San Francisco Bay Area Combined Statistical Area
[edit]The San Jose MSA is inside the 11-county San Francisco Bay Area Combined Statistical Area but it is not fully inside the 9-county San Francisco Bay Area. The latter designation is a popularly defined one, not defined by the federal government. The San Jose MSA includes San Benito County but the San Francisco Bay Area does not. Dallas lead paragraph
[edit]Hi Loodog, it's been a while since we talked. I wonder if you could check out the Dallas article. The lead was recently updated. I think the recent revisions reflect the MSA more than the city and should be in the DFW metroplex article. Maybe I'm wrong, not sure. Coud you review please? Much appreciated and thanks, Postoak (talk) 19:26, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- No question, that lead was written for the metroplex, not the city itself.--Louiedog (talk) 20:50, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Religion fields in infoboxes
[edit]Yes, you can stop adhering to Judaism as your religion. The religion field in the infobox does not refer to Jewish ethnicity or descent, only to professed religious belief. It must be accurate for living people. See WP:BLPCAT. Don't do that again or anywhere else. Yworo (talk) 18:29, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

NNDB
[edit]NNDB is not considered a reliable source. See for example Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_26#NNDB. Also, if the source cited does not include the word "Ashkenazi", you cannot assert it based on synthesis or assumption. Yworo (talk) 21:16, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
I mean, there's no source for Einstein being an Askhenazi Jew, yet he is. In general, being of European ancestry and being Jewish is sufficient for being Ashkenazi. There aren't any other variants.--Louiedog (talk) 21:23, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- Einstein is dead. The rules are different for living people. Yworo (talk) 22:28, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Warning over violations of BLP policy
[edit]Please do not add unreferenced or poorly referenced information, especially if controversial, to articles or any other page on Wikipedia about living persons, as you did to Ram Dass. Thank you. Yworo (talk) 22:30, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- This is unnecessary. I'm happy to work with you on this, but we've already been discussing. I haven't made any "poorly sourced" changes since you raised objection and surely you and I are past the point of warning templates.--Louiedog (talk) 22:56, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- I also thought it unnecessary until you put Jewish in the religion field based on a source which only establishes being a secular Jew. For the religion field, they must identify it as their professed religion. This individual has made a well-known choice to follow a different religion than Judaism. I appreciate you getting involved in this, however at the end of *all* that discussion, it still wound up being a sentence that I would add, and would be completely reverted by the other editor involved.
If I can state the issue as neutrally as possible:
- I believe that "black mecca" is a fundamental characteristic of the city, without which we are not really describing that basic facts about what makes Atlanta, Atlanta
- the other editor believes it is inappropriate to make reference to any one racial group in the intro, as this is unfair to other ethnic groups and inappropriate (i.e. race simply should not be mentioned).
I would like to invite you and the other editors involved in the discussion to get involved in the actual content editing since we are getting nowhere with just me and the other editor flip flopping on this. Meanwhile the article is really suffering. Keizers (talk) 17:13, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Pie chart
[edit]Hey, I just noticed your pie chart for the MBTA services. I really like it, though I've got a few comments.
First, any free use files (like your chart) should probably be uploaded at Wikimedia Commons rather than on Wikipedia itself. This allows other-language Wikipedias to use files (at the moment, there are articles on the MBTA in 14 languages) and for all free-use files to be found in the same place. (Fair use images must stay on individual wikis.) Unless you object, I can transfer your file to Commons so it can be used by anyone.
If you don't have an account on Commons, it's real easy to get one. Just visit [Special:Merge Accounts]] and it'll automatically let you log into Commons and some other Wikimedia projects with your same Wikipedia login.
Second, I'd like to see the graph in SVG (scalable vector graphics) format. It'd provide several advantages - lines are clearer, the thin sections would be easier to see, and it could be scaled to any size. If you're interested in learning, I'd recommend Inkscape as it's free and reasonably intuitive. You could import your graph directly from Excel (by saving as a PDF and importing the PDF into Inkscape) or simply draw a new graph. If you don't want to take the time to learn a new program, let me know and I'll draw one up.
Please don't take this as criticism - I applaud the graph you drew up. I'm just one of those crazy people who's anal-retentive about everything being SVGs.
Feel free to respond here; I've watchlisted your talk page.
Cheers! Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:07, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Fox Point Providence map incorrect
[edit]The map in this location http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Provneigh-foxpt.JPG created by you is incorrect. 195 does not cut through the neighborhood quite that way anymore.
Also, if you are a resident of Providence or know about the history can of the moving of 195 can you also write about that. The article still mentions a plan to create a walkway that goes across 195 while when I went last summer it was already there.

Question about your maps
[edit]Hello, I recently came across one of your maps a short while ago (File:Economic map of metropolitan Detroit.jpg) and noticed that you state to be the creator of the map, and presumably the website you linked to. However, on the contact page of the website, it states: "All maps, text, and images are released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share-Alike License 3.0 — you are free to use, quote, or manipulate anything you want, as long as you give attribution, do not use the material for commercial purposes..." If this was indeed the intended license for these maps, I wanted to point out that these images are eligible for speedy deletion under F3. Per WP:ICTIC, free licenses must not prevent commercial reuse or derivative works. If you are the creator of these maps and would like to continue their use here, you will have to allow commercial use of your works. If not, I'm afraid I'll have to delete them under the aforementioned speedy criterion. — ξxplicit 01:45, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Your question on Jews and religious identity
[edit]I understand what you are getting at. However, despite the stuff some like to say about Jews being an ethnic group, the one striking point that all Jews agree on, is that Judaism is a distinct religion. That is what is meant by that statement. Whether Jews actually follow it, or believe it, or even believe in G-d, is completely different. You are reading "religious" as observant. A Jew is a person that is a member of the Jewish religion (at least according to one definition or another). Sposer (talk) 17:20, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Providencecityhall.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Providencecityhall.jpg, which you've attributed to user ctman987 on Skyscraperpage.com. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 21:17, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, Loodog. Thank you for editing the file description page for File:Providencecityhall.jpg to provide further evidence about the creator of this photo. However, we are still missing evidence of permission, that is, evidence that the creator has agreed to release this photograph under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License as is claimed on the file description page.
- In order to provide this evidence, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. Please see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for more information.
- If you need help or have any questions, please let me know. —Bkell (talk) 03:26, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

I noticed your edit to the Static friction section of the friction article was explained as such:
- "(we did a lab and got nice data)"

[edit]Hi Loodog! As a Steward I'm involved in the upcoming unification of all accounts organized by the Wikimedia Foundation (see m:Single User Login finalisation announcement). By looking at your account, I realized that you don't have a global account yet. Hello from the team at Featured article review!
[edit]We are preparing to take a closer look at Featured articles promoted in 2004–2010 that may need a review. We started with a script-compiled list of older FAs that have not had a recent formal review. The next step is to prune the list by removing articles that are still actively maintained, up-to-date, and believed to meet current standards. We know that many of you personally maintain articles that you nominated, so we'd appreciate your help in winnowing the list where appropriate.
Please take a look at the sandbox list, check over the FAs listed by your name, and indicate on the sandbox talk page your assessment of their current status. Likewise, if you have taken on the maintenance of any listed FAs that were originally nominated by a departed editor, please indicate their status. BLPs should be given especially careful consideration.
Thanks for your help! Maralia (talk) 19:18, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Lechmereviaduct.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Lechmereviaduct.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – czar 17:33, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- You said the image has permission from the original author, but that permission isn't documented for verification. Please send the permission to the permissions email address mentioned and keep us updated? – czar 17:34, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

File copyright problem with File:Gene stanley.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Gene stanley.jpg. However, it is currently missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation.
ATTENTION: This is an automated, bot-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 03:00, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
Replaceable fair use File:Gene stanley.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Gene stanley.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nihlus 20:02, 28 October 2017 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest
[edit]US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

The article List of tourist attractions in Charlotte, North Carolina has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Policies violated by this page:
WP:NOTDIRECTORY "Simple listings without contextual information showing encyclopedic merit."
WP:NOTGUIDE Wikipedia is not a travel guide. We have Wikitravel for that, and many of these pages could be recreated (or already are) there.
The core content policies are: 1) neutral point of view, 2) no original research and 3) verifiability. This page violages policies 2 and 3.
WP:VERIFY What are the criteria to meet to be in the list? This page has vague or no criteria. By definition, then, there is no way to verify the inclusion or exclusion of any particular site in the list.
WP:NOR Original research "includes any analysis or synthesis of published material that serves to reach or imply a conclusion not stated by the sources. To demonstrate that you are not adding original research, you must be able to cite reliable, published sources that are directly related to the topic of the article, and directly support the material being presented." Who says that each of the items in the list are tourist attractions? Given the lack of inclusion criteria, that's understandable, as there is no need to justify being in a list that doesn't have standards for inclusion. However, that also points to original research as being the source for inclusion.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Off-Topic addition to Life of Brian
[edit]Hi - I saw your recent edits to Monty Python's Life of Brian. Whilst this brief history of sixties/seventies Palenstinian political factions is interesting and appears informative, it seems too far off-topic and doesn't really belong in this article about a comedy film. There is already suitable reference to them in the next paragraph where Michael Palin mentions "modern resistance groups, all with obscure acronyms which they can never remember". DarylKayes (talk) 09:10, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm not sure I follow you there, since this is directly mentioning the actual referents of the movie's satire. To me, ot seems about as on-topic as the more generic Palin quote about "various groups", but maybe your point is that the level of detail is excessive to the subject?
