a modern source port will result in the same flattened appearance. --QuasarTE (talk) 23:32, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hey Quas. I know who you are. (This is Sarge Baldy). I don't really know about all the technical stuff. All I know is that A) the 320x200 looks right to me, where the 320x240 resolution does not and B) screenshots taken with doom.exe are produced at 320x200. (Although the screenshot I took for the Doom II page was taken in Eternity at 320x200 resolution.) But I trust you know what you're talking about, so do what you will with them. Just Out, COTW does well in new decade
Howdy WikiProject Oregon folks, time again for the latest installment of As the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. Last week was one of the more successful COTWs in recent memory as we really worked hard as a community to improve Concordia University and Berry Botanic Garden. Both are now at least C class articles and nicely illustrated (thanks to Tedder, Finetooth, and Ipoellet). Plus it really was a group effort as we had five different WPORE editors work on the garden and ditto with the school, with some overlap between the two.
Anyway, this week, we have by request the completely unrelated Just Out and Terrell Brandon. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Oregon COTW and randomness
Greetings fellow WikiProject Oregon member, it is once again time for the Collaboration of the Week (yes, I know they are not actually every week anymore). Thank you to those who helped out the last few weeks improving Terrell Brandon, Just Out, 75th Oregon Legislative Assembly, and all the unreferenced BLPs. This week we have by request Oregon Coast Aquarium and Arvydas Sabonis (maybe the Blazers can sign him as I think he's healthy). Both need more sourcing. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. And remember folks, the only thing we have to fear is death and taxes, unless of course the dingo ate your baby, at which point you may feel the need, the for speed to get away from said dingos, which in turn can lead to a failure to communicate due to the dynamics of sound waves, though at some point hopefully we can all just get along. Please, do not delete this - this would help many souls from hellish condition and spiritual suicide. So let it be here please, at least in history of this page. Hare Krishna.
A person who calls one Vaishnava a `big Vaishnava' and another Vaishnava a `little Vaishnava' may be peaceful and happy for now, but for how long will he remain peaceful and happy? On the preText of rebuking His mother, Lord Chaitanya, the supreme teacher (siksha-guru), taught everyone to carefully avoid offending a Vaishnava. Anyone who jumps over lionlike Lord Chaitanya's order and foolishly offends a Vaishnava will be punished for his offense. Please give me your attention and hear why Lord Chaitanya spoke as He did. Lord Chaitanya knows everything that happens in all three phases (past, present, and future, of time. He knows that in the future some demoni people will serve Lord Advaita. They will refer to Lord Advaita by the name "Shri Krishna". In this way they will reject the words of the true Vaishnavas. These sinners will thus disobey the devotees who affirm that Advaita is "the greatest Vaishnava". Many persons will consider themselves the followers of Lord Advaita, but they will not have the power to see how in the future they will be punished. Lord Chaitanya, the crest jewel of they who know everything, knew all this. Therefore He did something to try to stop this from happening. By punishing His mother, Lord Chaitanya showed the result that comes from offending Lord Advaita or any other Vaishnava. No one can protect a person who has offended a Vaishnava. Therefore one should avoid persons who offend Vaishnava. One should avoid an offender, even if the offender is otherwise very qualified. A little association with an offender will make one fall down. Who has the power to understand why the Lord gives punishment? By punishing His mother, He taught everyone. Anyone who blasphemes they who use the word `Vaishnava" to address Lord Advaita will be punished. He will perish. Lord Chaitanya is theSupreme Personality of Godhead, the master of all. To be called His follower is very great praise. Without any intention to deceive, Lord Chaitanya openly said that Lord Nityananda is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. By Lord Nityananda's mercy I know Lord Chaitanya. By Lord Nityananda's mercy I know the Vaishnavas. By Lord Nityananda's mercy offenses are destroyed. By Lord Nityananda's mercy one attains devotion to Lord Vishnu. Blasphemy directed to Lord Nityananda's servants never enters my mouth. Day and night I happily sing Lord Chaitanya's glories. I carefully serve Lord Nityananda's devotees. Lord Chaitanya is the life and wealth of Lord Nityananda's servants. A person who has only a little good fortune will not become Lord Nityananda's servant, for Lord Nityananda's servant is able to see Lord Chaitanya. Anyone who hears this story of Lord Visvarupa becomes a servant of the limitless Supreme Personality of Godhead. He feels that Lord Nityananda is his very life. Lord Nityananda and Lord Visvarupa do not have different bodies. This Mother Saci knew. Some other great souls also knew. Glory to Lord Nityananda, who takes shelter of Lord Chaitanya! Glory, glory to Lord Nityananda, who is thousand-faced Ananta Sesha! O Lord Nityananda, O king of Gauda-desa, glory to You! Who can attain Lord Chaitanya without first attaining Your mercy? Anyone who loses Lord Nityananda will not be happy in this life. Will I some day see Lord Chaitanya, Lord Nityananda, and their associates all thogether in one place? Lord Chaitanya is my master. With great faith and hope I meditate on Him within my heart. I bow down before Lord Advaita's feet. I pray that he will always be dear to me and that He will always stay in my thoughts. The two moons Shri Krishna Chaitanya and Shri Nityananda are my life and soul. I, Vrindavana dasa, sing the glories of Their feet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.132.82.156 (talk) 11:12, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of 24 Hour Church of Elvis
A tag has been placed on 24 Hour Church of Elvis, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.
Thank you.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add hangon
on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

Speedy deletion nomination of Tuxedomoon
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
A tag has been placed on Tuxedomoon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, individual animal(s), an organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject of the article is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon
at the top of the article, immediately below the speedy deletion (
) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate), and providing your reasons for contesting on the article's talk page, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. You may freely add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.
You may want to read the guidelines for specific types of articles: biographies, websites, bands, or companies. — Jeff G. ツ 19:15, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Jim Wright
I noticed you've been editing the section on Jim Wright about the aide controversy, so I thought I'd ask you if you think the wording about "putting her body in the car" might unnecessarily imply the victim didn't survive the attack. I'm trying to figure out the most natural way to reword it. Kansan (talk) 02:18, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
- I agree, the wording could be clearer. Just saying "he put her in his car" wouldn't necessarily be a good alternative, since that wording seems to imply that her injuries were not that severe. But according to Small, Mack thought she was dead, which is how she ended up escaping. When he went to the movies he left the keys in his car, and she drove herself to a hospital. Maybe the best thing to do would be to add some of these details? Owen (talk) 03:34, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
WPORE COTW 2.0 - the picture eddition
Greetings one and all. For some of you, this will be your first time receiving one of these messages, as it has been a year since the WikiProject Oregon Collaboration of the Week (COTW) was a regular thing. My hope is it gets back to being a regular thing.
Usually I would go over the past COTW, but we are basically starting out anew. So, without further adieu, this edition is our semi-annual picture drive. We usually try to do it when there is decent weather in the state, and today seems to fit the bill. Now although you are encouraged to go out and take pictures, you can also just search the internet for images that have the proper licensing and upload those. Flickr is one site that has a fair amount of content with the proper licensing (most images on Flickr are not compatible). See WP:COPYRIGHT in general. For some “free” sources, check out the our dormant subproject that has some links to sources.
Lastly, if you need to know what images we need, here are the requests. Please remove the request from the talk page if you add an image.
Finally (this is not image related), as the years have passed, we have lost many good editors, and others, like myself, are no longer in school or are working full-time or both, and thus are less active in the project. The project lives on, but it has created a bit of a power vacuum without a de facto cabal still around all the time. With that in mind, I encourage newer project members to step-up and fill some leadership type roles. Granted, we have no formal ruling junta or anything and no real defined roles, but there are many maintenance type tasks that some of us just took on to keep the project going. For instance, I ran the COTW, was pretty much the only one doing assessments, updating the portal, and even handing out the awards. I am sure others in the project can name what things they have done. The point being, that while I enjoyed those and still do some of those, I simply no longer have the free time to do all of it at a level that the project deserves. That said, I hope to start a discussion at WT:ORE where we can see if some newer editors would like to step-up and take on some of these tasks, which will hopefully make for a more inclusive project, and maybe get us back to the heyday of say 2008 when things were really rocking for WikiProject Oregon.
As always, please click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Aboutmovies (talk) 18:48, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
News page balance
Hello, I'm not quite sure I understand why you reverted my recent change to the news page. There is more to a balance in the news feed than a simple geographic balance. Currently more than half of the articles in the feed are sports-related, and that is a poor balance of topics. I removed the other football story in particular because it hardly feels well balanced having two of them in the news feed at the same time. Owen (talk) 15:25, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Once again, you seem to be demonstrating how out of touch you are with the section. I guarantee you that at least 95% -- at the risk of saying 100% --of the references to "balance" in the edit summaries in the recent history of ITN refer to balancing the left and right halves of the Main Page. By removing that item, you are introducing a large gap at the bottom of the right column (in OTD, obviously). I personally object to removing stories just because there are too many similar ones next to it, but even if I were in the same boat as you, there's nothing we can do here because the last story removed (presumably the one that'd replace the football item) was also a sports-related story (a Spanish sports-related story, no less). --tariqabjotu 15:41, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of 31Knots
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on 31Knots requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion (
) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. MikeWazowski (talk) 21:14, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

An alternative approach to splitting vs merging
Rather than a splitting vs merging mentality, how about an approach that has benefits of both styles: referencing. This would require the framework to be different, however, and some slightly fundamental changes may need to be made to Wikipedia.
Using this approach, the article "1997 Atlantic hurricane season" can include the contents of the article "Hurricane Bill" as a section within it. If changes are made to the "Hurricane Bill" section while editing the "1997 Atlantic hurricane season" article, this would in effect be making changes to the separate "Hurricane Bill" article. Changes made separately to the "Hurricane Bill" article would immediately be reflected in the "1997 Atlantic hurricane season" article by reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thermalite (talk • contribs) 13:16, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Newsletter
Hi Owen, I want to express my regret at the inconvenience you experienced. I was going to offer to unsubscribe you, but I see you already took care of that. Please contact me if I can be of any service to you. – Lionel (talk) 22:39, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hello, Lionel. Thank you for your kind concern. My problem isn't so much that I received a newsletter (which doesn't particularly bother me), so much as that I did so for a seemingly random reason. I am not involved in the Christianity WikiProject, and have not opted-in to receive these communications, so why am I receiving them? MCMcBridge pointed out to me that I am signed up for the Quaker WikiProject (I had signed up nearly five years ago), so that gives me the comfort that this wasn't, in any case, a random messaging. But I don't believe that I should be receiving Christianity WikiProject materials without request by being a member of a particular subproject, any more than I would want to receive WikiProject U.S. states emails without request simply because I am a member of the Oregon WikiProject. If I joined the Quaker WikiProject, and not the Christianity WikiProject, the assumption should be that I wasn't interested in the Christianity WikiProject, but in this case it was assumed that I am. Disambiguation link notification for March 18
Hi. When you recently edited 2002 Klamath River fish kill, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page American Indian (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Non-free rationale for File:V taking a bow.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:V taking a bow.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 21:33, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Request for translation
In connection with our article on the May 25 Houla massacre, what in my estimation appears to be an important new source has emerged in the June 23 article "In Syrien gibt es mehr als nur eine Wahrheit" in the Berliner Morgenpost. Given that in the past there has been much controversy over introducing sources which contradict the main narrative of the massacre, i.e. that it was perpetrated by the Syrian government, or groups loyal to it, I believe a high-quality translation of this article is necessary to facilitate a fully informed discussion about its use.
Based on past experience I have requested a translation from you as well as four other translators listed at Wikipedia:Translators available#German-to-English. Therefore, should you decide to take on this task, I would ask that you either give notice to the other four that you are doing the assignment, or to me and I will let the four other know. (I suppose, as a matter of quality assurance, two translations could be presented for comparison, but I don't see that as required at present, but if a second translator would like to duplicate, all the better.) I'm listing the other four below:
- User talk:Pseudopanax#Request for translation
- User talk:Marcika/Archives/1#Request for translation
- User talk:Mstroeck#Request for translation
- User talk:OberMegaTrans#Request for translation
Your user sandbox could be used as target for the translation (i.e. a permanent link to it would ensure its availability in case it becomes overwritten). __meco (talk) 08:26, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- Marcika has provided a partial translation as presented at Talk:Houla massacre#German articles. This is significant and will be very helpful in the assessment of the Berliner Morgenpost article as a source for our article. However, a full translation would be preferrable, so I will let the request stand in case any of the translators (including Marcika) will see it possible to produce this. __meco (talk) 08:49, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Interview for masters thesis about wikipedia
Dear Owen, I am a graduate student of Information Studies at Aarhus University, Denmark, and I am working on my master's thesis which is about wikipedia, more specifically the Wikipedia community and how the knowledge in Wikipedia is constructed. In my research I am - among other things - going to focus on the construction of academic knowledge in Wikipedia. Since you are the founder of the, Sociology WikiProject I would like to ask you if you would be willing to do an interview about the way you work with Wikipedia, how it integrates with your daily life, and what motivates you to contribute, how you view the knowledge in Wikipedia etc. Since I live in Denmark the interview will be held through skype or a similar service.
If you are interested or if you would like to know more about me/my thesis, feel free to contact me at anders@thorb.org or through my talk page.
I am looking forward to hearing from you!

- The sanctions are already authorized for anything dealing with transgender issues, so you can just determine the sanction and apply it. --Rschen7754 21:52, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Requesting edit on my behalf
Hi, Owen, I am a user that has been blocked from editing the Robert Kagan page by some sort of automatic bot by a bugger user know as evergreen. I saw your intervention the other day on the issue regarding Kagan's jewish description on his info box. I was wondering whether you can edit the Kagan info box on my behalf and add in the jewish description as follows:
ethnicity = Ashkenazi Jew[1]
Some people used the pretext that the Jewish parameter in the info box lacked a citation as an excuse to get rid of the Jewish description, So I have added in a citation.
Thank You, your help would be greatly appreciated.182.55.88.216 (talk) 03:12, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hello. It's great you've found a source but I've recused myself from that discussion. When I brought it up on the Administrator's Noticeboard the consensus seemed to be that citation or not, a user is not required to have their ethnicity listed (although I see no actual policy stating this), and I know from previous discussion that User:Wixifixer is Robert Kagan. Owen (talk) 03:19, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- It's okay if that's the case. How come you are sure that Wikifixer is the neo con Kagan?182.55.88.216 (talk) 03:54, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- He has said so before on the talk page. cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Robert_Kagan&diff=250463114&oldid=250462764 And his actions surely don't belie that he is who he says he is. Owen (talk) 05:01, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Any Tom, Dick or Harry can claim that he is Robert Kagan on wikipedia. I have not seen evidence that shows that Wikifixer is Kagan. I don't consider Wikifixer to be the neo con Kagan unless there is hard evidence to prove it.182.55.88.216 (talk) 05:19, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection
Hello, Owen. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
- A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers
Hi Owen.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Can you help verify translations of articles from German
Hello Owen,
Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from German to English Wikipedia?
This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original German article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:
There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including German , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from German. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.
If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:
All you have to do, is compare the English article to the German article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the Pass and Fail templates may be useful here). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then assessing it, that's even better, but it isn't required.) Also please note that we are assessing accuracy not completeness, so if the English article is much shorter that is okay, as long as whatever has been translated so far is factually accurate.
If you can help, please ping me here to let me know. You can add your pass/fails above, right next to each link, or you may indicate your results below. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 06:44, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Cascadia Wildlands
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Cascadia Wildlands, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. - CHAMPION (talk) (contributions) (logs) 01:35, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
