The 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans was an endurance sports car race held at the Circuit de la Sarthe near Le Mans, France on 14 and 15 June 2025. It was the second round of the 2025–26 FIA World Endurance Championship.[1]
Background
[edit]Preview
[edit]The FIA WEC announced their calendar for the re-instated super season during the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend, with the 24 Hours of Le Mans being the second of nine rounds.[1] It was the 93rd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the thirteenth consecutive year the race was part of the FIA WEC. The 24 Hours of Le Mans was the second of nine scheduled sports car endurance races by the FIA.[1] The race took place at the 13.626 km (8.467 mi) Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France on 14 and 15 June 2025.[1]
Success ballast
[edit]Since this was the second race of the season, success ballast was not used. All cars were held at their base weight of 1065 kilograms. Once again, lap time predictions were published by the FIA and ACO: Hypercar lap times will be set around 3 minutes, 20 seconds, and LMGT3 lap times are set around 3 minutes, 45 seconds.[2] LMP2 lap times have been set at 3 minutes and 30 seconds.[2]
Entry list
[edit]The entry list was published on 1 May 2025, and consisted of 62 entries: 22 in Hypercar, 22 in LMP2, and 18 in LMGT3. In Hypercar, Álex Palou made his WEC debut with Cadillac Racing in the No. 2 car, after missing out on the opening race of the season. Furthermore, Nicki Thiim was replaced in the No. 23 Heart of Racing Team entry by Ryan Briscoe.[3] All other entries are the same as on the full-season entry list.[4]
On 13 June, a day before the start of the race, the No. 67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing entry announced their withdrawal from the event after the heavy crash of Frédéric Vervisch during qualifying the day before.[5] Their spot on the grid was not filled up, but instead was left vacated.[6]

Practice
[edit]Six practice sessions were held: two on Tuesday, two on Wednesday, and two on Friday. The practice sessions on Wednesday evening and Friday evening were mandatory for all drivers to practice night-time racing. All sessions lasted 90 minutes.[10]
Practice 1
[edit]The first practice session took place at 11:00 CEST on Tuesday and ended with Matthieu Vaxivière being fastest in the No. 35 Alpine Endurance Team Alpine, with a lap time of 3:23.682. In second was Daniel Juncadella in the No. 77 Acura TF Sport Acura, 0.168s behind. Third-fastest was Yifei Ye in the No. 51 Ferrari AF Corse Ferrari, 0.361s behind Vaxivière.[11] In LMP2, Reshad de Gerus was fastest in the No. 28 IDEC Sport Oreca, lapping the circuit in 3:33.609. He was 0.051s quicker than Lorenzo Fluxá in the No. 37 Cool Racing Oreca. Michael Dinan in the No. 41 Staysail Motorsport Oreca finished third.[11] Malthe Jakobsen led LMGT3 in the No. 81 TF Sport – AO Corvette with a time of 3:48.612, 0.014s quicker than the No. 54 Vista AF Corse Ferrari of Davide Rigon. The No. 59 United Autosports McLaren of Nicolas Costa was third-fastest.[12]

Practice 2
[edit]The second practice session took place at 16:00 CEST on Tuesday. Mike Rockenfeller was quickest in the No. 66 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford, lapping the track in 3:24.148. 0.098s behind was Robin Frijns in the No. 25 BMW M Team WRT BMW, with Ye in the No. 51 Ferrari in third.[15] Dinan was quickest in LMP2 in the No. 41 Oreca with a lap of 3:33.570, which was 0.008s quicker than Albert Costa in the No. 24 Nielsen Racing Oreca. 0.053s behind was De Gerus in the No. 28 Oreca.[15] Costa once again showed his speed, lapping the circuit in a 3:49.285 in his No. 59 McLaren after finishing third in the first practice session. He was 0.256s quicker than Kimi Räikkönen in the No. 55 Ferrari in second, with Jakobsen in the No. 81 Corvette 0.264s behind.[16]

Practice 3
[edit]The third practice session took place at 13:00 CEST on Wednesday. Felipe Nasr's No. 27 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin ended on top with a lap of 3:23.492. Robert Kubica was second-fastest in the No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari, 0.371s behind. Kévin Estre finished third in the No. 5 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche.[19] Dinan was once against quickest in LMP2 in the No. 41 Oreca, with a lap of 3:33.901. Juan Pablo Montoya finished 0.032s behind in the No. 811 DragonSpeed USA Oreca. Costa was third-fastest in the No. 24 Oreca, 0.243s behind.[19] Kei Cozzolino was quickest in the No. 88 Proton Competition Ford, with a lap of 3:48.569. Franck Perera lapped 0.051s slower in the No. 60 Iron Lynx Lamborghini, with Costa in the No. 59 McLaren in third.[20] The session saw one stoppage: the No. 89 Proton Competition Ford crashed on the Mulsanne straight, stopping the session for over fifteen minutes.[21]

Practice 4
[edit]The fourth practice session took place at 22:00 CEST on Wednesday. Jean-Éric Vergne lapped the circuit fastest in his No. 93 Peugeot TotalEnergies Peugeot, with a lap of 3:23.522. He was 0.124s quicker than André Negrão in the No. 36 Alpine Endurance Team Alpine, with the sister Peugeot No. 94 of Stoffel Vandoorne finishing third.[24] Costa once again showed his pace in the No. 24 Oreca, lapping the LMP2 class quickest with a 3:33.632. He was 0.362s clear of Jakub Śmiechowski in the No. 34 Inter Europol Competition Oreca, with Fluxá in the No. 37 Oreca third.[24] The No. 60 Lamborghini of Perera was quickest in LMGT3 with a lap of 3:48.778. Valentino Rossi was second in the No. 46 Team WRT BMW, 0.201s behind. Daniel Mancinelli in the No. 3 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin was third-quickest.[25]

Practice 5
[edit]The fifth practice session took place at 09:00 CEST on Friday. Earl Bamber was quickest in the No. 2 Cadillac Racing Cadillac, lapping with a time of 3:23.530. He was 0.142s quicker than Matt Campbell in the No. 99 Proton Competition Porsche. Estre finished third in the No. 5 Porsche.[28] LMP2 was led by Colin Braun in the No. 45 CrowdStrike Racing by APR Oreca, with a time of 3:33.610. This was 0.117s quicker than Ikkou Daisaki's lap in the No. 33 DKR Engineering Oreca. Ruben de Goede was third-quickest in the No. 64 Panis Racing Oreca.[28] LMGT3 was led by Rossi in the No. 46 BMW, with a 3:49.223. This put him 0.209s clear of Alex Malykhin in the No. 92 Manthey Racing Porsche, whilst Costa once more showed his pace in the No. 59 McLaren, finishing third.[29]

Practice 6
[edit]The sixth and final practice session took place at 21:30 CEST on Friday. Campbell ended up first in the No. 99 Porsche, lapping the circuit in 3 minutes and 23.786 seconds. He ended up 0.125s quicker than Augusto Farfus in the No. 38 Hertz Team Jota Porsche, with Ye in the No. 51 Ferrari third.[32] Staysail Motorsport once again showed pace: the No. 41 Oreca in the hands of Dinan was quickest with a lap of 3:33.760, 0.205s clear of Braun in the No. 45 Oreca. Pomeroy Bourgouin was third-quickest in the No. 65 Panis Racing Oreca.[32] LMGT3 was led by Costa in the No. 59 McLaren with a lap of 3:48.597. He was 0.247s quicker than second-placed Kamui Kobayashi in the No. 82 TF Sport – AO Corvette. Räikkönen was third-quickest in the No. 55 Ferrari.[33]

Qualifying
[edit]Qualifying started at 14:00 CEST on Thursday. The first session was for LMGT3 cars, the second session was for LMP2 cars, and the third session was for Hypercars. The top ten fastest qualifiers in each round advanced to the Hyperpole round. The first Hyperpole session was for LMGT3 cars. Sarah Bovy took pole in the No. 85 Iron Dames Lamborghini with a time of 3:44.213. Second-fastest was Ian James in the No. 3 Aston Martin, 0.755s slower. Satoshi Hoshino finished third in the No. 777 D'station Racing Aston Martin.[36] The second Hyperpole session was for LMP2 cars, which saw the No. 24 Oreca of Costa take pole with a lap of 3:29.323. 0.160s behind was the No. 43 Inter Europol Competition Oreca of Clément Novalak, with the No. 37 Oreca of Fluxá in third.[37] The No. 7 Toyota Gazoo Racing Toyota claimed pole in Hypercar, with a lap time of 3:17.737 set by Nyck de Vries. Juncadella in the No. 77 Acura was 0.163s slower than De Vries, with the sister No. 8 Toyota third-fastest overall.[38]

Race
[edit]Start and early hours
[edit]At 16:00 CEST on Saturday, under clear skies, the race kicked off with a fleet of 61 cars, comprising 21 Hypercars, 22 LMP2s, and 18 LMGT3s. Initially, the No. 2 Cadillac surged ahead of the No. 7 Toyota, trailed by the No. 36 Alpine. Meanwhile, the No. 24 Oreca of Nielsen Racing maintained its pole position, with the No. 34 Oreca of Śmiechowski and the No. 9 Proton Competition Oreca close behind. Among LMGT3s, the No. 777 Aston Martin led, followed by the No. 95 United Autosports McLaren and the No. 46 BMW. Yet, within the first twenty minutes, the landscape shifted dramatically: the No. 93 Peugeot of Vergne seized the lead, trailed by the No. 51 and No. 83 Ferraris, relegating the No. 7 Toyota to 11th place. Moreover, Manthey Racing claimed a swift 1-2 with the No. 91 leading the No. 92.[41][42] However, misfortune struck the No. 2 Cadillac post its initial pit stop, forcing it into retirement due to a loose wheel nut. Subsequently, the No. 811 Oreca of Montoya took the LMP2 lead after the first round of pit stops, while the No. 91 Porsche maintained its LMGT3 lead ahead of the No. 46 BMW.[41]
Ninety minutes into the race, the No. 23 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin, piloted by Ryan Briscoe, wrested the lead from Nico Müller's No. 93 Peugeot. In LMGT3, the No. 78 Akkodis ASP Team Lexus of Jules Gounon took charge after intense battles in LMGT3.[43] The No. 23 Aston Martin, No. 93 Peugeot, No. 7 Toyota, and No. 77 Acura were all vying closely for the overall lead. As the race approached the two-hour mark, DragonSpeed maintained its lead in LMP2, while the No. 31 Team WRT BMW surged ahead in LMGT3. Additionally, the No. 77 Acura of Delétraz emerged as the new leader in Hypercar after a round of pit stops.[43][44][45]
With over twenty hours remaining, a thrilling battle unfolded between Juncadella in the Acura and De Vries in the Toyota for the overall lead, closely pursued by the No. 93 Peugeot. However, a crash from De Vries at Tetre Rouge allowed Juncadella to secure a significant lead.[46][47][48] Meanwhile, BMW ascended to the top two spots in LMGT3, with Porsche trailing in third and fourth. Duqueine subsequently overtook DragonSpeed for the lead in LMP2, while the No. 5 Porsche moved up to fifth overall.[49][50][51]
Night to morning
[edit]As night descended, the Acura widened its lead to 30 seconds ahead of the two Aston Martins, while Peugeot and Porsche secured spots in the top five. DragonSpeed found itself overtaken by the No. 65 Panis Racing Oreca of Bourgouin, and the No. 55 Ferrari climbed to fourth in LMGT3. A sudden full-course yellow flagged the race when the leading Acura made contact with the No. 51 Ferrari, necessitating the removal of debris from the track and a nose change for the Ferrari at the subsequent pit stop.[52][53] Eastwood's skillful driving stretched Acura's lead to nearly a minute, with several Hypercars falling a lap behind. Vergne maneuvered the No. 93 Peugeot to second overall. Panis Racing's No. 65 Oreca slipped from second to fifth in class, while Duqueine led DragonSpeed. BMW continued to dominate LMGT3, maintaining their 1-2 position.[54]
As midnight approached, Vergne closed the gap to Delétraz by almost thirty seconds in just half an hour. At midnight, Déletraz led Vergne by 33.1 seconds, with Alex Riberas trailing by 59.8 seconds. Montoya and DragonSpeed reclaimed the lead in LMP2, while Sean Gelael led in LMGT3.[55] BMW held on to the top stops in LMGT3, with Porsche securing third.[56] With fifteen hours remaining, the No. 37 Cool Racing Oreca encountered brake issues, marking the third retirement of the race.[57] Mick Schumacher set the fastest lap, though his car lagged in 17th place. Acura's strategic fuel-saving tactic became evident, allowing them to delay pit stops.[58] The Peugeot trailed by a minute, with Aston Martin in pursuit. Cool Racing surged to the LMP2 lead, and BMW continued its dominance in LMGT3.[59] Manthey Racing still held third.[60]
As dawn broke, DragonSpeed slipped to sixth in LMP2 after a spin, while the No. 777 D'station Racing Aston Martin retired following a collision.[61] Acura maintained its lead, while the Aston Martins fell behind. BMW retained its grip on LMGT3.[62][63] With two-thirds of the race completed, the gap between the leaders narrowed. LMP2 saw a new leader in the No. 47 Cool Oreca, while only five cars remained on the lead lap.[64][65][66] Proton Competition's No. 89 Ford retired due to gearbox issues.[67] As the race progressed, Jensen began to close the gap on Delétraz, with the Heart of Racing Aston Martins trading places. LMP2 was still led by the No. 47 Oreca, and BMW maintained control in LMGT3.[68][69][70]
Excitement started to grow in the grandstands, as Nico Müller put in a sensational stint to bring the gap for the lead back down under one minute before bringing the car back into the pit lane. In LMP2, meanwhile, the No. 14 AO by TF Oreca, driven by Jack Aitken, crashed in the Porsche curves and was forced to retire from the race.[71][72] With five hours to go, the gap between the two leaders was 55.6 seconds.[73]
Afternoon to finish
[edit]As time dwindled for Peugeot, Juncadella widened the gap once again, pulling away from Vergne by over a minute. Cool Racing expanded their lead in LMP2 by over a minute ahead of Staysail. BMW and Porsche maintained their dominance in LMGT3, securing the top four positions throughout the race.[74] Panis Racing regained third in LMP2 after intense battles, while AF Corse's Ferrari climbed up to sixth overall, leading the Privateer Cup.[62]
With two hours remaining, the lead gap grew to 81.7 seconds, while Peugeot solidified their second place. The battle for third intensified, with the No. 25 BMW closing in on the No. 27 Aston Martin. [75] With 22 hours and 40 minutes completed, the No. 9 Proton Competition Oreca retired due to suspension issues, followed by the No. 95 United Autosports McLaren due to an oil leak, and the No. 99 Porsche with a driveshaft problem.[76][62] The race approached a new distance record, surpassing 397 laps set in 2011.[77]
After 404 laps, a new distance record, Charlie Eastwood crossed the line in the No. 77 Acura TF Sport enry to claim Acura's maiden Le Mans victory; it was also Delétraz's, Eastwood's, Juncadella's, and TF Sport's first Le Mans victory. Due to saving a pit stop over their competitors, they finished 2 minutes, 30.200 seconds ahead of the No. 93 Peugeot, with the No. 25 BMW finishing third overall, 3 minutes, 4.563 seconds behind. Aston Martin's No. 27 Valkyrie fell back to fourth after a quick splash-and-dash coming to the final lap.[78] Cool Racing won the LMP2 class with Matt Bell, Naveen Rao, and Frederik Vesti; only the No. 64 Panis Racing entry finished on the same lap. Staysail Motorsport's No. 41 Oreca finished one lap behind.[79] BMW claimed their maiden LMGT3 victory; they finished 1-2, which they had been predominantly holding for the last 20 hours of the race, the crew of Sean Gelael, Darren Leung, and Marco Wittmann winning the race. Porsche came through to finish third and fourth, one lap behind the BMW's.[80] 52 of the 61 starting vehicles finished the race.[81]
Post-race
[edit]After the race, Peugeot and BMW voiced their concerns over the fact that the Le Mans race was placed this early in the season, so that the success ballast was not yet in effect. Jean-Marc Finot, Stellantis Motorsport director, said the following: "I think that it is plain wrong to not include success ballast for the 24 hours. It is the most prestigious race of the year, everyone wants to win, so why do they not level the field? It would be more exciting for the spectators as well."[82]
Since the Le Mans race gives double points, the changed changed quite significantly. Delétraz, Eastwood, and Juncadella took the top spot in the Drivers' Hypercar World Championship with 59 points, five ahead of Kubica, Rovera, and Shwartzman, who dropped to second place. After finishing second in Le Mans, Jensen, Müller, and Vergne were also five points behind the leaders. Al Harthy, Martin, and Rossi took the lead in the Drivers' LMGT3 Trophy with 51 points each, one ahead of team mates Gelael, Leung, and Wittmann. Bachler, Malykhin, and Sturm were two further points behind, in third place.[83]
The Manufacturers' Hypercar World Championship was led by Acura after their victory, with 62 points. Peugeot was three points behind after their second conescutive podium finish. Toyota dropped from first to third, twenty-three points behind Acura. AF Corse took their second victory in the Hypercar World Cup, extending their points total to 88, twenty-five ahead of Red Bull Team Jota. Hertz Team Jota is a further ten points behind.[83]
