Survey Invite
I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they effect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take 5 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.
I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.
Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 20:44, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
Article Cats
Hi Grimes. Article Categories are often ordered in a very odd way, aren't they? I have always assumed that alphabetic order is the goal. Perhaps re-ordering would be something best left to an automatic bot script? What you you think? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:38, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
- Especially articles with a huge amount of Categories are hard to read and should be in alphabetic order. An automatic bot script would be nice.Grimes2 (talk) 12:57, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
- I'll see if I can find a noticeboard to ask about this. I'm sure it must have been considered before. The advice given at Wikipedia:FAQ/Categorization is this: "Both the alphabet and importance are used to order categories currently." Which sounds like a bit of a contradiction to me. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:02, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
- Confessing that "my" articles typically have only few categories: I try to sort them rather by relevance. For a conductor who also teaches, Conductor goes first, for a musicologist who occasionally conducts, Academic goes first. - The other day, in a navbox, someone sorted compositions (Brahms) by alphabet, instead of the chronological order they had been in, - made no sense to me, but I reverted only once. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:19, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Gerda. I found a 2014 discussion here, which concluded "Clearly a bad task for a bot, as shown by the consensus below. No further action needed." So it has to be done manually, it seems. However many there are! I'm going to post thread at Wikipedia talk:Categorization of people about the ordering. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:27, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Precious
classical music awards
Thank you for quality contributions to musical quality, by updating articles and articles, by expanding, for example Jörg Widmann, by adding to {{Classical music awards}}, for staying focused on content alone, - preiswürdig: you are an awesome Wikipedian!
--Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:35, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
Do you want to do something on this one? More red link prizes for Johannes Kalitzke and one more for Wolfram Röhrig. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:05, 25 November 2017 (UTC)
Prize expert: I came across this one, Cadaqués Orchestra International Conducting Competition, which only goes to 2012 (after I added that year from fr), and sources are broken or not existant in both languages. Help? There are two more prizes mentioned for Lorenzo Viotti. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:15, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- 12th competition is underway (2012 was the 11th competition). I'll add the prize winners 2017 in a few days (I hope I will remember). Grimes2 (talk) 20:35, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- In an article I just began, there are 2 competitions, one is there in English but not much, the other only in German. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:11, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
Could you perhaps do something about this [1]Bach-Medaille (Bach Medal)? Not even in German, but shouldn't be too hard, only from 2003 ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:54, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

A year ago, you were recipient no. 1709 of Precious, a prize of QAI! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:59, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
This prize was created today (not by me): Frankfurter Musikpreis, in case of interest. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:13, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
Two years precious, and thank you for many more ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:23, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you today for sourcing the many awards of Peter Schreier! - Seasonal greetings full of music, you could even listen to what we sang yesterday, - live broadcast. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:25, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
What do you think about translating de:Kranichsteiner Musikpreis? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:35, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Thank you adding the recipients! The sea of blue is hard to read, how about using the table from de, minus flags and countries, plus composer or performer? It's not overly long, and names without link could be an encouragement to write their aritcles. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:53, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- I think, the total number of recipients is about 140. Only 30 are blue, a sea of red. Hence the limit to blue links (notable recipients). I don't like a table in this place, so I choose a list. Grimes2 (talk) 09:31, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- Could you then please structure a bit, such as adding years? Perhaps some abbreviation for performers? ... because most seem to be composers. I'd normally add what instruments, but please not yet (before DYK) unless with a ref. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:54, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- List already finished, with years. Please have a look. The instruments are given in the ref (pdf). Grimes2 (talk) 10:02, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

- Sorry, don't speak French. Grimes2 (talk) 08:16, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
- Understand, same for me. LouisAlain? It's mostly a list of recipients which could be trimmed to only those with at leas an article in a different language. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:36, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

ToThAc (talk) 20:25, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Congratulations! - Should we have an article about Widmann's opera? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:06, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
- He made two operas: Das Gesicht im Spiegel and Babylon. Unfortunately I didn't see one of these operas in Frankfurt, so I'm not an expert. Grimes2 (talk) 21:21, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
- I wrote about several operas recently that I didn't see, and about one that I saw (and met the composer who came to a normal performance), and about a staged work that is no opera. It only needs sources, - I was just surprised about one mentioned in awards, but not in the text. - Did you see the "Hindemith Prize" 1987, - strange. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:50, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
- There are two Paul Hindemith Prizes. The other prize is the Paul-Hindemith-Preis der Stadt Hanau . We should add a "Not to be confused" lead at the beginning of the article. Grimes2 (talk) 22:03, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

- I wanted to nominate it for DYK but - sorry - too late, + too short. However, we'd have three more days for Babylon. Can you find one catchy quote from the NY Times, to use for that? (Has to be in the article, with the ref behind it.) For the other quotes: consider to have the German original also, in brackets.
- Maybe this quote (from the caption under the picture): "The Staatsoper in Munich spared no expense on its production of Jörg Widmann's "Babylon."" (ref Loomis). Regarding German quotes: Should I add the German original of the quote to the article? Grimes2 (talk) 17:18, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
- Expense is important, - how about something more related to plot / book by philospher / music / megalopolis / Seven? - If quoting Die Welt, I'd deliver the German original also, in brackets. I'd prefer NY Times, because it can be understood without the filter of translation. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:40, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
- I don't understand. Are these quotes for the text of der DYK, or for the article? It doesn't make sense, to deliver direct quotes for the plot / book by philospher etc., because this is already in the article text. Grimes2 (talk) 14:53, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
- I guess I talk too complicated ;) - I'd like to mention something from the NY Times review because it's English. Does it have something about the plot, or the philosopher, or the music, or the big city old and new, or about the magic number seven? One of these would be enough, but that one thing had to be in the article. I can also look myself, but not right now, - have first to nominate one of myself, last possible day. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:08, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
- About number seven: "The number seven — the seven-day week is apparently of Babylonian origin — is an organizing principle of the opera." (loomis) There are also quotes for the other things, but I can't cite nearly the whole article, because of copyright issues.

Frankfurt Opera
Lovely to see you work on this. What do you think about an article Frankfurt Opera, the company, with history from the former house to now, and put the theatre/drama somewhere else, and leave in the current article with the longish title for the new building. And they plan/dream of a newer one, DYK? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:46, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- Can't find any sources for the Frankfurt theatre. So it's better to leave it as it is. There is no decision for making a new construction of the opera somewhere else, or a total renovation. (Would be the same price, more or less.) I added a link for that plan in "External links". Grimes2 (talk) 15:07, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- Every time I link to Frankfurt Opera - for brevity, they change that to the impossible long thing which is not a common name, in no language. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:14, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- Good idea. We could change the articles name to Frankfurt Opera. We should discuss this at the articles talk page. Bavarian State Opera has also a seperate article as opera company. Grimes2 (talk) 15:23, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

Mis-use of the self-published template
Please do not mark books by Stephen Wolfram as self-published (example). While it's true that Stephen Wolfram owns Wolfram Media and they publish his books (along with books by other mathematicians), they are not a vanity publisher. And regardless, according to WP:V: "Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established expert on the subject matter, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications." Stephen Wolfram is an acknowledged expert in the fields of mathematics and computer science and easily meets this criteria. Kaldari (talk) 06:01, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Carbon footprint & multiple edits
Hello, I'm about to speak from my carbon footprint soapbox, for which I apologise in advance, but it needs to be said (and this happens a lot on wikipedia). If possible, it would be advisable to do edits on a given page in one go, rather than multiple small edits that cause the carbon footprint of wikipedia to snowball. For example, I saw that you recently did 96 edits on the Emmanuelle Charpentier page in the last 24 hours. That is more edits than in the previous 2.5 years of the history of her page. Each edit takes up approximately 34K bytes of data space. 96 x 34K bytes = 3264K bytes, or 3.264 MB of data space. Data server space is not free, and takes up a lot of energy (rather like bitcoin). I would alternatively suggest copying the parent text of the most recent edit into a separate off-wikipedia text file, doing all the edits there, and then pasting the final revised version back, in one go.
I certainly don't claim to be perfect in that regard, but it troubles me in general to see such profligate use of server data space. A smaller example is your other set of edits on the Klaus Mäkelä page just today, which could have all been done in one edit rather than 4. I'm sorry for sounding like a nag, but the environmental impact of the internet is one of my long-standing concerns. Thanks for reading, DJRafe (talk) 19:08, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Marina de Gabaráin
Thank you for sorting out the references section, which had got a little messy - and for your other contributions, too. I have now had the opportunity to check out the subject's entry in Kutsch/Riemens, and (as I've also shared with Gerda Arendt) I was disappointed to find many significant errors, both small and major. That unfortunately tends to be the case with non-Spanish reference works, when it comes to treatment of Hispanic subjects, of course: the Sagarmínaga article (on which I based the chronology of the article) is not without one or two problems, but as a source on Spanish singers - especially when it comes to basic birth/death dates - I've found it to be extremely reliable.
It would be interesting to find out where the "1925" alleged d.o.b. came from. I suspect, from the singer herself around the time of her international fame, but that's mere speculation! Practically and logically (given that she enrolled at the RCM here in London around 1946, after training in Italy and Paris) we'd be questioning it anyway, even without Sagarmínaga's very clear 1917. Best, I think, to flag up the discrepancy (as we have) without being swayed by the German lexicon, and leave it at that. Zarzuelauk (talk) 08:36, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

Neston
Thanks for corrctly fixing the page formatting for this edit to Neston. Using the {{cite journal}} ref template for the first time I noticed that the ref was displayed as it is now you've changed it, in other words, showing no 'p' for page number (as in {{cite book}}. That was the reason why I added the 'p' myself. Can you advise an alternative template or attribute to use for this to display correctly? To me, it looks a bit strange as it now is. Thanks Snowy 1973 (talk) 10:31, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Wiki throws a maintenance error. I fixed it. The corrected page format on "cite journal" is well established standard (Chicago referencing). Grimes2 (talk) 10:39, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Rossini: thank you for watching out for my silly mistakes. When I made a round of all his works to find some of those, it occurred to me that in his middle period, we might use his smiling portrait for the more buffa operas, and the serious one for the others. The early pic is good for the early works. I'm surprised that we don't have more images really related to the operas. - A great day, that all occurrences of the late photo are gone, from a time when he didn't compose a single opera ;) - just the magnificent and spirited Petite messe solennelle. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:44, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

- You can nominate (I'm bad in reviewing). Is this the first time, that the article is nominated for DYK? Grimes2 (talk) 21:28, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- There's only one time ;) + and nothing recorded on the talk. What fact would you propose? ... you know him and the article better than I do. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:45, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- Jörg Widmann was the third most performed contemporary composer in 2018. One of his most important compositions is the concert overture Con brio. Grimes2 (talk) 22:04, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- ...that the composer of the concert overture Con brio, Jörg Widmann is also clarinetist and conductor and the third most performed contemporary composer in 2018? Grimes2 (talk) 12:05, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke
On 23 January 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke, who succeeded C. P. E. Bach as the music director of Hamburg, edited an early publication of the The Well-Tempered Clavier in which the first prelude had an extra measure? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Peter Herrmann
Please help, perhaps due to my browser, I see nothing about Herrmann's violin concerto at the Staatsarchiv (only an overview), and no premiere details at Breitkopf. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:16, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- Wrong link? https://archiv.sachsen.de/archiv/bestand.jsp?guid=e0c24353-dfac-4fa1-b156-3487e94f330e Grimes2 (talk) 10:22, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- Breitkopf: I don't like the idea to cite, but the premiere of Sym2 is only mentioned at the composer's homepage. Grimes2 (talk) 10:28, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- thank you, and I found a publisher's bio (which may be from the composer's but looks one step more independent) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:52, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
ITN recognition for Arik Brauer
On 27 January 2021, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Arik Brauer, which you updated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. Stephen 02:15, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
Thank you soo much for expanding! - on the Main page with Vision pictured (not by me), more art in Vienna - cantata in the Dreikönigskirche on Sunday, DYK? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:00, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
If we add about 1,000 more chars to Brauer, he could also go for DYK, - making the awards section prose and writing more lead is probably all it takes. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:59, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
