The fish we eat

What do you think of this?

I tried finding such an article to identify some fish I bought at the market. I am sure others do this too, only to find the article doesn't exist. Surely, every country or continent has a dozen or two really common market and restaurant fish and people want to know what they are.

I found via Seafood, this ref: ftp://ftp.fao.org/FI/STAT/summary/default.htm

Hi A.F.: Perhaps the title "List of most commonly harvested fish" (simply omitting the word "the" in the present title) would suffice. It's functional to not use the term seafood in the title, because doing so would omit freshwater fish from the list, as seafood is the term for sea life in the oceans (saltwater fish). A.F.: No. Bivalves are classified as phylum Mollusca, whereas fish are classified in phylum Chordate. Crustaceans, such as crab, are classified in phylum Arthropoda. Basically, shellfish, mollusks, bivalves and crustaceans are not fish. NorthAmerica1000 16:08, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Now I'm starting to thing along different lines. Commonly means on many occasions. But this is not about how many times, but how much mass, right? AF: To include quantification in the title, I recommend: "List of harvested aquatic animals by weight". This is in part because fish harvests are not limited to commercial endeavors. Also, tons and tonnes have varying definitions in the U.K. and the U.S., so I would use the word weight, and include information about which definition of ton/tonne is being used in the article. If you want the list limited to commercial harvests, then "List of commercially-harvested aquatic animals by weight" would work. NorthAmerica1000 16:50, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Okay, I've gone bonkers now and must sleep. None of these sound right. Maybe a fisheries project post is best. And I always thought it was a British spelling thing about tonne and ton. They should fix that. On this other planet, they have the "tenne"? It doesn't matter how heavy a tenne is, so long as there are ten of them. AF: To add even more to the matter, there are also aquatic animals that are harvested for aquarium use. Check out this interesting 2012 article from Roger Williams University: Marine Aquarium Fish Trade Study Reveals Fewer Fish, More Species Imported. Sure, but because the list is about the most in terms of weight, aquarium fishes won't be on the list. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 17:07, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

AF: At any rate, the title "List of harvested aquatic animals by weight" would not limit the list to commercial-only, although it's likely that harvests with the highest quantities are going to be performed by commercial operations anyway. NorthAmerica1000 17:14, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Request for adminship

Pre-RfA discussion (extended content)

After significant consideration, I have decided to move forward with another request for adminship. Per this previous discussion on my talk page and this recent discussion, I am seeking nominators and potential co-nominators, and this area of my talk page may be used for discussion. Also, I enabled email from other users today for my account.

Some matters that I have thought over:

  • Please see this previous discussion on my talk page for extensive discussion and commentary that occurred
  • FeydHuxtable and Stalwart111 have both recommended Spartaz as a nominator, as per this discussion
  • I'm looking to commence on November 15, 2014. This will provide ample time for people to discuss here and for me to wrap up some loose ends and write answers for the first three standard questions for the candidate.
  • Due to a high number of relistings and deletion sorting I have performed for deletion discussions, standard queries using AfD Stats produces muddled results. There are also some errors occurring in the lists AfD stats generates, in which it lists my having !voted in various discussions where this did not occur. Please see User:Northamerica1000/AfD statistics for an overview regarding these matters and for custom AfD Stats queries, which produce better results.
  • Since people routinely use AfD stats when considering RfAs, background regarding AfD Stats matters and a link to my AfD statistics page (linked above) should likely be stated somewhere in the RfA, preferably in the nomination area so it is not missed.
  • It would likely be beneficial to include links within a nomination to provide an overview of deletion work I have performed, so that participants at the RfA are aware of these contributions:

Overview

A significant part of the work I have performed on Wikipedia is in areas of deletion, such as closing AfD discussions, performing speedy deletion nominations and managing the AfD logs and discussions, such as performing relistings and deletion sorting. I routinely encounter and pass over AfD discussions with clear consensuses for deletion, because I cannot delete articles. The tools would enable me to use my skills to delete articles in accordance with Wikipedia's Deletion policy, when consensus is for this to occur.

In areas of speedy deletion, my extensive experience in performing nominations has led to my acquisition of all of the procedures and policies (e.g. Criteria for speedy deletion) upon which it is based. I have the skills and abilities to accurately identify content that should be speedy deleted, which my CSD log demonstrates. Thus, acquisition of the tools would enable me to perform deletions of speedy deletion candidates.

I have the skills, ability and knowledge to use the tools properly and with precision, and look forward to the prospect of adminship to better-enable my contributions to English Wikipedia. NorthAmerica1000 12:24, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

You might want to look at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Northamerica1000 and think how you could show that concerns raised there have been dealt with. I have few questions (I'm asking here just to keep this in one place). NA1000, have you ever been in a conflict with another editor in the past 1 year for your AfD closings? Have you ever been taken to ANI for any of your NAC closing in the last 6 months? I observed your edits of the last few weeks and I'm quite impressed. But I have seen no participation in Afd discussions in the last few weeks? You have relisted lots of Afds and have done many NAC but no involvement in the discussion (pardon me if I have missed something). I haven't seen your Afd stats (There is a technical problem) can you refer me to some of your Afds where you participated in the past few weeks? Another thing, I have seen many "no consensus" closings, have you ever considered to participate in the discussion instead closing it as no consensus? User:Jim Cartar: There have been some disagreements about some AfD closures I have performed, which will occur from time-to-time for anyone that routinely closes discussions, but not what I would describe as conflict. Matters are typically worked out in discussion on my user talk page. See my talk page archives for examples, such as 1, 2, 3, 4. I have not been taken to ANI for anything for almost three years. Some recent AfD discussions I have contributed to include 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Regarding my AfD stats, see my AfD statistics page for an overview and a way to view them.   • I've been an admin for about 10 years and spend most of my time on AfD. I've seen Northamerica1000 doing a lot of work there (doing non-admin closings), and for the most part, he's impressed me as somebody who knows what he's doing and has good judgement.   • I remain ready and willing to craft a co-nomination but I certainly wouldn't feel aggrieved if others were to put their hands up in my place. I'll remain just as supportive and my willingness to hand co-nom privileges over to others shouldn't be seen as wavering on my part. I've never nominated before; I've never even actively supported someone for adminship before. I've showed up to vote, or ask questions, or blather about something, but that's it. I suppose I thought there might be some benefit in the fact that NA1K and I have disagreed at plenty of AFDs (like this one) and he has closed plenty of discussions as "no consensus" despite my strong personal opinion one way or the other. Despite this, I actively support his being given the tools that would allow him to decide AFDs not "in my favour". In fact, his thoughtful "no consensus" close of a discussion along those lines was what prompted me to show up here and advocate for another run. Hi Stalwart111: A nomination based upon differences of opinion we have had in the past at various AfD discussions or upon closes that did not correspond with your !voting has the potential to polarize the RfA based upon sporadic examples, rather than presenting an overview of the extensive and various work I have performed in all areas of deletion on Wikipedia. Regarding my discussion closures, they're based upon overall consensuses in discussions (or lack thereof for NC closes) and input from all users. In this manner, a no consensus close for an article you have have !voted to keep or delete is not a difference of opinion, because all commentary/!votes are taken into account when closing discussions relative to Wikipedia guidelines and policies, and I never close discussions that I have !voted in. I'm also a little nervous that mine would be your first nomination, and it may be more functional for users who have more experience to nominate/co-nominate. Re your RFA. Quick pep talk since hell week is living up to its name. I didn't expect it to be plain sailing and some people were bound to oppose based on your previous RFA history. Remember that not all opposes are equal and you are already well settled towards the lower end of the promote range. You are doing a good job by not responding to the opposes, it never ends well and has the danger of looking like badgering when you do discuss/challenge. Keep it up and you should be fine. Short of a smoking gun emerging its unlikely now the overall balance will change significantly. even if you lose a few points and slip into discretionary id not expect all the oppose votes to get full weight. Hi. I brought this up at the RfA but it's kind of off-topic, but I'll give you my thoughts.

I like the idea of a group that monitors AfD and looks for articles that can be "rescued" by improving them. I'd normally expect this to cover historical or foreign articles where obvious sources can't be found on the end of a vanilla google search, and keep content that really should be kept, but just can't obviously be proven to be deserving.

Where the ARS has gone wrong is I think its reputation of editors (and I don't think you're the worst offender in this group at all!) randomly turning up to !vote "keep" at any AfD without any serious and substantial, frustrating everyone else. I suspect this is because actually rescuing an article from AfD (eg: University of Michigan Men's Glee Club) can be quite hard work, whereas joining a club and writing "keep" ... isn't!

Anyway, that's sort of my views. As to whether anyone can reform ARS in that manner and transform its reputation, who knows?

PS: Sorry about voting "oppose" in the RfA. I don't like coming across as a kitten-stomping old grump, and fully appreciate it's not nice news. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:44, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Hi Ritchie: To reiterate (and provide context for other readers who may come along here), I resigned from the project over two years ago, and haven't been involved with its membership. Presently, I'm just too busy with other endeavors to begin an analysis of the project's present state. If you're interested in making changes there, I recommend posting your ideas on its talk page, where others may provide more immediate input.
Nowadays, I collaborate with editors at WikiProject Today's articles for improvement to improve articles. I noticed that you're not a member of WP:TAFI, so be sure to check it out if you're interested in collaborative article improvement. NorthAmerica1000 15:47, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Relisting AfD

I saw your relisting of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of National Basketball Association career 4-point play leaders. Given that there were seven participants (including nominator) already, and ignoring for the moment the arguments made by them, it seems borderline at best for a non-admin action. This type of relist does not appear to be recommended at either Wikipedia:Deletion process or Wikipedia:Non-admin closure. I won't revert your action, but you may want to revisit it on your own. I understand that per the levels of participation, the discussion could be interpreted as having received substantive debate, and that per WP:RELIST, relisting should not be substituted for a NC closure.   • The move from Bugzilla to Phabricator is done. You can now report bugs in Phabricator. [3]

Problems

  • There was a problem when editing tables in VisualEditor. VisualEditor was trying to fix bad values for the colspan or rowspan option. VisualEditor now leaves the bad values to avoid making things worse. This was fixed on November 17. [4]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf9) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since November 19. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 25, and on all Wikipedias from November 26 (calendar).
  • You will be able to try VisualEditor on many new wikis for the first time. After November 26, VisualEditor will become available on Wikidata, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews wikis. You can find it in your Beta options. [5]
  • VisualEditor now tells you if your edit needs to be approved. [6]

Just to be mean

This is probably before your time being the young lad you are, but Give it to Mikey, he'll eat anything is an article begging to be created, and I just don't have the time for something this complicated by myself. It is an expressing that has fallen into common use, often parodied or satirized, and it all started with this. [10] Because it is a food related yet cultural type article, I thought you might find it interesting and worth exploring. You do very well at this kind of stuff, a talent I wish I shared, which of course is why I'm sharing this burden. You aren't obligated, of course, I just found it interesting. He was such a cultural icon that a whole separate urban legend grew up around him, or rather around the child actor who played him. Mikey likes it: notable national advertising campaigns in the U.S. from the early 1970s to hawk mass-produced breakfast cereal have a place somewhere. There's presently no article for Food advertising, but some content on Wikipedia includes: Adolescents and food marketing – Food advertising, Criticism of advertising – Food advertising and Fast food advertising. From the Little Mikey article, the overall campaign appears to have had a lasting impact, likely due to it being (per the article) "one of the longest continuously running commercial campaigns ever aired." Dennis, I agree the "Little Mikey" article doesn't do justice to the campaign. The Life Cereal article claims they later reprised the ad, same situation, same dialog, but with lumberjacks instead of little boys. I'd love to see that.
North, you're right, that topic is in need of an article. We seem to be sadly lacking in famous ads/slogans for food. Where's the article about "breakfast of champions" or "two scoops" or "good to the last drop" for instance? We do have categories worth of Fast Food Advertising and Cereal Advertising Characters. Definitely fits within the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject Brands (which NA1k started, of course). This is exactly the kind of "marketing" articles I like to see, where we are talking about history and popular culture, not some spamlinked new biz. I haven't looked, but Mr. Wiffle, Rosie, Speedy (Alka Seltzer) and many other long running champagnes were more than commercials, they were advertising icons in an era when even the cable companies couldn't find enough broadcasters to fill the 12 numbers on the TV dial. They were memes, many before word was coined in the 70s. With 500 channels on TV (and still nothing on) plus the internet, we see memes that spread like wildfire now, but none that have this longevity. Glad I came here, a simple article turned into a very interesting and broad cultural idea. I'm not sure if Food advertising really is the right title, that is very generic. Television advertising memes in the 20th century may seem long, but is specific in scope and time. You could drop "television", but that obligates us to search in print as well, and while they overlap, I think narrowing to TV, the new mass media tools then, makes sense. The closest thing I can think of is the article that build with Eric, 1950s American automobile culture, which was about products but more importantly the cultural impact they had. We did manage to get it to GA, my first. We took individual elements and expanded on them, as they applied to the overarching theme. Dennis - 2¢ 15:56, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

That reminds me of a signature I use on another website, a twisting of yet another meme, the Anita Bryant orange juice commercials of the 70s, before she got homophobic. Tequila - It's not just for breakfast anymore!. It is a totally nonsensical signature line, but I've used on that website for over a decade. Not done: Hello Muffin Wizard: Despite the second link in your post above presently redirecting to the third within the Royal Malaysian Air Force article's infobox, it may be more accurate to keep the wording in the infobox in place as "Moro attacks on Sabah". If the air force engaged in Sabah only for this specific engagement, it would be incorrect to imply in the infobox that it acted in all of East Malaysia (which would include Sarawak) or Malaysia proper. I recommend discussing the matter on the Royal Malaysian Air Force talk page and obtaining input from other users regarding this matter.
