Requested articles

Hey MusikAnimal, I'm just wondering if you're interested in helping with a script for requested articles, I don't mean to pester you I know you're busy, I just want to find somebody else if you're not interested. Sorry for bringing this up again! Kharkiv07Talk 00:13, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

@Kharkiv07: No worries, sorry I never got back to you! I was just looking over our original conversation – you said there were existing scripts used for the RA project? Could you point me to those? As far as building a new script from scratch, it's unlikely I'll be starting a new project like that for a while. I hate when I start something and don't finish it, and I'm still working on finishing older projects. My next techy thing will probably be a bot of sorts, and if time provides I may be able to make a task to help with RA. The idea I had of having a message saying "250 requested articles on notable subjects" on the homepage of some other WikiProject, like WP:WPMUSIC, might be accomplished by use of categories. We can brainstorm further about that, but I'd say the first thing is to establish a system for marking requests. I very quickly made these notation templates: {{subst:User:MusikAnimal/ra-notable}} {{subst:User:MusikAnimal/ra-possible}} {{subst:User:MusikAnimal/ra-nonnotable}} We can move those to the template space when ready. I'd say let's draft out a set of instructions for Wikiproject members to follow, indicating use of the notation templates.
By the way, I managed to get a hold of Matty. Indeed he's likely retired for good, but he said if he does return he'll be all over Request Articles. Just thought I'd let you know. Best MusikAnimal talk 00:58, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
No problem about the time, I've seen enough of you to know how busy you are, if you're interested in helping me I think we need to:
  1. Provide a form for submitting them so we can make sure we get all the info we need, its in a place where it will be seen, and it's easy to template it,
  2. Use the templates you mentioned,
  3. and, I have no clue how to go about this, automatically forwarding accepted ones to the appropriate WikiProject (is this possible?),
The current section may be a lost cause, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. If you have time I'd need advice/help in making a form for submission and easily getting them to the WikiProjects. Thanks! Kharkiv07Talk 01:15, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
So the form would be for users submitting requested articles? I'm not sure how to go about implementing that. We could have a default-enabled gadget for this wiki so all users would be able to use it, but that seems expensive considering how infrequently it would be used. You may instead consider having a preloaded sectioning, such as what happens when you create an edit warring report. I like the idea of forwarding accepted notable subjects to their corresponding WikiProject. The person who reviewed the entry would need to tag the appropriate WikiProject(s), and a bot could post to the WikiProject talk page. The other option is somehow having requested articles have their own page, which we could add categories for whichever WikiProjects apply. That way we can simply do like we do for AfC, where we use the {{PAGESINCATEGORY}} magic word to indicate how many articles there are. MusikAnimal talk 01:55, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I'm liking all of that, my concern is where to put them. The AfC-like process shows potential, but dealing with all of those pages would be a mess, every-time one got denied we'd have an useless page that would have to go through CSD (and nobody wants more of those), I think the best way to do it is similarly to Wikipedia:Requests for redirects and then just getting them to WikiProjects somehow, but I have no idea how to go about getting them to the projects. I suppose a bot could do it, but I have no experience with bots and how that would work, or anybody who makes bots. Kharkiv07Talk 02:44, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Well like I said I've been wanting to make a bot. Something like this might be a good start for me to work with this MediaWiki Ruby gem I've been fiddling with, as it doesn't sound terribly difficult. We're going to need to consensus though before we start spamming all the WikiProject talk pages. I think the best venue for that discussion would be the WikiProject Council. But I guess first let's get everything in place, and allow me to see if I can make a Ruby app to do this before reaching out for community input. I'll put it on my to-dos. MusikAnimal talk 02:57, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Great, I'll set up a test page and notify you when I've managed that, until then tell me if I can be of any assistance. Thanks much! Kharkiv07Talk 03:04, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Hey Musik, I've made a test page here, anything can be changed but when it comes down to it this is essentially an archiving bot, just sending it to a different page instead of an archive. Thanks! Kharkiv07Talk 21:22, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello from 173.165.128.70

Hello, I edited Simon Cho's page again and wrote an explanation. I know for a fact that Simon Cho was acting under his coach's orders. That claim is not alleged. It's true. He was not responsible for what he did because he was forced to do it and then he was forced to admit what he did. The section discussing it made it sound like Simon was fully responsible and did it of his own accord and free will. This is untrue and to say that he did is defamation. You cannot defame living persons on their wikipedia pages. That is against the guidelines. Also, the section that described what happened with Simon's confession does not say that his coach was banned from USS for abuse. This is very important information and shows that Simon was a victim here. You cannot defame someone who is a victim. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.165.128.70 (talk) 18:08, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Possible conflict of interest

Hello MusikAnimal. I was hoping you could review my comments at Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard#Metcalf_sniper_attack? It may be that my intuition is incorrect, but the recent changes seem vaguely promotional. If you are available would you please review? I have disengaged from the article until receiving community feedback. Regards, Yamaguchi先生 18:16, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Looks like a copyright violation, so I've removed it under that circumstance and warned both users. If anything the restricted symbols should not be there per MOS:TMRULES, but I agree as a whole the content seemed somewhat promotional in tone. MusikAnimal talk 20:26, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Help with tools

Hello, MusikAnimal,
It would appear that you are familiar with a variety of tools offered to do edit analyses on Wikipedia. I've been sent links to different analyses but when I went over to the labs page, I couldn't find any tools that looked like they provided the results that I've seen. Also, a lot of the tools listed in their table did not have links so I guess they are inactive.

What I'm looking for is a tool a) that analyzes the most frequent contributors to an article (I couldn't find this under Page Information) and also b) one that compares two editors to see what articles they have both edited. I know I've seen these analyses but I can't find how to create them.

Any information you could provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 14:48, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

@Liz: Normally xtools articleinfo is what you want for analyzing contributions/contributors to a page, but it is down right now due to labs maintenance (as are many other tools). In the meantime there is WikiChecker, although much less full-featured and a bit flaky. If you get "403 Forbidden" or any other errors, just keep hitting refresh and it will eventually work. For (b) try this editor interaction utility. Best MusikAnimal talk 21:47, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! I was looking at this list which wasn't very helpful. But eventually I came across this directory and this list...they are pretty hidden though, it should be more obvious. I appreciate you taking time to reply. Liz Read! Talk! 22:32, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Thank you! It is likely to stay a target for quite some time, hence the chosen duration. Beiber's Comedy Central Roast is tonight, so we might see many more related articles under fire. MusikAnimal talk 15:20, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I am contacting you let you know that the artist known on the web as "Danni Rouge" is going to changing her name from "Danni Rouge" to "DVNNI" I am attempting to do the edit, but I can see this is more difficult than it is.

Please advice.

history revision statistics

hi,MusikAnimal... technical 13 indicated you may have knowledge of why the history revision statistics link is down,(this link is very important in many articles to keep tabs on how an article is progressing in relation to its contributors) do you know when it will be working again?thank you--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:32, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

@Ozzie10aaaa: Looks like it's finally up and running again. All of the downtime was because of labs maintenance – beyond our control. However, I'm working with Nakon in hopes to get xtools on it's own dedicated instance so we don't have these types of issues moving forward. Admittedly we've been saying this for months, though. It's still unclear how long of a wait we're looking at, but hopefully not too long ;) Best MusikAnimal talk 13:55, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor News #2—2015

Did you know?

With Citoid in VisualEditor, you click the 'book with bookmark' icon and paste in the URL for a reliable source:

Screenshot of Citoid's first dialog

Citoid looks up the source for you and returns the citation results. Click the green "Insert" button to accept its results and add them to the article:

Screenshot of Citoid's initial results

After inserting the citation, you can change it. Select the reference, and click the "Edit" button in the context menu to make changes.

The user guide has more information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's performance, the Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. The worklist for April through June is available in Phabricator.

The weekly task triage meetings continue to be open to volunteers, each Wednesday at 11:00 (noon) PDT (18:00 UTC). You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration as a Q4 blocker. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the Editing team's Q4 blocker project with the bug. Learn how to join the meetings and how to nominate bugs at mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal.

Recent improvements

VisualEditor is now substantially faster. In many cases, opening the page in VisualEditor is now faster than opening it in the wikitext editor. The new system has improved the code speed by 37% and network speed by almost 40%.

The Editing team is slowly adding auto-fill features for citations. This is currently available only at the French, Italian, and English Wikipedias. The Citoid service takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. After creating it, you will be able to change or add information to the citation, in the same way that you edit any other pre-existing citation in VisualEditor. Support for ISBNs, PMIDs, and other identifiers is planned. Later, editors will be able to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections by contributing to the Citoid service's definitions for each website.

Citoid requires good TemplateData for your citation templates. If you would like to request this feature for your wiki, please post a request in the Citoid project on Phabricator. Include links to the TemplateData for the most important citation templates on your wiki.

The special character inserter has been improved, based upon feedback from active users. After this, VisualEditor was made available to all users of Wikipedias on the Phase 5 list on 30 March. This affected 53 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including AfrikaansAzerbaijaniBretonKyrgyzMacedonianMongolianTatar, and Welsh.

Work continues to support languages with complex requirements, such as Korean and Japanese. These languages use input method editors ("IMEs”). Recent improvements to cursoring, backspace, and delete behavior will simplify typing in VisualEditor for these users.

The design for the image selection process is now using a "masonry fit" model. Images in the search results are displayed at the same height but at variable widths, similar to bricks of different sizes in a masonry wall, or the "packed" mode in image galleries. This style helps you find the right image by making it easier to see more details in images.

You can now drag and drop categories to re-arrange their order of appearance on the page.

The pop-up window that appears when you click on a reference, image, link, or other element, is called the "context menu". It now displays additional useful information, such as the destination of the link or the image's filename. The team has also added an explicit "Edit" button in the context menu, which helps new editors open the tool to change the item.

Invisible templates are marked by a puzzle piece icon so they can be interacted with. Users also will be able to see and edit HTML anchors now in section headings.

Users of the TemplateData GUI editor can now set a string as an optional text for the 'deprecated' property in addition to boolean value, which lets you tell users of the template what they should do instead (T90734).

Looking ahead

The special character inserter in VisualEditor will soon use the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki will also have the option of creating a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Instructions for customizing the list will be posted at mediawiki.org.

The team is discussing a test of VisualEditor with new users, to see whether they have met their goals of making VisualEditor suitable for those editors. The timing is unknown, but might be relatively soon.

Copyvios

Thanks for spotting the copyvios at Heritage Education Funds and Jason R. B. Maguire. It makes it so much easier when the spammers do that :-) Squinge (talk) 17:12, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

@Squinge: Indeed. I highly recommend Earwig's copyvio detector. I used it everyday! MusikAnimal talk 17:15, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll have a look at that. I'm also going through the rest of the spammer's stuff, and it looks like everything they've done was copied from elsewhere. Squinge (talk) 17:19, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
@Squinge: My edit summary got cut off, but I wanted to point you to the Wayback Machine by archive.org, which can be used to identify copyright violations in articles that have been around for a while. Wikipedia is often the source of the information, so if the article is older than say a month you may be looking at a backwards copy rather than a copyright violation. Thanks for the lookout, nonetheless! MusikAnimal talk 17:36, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Great, thanks. I did in fact just find one possible copyvio but the Wikipedia article version was older, so something to watch out for for sure. Squinge (talk) 17:37, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

What is your rationale blocking alone Copperchloride in the Edit War at Seeman (director)? Why you haven't blocked the IP in Edit War?61.245.163.48 (talk) 01:45, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

It seems to me Cooperchrioide used the talk page properly, it is only the IP was wrong. To my understanding, he is a senior editor and his edits were right.61.245.163.48 (talk) 01:54, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Please explain why you haven't given enough warning to a senior editor before you block him in a sensitive subject of this nature?61.245.163.48 (talk) 01:56, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Based on the user's talk page and block log they should be familiar with what constitutes edit warring. From what I could tell there is no "right" version between the back and forth edits. Reverting good-faith sourced changes over and over, for days weeks (months?) on end, is not acceptable. The IP user obviously was equally in the wrong for edit warring, but their address is evidently reallocated every day or so, making a block ineffective. I semi-protected the page instead, which would likely have been done anyway given the repeated disruption from other unconfirmed users. With the page semi'd one might consider Copperchloride's block beyond preventive, but weighing it all out I felt it was still justified. They are of course welcome to make an unblock request. Finally, with only two parties, I favour blocking over full-protection simply so that uninvolved editors can continue to edit. Hopefully that clears things up. MusikAnimal talk 02:22, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Problem using STiki

Hello. I was using STiki while reverting some edits. On its GUI, it showed that you edited and added this and not Brea91. My apologies. This is a mistake by STiki, probably because at the time when I was reverting this vandalism content, you reverted before me and then STiki reverted your edit. Hello from 3DPrintFan

Hi, MusickAnimal. Thank you for tracking my edits. I am new at this, so I apologize for my lack of Wiki etiquette. Regarding the Airwolf 3D edits that I made without comment: what I was attempting to accomplish was properly nesting the products under the "products" category. They are currently nested under the "3 AW3D HDL=" and there is an (=) leaking in the text. Additionally, the font style and font size are different on the AW3D HDL product. How do you advise resolving the issue?

@Anuraag Singh: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! I unfortunately don't have the time to review your article at the moment, but you can hit the "Resubmit" button on your draft article to submit it for review again. I believe the biggest concern for your article is whether or not the subject meets our notability guideline. See WP:CORPDEPTH and ensure the organization meets that criteria. Hope this helps! Mark Amory May

I wouldn't have said it was entirely negative, I would have said it was un-notable and promotional, hence the username (Silentmayhemproductions) being the web address linked to at the end of the piece (though I understand that at the end of the day, a deletion's a deletion). Thanks for your swift action, 1Potato2Potato3Potato4 (talk) 15:53, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

You need to turn off his ability to edit his page as he keeps on blanking it. Wgolf (talk) 19:33, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

@Wgolf: None of those are important messages so blanking them is fine. Just means they've seen it and are aware of it. I don't see them refactoring other's comments (making it seem like we said something else) so to go by the book there's no need to disable talk page access at this time, nor is there a need to keep reverting them MusikAnimal talk 19:38, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

When MusikBot leaves a comment on a request, will the comment be noted it was placed by a bot ? as does Legobot or like DQB ? As you can see "Robot" or the like will help distinguish between editor clerks and bots. Mlpearc (open channel) 01:41, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

A poem entitled - Whalestate stats are not quite true

To Musikanimal,

I think my userpage stats are not quite true

I've just noticed, hope you're going to notice too

845 visits in 30 days

makes me feel I'm all the craze

but all these people just are me

and me alone and no others see

those things I wrote about at all

and no body is interested and no one ever takes the time to call,

this makes me think those others don't really exist

which leaves me all of a bother and in some kind of triste

(well sort of) not so sad, but hey, I'd like to know,

if anyone gives a damn and if anyone at all does infact come and go.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/triste

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Whalestate#phone-number (I don't really expect anyone to call, I just added the line to make the poem mostly)

hope you're well in NY city, and life is good and not too difficult, troublesome, i.e..... Thanks ! http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/User:Whalestate Whalestate (talk) 01:24, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

@Whalestate: As eloquent as it may be, I find this poem a bit saddening! First off, I believe (or would hope) the page view stats refer to unique visitors (so not just you). Perhaps not, but either way, having a low page view count is nothing to be ashamed of! Your userpage should not be a measure of your impact on the project. The thing you should be more proud of is Special:Contributions/Whalestate, where I see you've done some excellent work. The vast majority of your edits are in the mainspace. That's something we don't see enough, and it shows you are dedicated to what Wikipedia is first and foremost – an encyclopedia. The community and our interactions with each other are important, but secondary. Maybe instead take a look at the number of page views on the articles you've created or the ones you've made contributions to. See how many people you've affected, how many people have read and valued your hard work. That's what really matters! So keep doing what you do, and worry not about your userpage :) MusikAnimal talk 15:58, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

alleged murder

First, let me say that the alleged murder attempt was a genuine attempt, not a troublemaker attempt to demonstrate something. What I mean is writing the article was a genuine attempt not that I was trying to kill anyone. English is not my first language.

Second, there is another article which is just a dictionary definition. It is Presumptive nominee but could very well be presumed nominee. The word presumptive is merely an adjective. It should have the same fate as alleged murder.

That presumptive article has a lot of fluff to bulk up the length of the article but this should not matter. There are no references about the term presumptive nominee only a few articles that use the word. ...as someone wrote "WP:NEO says "To support... an article about a particular term we must cite reliable secondary sources such as books and papers about the term—not books and papers that use the term."

What do you think? Dharahara (talk) 21:39, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

It was a genuine attempt, but as explained yesterday by multiple editors, this is a duplication of Murder. If you won't listen, you're just going to waste your time editing again. Joseph2302 (talk) 21:43, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
@Dharahara: Indeed, I was not assuming ill-intent here. My justification goes well beyond neologisms. I merely was rubbing my magic wiki ball and could foresee a not-so-fun experience ahead for both you and others involved. Writing about any contentious subject about living persons is going to a bumpy road, but allegations of murder has got to be one of the foremost questionable things to mention on Wikipedia – given it's powerful web presence and the audience that might find it. Oftentimes we simply omit information like this, even if true and supported by multiple independent sources, simply because there are actual legal concerns involved and it's not worth the risk and editorial disruption that goes with it. Naturally, having an article dedicated to this topic sounds like a bad idea. One can imagine the vandals, white-washers, POV-pushers, etc, that would constantly haunt the article. This is purely theoretical, though. Your article could turn out to be scot-free of disruption and well received by its readers. I just very much don't think it will. So, I would say move on to the many more exciting topics to write about. I would normally point you to our articles for creation process, where you could create a draft article and have it reviewed before being published to the mainspace. However here again I don't think an article about murder allegations will be worth your while. I mean that in full sincerity and with no disrespect toward your good-faith attempt at an article. All the best MusikAnimal talk 23:21, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Vandal might need a block

Your recent warning to this IP showed up on my watchlist. I've issued the last two blocks, which were one month and six months. Since the pattern indicates this is a vandalism-only account, it may now be time for a one-year block. Since it is boring when one admin does all the blocks, what would you think of issuing such a block yourself? If you believe there is a chance of reform, of course you wouldn't do this. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 17:42, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

@EdJohnston: Done. With school IPs I think it's acceptable to go by the history of disruption rather than recent activity. Exceeding a level four warning may not happen when the editing is this infrequent, but we can't just let it slide when there's been nothing but bad edits. However I wouldn't consider it a vandalism-only account, which are blocked indefinitely. Best MusikAnimal talk 18:07, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into this. When I see one admin doing all the blocks of somebody, it does make me nervous. Now there is a bit of diversity. EdJohnston (talk) 18:18, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
No problem. I wouldn't hesitate to block again, so long as you feel confident. I've controlled the block log of many an IP, I think not because I'm too harsh, but rather others aren't getting to it! We need more help at AIV during peak hours. Some of our big boys like HJ Mitchell and Ronhjones have left me overwhelmed as of late! :) MusikAnimal talk 18:42, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

Twinkle Block

I think your twinkle block script is borked. It doesn't actually work anymore (for me), and it breaks the block warning interface when just trying to add the template via twinkle. When I removed your script, the warning worked again in Twinkle (but of course, your twinkle block script no longer worked). Ping me when you are around and I can discuss further. --kelapstick(bainuu) 13:37, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

@Kelapstick: The block warning interface was intentionally moved to the block module, so as to remove duplication. I would like to find out why the script didn't work at all, though! I'll be on IRC all day, let's talk there. Thanks MusikAnimal talk 14:29, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Support request with team editing experiment project

Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! (which I hope it will be very bright, with colors, and Wikipedia everywhere) Regards from User:Micru on meta.

P.J. Kurien and Suryanelli Rape Case

As anybody can see (google), there are strong accusation against P.J. Kurien in Suryanelli case. And it is wellknown. But some single purpose accounts systematically try to remove anything related from corresponding pages. I strongly recommend to protect the page Suryanelli rape case also. I raised the issue on ANB, but didn't grip. We at ml.wp also facing same problem there. :-)--Praveen:talk 15:58, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
