Hello,
I recently invited you to take a survey about administration on Wikipedia. If you haven’t yet had a chance, there is still time to participate– we’d truly appreciate your feedback. The survey is anonymous and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement.
Take the survey here.
Kind Regards,

Hey Daniel,
my name is Ben Dreyfuss. I’m a journalist. I’m writing an article about Wikipedia and for the lede I’m mentioning this discussion that you and some other editors had earlier this year that led to deleting the pages about me and my sister. The article isn’t me whining about how I don’t have a page but it’s the hook for a different topic relating to Wikipedia editing culture. I was hoping I might be able to ask you some questions about the general process you guys use for this stuff. Nothing “gotcha” or anything. But I don’t know any Wikipedia editors and s that deletion page was just brought to my attention I thought you’d be a good person to reach out to. My email is bendreyfuss at gmail dot com if you’re open to chatting with me!

- Hi Ben, thanks for reaching out. All press enquiries need to go through Wikipedia:Contact us/Press and partnerships first. If they give the green light, I'm happy to assist. Cheers, Daniel (talk) 08:28, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:14, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for standing for arbitrator. I am far away from it all (travel, mourning), not in the mood, so just an informal question you can answer or ignore:
- Liviu Holender chose lieder by five composers whose music was banned by the Nazis—Schreker, Zemlinsky, Mahler, Korngold and Schönberg—for a recital at the Oper Frankfurt.
What does this 2024 DYK tell you about infoboxes for classical composers in 2024? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:27, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- Hi Gerda, I am also travelling (in Central America currently) — I must admit, I have no idea what that hook from 2024 tells me about infoboxes. Not really a specialist subject of mine, or even one where I have any sort of institutional knowledge. Apologies, Daniel (talk) 16:48, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- Well, 11 years ago infoboxes for classical composers where a hot topic. If you look at the talk pages of the 5 composers, do you think they still are? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:35, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
story · music · places |

- November was rich in sadness and happiness for me, expressed in music. Regarding my question, I found one so far who looked into the matter and didn't stay at the surface, Simonm223. There are two composers on the Main page today, Siegfried Thiele and Aaron Copland. I find the response of my friend Jerome Kohl to a question on Copland's article talk promising. What do you think? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:53, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- Today's story comes from a DYK about a concert that fascinated me, and you can listen! For my taste, the hook has too little music - I miss the unusual scoring and a specific dedication - but it comes instead with a name good for viewcount. I'd still like to know what you think about the Copland posts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:55, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- On the Main page today Jean Sibelius on his birthday. Listening to Beethoven's Fifth from the opening of Notre-Dame de Paris. We sang in choirs today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:47, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- Listen today to the (new) Perplexities after Escher. - Congratulations to being elected! Could you look at Samuel Barber and tell me if you miss something in his infobox? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:31, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- Listen today to Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata, on his birthday - it was a hook in the 2020 DYK set when his 250th birthday was remembered. I picked a recording with Antonio Meneses, because he was on my sad list this year, and I was in Brazil (see places), and I love his playing. - I can report happily that the Barber situation was solved. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:18, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Always precious
[edit]Ten years ago, you were found precious. That's what you are, always. - On Beethoven's birthday ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:26, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.
Congratulations on your appointment to Arbcom! Andre🚐 00:22, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- I am also pleased to see this. We haven't had many interactions but I got a definite impression that you are a person with a clear sense of fair play and remembering that every name on your screen represents a human being (hopefully, anyway). We need that on the committee. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 01:59, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks Beebs - I am actually quite devastated that we don't get to work together in '25-'26. I feel like we are quite aligned on a lot of things, especially that sense of 'fairness' and the human element of what we do and who we all are. Please keep doing what you're doing, it is greatly appreciated by a lot of folk (myself included). Thanks, Daniel (talk) 02:02, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on your success in the elections and welcome to the 2025 Arbitration Committee. This is the first part of your induction onto the Arbitration Committee.
Please use the EmailUser function to indicate the email address you'd like to use for ArbCom and functionary business.
Before you can be subscribed to any mailing lists or assigned CheckUser or Oversight permissions, you must sign the Wikimedia Foundation's confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information (L37) and the VRT users confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information (L45). Please confirm that your username is listed on the Access to nonpublic personal data policy/Noticeboard. If isn't, and you haven't signed the agreements, please do this promptly and let me know when you have signed them. Instructions for signing can be found here. Again, you must sign both agreements listed in the instructions. If you have signed but your username is not listed on the noticeboard, please let me know.
Over the coming days, you will receive a small number of emails as part of the induction process. Please carefully read them. If they are registration emails, please follow any instructions in them to finalise registration. You can contact me or any other arbitrator directly if you have difficulty with the induction process.
Thank you for volunteering to serve on the committee. We very much look forward to introducing ourselves to you on the mailing list and to working with you this term.

- @L235:
Over the coming days, you will receive a small number of emails
Has this always said this? That's a joke. He's going to get boatloads of emails in the next few days. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 02:02, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]- Yes it's always said small number. That number refers to the orientation emails which are reasonably small in number (for a new non-CUOS arb you have: AC mailing lists (though this message can be skipped depending on how it's setup), arbwiki, cu email list, os mailing list, and functionaries; perhaps also VRT if they're new there and that's the worst case). But those then lead to an ongoing cavalcade of emails. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 02:08, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- Should be all done and email sent, thanks Kevin. Cheers, Daniel (talk) 06:13, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick note from me—
I was fairly open and transparent in my nomination statement and answers to questions, regarding my planned inactivity between October 2024 and mid-January 2025; it is the reason why I handed back the tools in October. (Speaking of, I will be requesting the tools back in late December; context as to timing).
November & December have largely been spent on vacation in North & Central America (plus transiting home via Europe) or, when at home, dealing with what we call "wedding season". Upcoming in January, I have a further two weddings, a jam-packed international trip and a week-long vacation to the Australian Open in the first three weeks.
Due to this, I will start the 2025 Committee on the "Inactive" list, and will ask the Clerks to move me to Inactive on all matters that are open on 1 January. I will still be active on emails and behind-the-scenes (especially important, I imagine, for the on-boarding processes), but will not have the time to dedicate to being totally informed on case matters during this short period.
I intend to return to full activity on or around Monday 20 January, which is when I return to my home city. Update: I'll be able to be active sooner than 20 January (likely a week or so sooner), so won't go on the inactive list as originally planned. From there, my next vacation plan is a couple of weeks in August, which is fortunately (for activity purposes) / unfortunately (for wanting to sit on a beach drinking cocktails purposes) a long way away.
I am very aware of some of the challenges the '24 Committee faced with activity, and will do my best to a) be active for extended periods and whenever possible; and b) be as transparent as possible with both the Committee and the community regarding periods of inactivity, and err on the side of caution in moving myself to the Inactive list for planned vacations or unplanned periods of inactivity to keep Committee business moving.
Cheers,
Daniel (talk) 19:05, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
