Indic script

Information icon - Please do not add any Indic script, to any of our India related articles, as you did at Chandigarh, and several other articles, as this contravenes WP:NOINDICSCRIPT - Thank you - Arjayay (talk) 21:14, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

I was not aware of this. Does this policy apply to Punjabi and Sikhism-related articles? I will avoid using them on India-related articles. ThethPunjabi (talk) 21:21, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
In short, yes any of our India related articles - please read WP:NOINDICSCRIPT for the very few exceptions - articles about the specific languages being used, etc. Did it not seem strange that there were no Indic scripts used in any of the articles that you edited? - Best wishes - Arjayay (talk) 21:25, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Articles about Indian religions seem to be be excluded in this policy, which means articles under Sikhism would not be covered under this policy consensus. I will avoid adding Indic scripts to geographical locations going forward then.
"This avoidance of Indic scripts only applies to articles that are predominantly India-related and is excluded from, among others, articles about Hinduism, Buddhism, or any of India's neighbouring countries." ThethPunjabi (talk) 21:27, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Pakistan Sikh Council has been reverted.
Your edit here to Pakistan Sikh Council was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (https://www.facebook.com/pakistansikhcouncil/) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 23:10, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Dhaliwal (surname), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Punjabi. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Indic script

Per the Manual of Style page on India-related articles, avoid the use of Indic scripts in the lead sections or infoboxes. Instead, use International Phonetic Alphabet pronunciation guides, which are more international. Exceptions are articles on the script itself, articles on a language that uses the script, and articles on texts originally written in a particular script. This does not apply to articles that are not predominantly within the scope of WikiProject India.

Consensus and common practice among WikiProject Pakistan editors is that the lead sentence of an article may contain Urdu or other transliterations in regional script(s) such as Shahmukhi, Perso-Arabic, Naskh etc., where applicable or relevant. IPA may be used additionally to aid pronunciation. Articles under the scope of WikiProject Pakistan are not covered under WP:INDICSCRIPT. Note that this consensus only applies to Pakistan-related articles. The use of Urdu and other non-Indic scripts on articles outside the scope of Pakistan-related articles, such as India-related articles, may be subsumed under WP:INDICSCRIPT.

Hello Packer&Tracker, thank you for your post. I am new to Wikipedia so in the beginning I was unaware of the policy consensus regarding Indic scripts on articles that fall under the scope of WikiProject India (pardon me, there is a lot to learn and go-through). Since then, I was kindly informed by user Arajayay about [[WP:NOINDICSCRIPT]]. Since then, I have been careful to only include them on articles that would fall under the exceptions to the above policy consensus, those namely being:
  1. Articles relating to Indian religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism). Based on quote: "This avoidance of Indic scripts only applies to articles that are predominantly India-related and is excluded from, among others, articles about Hinduism, Buddhism, or any of India's neighbouring countries."
  2. Articles specifically covering Indic languages and scripts.
  3. Articles on literature originally written in the particular Indic language/script. Last two exceptions based on quote: "Exceptions are articles on the script itself, articles on a language that uses the script, and articles on texts originally written in a particular script."
Therefore, I do not contribute Indic script to any other articles that do not fall under the exceptions above, as stated in the policy consensus. I appreciate you letting me know about this. If I potentially make any other mistakes or transgressions in the future that may violate any Wikipedia policy consensuses or rules, please feel free to alert me about it so it can be a learning experience for me and I will refrain from doing so in my activities on Wikipedia hereafter.
Kind regards,

Control copyright icon Hello ThethPunjabi! Your additions to Sikh music have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 23:50, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello Diannaa, thank you for your post. For my contributions on the Sikh music article, I did not source from https://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Ghar but rather I used the page https://www.gurbani.org/articles/webart231.php written by T. Singh (which I cited in the article). I refrain from using SikhiWiki as a source to avoid potential copyright infringement. For the subsection dealing with Taal, I did take from the main Wiki article covering that topic, I will remember to reference within Wikipedia in the future, but I did leave a Main Article template at the beginning of the subsection.
Kind regards, ThethPunjabi (talk) 05:25, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
Hello. That page is also marked as copyright: "© 1993 - 2022 · gurbani.org - Reflections On Gurbani". The terms of use page says "don’t cut/copy the material from this website and paste it on any other websites". It's not unusual to find the same prose at multiple places online. — Diannaa (talk) 11:34, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Discretionary sanctions notification

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

To opt out of receiving messages like this one, place {{Ds/aware}} on your user talk page and specify in the template the topic areas that you would like to opt out of alerts about. For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Please stop

User-generated content

I have just glanced through your edits of the 23rd and 24th of September, i.e. edit of your latest two days. And they have introduced a large number of unreliable WP:UGC in many articles, e.g. all of your following edits are examples of that:

So please stop right away and familiarise yourself with reliable sources for History – see WP:HISTRS – and please do not add/cite user-generated content in any article. If you want to add history/religion-related details, then please cite scholarly sources from historians. Any further continuation of this behaviour may get you WP:TBAN from India/Pakistan-related articles, as this area comes under discretionary sanctions – see the above section.

Copyrighted uploads

You have also uploaded a large number of files from the internet, many of which are WP:COPYVIOs, e.g. all of your following files are copyright violations, as their sources are copyrighted.

So please stop such uploads as well. - NitinMlk (talk) 21:09, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

i have posted a comment there. - NitinMlk (talk) 21:25, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
I've likewise commented. Some of these *may* be valid for fair-use (File:Labh_Singh.jpg and File:Manbir Singh Chaheru.jpg in particular), but asking at Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions would be a great path forward. ThethPunjabi, copyright can be complicated to deal with, but it's something that the various Wikipedia projects take very seriously. That's especially true at Commons, where only freely licensed images are allowed. The English wikipedia does allow WP:FAIRUSE images in very limited circumstances, but you need to carefully read and follow the non-free content/images guidelines (especially read the unacceptable use section!). Please, ask others if you aren't sure about what you can and cannot use. Yes, it does mean that sometimes you can't use the perfect image for an article. Wikipedia tries to be a good netizen and support how others what their images to be used, even when it causes us problems. So when the provenance of an image isn't sure, it's best not to use it here. Warning icon Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add unsourced or poorly sourced content, as you did at Himmat Singh (Sikhism), you may be blocked from editing. Drmies (talk) 21:13, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

How is adding content from the Sikh Encyclopedia (a site which sources from scholarly sources, look at the bottom of any page) or another Encyclopedia website disruptive content? You all did not even warn me once before blocking my account. Adios, I’m leaving Wikipedia if this is how new users are treated, being banned without even being warned about the hundred billion of rules you all have set up here. ThethPunjabi (talk) 22:13, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

That particular WP:UGC is in violation of WP:COPYVIOEL, as it is directly copy-pasting copyrighted content from scholarly books. So please do not cite that one or any other user-generated content in WP articles. - NitinMlk (talk) 22:24, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
To give you an example, compare the entry of PAÑJ PIĀRE on page nos. 282–284 of this book with the relevant entry at the website in question. That entry is directly copy-pasted from the book. And that site is full of such copyright violations. The other links like this one are also unreliable. - NitinMlk (talk) 22:39, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
You're not "new"--you've made over 1,000 edits. That's enough for us to expect you will adhere to our policies regarding sourcing, and user-generated content is just never OK. That Sikh encyclopedia, that's what that is--user-generated. Drmies (talk) 00:39, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
From your talk page: "I have left Wikipedia PERMANENTLY due to power-tripping users on here who ban others (without any prior warnings) because they make edits that they do not like under false premises. Adios!" Note: you are not banned, and you were warned, a half a dozen times or more. We do not have a hundred billion rules, last time I checked. You were warned specifically for copyright violations and for using unreliable sources. The first is a matter of the law, the second is a fundamental policy of an encyclopedia. It's fine if you don't like the law or that rule, of course, and we respect that for you and your personal life, but we can't have that happening on this website. Replaceable fair use File:Smadh of Prithi Chand.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Smadh of Prithi Chand.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 22:05, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Photos on Sikh wiki articles

I noticed that you have been adding various contemporary painting and portraits for alot of Sikh wiki articles.Where do you get most of these photos and paintings from? Tarunveer Singh Aujla (talk) 21:01, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

I have to dig around for most of them. Looking through old books, archival websites, defunct websites, social media sites from amateur and professional Sikh historians, art auction sites, academic papers, that sort of thing. It can take a while to find depictions for some personalities. I always make sure to look into the history of each individual photo to make sure I am not mistaking who is portrayed (reverse image searches help in this regard). Let me know if you need any help finding anything! ThethPunjabi (talk) 21:24, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Joginder Singh Vedanti

As part of creating articles of jathedars of the Akal Takht, I created an article for former Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti. Unfortunately, it is being considered to be deleted because a user alleged that there is a WP:UPE or WP:COI conflict. Can User talk:CanadianSingh1469 and you review and submit the article from the draftspace if it gets deleted. 1forever&ever (talk) 23:47, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

Hey, User talk:1forever&ever! I would be glad to assist you. Do you know why they are accusing you of having a conflict of interest in-regards to the article subject? I noticed you have been working on the articles related to the jathedars of the Akal Takht, what grounds do they have to accuse you of being a paid editor or related to the subject? Genuinely curious about how they came to that conclusion and how that investigative process works. I can review and submit the article from draftspace, provided that doing so would not violate any Wikipedia rules or guidelines (I joined Wikipedia back in August of this year, so I am not entirely familiar with all the convoluted rules and procedures as of yet, so I want to be careful about not breaking any rules or such unknowingly). If there are any details in the article not backed up by the cited sources, I would have to remove them before doing so. ThethPunjabi (talk) 01:39, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
@ThethPunjabi, I don't know why I am being accused of a conflict of interest. I am not paid nor related to the deceased Joginder Singh Vedanti. Definitely, review the article and make changes if needed. Thanks 1forever&ever (talk) 02:31, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
If this article is deleted through AFD, moving the draft to main space would just result in it being tagged for speedy deletion CSD G4. It needs to go through AFC to overcome an AFD deletion decision. Liz Read! Talk! 07:24, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

Baba Gurbaksh Singh

Hey there!I'm currently creating a wikipedia page on Baba Gurbaksh Singh Shahid a prominant Sikh warrior from the 18th century who died fighting against Ahmed Shah Durrani's forces at Amritsar.Since you have uploaded various contemporary paintings and fresco's of various Sikh figures,do you have an image of Gurbaksh Singh that i can use? Tarunveer Singh Aujla (talk) 21:50, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Hey Tarunveer! Yes, I do have some images for you of Baba Gurbaksh Singh Shahid. Both are 19th century fresco depictions of him from Gurdwara Baba Atal in Amritsar.
Fresco 1: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fresco_of_Baba_Gurbaksh_Singh_Shaheed_from_Gurdwara_Baba_Atal_in_Amritsar.jpg

Also, I found this post on Facebook of a painting depicting a historical figure named 'Gurbaksh Singh' (founder of Kalsia State) but I am not sure if this is the same Gurbaksh Singh and I do not know when the painting was made (be careful of copyright violations). Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Old photo of Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan.webp

Thank you for uploading File:Old photo of Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan.webp. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

Wadda Ghallughara

Hey there hope your doing well! One thing I need to tell you is that the image used for the wadda ghallughara and battle of kup wiki pages is actually a depiction of the chotta ghallughara(1746).The painting of the chota ghallughara was painted by M.Gurdit singh in 1966 and the painting is also present in the central sikh museum in amritsar.I tried to upload the correct painting for the wadda ghallughara by Kirpal Singh before, but it got deleted due to it being a copy right violation. Tarunveer Singh Aujla (talk) 00:55, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello Tarunveer! Thank you very much for this information. May I ask where you found out this information from? Any resource you're using would be very useful for me as well in-regards to my Sikh art searches. I believe the paintings you mentioned would be still under copyright and thus be ineligible for being uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (India's copyright law lasts for 60 years after the death of an author, therefore the work is under copyright for 60 years after the deaths of M. Gurdit Singh and Kirpal Singh. Do you know how to upload a file for non-free usage on Wikipedia? Check the sidebar on Wikipedia, under the Contribute section there should be an option called 'Upload file', click on it and then make sure you click the option for non-free usage, make sure you justify why it is eligible for non-free usage on Wikipedia. Perhaps you may be able to upload it through that because they allow you to upload copyrighted works under fair usage as long as it meets the criteria for doing so. I remember the Central Sikh Museum being a website that uploaded a lot of artwork related to Sikhism on their webpage (located at www.CentralSikhMuseum.com), but it seems the website has been defunct for some years now. The last archival screenshot of the defunct website I can find is one dated to December 2014: https://web.archive.org/web/20141216221348/http://centralsikhmuseum.com/ ThethPunjabi (talk) 08:32, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
@Sorry for the late reply.I got this information from a book called "Central Sikh museum" which includes an album of various paintings of historical events in Sikh history.According to the album,Gurdit singh painted a depiction of the chotta ghallughara which is found in the album and there is another painting by Kirpal singh that has a painting of the wadda ghallughara which is this.Unfortunately their dosen't appear to be any online/archived version of the album that i am aware of. "Seva" Insufficient Context tag

Hey - thanks for your thanks ref the contributions to the Seva article (Sevā). I left a message on the article talk page regarding the insufficient context tag but there isn't much activity - I was wondering if you would be interested in taking a look? I feel the tag can be removed but if not, would you be interested in working together to provide additional context?

Thanks!

Starlights99 (talk) 15:55, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

@Starlights99 Hey! No problem. I made some minor edits to the article to improve the comprehension of it by unfamiliar readers. I believe the tag can go ahead and be removed now that we have both provided further context/definitions of the Indic terminology and concepts within it. Thanks for reaching out and feel free to ask me again for any help if you need it. ThethPunjabi (talk) 02:59, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
Hey,
Thanks for the response! I've gone ahead and removed the tag. I think the article has enough examples to highlight the principles of seva and examples in daily life as well. Thanks for your input :)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Akal Takht after Operation Blue Star (1984).jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Akal Takht after Operation Blue Star (1984).jpg.

Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

I need help

Hello. I need some help with the Battle of Rohilla article. An editor seems convinced that there are no sources for the Battle other than the Bhatt Vahis. He claims other sources are hearsay and doubts the Bhatt Vahis which seems unnecessary for this page. Can you help me find some sources or a possible rebuttal to his arguments. CanadianSingh1469 (talk) 07:16, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Hey I fixed the conflict so no worries. CanadianSingh1469 (talk) 20:14, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

@CanadianSingh1469 Hey! I'm glad you were able to fix the conflict. I did see your message earlier but it was late and I went to bed with the thought of assisting you when I woke-up. ThethPunjabi (talk) 23:43, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
