Today's show

[edit]

Seeing that it's starting to get pretty late where you live, are you doing today's show? RedThunder 19:18, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I meant almost night time, it's about 8:21 PM, right? It's only 3:21 where I live. Anyways, I did not see the cancellation, and I will try to do tomorrow's show. RedThunder 19:23, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll go for Tuesday, then. I wont be on Wikipedia on July 3 due to an all day barbecue with my family, and July 4 for Independence Day. I go kind of "paranoid" at that time every year for reasons I cannot say except that it has to do with a dubious scheme involving a fence, a whiffleball bat, 20$, two chairs, and a certain other thing that is confidential (I know that is really confusing, but you can probably guess something...) Retirement?

[edit]

Hrm, sorry to see you go... I'll miss hearing your famous words "probably legitimate content", that always cracked me up whenever you said that! –xenocidic (talk) 19:55, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I just made this userbox in your honour:
There are presently 6,924,566 pages of probably legitimate content on the English Wikipedia.
^ You always used to say that in your radio broadcast whenever you quoted the number of articles. Thanks for the barnstar! Hope to see you back active soon. –xenocidic (talk) 20:06, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sad to see you go. may you one day return to add more probably legitimate content. Shapiros10 contact meMy work 20:17, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help

[edit]

{{helpme}} What rights do I have over WP:RADWP? StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 21:09, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

None whatsoever, as i said before. The idea and content of the page is GFDL, and the casts are PD. Therefore they can b put on itunes etc freely.

BG7even 21:33, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My never-studied-law-never-wanna opinion is that you have the same rights as every other contributor to Wikipedia. Audio files submitted under the GFDL would seem to come under the same heading as text submissions. But, as I said before, IANAL.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 21:36, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nor am I, but I echo the above. Furthermore you make it clear that your sound files are in the public domain. Therefore, what's to stop anyone from using it anywhere? To have rights over a work that you released kinda defeats the object. :) Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 00:53, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No blue goblin it can not be put on itunes because it becomes copyrighted and wholly owned by Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. therefore has to be approved the the board of directors. EE 22:39, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

iTunes

[edit]

Why us it a bad idea to publish RWP to iTunes?Gears Of War 00:07, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because we already run it exclusively here. We can track listeners here. And finally, we have a website in development. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 07:14, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No we don't. We've (you've) released it to the Public Domain, so it's no longer exclusive. Also, the website can have no copyright things on it. It must be GFDL and Public Domain compatible. If you want more info, please contact me. BG7even 10:09, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
*Sigh*, Stewie why are you acting so childish. Why are you eing so freaking protective over this. Let me tell you, the only way to get a real copyright over RW is to come all the way to DC to the Library of Congress and get them to copyright it. Other than that, we will post every episode of RW to iTunes.Gears Of War 15:50, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, calm down. This is the position, and there is no further discussion that needs to take place: All issues of Radio Wikipedia are under GFDL. This is because you released your own work onto Wikipedia. There is no legal possibility of owning your work on Wikipedia. Simple. Your work is our work. My FAs are your FAs. There are no limits to the work released on Wikipedia. Furthermore, I strongly suggest that you reconsider withdrawing this. It is going to be accessed from Wikipedia by Wikipedians. If you want it listened to, keep it here; that's where the central audience is and will be. iTunes is a great optional extra, but if you withdraw your work from Wikipedia, your listening audience will dramatically. Think about it for a while. Really, it's much better that the sound files are in the public domain. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 16:06, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stewie-

Is it okay if I do the Tuesday show? You are scheduled non-stop. RedThunder 15:36, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is it still okay to use the rest of the episodes? RedThunder 15:47, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Stewie, I just thought I'd drop in to let you know one of the things I like most about Radio Wikipedia is that it is done fully within the spirit and philosophy of Wikipedia, particularly the fact that the shows are released into the public domain. I'm not sure why you want to move towards a copyrighted model, but I urge you to reconsider. –xenocidic (talk) 15:47, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to Wikipedia. However, please know that editors do not own articles and should respect the work of their fellow contributors on Wikipedia:Radio Wikipedia. If you create or edit an article, know that others are free to change its content. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. I really don't want to do this, but you have at every step been claiming ownership. I warned you early on, and you either ignored it or accepted it - I don't know.

I know you think i'm poking my nose in, but i'm actually trying to help you out. If you want to bring the rest out with Copyright on, then theres no place for them at Wikipedia. ALl the current ones are Public Domain, and must remain that way. If other editors bring out their own issues, then they can liscence them under what they want: but if they're not GFDL, PD or a CC license, theres no place for them. Thanks BG7even 18:37, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What ever happened to DTTR ? –xenocidic (talk) 18:39, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't come in blaming me of ownership (remember Portal:Sims), and saying about copyright when I said another website. Please read. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 19:19, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I never owned the Portal at all. And actually, the copyright applies to that other website also. BG7even 19:53, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you were. It wasn't just me who said you were owning pages. You probably have never read WP:DTTR. And NO, the copyright does not apply to that website. How does it? StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 19:58, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
DTTR is a essay, not even a guidline or policy. So there. And actually, you MUST ensure your website is both GFDL compatible for the idea, and also that all current issues are clearly marked as PD. BG7even 21:10, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No he doesn't. If he creates a website for himself and uploads new media files there, he can copyright them however he likes. However, he cannot copyright the files which he has already released into the public domain (ie. those uploaded to Wikipedia until the present time), and if he decides to publish new ones under a copyrighted license (as opposed to copyleft, which is what Wikipedia generally uses with its licenses, ie. public domain, GFDL and Creative Commons), then he cannot upload them to Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project. Daniel (talk) 03:24, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Dan. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 16:58, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dial-up users and Radio Wikipedia

[edit]

I was wondering if you could stream Radio Wikipedia at a lower bitrate so dial-up users like me can listen to the show. About 1 in 7 users in my country (USA) still use dial up, and more throughout the world: you are losing some audience. 32 Kbps is max for dial-up because some bandwith is taken by error checking and upload data. At 32 Kbps, MP3 format produces FM stereo quality sound, and with AAC+ near CD quality sound. So you can include many dial-up users without losing sound quality. You could go even lower, since your program is mostly talk. Thanks for considering this, I'd really like to listen to Radio Wikipedia. Diderot's dreams (talk) 23:22, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And also, do you think you could the show in a Quick Time version and one combatle for a standard player, cause I cant even listen to thes show.Gears Of War 23:27, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But you can comment about iTunes etc. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 07:24, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes indeed I can. Is there a problem? I can only listen when I go to another persons house. So please dude, dont start nothing. I was just asking a question.Gears Of War 16:06, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Stewie, don't get pushy about someone doing something with a program you started. It's in the public domain, you have no control over it, and WP:OWN doesn't apply.
I've talked to gears via e-mail, and he says he can only play iTunes and Quicktime on his computer. Shapiros10 contact meMy work 16:08, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I only have Quick Time but it doesnt work. I only asked if you could make one in Quick Time and one for a standard player.(My sig is still undecided)Gears Of War 16:12, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Before making comments, I release mine as a *.ogg file, and I won't change this. I can do an *.mp3 if requested but nothing else. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 16:59, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay then, that will work. Can you make it so that is easy for someone to upload it onto their iPods?Gears Of War 23:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Personal iPods, I am in favour for. I don't own an iPod so I can't help you. Sorry. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 10:37, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The .ogg format works for me, since I am streaming through a browser. It's just I can't stream at that speed. I was just citing examples of formats whose sound qualities at low speeds I know. And after trying the information link, I see I can download your program and listen that way, but it requires waiting a lot. Can you record at a lower speed so I dial-up users can stream? Diderot's dreams (talk) 12:45, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletions

[edit]

{{helpme}} Why exactly are deletions for? If we can save space by deletion, admins can undelete. And surely even non-notable subjects could still benifit the encyclopedia. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 09:32, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't understand the helpme - what exactly are you asking? BG7even 10:05, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why are there deletions. And you don't need to tl the template, just if you can't understand. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 10:19, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't really something that volunteers monitoring the {{helpme}} can really answer as everyone's opinion will differ depending on whether they're a deletionist or an inclusionist. I will, however, keep the help tag intact ——RyanLupin(talk) 10:27, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have taken off the help request: this is a philosophical question and is not proper for a help request. Metros (talk) 11:36, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a philosophical question, its a question about Wikipedia. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 11:55, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If there were no deletions at all, then anyone could use Wikipedia as their own personal webhost, and we would have no recourse. We are not in the business of letting people keep their journals, blogs, and personal photo albums here. Surely you can see that deletion is necessary in some cases. Now deciding what things get deleted and what don't is a question for the ages. HiDrNick! 12:01, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:HAU, Status, and you!

[edit]

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 23:10, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
