Help in the lede of Slavery in the Spanish New World colonies
Megalibrarygirl, could you give a hand on this article's lede? Taking it on strides. I already made a request for help in the talk page. Thanks. Caballero/Historiador ⎌ 23:02, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
- Caballero1967, sorry I missed this. I'll take a look. I'm not great at ledes though, but I'll do my best! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 22:06, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- I don't believe you . Your help is always welcome. Caballero/Historiador ⎌ 22:11, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- Caballero1967, I made a few small copyedits and I know you saw the edit with the reference. My friend, SusunW was the person who found that reference which we used when we were improving the article Women in the Americas. She knows a lot about the encomienda system and other issues relating to Spanish speaking countries. I hope the edit I made helps address the concern that was on the talk page which seemed concerned about the fact that indigenous people weren't enslaved in the same way as African people. Anyway, anytime you need anything, just holler. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:45, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks! Good copy editing catches. I was going to dedicate a section to la encomienda but I guess it is good to mention it in the lede too. Was the point about the pro-Indian laws clear and strong enough? Thanks again. Caballero/Historiador ⎌ 00:31, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
- I read the conversation on the talk page and am a bit puzzled by it. No, the enslavement was not the same, but it was complicated, as Caballero1967 pointed out. In exchange for providing the native populations with religion (which many did not want), schooling (which often was religious only) and allowing them to work small portions of an estate to provide for their own needs (which previously had been their own ancestral lands to begin with and work as they wanted), they were required to work for the encomendero/encomendera. Yes, Spain enacted laws limiting what could and could not be done to the indios. But the crown was not in the colonies to enforce the implementation of those laws, and conquistidors ingnored them.[1] When the ecomienda system was abolished, in Mexico, it just morphed into the hacienda system [[2]], keeping indios enslaved and bound by forced labor which was not abolished until the 20th century. [3] I somehow don't think those afflicted by bondage under these systems found them humane, equal citizenship, or fair--certainly not the poignant letters of the Korean Mexicans I read who were indentured to Yucatán's haciendas. Saba lace
I am working on an article for Saba lace. I found an image that I think has the appropriate license, but you know me an photos and how unsure I am about them. [4] Is this useable and if so, how do I upload it? Thanks! SusunW (talk) 21:27, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- Here's what I know about the image, SusunW. Since it's published with the right license on Flickr, it's OK to upload. What I always wonder about is whether images of art are differently copyrighted than the art itself. So far, however, I haven't had any images of art that were licensed on Flickr correctly deleted. The only time I've had an image that was licensed properly deleted from Wikimedia is when the Flickr user had redistributed someone else's pictures. I didn't get in trouble for it, so I guess it was considered a "good faith" mistake. :) I'd go ahead and upload it. If you want, I'll do it for you. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 22:09, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- I hate to be helpless, but I have no idea how to upload an image from Flickr. I usually just clip images to my desktop, save them and then upload them. Is that how one deals with a Flickr image as well, or is there some tool one must use? Of course, :D if you'd rather load it, I would very very much appreciate it. SusunW (talk) 22:19, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

- Oh, no, SusunW, I'd leave them at home and hope they don't throw a house party. LOL (Just kidding. They're not old enough for that yet.) :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 01:58, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

- That nomination is about as patriarchal as one can imagine. It made me sick to my stomach before I even finished my first cup of coffee. I maybe overdid my answer, but seriously? Seriously? The patriarchy is alive and well. SusunW (talk) 15:54, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the head's up, Ipigott and for your awesome research, SusunW. Strong indication of bias in nomination for AfD. :( Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:16, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, thanks Ian. this was one of the first articles that came up when I googled her. He was totally unremarkable until he married her. They married in 1964, his company took off in 1967. Who fueled who? On a more positive note, I discovered that Lotfia ElNadi has an article (though the complete thing was a copyvio 98% directly copied). I found sources and fixed it. I am not sure about the naming of her article either. See my comments on the talk page? SusunW (talk) 17:42, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

Regarding your requested deletion of Elena Taube Bailey
You don't provide any legitimate reasons for deletion. There are plenty of articles on Google, in newspapers and magazines about this subject and her notable work. How is it that Tiffany Trump, who hasn't provided any notable work, is on Wiki but this individual is requested to be deleted? Can you recommend how to improve this subject's article rather than just say "delete"?Dove.Leesa (talk) 23:53, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- I didn't find any reliable sources, Dove.Leesa. I almost always lean towards "Keep" which you can see in my history. I want to keep articles rather than delete. She may be WP:TOOSOON. If you have any other sources about her, from maybe the New York Times or some other RS, I'm happy to change my !vote. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:29, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Please see some sources that I found: "Washingtonian" (the equivalent of Vogue or Vanity Fair that many other people are mentioned in) https://www.washingtonian.com/2015/01/16/real-wedding-elena-taube-paul-bailey/ "New York University" - author http://politics.as.nyu.edu/docs/IO/11098/jpi5.pdf http://politics.as.nyu.edu/object/ma_journal_issue2.html "East Bay Times" (reputable newspaper in CA) http://www.eastbaytimes.com/2010/04/09/neither-nazis-nor-soviets-could-quell-survivors-faith/ "Jews for Jesus" (organization) https://jewsforjesus.org/issues-v18-n09/hide-and-seek-the-story-of-holocaust-survivor-maria-weinstein "Wikipedia" (Rudy Giuliani Campaign) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Giuliani_presidential_campaign,_2008 Rudy Giuliani's blog (public figure) http://giulianiblog.blogspot.com/ There's more. Notability is that this individual was the key for the Washington National Cathedral now allowing interfaith (Jewish-Christian) wedding ceremonies and was the first person/woman to be married in a Christian-Jewish ceremony at the cathedral in U.S. History ("the great church for national purposes," according to Major L'Enfant, whom President Washington commissioned to build the cathedral). Her roll in the federal government, and being the only person/woman in the U.S. federal government history to have worked at both the Ukrainian and Israeli consulates before joining the US federal gov. is hugely significant.Dove.Leesa (talk) 01:04, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
- OK, Thank you, Dove.Leesa. I'll run through the sources for you. The WP:GNG standard specifies that the subject must be the non-trivial subject of multiple Reliable sources. The Washingtonian does cover her in a non-trivial way. That's one source, but most of the AfD participants often consider wedding articles to "not count" as reliable sources (I often disagree, depending on context). The sources where she is the author can't be used to establish notability. The East Bay times article only mentions her briefly, so we can't use that. It's basically a name-check. Jews for Jesus is also a name-check. You also can't use Wikipedia articles as sources for references and the Guilani blog isn't going to cut it, either, unfortunately. I can look at your other sources, though. I agree that she has obviously done some significant work in the govt, but sometimes it's hard to source these things for Wikipedia's standards unless she's been written up in the news more. BTW, I may be going offline for the night after 7 or so, so if you don't hear from me, don't panic. You may also want to reach out to Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity and Wikipedia:WikiProject Judaism and post on their talk pages for help. Maybe they'll dig up something we have both missed.
