NARA
Hey Dominic,
I am wondering if this is something I could do, though it would be quite a trip. I may begin looking up train information..
I have been active at the Spanish Wikisource for quite some time now, and I am curious, are you aware of any archived documents which are written in Spanish? I would love to add some material similar to the NARA project at enws. - Theornamentalist (talk) 01:54, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- I don't have a particularly great answer to that. I am sure there is some stuff, but it will take some digging. [1] is the online catalog, but you'll notice that there is no way to search by language. You'll have to do some creative searching to try to pull some up. For example, doing a simplistic search for the term "in Spanish," I pull up some documents like [2] and [3]. If you compile a list of documents you are interested in, we can certainly have them pulled for you to scan. You'll notice one of the days I chose Chile (a personal interest of mine, to be honest). I don't think I saw any Spanish records when doing a cursory search for Chile-related records, unfortunately, but there's a ton of delightfully unexpected stuff sitting in the archives waiting to be found. Dominic·t 02:17, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry I can't say for sure but I am planning on coming down at least one of the weekdays, probably Wednesday and helping out. Do you know if it would be possible to look for images of Medal of Honor recipients? If not its quite alright but I thought I would ask. If not I'll be glad to scan in whatever needs to be scanned. --Kumioko (talk) 02:59, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- You can do whatever you want. :-) The themes I chose are just to interest people, but if you have a project of your own, you should definitely work on it. Please see if you can find the records you think you want in the catalog, because I will have to request any records for our use early and have them held, since the research room doesn't fulfill pull requests in the evening. If it's a large series or you aren't sure, I can ask someone for help locating material. Dominic·t 17:59, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Need a Little NARA Help
I can't make it to NARA myself from Pittsburgh, but am familiar with NARA and its procedures. I have a need, for a personal history project, for scans of a few pages of a Navy ship log, or at least for someone to identify the pages I need. If there's somebody there who might be willing to help with this, I'd love it if you could let me know. What I need should take well under an hour, and I'd be willing to buy the person lunch, or pay some gas money, or whatever they deem proper. Lou Sander (talk) 15:16, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Is there a certain log your interested in? I work at the Navy Yard in DC and they have a lot here as well. --Kumioko (talk) 17:34, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- USS Waller (DDE-466) logs from Summer, 1964. I went on a Med cruise in Waller, and am interested in capturing certain dates and places. I wouldn't think the proper log was at the Navy Yard. Lou Sander (talk) 01:04, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Wisdom for your User Page
Kipling's "In the Neolithic Age" conveys some of the "no rules" stuff that you have on your page. "There are nine and sixty ways of constructing tribal lays, and every single one of them is right." The whole poem is HERE. It's great stuff, if you can understand 19th century British lingo. Lou Sander (talk) 15:20, 30 December 2011 (UTC) PS- I just looked at the Background Notes at the bottom, and they decode the lingo very well. LS

NARA
Hi, Dominic. I'm not sure I understand how this whole partnership with the National Archives works, so forgive me if this request is off-base. I am looking for a possible free image of Bert T. Combs. He's best known for being Governor of Kentucky, but he was also briefly a federal judge on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in the late 1960s. That leads me to believe there could be an image of him produced by the federal government (i.e. free) out there, but I've had no luck finding one so far, so I'm using a fair use image until one can be found. Is looking for or helping other folks find something like this part of your gig? Acdixon (talk · contribs) 13:51, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking! I'm definitely glad you inquired, and you're not in the wrong place. I'm still gearing up here at NARA, and so I haven't even touched my user page or the WikiProject yet to update it with information about what I am doing. If an official portrait of this person exists, I think we may be able to help you out. NARA's reference staff generally fulfills research requests like this, so I'd ask you to go through that process, but I've already talked to the staff that work on responging to those, so they are expecting you.
- Here's what I would ask you to do: Please email searchnara.gov with the same request and information you gave me already, and copy Dominic.McDevitt-Parksnara.gov so I will see it. Please include "Wikipedia request" in the subject line, so that the staff will be able to identify it as higher priority. They will then send it to the custodial unit, which should reply within 10 days, and if they are able to locate a usable record, we should be able to get it digitized. This will be our first attempt at this process, so please bear with us, but it should be a good exercise that hopefully will allow us to work out the process for future Wikipedia digitization requests. Dominic·t 17:28, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
- Done, and thanks for your quick response. I suspect this may not be the last time I contact you. In fact, I can already think of another Kentucky politician (my particular area of interest) who held a minor federal office and may have a federally-produced image available. But one request at a time, right? I'll wait and see what you all can turn up on Judge Combs first. I'll be watching your talk page for a while, so no need for {{talkback}}s in the near term, although I appreciate the notice. Welcome to your new position, and good luck getting settled in. Wikimedia LGBT
Hi Dominic, I just wanted to bring Wikimedia LGBT, a proposed user group and thematic organization that promotes the development of content on Wikimedia projects which is of interest to LGBT communities, to your attention. I am sure you are so busy with your current projects, but I hope you might be able to direct people to this group if they are interested in LGBT content in any way. Of course, you are also more than welcome to indicate your interest/support, if you wish. Hopefully we can get some LGBT-related GLAM projects up and running in the near future. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Laurel Sanitarium, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sanitarium (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Your COI policy statement
Hi Dominic, I remember seeing a personal COI policy of yours not so long ago, which I now can't track down. Or did I imagine it? Or is it the bits in your FAQ, which I have seen? Cheers, Johnbod (talk) 18:04, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, my FAQ on my talk page is my personal COI statement. I just organized it in that way so it would be more clear (at least in my mind) with the ability to link to sections. You might also be interested in the guidelines I posted quite a while ago for any of our staff that edit Wikipedia (those these are going to be rewritten as I work on an official agency policy). Old CU logs
Hi Dominic. A bug you filed 2,5 years ago regarding old CU logs (bugzilla:27807) is finally getting fixed, but Reedy asked where he could find the logs. Apparantly he doesn't know where to look. If you still have those logs, could you please send them to him maybe? (or to me, that's fine as well) Thanks in advance! With regards, Trijnsteltalk 20:39, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
- I don't think I have it, since I have changed computers several times since then and haven't been a CheckUser for a long while. After the log was broken for some time, Tim was able to get the missing logs and sent it to me in a text file. So, I think it is (or was) somewhere obtainable. I don't actually know what he did to retrieve the logs, though. Sorry I can't be of more help. Dominic·t 20:49, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

NARA request
Hey Dominic, I've left a new NARA-related request at Wikipedia:GLAM/National_Archives_and_Records_Administration/Requests#USS Michigan (BB-27). Is there any chance of getting the image? :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 05:49, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- This should be doable, especially since we know we already have it. Can you do me a favor and copy your message into Special:EmailUser/NARA_requests? At some point in the future, I wanted to redo the requests page now so that it's an email form that goes directly to the NARA reference staff. This would also have the benefit of giving the NARA staff your email address to reply directly to you with. I had wikipedianara.gov created for this purpose, with the relevant staff given access to the inbox, and that's the email I tied to that account. We should get an answer relatively soon this week. Dominic·t 20:28, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- I've emailed them requesting both 19-N-61-6-25 and 19-N-13-5-73, which I just found. Thanks, Dominic! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 02:26, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
- So, I've been told that I can purchase the print through a private vendor. I'm assuming that's not how you were hoping this new request system would work? ;-) My first reply came from searchnara, who forwarded me to stillpixnara. Also, the email says that 19-N-13573 doesn't exist in NARA's collections, but isn't that should contradicted by this? (third image) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 23:56, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
- No, not what I was expecting, and our Wikipedia email was supposed to be copied on correspondence. Can you forward any email(s) you got that didn't have wikipedianara.gov copied to that address, and I'll see if I can push things forward. Sorry, we're feeling our way, clearly! Dominic·t 01:41, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
- No worries, Dominic. I'm lucky enough to have this opportunity at all. Do you want me to forward it to wikipedianara or your personal email? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 01:46, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

- I just went to the research room and verified both these photos exist, in a folder full of USS Michigan photos. So we'll get it scanned for you one way or another. Dominic·t 22:52, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Dominic. If there's a better photo that the NARA staff would like us to showcase, please have them feel free to scan it instead! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 23:46, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
- Good news! I've uploaded the scans here: File:Photograph of the Battleship USS Michigan - NARA - 19-N-13573.jpg, File:Photograph of the Battleship USS Michigan at the Brooklyn Navy Yard - NARA - 19-N-61-6-25.jpg. An exciting month of wiki events!
Hello there,
I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.
First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.
On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!
All the best,
James Hare

the editor he blocked
That editor had already reverted edits at least three times and admittedly seems to have a hard time keeping her opinions out of her edits. --Slenderdan (talk) 06:40, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree that there was an edit war and a block may have been warranted (or not, see below). But Wikipedia's accepted practice is that administrators are expected to wait for an independent administrator to take actions against editors with whom they are involved in a dispute. The idea is that if it is so clear that the editor needs to be blocked, then an independent editor will surely agree, and that ensures fairness. Violating this practice is actually quite a big deal, and that kind of behavior has in the past led to the administrator losing their privileges. Dominic·t 06:46, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
The edit-warring was about Category:Violence against men in North America, a category that with the removal of this page has only 2 entries and no definition of what articles should be in this category, and I can see BLP issues arising both with the category and its addition to this page. Apparently the perpetrator of this killing has written about his hatred of women, but not of men, which would justify the Category:Violence against women in the United States category (although I'd still like to see a definition for this one also). Adding the violence against men category appears to be stating that the perpetrator was acting because of his hatred of men (as well), and that doesn't seem to be justified - thus a BLP violation. I was about to close this as no violation. And noting that the blocking Admin actually reverted, I think this is a doubly bad block. I've posted to his talk page. - To no avail. Do you think we need a review of this? Dougweller (talk) 07:07, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Probably. I am about to go to bed, and while I just contributed to the article's talk page (and expressed an opinion), I am not planning to be very active in the dispute. I actually think a block is more likely to be warranted than you do, but I also think the block by Crisco showed poor judgment (and I don't think those opinions are in conflict, even if the end result could have been the same). - Thanks, I'm drafting a reply. I wanted to run it by the people who are actually responsible for the Open Government Plan and promoting it (which is not me). Dominic·t 18:32, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
- Poking you on this :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 03:47, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
- Ed: Sorry, I think tomorrow I'll be able to get back to you, finally. I have often handled media interviews myself without lots of extra oversight, but this is a special case. Dominic·t 04:37, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
- No worries, but thanks! I need to write the majority of it up by tomorrow. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 04:41, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
