Disambiguation link notification for April 29
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of Australian animals extinct in the Holocene, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Anura. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hello Columbianmammoth. I saw your edit to List of birds of New Zealand and thought that was an interesting idea. I have most of the "List of birds of ...", "List of mammals of ...", etc. lists on my watchlist, and there is sometimes discussion on those pages of what species should be included. Usually the consensus has been species which became extinct after 1500 (that's what the IUCN uses), but that's not very satisfactory. Being part of the Holocene extinction might be better across the board. Do you have any thoughts? I may bring this up on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biology at some point. I've been playing with ideas for a post there at User:SchreiberBike/sandbox#Inclusion criteria for List of organisms of Place and would welcome your input. Thank you. SchreiberBike | ⌨ 16:37, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
- I updated the problematic statement to, "a species that became extinct after human arrival in New Zealand." I hope this addresses your concerns.
- I agree, saying "Holocene" is too broad. For example, there is nothing on this list that disappeared c. 8000 BCE. The previous statement (before my edit) didn't specify I time window.
- Likewise, I agree that 1500 CE is unsatisfactory. This arbitrary date works for most of the world, but it breaks down in island environments that were significantly impacted by human settlers in the past 500 to 2000 years. It would seem arbitrary to exclude moa from the List of birds of New Zealand just because they vanished 50 to 100 years before the 1500 CE cutoff date. (Personally, I wish that the IUCN Red List would rectify this error. Some fascinating species from New Zealand, Hawaii, and Madagascar deserve more attention.) [edit] Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from one or more pages into another page. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution
. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. CMD (talk) 07:13, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, I've actually been merging multiple pages recently. I've been working on Lists of extinct species by region, and I feel like some regions are not biogeographically distinct enough to warrant separate articles. For example, I recently merged Catalonia, the Isle of Man, and the British Isles into List of European animals extinct in the Holocene.
- Please let me know what rules apply in the case of page merges. Columbianmammoth (talk) 17:07, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- The guidelines for page merges are essentially similar. Please attribute any merges to the original pages through an edit summary, and then through {{merged}}. This ensures that the existing page histories are preserved. Best, CMD (talk) 01:31, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you. Hopefully you are satisfied by my recent comments on Talk:List of Asian animals extinct in the Holocene#Page Merges and Talk:List of European species extinct in the Holocene#Page Merges, including using {{merged}}. Going forward after your initial comment, I also tried to any merges to the original pages through an edit summary. Columbianmammoth (talk) 23:34, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for being so thorough! I've just shifted the templates to the headers, so they don't disappear into archives. Best, CMD (talk) 03:28, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

List of Extinct Plants of the British Isles
[edit]Hello, I am pretty angry this morning to find that an article I created several years ago 'List of Extinct Plants of the British Isles appears to have been deleted without notifying me. When I click on my link to the article it now redirects to 'List of European Species Extinct in the Holocene'. The article 'List of Extinct Plants of the British Isles' listed about 30 species of plants, with details of each one, whereas 'List of European Species Extinct in the Holocene' only lists 2 species of plants. None of the information from my article has been incorporated into the article 'List of European Species Extinct in the Holocene, so it's an entirely inadequate solution to a problem that didn't exist. Why has all the content I slaved over just disappeared??? Regularuk (talk) 08:06, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comment. I responded on Talk:List of European species extinct in the Holocene, since I believe that is a more appropriate forum for this discussion. Columbianmammoth (talk) 16:33, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
