Is this ok to write history of a place/city without giving varifiable reference
Is this ok to write history of a place/city without giving varifiable reference? I know that it is not possible to varify 100% but atleast a major portion of the section should be varifyable, then only an article should be given B-class or higher rating. I have some data for history of Kulpahar but want to give some varifiable references to it before actually putting it on the article page. Previously I added comprehensive history on Mahoba article page majority of the contents of both these pages are added by me that is why I do not wish to assess these pages myself as I could give ratings in favour of my edits. I want to add some references to these pages then only I wanna get them assessed, but if only writing comprehensive information suffice then possibly Mahoba article could be reassessed. May be the above mentioned articles fit to be classified as C-class articles. --Rohit Saxena (talk) 22:25, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Mangalore's History CE
Hi. I took a look at it, and have removed some linking that I felt was unnecessary. India and Portugal was used earlier in the text, and these are words widely known in the English language so they're not necessary anyway. I've done this to a couple of other links too, such as fishing, boating etc. Everyone knows what they are, and linking doesn't add anything to help the reader understand the text. Finally, I unlinked 11 March 1784. MOSNUM, rules for the raw formatting, whether they’re autoformatted or not), and MOSLINK and CONTEXT now allow this, and then we see what all of our non-logged-in readers see, which is just as well since there are lots of inconsistent dates and glitches concealed from us by the auto system. People seem to be pleased about the reduction in the sea of blue and underlining, and it allows your so-called "high-value" links to stand out. I'll take a deeper look very soon, like some other PRV volunteers, I do it like this. Regards, Matthewedwards (talk • contribs • email) 15:10, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
- Done, though I tagged two statements, one with "{{vague}}", and another with "{{fact}}". I just don't have the knowledge in the subject to fix them. Matthewedwards (talk • contribs • email) 22:39, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Mumbai
Copyediting should be done at the final stage rather than during the development. Since this is a history topic, portions would need to be summarized as history articles to tend to take an exponential curve (more sample time point nearer to today than at the start). I'll try and work that out once you are done with the development. Meanwhile, I'll upload an SVG map of the 7 islands, and try and source some pics. I'll also list some thoughts on the article talk page. Stuff such as missing content, extraneous content and so on. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 20:25, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

- Actually, its for all articles. It's a good practice, and many RFA candidates are opposed if they lack edit summaries. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:26, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Www.kamat.com 13034.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Www.kamat.com 13034.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:11, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
Speedy deletion of Image:Www.kamat.com 13034.jpg
A tag has been placed on Image:Www.kamat.com 13034.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image which is not under a free license or in the public domain and it has not been used in any article for more than seven days.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Www.kamat.com 13034.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. - But Ken there is only so much we can condense the prose further to. I feel now it is pretty well written. Regarding the panoramic image, I can only show what is in the panorama, that is how much of Mangalore looks. Why did you feel it should be removed?--PremKudvaTalk 04:03, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Notability of Joachim Alva
A tag has been placed on Joachim Alva requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. TexMurphy (talk) 12:35, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

- Yes, but we need to cross check at the same time. A topic from the Govt of Maharashtra might be POV -- for example they might not write negative things about certain Maratha rulers, or unnecessarily glorify some. I've listed some credible sources on the talk page of the article in the todo subpage. PS. Have you checked out Project Gutenburg? Mangalorean Catholics
Thank you for the kind words. I would be happy to help by copyediting. I have little knowledge of the subject matter, but I see some Manual of Style issues that I can help with. For one thing, a recent revision of the MoS deprecates the use of date autoformatting. I can run a script to unlink all of the dates in brackets and to make them appear in a consistent format; it will not unlink dates that are autoformatted by citation templates, but those will still be acceptable at FAC. Do I have your permission to unlink the dates? I'll assume that you want the dates to be in day-month-year format unless you say otherwise. That seems to be the norm for every place outside the U.S. Most of the formatted dates in the article conform to that pattern, but I see some that are in month-day-year format. Finetooth (talk) 18:18, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Copyvio
I need to delete this pronto. We cannot keep copyvios in the history of pages. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:39, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- It would be PD if it were published before 1-1-1948 (60 years). From the text, I see many sources that date as late as 1978, so I doubt if the text was published before 1948.
- If it were published in an official gazette, you can invoke Template:Indian law copyright. Some works are PD, under this clause.
- If you do cite any free source (GDFL/CC etc), do cite the source and credits in the Edit summary itself. That is how we attribute in WP other free sites. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:48, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- I deleted the three offending versions from the history of the article. It will not show up now in the history (except to admins). Yes, it doesn't but we can explore several options such as Maritime history of Bombay, Development and so on. I'm looking at the article in a different light... not just get one featured article, but a full series of Mumbai-related featured topic. I still dont have a clear picture on the history of the city, but once all additions are in, it should be easy to figure out what stays here and what gets moved to daughter articles. =Nichalp «Talk»= 20:05, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks
Thank you for the barnstar. PS Did you also see Amateur radio frequency bands in India? When writing the main article, I was suddenly struck by the idea that the daughter article fork I created, could be spun into a featured list. So, I went about raising it to the FL requirements and ran both concurrently. PS are you into Amateur radio by any chance? =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:02, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Barnstar, citation 1
Thank you very much for the barnstar. I appreciate it. After getting your accompanying note, I tightened the prose in the citation 1 note. Looking at it afresh this morning, I thought it could be made clear in fewer words, so I plunged ahead. I don't consider derivations to be original research. You've given the source of the base figures, and your math seems clear and correct. You would have a problem, though, if Machado's numbers are at variance with "official" numbers from a reliable source such as a government census. If the numbers are controversial, you should make that clear in the article. I'm assuming that no such controversy exists, but you would know better than I. Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Belgaum: You may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. Hi Kensplanet, i apologize for adding a picture consisting of merged copyrighted images on the article. This was done with good faith, and i was not aware that it contravenes wikipedia policies. I was actually misled into creating the image, after seeing that the main image on the Goan Catholics article was created with merged copyrighted images. This caused me to believe that it is somehow allowed under the terms of GNU Free Documentation License. I have to admit that i am not very knowledgeable of the image use rules in Wikipedia. I should have read WP:GFDL completely before deciding to go ahead with it. Regards, Joyson Noel (talk) 12:27, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Maps
I notice two maps that you had uploaded.
Issues with them:
- Highly compressed with a great degree of Jpeg artefacts
- Second map is a POV (Kashmir)
- Lossy JPEG format. The preferred format for static maps and diagrams are vector SVG format.
Since I feel that you would be needing high quality maps for your future articles, I thought of giving you some tips on cartography. Map making simpler than you think, as it mostly involves tracing and filling in areas. Would you be interested in some tips to create some professional-looking maps? =Nichalp «Talk»= 10:59, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok, here are the steps:
- Download Inkscape
- Go through the tutorials (it will take you about 30-90 minutes)
- For maps, you need to be proficient in tracing, and closed loop objects (shapes).
Things that you need to know in inkscape:
- Layers
- Filling
- Transparency
- Stroke
- paths and Nodes
- Fonts
- Raise objects, lower objects, align objects
