FAC Image review

Hi, I was looking over an older FAC archive and noticed that you had done an image review on a previous FAC of mine, and I was wondering if you could do one on my current FAC? It's one of the last two things I need for this review (the other being a source formatting check). --JDC808 20:31, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello @JDC808:, I was taking a small break from FAC-stuff but did the image review nonetheless ;). I have added one suggestion for a possible improvement, and unfortunately the rationale for the last image is quite weak and doesn't meet NFCC-criteria (imo). GermanJoe (talk) 21:32, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, I will have a look over it when I get home (and on a computer instead of a phone). --JDC808 02:48, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
I was about to respond at the FAC page, but it got promoted, which is great. My response was to the suggestion. I see what you were saying. I found it hard to describe with the images that were there, but I found this (File:Kratos GoW3 vs Ascension.jpg) comparison shot and added it. Is it okay? --JDC808 22:08, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
As that aspect is covered in the main text, and the image is useful to illustrate this change, it should be OK. GermanJoe (talk) 22:46, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
Great. Thanks again. --JDC808 03:35, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

CSS styling in templates

Hello everyone, and sincere apologies if you're getting this message more than once. Just a heads-up that there is currently work on an extension in order to enable CSS styling in templates. Please check the document on mediawiki.org to discuss best storage methods and what we need to avoid with implementation. Thanks, m:User:Melamrawy (WMF), 09:11, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Request for a Source Review

Hello! I apologize for inconvenience again, and thank you again for your help with my previous FACs. I was wondering if you could possibly help me again for Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Eve Russell/archive1. I would be more than happy to help with any other article/nomination if you do the source check. I understand however if you would not like to if you are either too busy or not interested. Thank you in advance either way. Aoba47 (talk) 15:14, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Aoba47:, I probably won't have time for a thorough source review (just doing the occasional quick image check and other stuff at the moment). But it's quite early in your nomination - I am sure another reviewer will step in. Good luck with your nomination. GermanJoe (talk) 02:17, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi GermanJoe, i am very much new on wikipedia and clueless on how to message you, been trying to figure it out from 2 hours.

my question is how come all of my edits were removed? I haven't advertised or promoted any page, but because the word I inserted did not already have an article in Wikipedia that's why i used an external link as its explanation. But to me, the description i provided regarding that word does contribute to the rest of the article, because it is not already mentioned anywhere on the article.

So I don't know why all my edits were removed.

And what do you suggest I do? Should I first create a Wiki article on the word that I want to talk about, and then insert that Wiki link in my edits, instead of using an external link??Rounaksahmed (talk) 04:21, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Rounaksahmed: and welcome to Wikipedia (I have moved your message to the bottom in a separate section, where new posts are usually added). To your question: information about a topic should be based on independent reliable sources (newspapers, books, academic journals, non-promotional expert websites, etc. - see WP:RS), not on primary promotional websites from companies. For example: a statement like "There are also open-source CRM solutions" should not be based on a website offering open-source CRM solutions, but needs an uninvolved third-party source verifying this fact (in this case probably a software expert, an academic or a journalist with some professional knowledge). Another important point (just in case): if editors are connected to a certain topic, they need to follow Wikipedia's "conflict of interest" guideline (see WP:COI). Any kind of promotional activity is prohibited on Wikipedia. I'll post some additional links about this topic and about Wikipedia editing in general on your user talkpage. Hope that helps. Editing News #1—2017

VisualEditor
Did you know?

Did you know that you can review your changes visually?

Screenshot showing some changes to an article. Most changes are highlighted with text formatting.
When you are finished editing the page, type your edit summary and then choose "Review your changes".

In visual mode, you will see additions, removals, new links, and formatting highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Toggle button showing visual and wikitext options; visual option is selected.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

Screenshot showing the same changes, in the two-column wikitext diff display.

The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [87]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [88]

Other changes:

  • You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [89]
  • The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [90]
  • The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the "hamburger" icon) for quicker access. [91] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [92]
  • You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [93]
  • Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [94]
  • The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [95]
  • A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [96]
  • There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [97]

Future changes

  • The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [98]
  • The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. [99]
  • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [100]

Regarding Edits

Hi GermanJoe,

I just came across your edits on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_drug_testing

I want to clarify some points here:

1) The information was provided is not available in Wikipedia. 2) The edits were the inclusion of the factors and samples that affect the detection time. 3) Overall the changes are regarding the timeline, and the citation was also from the reliable secondary sources. (As per wiki guideline )

I request you to again review the changes, it wasn't about the spamming. Also, there's no any reason for spamming as all the links are NoFollow.

Hope for the best.

--Mmohit22 (talk) 07:33, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Mmohit22:, as a promotional source without any details about editorial oversight, or the authors and their expertise, the reference is not a reliable source per WP:RS, let alone WP:MEDRS for all information regarding human health. Such information needs to be referenced to a high-quality academic source. If you disagree, please use the article's talkpage Talk:Cannabis_drug_testing, or ask for further advice at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine or Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. Best regards. GermanJoe (talk) 09:38, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Clean-up

Hello! I hope you can join in cleaning-up K-drama pages and their international broadcast sections as they are in violation of Wiki guidelines (Wiki is not a catalog/ TV guide). It's also a breeding ground for promotion from streaming sites, legal or not. It's an exclusive feature of these Korean pages, US/UK shows don't have it.

For example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_Lovers:_Scarlet_Heart_Ryeo#International_broadcast If that's not a list Wiki opposes looks like, I don't know what is. Thanks!Chiefyuks (talk) 03:19, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
