Stop! Engage brain! Are you looking for the Macedonian Wikipedians' notice board?

Just curious as to your reasoning for changing "native inhabitants" to "earlier inhabitants". Do you have the same view about "Native Americans", for instance? Would you prefer "indigenous"? Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:59, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re "invasion" and "displacement" - not true, I think ... anyway, "earlier" is very weak and I'd rather change it to "existing" or "indigenous" inhabitants. I don't speak Welsh at all - although I have distant Welsh antecedents and live here now, I was born and lived most of my life in England, which is what makes me interested in the relationship. I saw some youtube clips of some Finnish metal bands a while ago and I was quite impressed I have to say. WHat is the Tajik connection with you. To the UK having a fluency of the language is quite unusual, do you have Tajik ancestry or something? Hello Francis. Recently you removed the above image from article Khojaly Massacre. You indicated that it is not particularly appropriate at the top of the page. Well, I think the monument is the only available material at Wikipedia to illustrate the article, and is the only free available image of the monument that can be found on Commons. This being said, do you think we should include the image in the article at all or maybe wait until the deletion request settles? Thanks --Kimse (talk) 20:35, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article is about the massacre, and not about the city. So, since we don't have the images from the massacre itself appropriately licensed for commons, it leaves us with only this image to use. Or do you have anything in mind to suggest that could be use from Armenian side? We also could use some images from other languages under Fair Use, but I think they'll get deleted anyway. About the mentioned deletion request, do you know how long they usually last? --Kimse (talk) 22:00, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think a city photo would rather be used in Khojali instead of in Khojaly Massacre. Have you seen the images on the subject from other languages? I think this monument image is as neutral addition as it can get, at least for now. In my search of other visual materials for this article, I stumbled upon one from Askeran. Take a look at the article's image, it's close but in my opinion it's not exactly related to the massacre.
As a comparison, let's take a look at (1) Virginia Tech massacre. They don't have images of just the campus there, they have images of mourning students, a satellite photo, student's taking cover and an interim memorial photo besides many others. And (2), Auschwitz concentration camp doesn't just have images of the Polish city of Oświęcim, but also of the sight of the camp, satellite photo, maps, and several memorials. Therefore, I think the Image:Khojaly Monument.jpg is a good visual representation of the article for now. And when more free licensed images become available with time, more of them can be used in the article. I rest my case! :) --Kimse (talk) 23:13, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of List of famous people described as anglophiles

[edit]

I have nominated List of famous people described as anglophiles, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of famous people described as anglophiles. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Hi,
I need your help. I am working on a research project at Boston College, studying creation of medical information on Wikipedia. You are being contacted, because you have been identified as an important contributor to one or more articles.

Would you will be willing to answer a few questions about your experience? We've done considerable background research, but we would also like to gather the insight of the actual editors. Details about the project can be found at the user page of the project leader, geraldckane. Survey questions can be found at geraldckane/medsurvey. Your privacy and confidentiality will be strictly protected!

The questions should only take a few minutes. I hope you will be willing to complete the survey, as we do value your insight. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Professor Kane if you have any questions.

Tag removal

[edit]

Please don't remove speedy deletion tags from articles, as you did here. It's considered vandalism. If you disagree with the tag, please add a {{hold on}} tag and make your case on the article's talk page instead.

The article in question has been deleted three times before, so the tag was placed in good faith. I'm not going to speedy delete it this time because I think you've tried to assert notability in a reasonable way, but I still don't think it meets our criteria as it is so I'm going to send it to AfD instead. Kafziel Complaint Department 16:33, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, seeing as the article asserts notability, the tag was inappropriate so I removed it. - Francis Tyers · 17:00, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please, you could translate in Tajik the articles Martin Weinek and Kaspar Capparoni? Thank you so much!

[edit]

Good evening to you and regards from Campora San Giovanni. I write you regarding the articles of a note police television series: Kommissar Rex. For better saying some principal actors of the international series. Martin Weinek (pronunced Vaynek) and Kaspar Capparoni. Weinek is the veteran of the Austrian series, now real member of the series international, as well as excellent agricultural and theatrical entrepreneur and an experienced wine-grower. Capparoni is the new entry of the series, but he has already worked and he works for international productions and with famous directors, I quote among everybody: Dario Argento. I think that the series will arrive within the winter 2008 thanks also to Rai International, that will be transmitted in 150 countries and in more than 70/80 languages, among which the Tajik. Naturally if you will help me in this, me rechangend really the favor translating a biography or a geographical article in Italian and Sicilian. In fact on the Italian edition they are biographer and geographer. In attends him of one certain answer of yours I thank you in advance and I greet you from Campora San Giovanni, my village native. In change I will help you with the Italian dialects that I know: Sicilian, Neapolitan, Calabrian of Cosenza, Venetian, Piedmontese. The main point is that I have a base in Italian. In attends him of one certain answer of yours, I thank you in advance and I send you the regards from my village native.--Lodewijk Vadacchino (talk) 21:24, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your intervention in the NK article. I understand that some of my edits need more discussion, however I dont understand why all my edits were removed whithout the mention what exactly is dubious or something. For example, you removed some new images and some text were was said that in the 9th c. NK was ruled by the House of Aranshahik, that Sahl Smbatean established the House of Khachen in 821, that the principalities of Karabakh were officially recognised by the Russian Empire, etc. etc. All of this information was based on the works of the western scholar R. Hewsen.

If you think that A and B are dubious, I think you should remove only A and B mantion that in the talkpage. In this case my edits are removed from A to Z. I respectfully ask you to replace my edits and images which are not disputed by anyone and mention the ones which need further discussion in the talkpage. --Vacio (talk) 08:50, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I appreaciate the work of mediators. However, often facilitators assume a posture that promotes artificial impartiality also known as wrongful balance. Consensus-building is a good thing but for someone who is not well-familiar with the subject matter, it might be difficult to tell between a well-argued-out and backed-up opinion and a frivolous POV edit. As a result, facilitators end up mechanically endorsing or reversing edits they do not understand - just to preserve a mantle of "balance." Please be aware of this nuance. Capasitor (talk) 23:59, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reaction on my talk page. However I must note, that the current intro of Nagorno-Karabakh seems not to be a result of very long discussion and concensus, but rather a massive edits by user Neelmack (talk · contribs) with not even a single word in the talk page. I think the current intro is very muddy and contains some POVs. I hope we will work together to make it better. With kind regards --Vacio (talk) 12:53, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In your last edit of Nagorno-Karabakh you also reverted my last edit [1], by which I had removed the mention that Artsakh was been a province of Caucasian Albania. I have quoted the western scholar Robert Hewsen in the talk page to show that this is a misconception. No one jet argued against this argumemt, however this is the third time that excerpt is placed back after I have removed it. --Vacio (talk) 11:12, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, until a few days ago this article was a total trainwreck. I just did a major overhaul, although I believe I was pretty conservative: I cut all the redundancies, any material that was fringe or unrelated, and then tried to reorganize what was left so that distinct points of view or approaches were explicit. It still needs a lot of work (I explain all this in more detail on the article talk page, bottom). I created a section on "American Anthropology" but I am thinking perhaps that should be renamed "cultural anthropology." Because one thing I did not do - but which I believe is important - was to create a new section on "culture and language." But I am not qualified to write such a section. I am hoping you can, or at least make a start of it. I was thinking of a section that says something about how in human evolution culture and language coevolved; in what ways culture and language are related, and in what ways they are not, how linguists think of culture, maybe some basic stuff on ethnolinguistics and sociolinguistics with links to the real articles. Well, I hope you will consider it. Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 21:15, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Francis. I would like to bother you for a while :-) Someone has created a category which I've labelled it for speedy deletion, but another admin deleted it. It is a blatant POV pushing, and not to mention WP:V, WP:NOR, WP:DIS and WP:Hoax. It is funny though, that in the history section, the author is not marked. Could this be some sort of a hack? Can this be fixed? Thank you. Bomac (talk) 21:55, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bomac. Deleting the category page is no problem – because it was you who created the category page in the first place. It didn't previously exist. What did exist was some vandal edit to some template that made articles appear in this category [2]. Somebody fixed it, but it apparently takes a bit of time to actually show up in the pages. You don't know me but I'm 16 years old and writing the Animal treatment in rodeo article. One contributor who has given me something of a difficult time (yes, sometimes deserved) has suggested the article be deleted. It was the final blow, and I sent the article to AfD. I'm crying now. I spent so much time and love on the article. I notice you are a member of the animal rights project. Could you take some time and glance at the article? What have I done wrong? Make your recommendation to keep, delete, or merge. The article will be swamped with the rodeo crowd who have opposed the article from day one. I had great trouble finding high grade reliable secondary source material for the Pro-Rodeo stand and the article is top heavy with the animal rights/animal welfare stand. Of course, it should be deleted -- it's unblanaced. I'm so confused. Thank you! Buttermilk1950 (talk) 06:42, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Subhon Yodgori

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Subhon Yodgori, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Nothing notable

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Could you please take a look at the Tajiks in Xinjiang page?

[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if you could take a look at the the Tajiks of Xinjiang page. There was a lengthy discussion about what to call the people in Xinjiang who speak the the Sariqoli and Wakhi languages and are called Tajiks in China and in virtually all Chinese languages references, including those written by Chinese Tajiks. There was an agreement to call the page "Tajiks in Xinjiang", but some individuals have repeatedly reverted all references to Tajiks to "Pamiris", a term that applies to Tajikistan but is not in use in Chinese literature. I'm open to a debate about this, but the page has been reverted several times by an unregistered user (116.58.100.78). I have done a GA Reassessment of the Mythical origins of language article as part of the GA Sweeps project. I have found it does not meet the GA Criteria. As such I have put the article on hold pending work that needs to be done. My review is here. I am notifying you as the primary editor that this article may be delisted if it is not brought up to GA standards. If you have questions please contact me on my talk page. Hi. You weighed in on the Doctor Steel AfD debate back in February 2007. Thought you might like to know that there is a new one up for review, in case you wish to comment again. I have contacted as many as I could who weighed in on the last one, both for and against, in an effort to be fair. --Jonnybgoode44 (talk) 06:42, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I have concerns about the above article, and intend to start another GAR. I saw you got some improvment done in the sourcing for the GAR in June. I think other areas now need a significant amount of work - if you have any comments, agreeing, or thinking i am being too strict, or see more areas needing work, your input would be welcome. Thanks!

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Resistance is futile. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Resistance is futile (2 nomination). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Hi Francis, I saw your name on the list of photographers in Wales. I'm currently writing an article about Sally Amis, sister of the writer, Martin Amis, both of whom were born in Uplands, Swansea. I'm hoping that someone who lives in the area would be willing to take a photograph of the house Sally was born in. It is 24 The Grove, Uplands, Swansea. I realize you may not be near there, but in case you are ever there for other reasons (shopping or whatever), I was wondering if you could bear this request in mind. My name is Claudi Balaguer (User Capsot from the Catalan Wikipedia and the Occitan Wikiccionari), I saw you worked on the Icelandic Wiktionary and then looked for you here and saw your profile. It seems that you show a keen interest in diverse cultures and languages, so you understand very well what are a minorized language and culture and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to that moment because Catalan has not a/one state. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this template on your first page Wikimedia CAT and/or sign following the link on the template. Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to minorized languages and cultures in the future! You can have more information on my userpage. Thanks again, I wish you a nice, pleasant and warm summer, take care! If you ever need something about Occitan or Catalan just let me know I'll be real glad to help! Google Translation

[edit]

Hi there Francis. I am trying to make best use of Google translation. But its failings - dramatic or hilarious - are often quite radial. I tried simplifying the source language; working with 3 languages to locate glitches, etc. Obviously, if the source language is foreign to me, then I am stuck, but even so, the same source text often provides the gobbledygook across several target languages. When I make contributions to better translations, they seem futile as the same mistakes simply come back. Do you have any suggestion or even any more reliable free translation sites you can direct me to? Thanks. Politis (talk) 13:05, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that makes sense. I usually go Macedonian (occasionally German) into English. For Macedonian I have such little knowledge that I need to guess. Of course, if I do English into Macedonian I am liable to get some belly laughs from my correspondents. I also do English into Greek or French where I can usually tell if anything is amiss. I assume that Macedonian into Greek or French goes through English. Politis (talk) 23:30, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck with your research. The challenge is that so many words shift meaning according to context. Also the tenses from English->other languages go all over the place. I think the market might be opening up for Chinese. I also found that google translate is better than Babel Fish. Politis (talk) 16:44, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

re this comment

[edit]

Hey,

Just wanted to make a couple points regarding your comment.

1)No one doubts there is an Iroquois passport (IP), but proposal 2 would essentially argue that we should move IP to United States passport to suggest that an IP is just another kind of passport which Americans carry.

2)re "Wales" - Wales isn't a disputed territory in the same sense as Western Sahara (WS). Northern Ireland is! Check out Flag of Northern Ireland. The union jack appears there.

3) re "Kurdistan" - Kurdistan isn't a distinct/real geographic entity. Anyone looking for the "flag of Kurdistan" would probably be aware that Kurdistan is only a theoretical place, and hence the Kurd flag doesn't really represent the region. If someone looks for Flag of Western Sahara and sees the SADR flag, they might presume that flag is actually used to represent the region, which of course is incorrect...... Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

[edit]

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:30, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable organization. Does not meet WP:ORG or WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:01, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Language-population update project

[edit]

Hi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{sigfig}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.

Jump in at the WP:LANG talk page if you have any comments or concerns. Thanks for any help you can give!
