Adoption

I am done with lesson one. -- Lee Tru. 15:10, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

I know I'm a real pain, but you need to explain how the policy you cited applies, not just link it. Sorry. Once you do that, I will grade and we can move onward. Go Phightins! 21:52, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind acknowledgement

Thank you!

Ben, thank you for awarding me an Editor's Barnstar on 2013/06/17. Random acts of kindness seem an endangered species these days. Your encouragement to "Keep Calm and Carry On" is appreciated. I've enjoyed being in the WikiSOO class with you during Spring 2013.

I love the quotation from Umberto Ecco on your user page. I will be putting that to use ;-) ChristineBushMV (talk) 16:28, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

No problem, I truly hope you stick around afterwards . Btw, I'm Ben, not Clem, but that's all right :)
I am going to try to make it to class tonight, but we shall see. Go Phightins! 17:09, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject AFC needs your help... again

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive

WikiProject AFC is holding a one month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from July 1st, 2013 – July 31st, 2013.

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 1000 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

A new version of our AfC helper script is released! It includes many bug fixes, new improvements and features, code cleanup, and more page cleanups. If you want to see a full list of changes, go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Helper script/Development page. Please report bugs and feature requests there, too! Thanks.

A barnstar for you!

Big Time Rush Barnstar
Here is a unique barnstar for helping me with Summer Break Tour. I tricked you into helping me. If you don't like Big Time Rush, too bad. Congratulations, you are now a Rusher (Big Time Rush fan) and you may outright display this on your user page. Thanks again for your help. ~~JHUbal27 01:33, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Happy Memorial Day!

Hi Ben, thanks for the link to the OER article in "South African learners want Wikipedia; Editing of Israel topics." I will try to integrate what is described into the article. ChristineBushMV (talk) 17:42, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
No problem ... not everyone, including me prior to the course, even new what the term was, so I thought it'd be helpful to link ... a nice shoutout from the WMF guy whose name presently escapes me about the importance of OER. Go Phightins! 17:46, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Signpost reports

Thanks for working on "In the media"!

Jarry is stepping down from writing the Tech report. I gave him a Signpost barnstar. Will you sign it with me?. Thanks, --Pine 06:34, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

EotW criteria

When we as a group started brainstorming and putting together the criteria for the EotW award we all agreed that it should be for the un-sung, un-acknowleged editors that work here. We seem to have drifted just a bit off-course and I wonder if we should do some corrective maneuvers so that our Original Purpose doesn't get lost and we become a glorified barnstar. So far, except for some Admin nominations we have rubber-stamped every nomination. Not a problem so far except for all the rubber-stamp ink on my hands. Here is the rub. I was working on the infobox for next weeks recipient and I noticed that he had about two dozen barnstars. Again, no a problem. He is a hard working editor that deserves everyone of them and probably more. Its been twenty weeks (or so) since we started. Maybe it would be a good idea to have another brainstorming session with Dennis and whatever clerks show up. In no way do I want to rescind Chaswicks nomination or put a hold on his Award. He deserves it and he should get it. We just need to be sure that we are all on the same page moving forward. Maybe we need to be stricter. maybe we need a Nominations patroller who will gather the interested parties to discuss a non-conforming nomination. Let me know what you think. ```Buster Seven Talk 20:29, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Let me think about this. I agree we have become somewhat of a glorified barnstar. Go Phightins! 20:31, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Uncletomwood

Hey. I've been stalking Uncletomwood's adoption page and he just does not understand vandalism. Acting like I want to help, what should we do? Is he still interested in adoption? By the way, I saw your examples. I would reverse your theory that the user who blanked Mandadan and replaced it with school information is bad faith vandalism/spam and the user who blanked a section in List of Big Time Rush episodes is not vandalism (WP:AGF). It's a {{uw-delete1}} scenario. It's pretty clear you don't like Big Time Rush. Just kidding. Wait, that doesn't make sense. I'm on his side. Nobody blanks any BTR articles and gets away with it. ~~JHUbal27 04:36, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

He has about the sense for vandalism that Johncheverly did; we can come back to it I guess. If you know how (and I think you do), would you archive the vandalism lesson with something like "NOT COMPLETED YET" in the message that appears in the green box and post the Twinkle lesson? Thanks. Go Phightins! 12:21, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
Done Meanwhile, I'll check on your other adoptees. By the way, did you notice Uncletom never answers his talk page messages? Strange. Also, just because he has a Ph.D., he thinks he knows everything. On his Indian articles, he wants it to be perfect. People are trying to make constructive edits and are not trying to deliberately post false information. He is biting the newbies and scaring people away by giving them "only warning" vandalism notices. I told him to follow bold, revert, discuss. He is bold, reverts the edits, but does not do the discussing part. There's my rant for today. Enjoy. ~~JHUbal27 18:58, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks! Will look at it as soon as I get a chance. I know you are still struggling with vandalism , not a huge deal, but something we will want to work on prior to the final exam ... about 40% of the practical exam is about vandalism. Adoption Query

Hi. I know you're not gone yet. (song lyric) Before you leave, get up to go, I wanna know.

Uncletomwood: He's on a personal break. He was going a little fast.

  • Great. When he is ready to move on. Feel free to give him lesson 7 (and that's the one you are authorized to grade )

Ghorpaapi: He is on lesson 8 doing the test.

  • Thanks. If he gets to the final, please hold until I return.

Benedictdilton: He is working on lesson three.

  • Okay. That's a pretty tough one. Work with either Jackson or Tazer so he fully grasps those concepts.

Lee Tru.: He has been inactive for two weeks. Do I archive him?

  • Talk to him. See what he wants to do. Don't archive unless he tells you to.

Thanks. ~~JHUbal27 23:10, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Replied "inline" above. Thanks! Go Phightins! 02:58, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
I graded the lesson seven test for Uncletom. How did I do? [1] Thanks! ~~JHUbal27 17:08, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
I think you did pretty well. The only complaint/suggestion I would have is on scenario III, BLPPROD might be a better option. Go Phightins! 20:08, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 23:57, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Request for a little Highbeam help

Hey Go Phightins! I see you got access to Highbeam in the last round to get accounts. Mine expired, and I need to check a couple facts on an article. Would you be so kind as to do that for me? See a discussion at Talk:1988 Winter Olympics#Cost. An IP challenged a claim that the 1988 games were the most expensive to that point in history, and I don't think their challenge is unreasonable given their links. The source I used was here, and I would just like to make sure that the source did say what I did in the article, and to double check if I had it in the right context. I suspect that the figure is for the cost of staging the games specifically, and excludes infrastructure (which would definitely have put Montreal ahead). Also, an IP changed a statement about the record number of participating nations to say that 1988 saw 8 more compete than any previous Winter Games, but I originally had that as a higher number. Could you double check this source for me? I would be most appreciative, and would owe you a GA review or something if you could do this for me. Cheers! Resolute 01:55, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Resolute. Unfortunately I am literally on my way to bed right now, and am leaving tomorrow morning for a week ... if I have time before I leave tomorrow, I will try to, but otherwise, I may not be able to help. Let me see how tomorrow morning goes, but if by 11 AM EDT you haven't gotten a response, assume I just didn't get to it. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help. Go Phightins! 02:24, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
It's alright. Don't rush anything on my account! Resolute 02:37, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

All right, so on point one, the article says that the Calgary Olympics were the most expensive, winter or summer, ever held at a price tag of $829 million Canadian. The second source says that Calgary has a total of 57 nations, 17 more than ever before, are participating. I believe this is all you needed. Thanks! Go Phightins! 12:05, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Yes it is, thanks! Resolute 15:36, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Blatant Copyvio

Holla,

Just informing you that there might be some blatant copyvio going on in my adoption, as I currently try to set up my adoption school. I might end up taking portions of your adoption programme and your tests for my own adoption school.

Hope you dont mind :)

WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Poland Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and Canada Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Adoption

Hello!

I am a relatively new user on Wkipedia although I have been editing on Wikia for a year and a half now, Wikipedia guidelines and style is fairly new to me. You look to be a good adopter and so I am requesting you to adopt me! Thank you. =} Rainbow Shifter (talk) 19:25, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Hey! As you can see on the top of the page, Phightins! is going to be either incommunicado or with only sporadic activity here until late July. I would recommend looking to other adopters, such as User:TheOriginalSoni. Alternatively, you could wait until he gets back and has a slot. I could also start you through the process, but I am not nearly as good as phightins. Let us know what you want to do. Tazerdadog (talk) 20:45, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
Hello, Rainbow Shifter and Welcome to Wikipedia! :)
I currently have my adoption school full, but I hear GorillaWarfare and Crisco are accepting adoptees. Feel free to approach either of them for your adoption.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
