Welcome to the 2024 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2024 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close on 31 January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), and Frostly (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your efficiency in setting up the contest. One thing I failed to do in my early years as a judge was to add new contestants to the "send to" list for the newsletter. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 15:14, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
The WikiCup
Having been occupied with real life issues, I looked in to see what, if anything, had been done about the 2024 WikiCup, and I find you have worked out how the system works and are well on top of setting things up. Very good, - thank you! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:44, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks @Cwmhiraeth, I appreciate it.I noticed that your sandbox2 links to https://wikicup.toolforge.org/script.php. Should I be clicking it, and if so, what does clicking that link do? – Epicgenius (talk) 20:14, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- Jarry gave me that link in 2022 (I think) telling me that I could use it to trigger the bot to check for new submissions. This was because during the previous two Cups, the bot has made a final pass at at 20.00 hours UTC or thereabouts on the final day of the contest, and I had had to manually adjust the final scores to reflect submissions made after this time. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 15:06, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, that makes sense. When I clicked the bot at the start of the competition (which was still 31 December, my time), I was confused because it didn't make any edits to the WikiCup pages. It took four hours before I realized the bot only makes an edit when competitors add a submission to their page. – Epicgenius (talk) 19:22, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for 5 February 2024. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 4, 2024, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/February 2024. Please keep an eye on that page, as comments regarding the draft blurb may be left there by user:dying, who assists the coordinators by making suggestions on the blurbs, or by others. I also suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from two days before it appears on the Main Page. Thanks and congratulations on your work! Gog the Mild (talk) 16:29, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. I think you meant Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 5, 2024, but only a pedant like me cares about that. – Epicgenius (talk) 19:42, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Reading the article made me think of hooks and you and how the subject matter is up your alley. I see you did edit the article. I bet you could 5x it and get a great hook. So many things to do! Happy New year! Bruxton (talk) 19:36, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Bruxton, and Happy New Year to you as well. Funnily, I did consider expanding the article 5x back in 2020 or 2021, but at the time I didn't have access to as many sources as I do now (plus, I wanted it to be part of a double hook with Macy's Herald Square). – Epicgenius (talk) 19:38, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- I noticed it when I added Thirsty Beaver to Holdout (real estate). Right now MDC looks rather stubbish but I just thought it would make a good DYK= maybe someday. Thirsty Beaver did very well. So much to do! Bruxton (talk) 19:42, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
DYK for 130 West 30th Street
On 2 January 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 130 West 30th Street, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the owner of 130 West 30th Street would have renamed the structure the "Beaver Pelt Building" if it could not be named after its architect? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/130 West 30th Street. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 130 West 30th Street), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

I don't agree with what you have said for the merge. WP:LASTING also says that [i]t may take weeks or months to determine whether or not an event has a lasting effect. This does not, however, mean recent events with unproven lasting effect are automatically non-notable.
Please consider reverting. Thanks, Wikiexplorationandhelping (talk) 23:14, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- As this is a rapidly developing story, I have proceeded to revert your edit. Thanks, Wikiexplorationandhelping (talk) 23:27, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Wikiexplorationandhelping, thanks for the message, but I will not be reverting myself. The only source in the article, before I redirected it, says: "Twenty-four people suffered minor injuries during the incident". Perhaps this can be reconsidered if news sources are still talking about it after a few weeks, but given that no one was killed or seriously injured, this seems to be a WP:ROUTINE news story about a minor accident. – Epicgenius (talk) 23:27, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- By the way, I've restored the redirect per WP:NEVENT. Please read that carefully before restoring the page again; I don't think this "rapidly developing story" needs its own article at this point. – Epicgenius (talk) 23:33, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- I fully agree with Epicgenius here. A collision with 24 minor injuries is unlikely to merit its own article at any point; a sentence or two on the station article is the proper amount of coverage here. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:39, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Sounds fair. I suppose if some changes get covered by news as a result of this derailment, I'll try writing the article again. Or maybe I'll make a new draft on this and see if it can pass AFC when that happens. Thanks, Wikiexplorationandhelping (talk) 03:06, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

The Brooklyn Tower: chronology
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Brooklyn_Tower&diff=next&oldid=1193838501
Hi,
You recently simplified the text in the lead paragraph of the article titled "The Brooklyn tower", changing it from:
Construction lasted from 2018 to 2023. Developed by JDS Development Group, it is situated [..]
to:
Developed by JDS Development Group from 2018 to 2022, it is situated [..]
I dithered over making the same change. According to the article, JDS became involved in 2013. Thus, though construction began in 2018, "development", in the sense of JDS employees working on the project, began much earlier. So the new wording isn't quite right. Up to you.
— Black Walnut talk 09:45, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Black Walnut, thanks for bringing this up. While in a technical sense they did develop the physical building between 2018 and 2022, I've changed it to "Developed by JDS Development Group and built from 2018 to 2022". – Epicgenius (talk) 14:47, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup question
Hi! I've decided to give the WikiCup a shot this year as a means of tracking progress. A DYK for a new article I published to the mainspace in November last year ran today–does that count towards the DYK points for this round? Thanks for helping put this little shindig together, ~ Pbritti (talk) 17:57, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Pbritti, thanks for the question. Since you worked on it significantly, and since that DYK ran today, you indeed can claim points for that article in this round. Epicgenius (talk) 18:10, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

I only joined WikiCup today. Can I claim score from my articles earlier in January?
Hello @Epicgenius,
Hope all is well. I joined WikiCup today, and I thank you for creating my WikiCup submission page. I just submitted some of my work earlier in January (one GA passed on Jan 7, another on Jan 9, and a DYK featured on Jan 8). Can I claim score from these articles?
I am aware that today is Jan 24 / 25, which is a little over 14 days for the three of them, but I hope that 14 days is not a hard requirement–I am just a little bit late to the game. Had I been aware of WikiCup a few days earlier, I would have submitted them. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 01:49, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
